Aliens: Fireteam Elite was released on August 23 to mixed reviews, but on Steam it averaged around or above 10k players for the first few weeks after release. But a lack of content, small updates, and possibly the release of the popular Back 4 Blood recently have killed the player base on PC, with only 792 players…

The Riftbreaker is a base-building Diablo-like that's blowing up on Steam

The Riftbreaker is pulling from some winning formulas, taking the survival RTS mechanics of They Are Billions or Conan Unconquered and giving you a Diablo-style ARPG to play in the middle of it. But that doesn't make its execution on that combo any less impressive, and the newly-released game is starting to burn up the Steam charts.

The Riftbreaker puts you in the role of a mech-piloting scientist-commando out to settle uncharted worlds. You'll build bases to collect resources, and then defend those bases against massive hordes of enemies, using a combination of defensive buildings and your own weapons. It made our list of indie games to watch in October, and now that it's out it's quickly finding a fanbase.

The game has been quickly growing in popularity since launching on Steam on October 14. It reached a peak concurrent player record of 21,741 earlier today, as SteamDB shows, putting it near Steam's top 50 for the day. User reviews are currently sitting at a 91% 'very positive' rating. There's also a free demo available on the Steam store page, if you want to try before you buy.

     Minecraft 1.18 launches in

The Minecraft 1.18 release date is nearly upon us, though the devs at Mojang are still keeping a bit of wiggle room for the precise date. Still, they're narrowing down the Caves and Cliffs launch to within the next "month or two", because the update is "almost done", according to a presentation at Minecraft Live.

The plan is to launch the update simultaneously across both Bedrock and Java editions (which are, incidentally, both coming to Xbox Game Pass for PC). The two versions will now have seed parity, as well, meaning that you'll be able to see your favourite Minecraft seeds rendered almost identically in both versions of the game, aside from some minor details.

You also don't have to worry about your old worlds, even with all the changes the new world generation will bring. Your 1.17 worlds will carry forward into 1.18 without issue. Terrain blending will ensure that old and new content transitions naturally, and you'll find the deeper cave systems automatically generated underneath all your previously-explored areas, too.

     Minecraft's 1.19 update is The Wild – here's what's confirmed so far

Minecraft Live 2021 has come and gone, but not without a whole lot of detail about what to expect from Minecraft's next update. Well, Minecraft's next next update. The 1.18 release date with many of the Caves and Cliffs part two features is still coming this year, but now Minecraft 1.19 has been confirmed as The Wild update, launching in 2022.

The Wild will feature a major swamp update including mangrove trees. Mangrove trees will grow from propagules which can be planted underwater or on land, and they'll grow up into big masses of root blocks with vines hanging down around them. You can harvest them for a new wood type. You'll also find full-on mangrove swamp biomes.

Frogs will also debut here, complete with animated croaks. They'll start as tadpoles (which you can put into a bucket), and grow into one of three variant frogs - snowy, swamp, or tropical - based on the temperature of the biome they mature in. Frogs will eat fireflies, which are also getting added in The Wild, and will hop toward lily pads when they can - they might also be tempted into a fall by dripleaves.

Dota 2's next hero is Marci, coming ahead of Dragon's Blood: Book Two in January

While I will be forever grumpy that Netflix continues to call animated series made outside of Japan 'anime', I will not be upset that Dota: Dragon's Blood is now influencing Valve's own MOBA. As part of The International this weekend, Valve announced that the next hero for Dota 2 will be Marci, who debuted in Netflix's Dota: Dragon's Blood show.

The trailer says that "Marci joins the fight this fall", and if you haven't checked your calendar lately, we are in the autumn season - so expect Marci to appear in-game sometime before December 21. No details yet on her abilities, but as the official announcement puts it, you'll be able to "unleash the dauntless strength of Marci as she proves some loyalties transcend barriers and takes her place amongst the most stalwart heroes in Dota 2."

A second season of Dota: Dragon's Blood was also announced with a new trailer this weekend too. Studio Mir is once again taking the reins for Book Two, which is set to hit Netflix in January 2022.

The Suicide Squad game gets another cinematic trailer – at least it's in-game this time

We got another look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League as part of DC Fandome this weekend, but if you were hoping for something beyond an additional cinematic trailer here, well… you might want to prepare for disappointment. The new trailer at least appears to be made up of in-game footage this time around, but it's all cinematics, and we still don't have much idea of how the game will actually play.

While last year's teaser already introduced us to an apparently-evil Superman, the new trailer shows us developer Rocksteady's take on the remainder of the Justice League. The Flash appears to be affected by whatever malady Superman has, though Wonder Woman does not - Green Lantern (the John Stewart version) is also here, though it's tougher to tell his alignment in the quick trailer shots.

Batman is notably absent from the trailer, though Penguin makes an appearance. (An earlier teaser screen seems to suggest an appearance from Lex Luthor, too.) We're also getting a less notably superheroic representative of the DC universe in Amanda Waller, here portrayed by Debra Wilson, who has also lent her likeness and performance to games including Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Star Wars: Jedi - Fallen Order.

Minecraft's allay mob wins the vote and will automatically collect items for you

October 17, 2021 The allay won the mob vote, so it'll be added to Minecraft.

We've said farewell to Minecraft Live 2021, and the devs at Mojang once again provided us with a selection of new mobs to choose between for inclusion in the game. The ultimate winner was the item-collecting allay, which will be added to Minecraft as part of the Wild update in 2022.

The allay looks like a little blue fairy with bat wings. If you give it an item, it will go pick up nearby dropped items of the same type. But, as the devs note on Twitter, it won't duplicate that item or rifle through chests for it - it's purely about picking up that item when it's dropped on the overworld. The allay will then drop the collected items near a note block, apparently because it loves to dance.

The other options this year were the glare, a darkness-fearing little guy that was voted out in the first round, and the copper golem, a craftable pal that would run around pushing copper buttons. There's always a possibility that the losers of the vote may be added to the game eventually, but there's certainly no guarantee of that. Last year's winner was the glow squid.
