Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier finally has a proper release date. After extensive teasing and testing, Square Enix has announced that the launch for the iOS and Android versions of the game will take place in November, and pre-registration for the titles will be open later this month, as per producer Tetsuya Nomura.
Announced back in February, Final Fantasy 7: The First Soldier is a multiplayer battle royale shooter that seems to be taking a mobile-first approach to development.
The First Soldier is set in Midgar, 30 years prior to the events of the main game. You play as one of many Soldier candidates all vying for survival to prove their worth for the Shira military. As you'd expect, then, the bulk of the gameplay is mostly shooting, but you can also make use of magic abilities and other Final Fantasy tools – including summons – to help your character out.
Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida provided a small update during about the game's developmnet during a Tokyo Game Show live stream this weekend, and noted that the game is perhaps closer to completion that people may have thought.
Yet, despite not showing more gameplay or debuting a new trailer at the show, we did hear something else – a small update on the game courtesy of Yoshida.
At first blush Muse Games' Embr put us in mind of riotous slapstick comedy titles such as Overcooked and Tarsier Games' excellent The Stretchers. This is a bright and colourful multiplayer-focused mess of firefighting carnage that also presents itself as a wry satirical take on the state of 21st Century capitalism. It's got the wonky physics, silly voice-acting, ridiculous stage layouts and upgrades that scream "this is all going to be a lot of over the top fun!" However, in reality it's all a bit of a damp squib.
The first thing we should mention about this Switch port of Embr is that we could not, over six full days of trying, find more than precisely two online games to join, both of which only had one other player in their lobby. Yes, you can arrange to play four player with a few Switch-owning friends — there is no splitscreen local multiplayer here — but the most immediate and easy option for finding other people to party up with in Embr is, judging by our experience, an absolute bust. Both the PC and Xbox versions (and we're assuming the Stadia version) support cross platform play, but the Switch version is missing this feature and it hurts the experience big time.
My wife really enjoys dynasty warriors, she enjoys the simplicity and ability to upgrade the characters. She just wants to be able to pick up the sticks after work and play something with me. I'm on a PC and really big into emulation so our only no-go is next gen consoles.
Valve has canceled all plans to have a live audience at its large-scale DOTA 2 tournament, the International, as the number of covid cases in the host city of Bucharest, Romania continues to increase. The company also announced all tickets will be refunded immediately.
The release of Half-Life: Alyx back in March 2020 was heralded as a great step forward for VR games, but - due to cost, space, or other reasons - a lot of people couldn't play it, which is sad considering it's the first Half-Life game from Valve since 2007.
There have been a number of attempts to create a VR-free mod for Half-Life: Alyx, but all have been a little janky and not much fun - if they have worked at all. However, while it's not out yet, the simply titled Half-Life: Alyx No VR Mod (thanks DSOGaming) has been showing off the best progress - and this week's update is the most startling yet.
It's the first progress update in several months, but the mod is coming together nicely - to the point where, if someone wasn't told Half-Life: Alyx was a VR game they wouldn't even notice. There's no word yet on how the game controls without the mod, but it seems to offer simple mouse and keyboard controls - with a twist.
Dota 2's biggest event of the year, The International 2021, kicks off in just a few days - but it's losing a major part of the show. Valve has announced that the show will no longer have a live audience and all ticket sales have either been refunded or cancelled "to ensure the safety" of everyone involved.
The International 2021 will take place in Bucharest, Romania from October 7 until October 17. The show in 2020 was cancelled due to the pandemic and the 2021 event was previously meant to run in August in Sweden - until Swedish officials decided that eSports didn't count as an "elite sporting event" so wouldn't offer visas.
The relocated event in Romania this month is still going ahead, but Valve has confirmed that members of the general public will not be able to attend in person - due to "the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania" and "new local restrictions in Bucharest" that might put the safety of attendees at risk.
