Here's what the Steam Store looks like on Steam Deck

Valve's Steam Deck handheld system releases later this year - at least, for those lucky enough to have pre-ordered very early - but one of the bigger question marks is how Steam itself will look and run on the console. Now we finally have an idea of how the Steam Store will look in the new "tablet mode" coming to Steam Deck.

We've long known that Steam's Big Picture mode was getting replaced with whatever version of Steam would be running with the Steam Deck - even for those that don't own the handheld - but Valve hasn't really offered a good idea of how it's actually going to look, or how users will interact with the Steam Store on the new UI.

Thanks to SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik we now have our first preview of how the store will look on the Steam Deck's new UI - which Valve is apparently also calling "tablet mode". The screenshots can be seen in Djundik's tweet below, showing the Steam Deck's version of pages for Counter-Strike, GTFO, the search page, and account details.

Crucible was Amazon Game Studios' big online hope before New World, but it ended up being cancelled less than six months after it was released. According to a developer behind the free-to-play third-person shooter, however, it should have been canned long before release.

Amazon's F2P hero shooter Crucible was released in May 2020 to a less than impressive start, with our own review commenting on the removal of most of the game modes prior to release and how it's more of a MOBA than a hero shooter - which wasn't conveyed very well. Regardless, it was eventually pulled back to closed beta and finally shut down in November 2020.

Amazon said that it shut the game down so quickly because it "didn't see a healthy, sustainable future ahead of Crucible", but one developer on the project has claimed that its problems ran deeper than that - and that "Crucible should have been cancelled rather than rebuilt", as it was during its extended development time.

You can date Cthulhu in love-craft sim Sucker For Love: First Date

Have you ever wanted to date an Eldritch horror from the dawn of time? Jokes about ex-partners aside, you'll soon be able to in Sucker For Love: First Date, a dating sim that promises to "put the 'love' back into 'Lovecraftian horror'" - with more than a hint of the deceptively cute Doki Doki Literature Club about it.

Published by horror studio DreadXP, which originally released a basic version of Sucker For Love in its horror anthology Dread X Collection 2 which was made in just ten days - Sucker For Love: First Date offers players a chance to date a Cthulhu-like girl, a yellow-loving royal, and the enrapturing Nyanlathotep.

There is certainly a lot about Sucker For Love that seems off or creepy, but don't worry, DreadXP promises that players can "let your guard down" and that there are "no horror elements or danger whatsoever. This is a dating game!" We're sure a publisher known for exclusively creating twisted horror games wouldn't lie about something like that, so it must be totally fine.

The best horror games on PC

What are the best horror games on PC? Horror games tend to turn traditional action concepts on their heads and force you to run and hide from your enemies. Scary games leave you feeling vulnerable rather than empowered, and more than most, they are the gaming experiences that haunt you long after you play.

Of course, there is a lot more to horror games than jump scares and gore, too. So while we have included a few obvious picks like Outlast and Amnesia, you can also expect to find games that use different tactics to raise your heartbeat and get your palms sweating. Don't worry about this list getting out of date, either: we hop back into our lists regularly to add new scary games.

Remember, as Roosevelt once said, "we have nothing to fear but that bit in FEAR where you're going up a ladder and Alma suddenly pops out and you are all like argh!" Here are the best horror games on PC you can play right now... if you dare.

New World has lost over 500,000 players in a month

Amazon Game Studios' MMO New World has lost more than half of its player base since its launch. While initially, players counts for the game had been extremely promising - launching to 650,000 concurrent players before raising significantly to over 900,000 at the beginning of October - over 500,000 players have left New World in less than a month.

New World has certainly had a rough time since its stellar launch on September 28. Various major bugs and exploits have turned up, and even its best feature - the sheer number of players - proved troublesome, as servers got overloaded, waiting times skyrocketed, and the ability to transfer between servers got progressively more and more delayed.

According to SteamCharts (via Forbes), it would seem that the majority of players have either had enough of these issues or are waiting for New World to become more stable - or get more features - and have stopped playing for the time being.

Resident Evil 6 is much better than you remember

I've been a fan of the Resident Evil series since the original and I've played, completed, and enjoyed every mainline entry, with one major exception: Resident Evil 6.

Released nearly a decade ago to mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, RE6 represented a total departure from the series' survival horror roots. Its multiple campaigns are schlocky and uneven, the co-op integration leaves solo play feeling like an afterthought, and a complete abandonment of classic features like a merchant or inventory management all combined to sour the experience for long-time fans. The backlash seemed so complete at the time that I chose to avoid it for years. This Halloween, I've decided to finally give it a shot.

The sparse main menu, which is reminiscent of an early '00s multiplayer game, doesn't instil much confidence. Then there's a small grumble when I realise that the only way to pause the game is to play the whole thing in offline mode, and thus, alone. Of course I still have an AI partner to help me out, but as is the case in Resident Evil 5, they're basically just a medic, since every time you go down they're instantly on hand to revive you.

Genshin Impact Thoma and Hu Tao banner release time – out this week

Developer Mihoyo has revealed that the Genshin Impact Hu Tao banner event 'Moment of Bloom' will return next week, giving players another chance to earn a 5-star version of the spooky character on Tuesday, November 2 - but most importantly, new four-star character Thoma will be available for the first time too.

The Genshin Impact Thoma and Hu Tao banner release time is 18:00 server time, which works out as to 3 PM PST / 6 PM EST North American time, and 5 PM BST for UK and European players. The event starts on November 2 and finishes on October 23 at 14:59 server time / 11:59 AM PST / 14:59 EST / 13:59 BST – the usual three weeks to get the characters.

Ghost-talking Pyro character Hu Tao's banner first dropped in March this year and quickly proved very popular, especially due to the character having some of the best single-target damage in Genshin Impact - ensuring that Hu Tao would place highly on our tier list. Here's our guide to help you put together a truly devastating build for Hu Tao.

How to use a VPN for gaming

A virtual private network (VPN) can elevate your gaming PC as a does-it-all device for both gaming and streaming, and is both easy to set up and to use. Computers are uniquely positioned as the easiest means of enjoying the gaming benefits of a VPN, as you can be up and running in just a couple of clicks, but consoles and smart TVs require more technical know-how to route through one.

You've probably heard of how VPNs allow you to access content that's exclusive to other countries, from the best Netflix TV series in each region to otherwise restricted streaming services like Hulu and HBO Max. This is still very much the case, but a VPN can also enhance your gaming experience, particularly if you play peer-to-peer (P2P) online games like GTA Online.

Before you search for the best VPN for gaming, it's worth noting that not all VPNs are created equally. The best free VPNs can come with notable limitations, such as bandwidth caps or missing features. However, there are numerous premium options available, but you'll need to conduct your own research to figure out which VPN is right for you. Thankfully, the tips and tricks described below will work with whatever VPN you use, be they of the Nordic or ursine variety.

20211030155530 1In the second campaign of Age of Empires IV, you take control of the French army during the Hundred Years War. Although confronted with inferior English numbers, the mighty French army is decimated by the enemy's fearsome English Longbow. In the second mission of the campaign, they are pushed all the way back to Paris and must mount a hasty defense behind its mighty stone walls. This guide will explain how to best make your way past the Siege of Paris in Age of Empires IV. It's a tough fight, but rest assured you'll come out on the other side.   This is purely a defensive mission. There is no need to plan a counterattack. All you have to do is survive until the enemy has depleted itself over the course of 10 waves. If the city is destroyed, you fail the mission. Specifically, the Red Palace and Guild Hall at the back of your base must not fall or you will trigger the fail state.      Super Robot Wars Worth It 1When I saw that Super Robot Wars 30 was out on Steam, I had to blink twice before it registered. Somehow, the game releasing totally got by me. Make no mistake, though, its release is a huge deal. No mainline game in the series has ever come out in the West before. A few of the Super Robot Taisen games made it over, but those were 100% original characters and mecha, which means they were missing a notable amount of the appeal the main series is known for. A game in the series may be available for Westerners to easily purchase for the first time, but the question stands: is Super Robot Wars 30 worth it? The Super Robot Wars series is famous for taking characters and mechs from a huge number of beloved mecha anime and mixing them together in a turn-based strategy RPG. When Super Robot Wars 30 starts, you can choose from male and female protagonists, give them names and nicknames, and pick from one of two starting scenarios. Which starting scenario you pick dictates which franchises yo...

DuskTomorrow is Halloween and, sure, a lot of us are going to be taking our children on a candy tour. But it's also a great night for video games. Dusk This is obviously an older title, but Dusk recently got released on the Switch, so millions of players will be jumping into the game for the first time. Additionally, the game just received a big update that added console features, such as a weapon wheel and world map, to the PC version. Therefore, this is a great Halloween for anyone who's been sleeping on the game to take a crack at it. To put it simply, Dusk is the Blood sequel that we all wanted to begin with. It's a fast, violent game where you fight cultists and unspeakable monsters while blazing through intricately designed levels packed with secrets. Don't let the highly stylized art fool you. The first-person shooter Forgive Me Father is unsettling because of its flat comic-book graphics, not in spite of them. At first, I was charmed by how the art style made the game feel like a distant cousin to Paper Mario. By the end of the second level, I was a paranoid mess.

The best free VPN services in 2021

Using the best VPN comes with many perks, like privacy, extra security against attacks, and access to sites from other regions. However, if you use the Xbox Game Pass, or pay for streaming services like Netflix and Disney Plus, chances are you'd rather not add another monthly subscription to your list. Thankfully, there are a wealth of free VPNs available from a wide range of providers, albeit with functionality sacrifices and limitations.

Of course, before diving into the wonderful world of free VPNs, it's important to learn how each works before trusting it with your data. Naturally, even if a VPN is free, it still costs its provider money to run, so it's important to identify any potential hidden costs or caveats associated with seemingly free services. This includes agreeing to your gaming PC becoming an exit node for other users, intrusive browser ads, and the risk of your data being logged and sold to third parties.

That said, there are still free VPNs out there that can provide a great service without paying a monthly fee. While you'll still need to pay to experience the best VPN subscription and all its intrinsic benefits, you should still be able to find a good balance between usability and security when using a free version of a VPN.

Multiversus leaks add Game of Thrones and LeBron James to Warner's Smash Bros

Warner Bros' rumoured Smash Bros-style platform fighting game, supposedly codenamed Multiversus, has had a flood of leaks this week since the initial post on Monday. Stages, controls, early screenshots, and design documents have all since been leaked - as well as much of the Multiversus fighter roster.

Previously, it was rumoured that Warner Bros was working on a licenced platform-fighting game similar to Super Smash Bros or Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. The rumoured was backed up by GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb, who only denied that it was being made by NetherRealm - which Grubb says is focused on Mortal Kombat 12.

Since then a relative flood of info has come out about the project, which if true points to a roster of characters from diverse sources such as DC Comics, Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Steven Universe, and Rick and Morty. A number of design documents have also supposedly made their way online thanks to Smash Bros content creator PapaGenos (via ResetEra).

Resident Evil Village is getting free DLC, apparently

Resident Evil Village is one of the best games of 2021 and one of the scariest games on PC, which makes it all the more baffling that Capcom didn't have the confidence in it to provide fans with DLC. In a new report, Capcom says that not only will there be Resident Evil 8 DLC, but it'll be free too.

While it is obvious that Capcom - for whatever reason - didn't think Resident Evil Village needed any DLC, we've long known that the publisher had a change of heart and confirmed at E3 in June that the latest Resident Evil will indeed get DLC. It didn't provide any further detail about this at the time, other than that development had "just started" on it - so would probably be a while.

Tucked into this week's Capcom Integrated Report (as spotted by The Loadout), however, is a small note about Resident Evil Village - that says that at least some of the upcoming DLC actually will be free.

Dune comes to No Man's Sky in the Halloween update

The big No Man's Sky Halloween update has brought a touch of Dune to Hello Games' epic space sim, with this week's Expedition 4: Emergence adding giant sandworms to the mix - as well as the ability to ride them.

One thing is certain: there aren't enough Dune games. Despite being the template for the entire RTS genre and a huge influence on many other gaming genres too, the last notable game based on Frank Herbert's space opera was Emperor: Battle For Dune over twenty years ago. Funcom, the creator of Conan Exiles, is currently working on a Dune survival MMO to tie in with the movies - but that's still a ways away.

Now developer Hello Games has decided to readdress the balance and has brought Dune to its own space epic in the Halloween "Emergence" update. The latest Expedition adds a proper narrative - for the first time - set on the barren world of Wasan, where the player has to investigate the colossal Titan Worms and the involvement of the worm-worshipping native cult.

Slender Man is hiding in Phasmophobia

The big Halloween update for Phasmophobia seems to have been hiding a creepy stowaway, as fans have discovered that none other than the infamous Slender Man is hiding in the woods around Maple Lodge Campsite - which was added earlier this week.

Phasmophobia developer Kinetic Games is well-known for creepy little teases - the team particularly loves to throw out hints about new ghosts way before releasing them, as the run-up to this week's big Halloween Nightmare update proved. This released on Monday and brought with it four new ghosts, the new Nightmare difficulty, various major tweaks, and the new Maple Lodge Campsite map.

The campsite map is different from previous maps in that it's set in the woods, and players digging into the map have discovered all manner of Easter eggs - including the mask of Jason Voorhees and a dead body under the cabin, which presumably belongs to one of the new ghosts. The creepiest secret, however, is Slender Man hiding in the woods.

New World server transfer guide – how to change servers

Wondering how the New World server transfer system works? When Amazon's MMO first launched, servers were quickly overwhelmed with players eager to start adventuring on the island of Aeturnum. This led to immense queue times in several regions, and Amazon added hundreds of new servers to allow players to get started as soon as possible.

To encourage players to begin their quest on one of these newer servers, Amazon Game Studios decided to grant each player a free server transfer token when the server transfer service becomes available. This token allows players to join their friends and reassess their server choice once things calm down a little.

When New World server transfers initially went live, the process resulted in a few unintended glitches, including a gold duplication bug that led to the transfers being closed down again. Transfers were re-enabled with the 1.0.4 update. There are a few things you need to know before packing your bags and leaving for a new server - here's how to transfer your New World character.
