Intel Alder Lake gaming CPUs reviews round-up – what do the critics think?

It's fair to say that Intel's new 12th generation Core processors have a lot of ground to make up, with the company losing substantial market share to AMD's Ryzen CPUs for the past few years. However, Alder Lake is different from every x86 desktop chip we've ever had, featuring a hybrid design of performance and efficiency cores which could lead the way for all future processors from not just Intel but AMD as well.

There've been numerous leaks surrounding the Core i9-12900K and Core i5-12600K, with Intel formally confirming their specifications and prices at its Intel Innovation event this past October. The price of the Alder Lake lineup ranges between $264-$589 USD, which is comparative to the cost of AMD's existing Ryzen 5000 offerings.

However, the question remains whether these Alder Lake processors can rank among the best gaming CPUs on the market, and how much of a lead team blue can create of over team red before the arrival of Zen 4 in 2022.

Football Manager 2022 review – peerless planning

If there is a consistent thread in the changes that Football Manager 2022 - which you can buy here - makes to its winning formula, it's that this is a brilliant reflection of how modern football works. Stats, staff meetings, and processes matter more than ever, but for all the hours you can pour into match momentum charts and xG curves, the only thing that matters is how the team performs on the field. And if you can't react when you're a goal down, if you can't see the gaps in midfield, or understand why your wingers are constantly backtracking, then you're going to struggle, your team's going to turn on you, and eventually you'll be looking for a new club to take you in.

That's not to say that additions like the new data hub aren't welcome, more that it complements an already robust, grounded simulation game. This new tab in the main menu bundles all of the tricky graphs, xG (expected goals) data, and pass maps into one quick-look page. An 'ask an analyst' option is hidden away in there too, which is probably the most powerful tool of the lot, returning a stack of graphs based on the keywords you type in. A creeping sense that your team is struggling to keep clean sheets can be turned into actionable objectives by simply searching for 'defender' and scanning a few graphs.

Despite hovering around the automatic promotion places, Fulham (or my Fulham, at least) have one of the poorest defensive records in the league. The culprit? We're just not tackling enough, and in particular our star signing from Torino, Alessandro Buongiorno, has made the fewest tackles in the whole league. I could drop him, but his marking and aerial qualities are among the best in the league. Instead I adjust his training schedule to improve aggression and ground defence, and this helps a little, but a few matches later we're still looking leaky at the back. Further investigation reveals that our back four aren't getting much help from our defensive midfielders, who I've been playing in supporting and attacking roles all season.

Total War: Warhammer III gets new release date and day one Game Pass PC launch

Within the Total Warhammer community there is a meme about Tuesdays being 'newsdays', but that meme may have to make way for Thursday, because Creative Assembly has taken today by storm with a trifecta of news we can most definitely use. Not only do we have a new Total War: Warhammer III release date, we also know what the early-adopter bonus race will be, and finally, it seems Warhammer III is coming to Game Pass for PC on day one.

Our resident Warhammer nerd (and fearless leader) Rich has been betting on the Ogre Kingdoms being in the strategy game pretty much since Warhammer III was announced, and they were all but confirmed when Ogres were introduced into Warhammer II earlier this year. It'd be silly to waste all of those art assets, after all.

Today's announcement finally confirms that, yes, Ogre Kingdoms will be a playable Warhammer III race. They will come with their own dedicated faction mechanics, unit roster, campaign, and two legendary lords - Greasus Goldtooth and Skrag the Slaughterer. More details on this race will be revealed in the coming weeks and months. Anyone who pre-orders Warhammer III or buys it within the first week of launch will get the Ogre Kingdoms Warhammer III DLC pack for free, after which it will be made available for anyone to purchase for a fee.

Elden Ring has a Breath of the Wild-style map system

We've been treated to a generous 15 minutes of Elden Ring gameplay today ahead of its launch early next year. There was a lot to see - and you can catch it all below if you missed it or want to bask in it all over again - but one of the real highlights was a showcase of the fantasy game's map system, which has some handy Breath of the Wild-like features.

During the gameplay reveal stream, FromSoftware has shown that Elden Ring's map, like those in other sprawling, open-world games, can be a very handy tool in exploring its expansive world - but some of its most helpful features go beyond what you might ordinarily find. Elden Ring's map is populated by finding 'map fragments', the devs explain. Once you're in the in-game map viewer, you can then use custom markers - somewhat akin to BotW's pins and stamps - to make navigating to and recalling points of interest much easier.

For example, the stream shows a range of different marker icons with various symbols that you can plonk onto the map to denote places and things you've discovered, or might want to pursue later. These might be for crafting materials or dangerous enemies you've come across, for instance.

Best Black Friday deals on gaming RAM

There are not as many bells and whistles to fuss over when picking out RAM deals when compared to something like the best gaming monitor, but you won't get very far with a new build without a stick or four of good quality memory. In case you're new to all this PC gaming lark, RAM is your system's short-term memory and you'll likely need at least 16GB of it in your system to run most modern games well.

That's not to say that all RAM is the same or that 16GB is the limit. If you aim to run your games alongside a few Chrome tabs and Discord, or you want to dabble in video editing, then 32GB might be necessary - anything less and you can expect the odd hitch in performance when multitasking. Then there's the clock speed, which is a hotly debated aspect that isn't too impactful on your game. The safest bet is to go for a 3,000MHz clock speed setup as a minimum.

Oh, and don't forget there's a vital choice to be made when it comes to RGB lighting on your RAM. It seems like a ludicrous and unnecessary addition, but there's no quicker way to tell if you've properly clicked in your sticks than being assaulted by flashing colours.

New World update brings changes targeting coin selling, exploits, and bugs

The New World devs are rolling out a patch - Update 1.0.5, if you want to be fancy - that looks to combat various issues that have been cropping up in-game of late. Alongside a hearty round of bug fixes and gameplay changes to improve combat and Outpost Rush, the patch also introduces some updates aimed at addressing coin selling and duplication-related exploits.

First up are the coin selling-focussed changes. "We know many of you have seen the pesky chat messages from players spamming messages, and we're continuing to investigate solutions to this issue," the MMORPG's devs explain in the patch notes. "We discovered that many coin sellers were creating new characters and transferring money to other accounts." To address this, the devs are rolling out several changes, which include new restrictions on player-to-player trading and currency transfers for characters less than 72 hours old and below level ten. These restrictions lift once characters hit the new thresholds.

Additionally, the devs have shifted the value of some of the MMO's early-game quest rewards over to ones that come later in the main story questline. The total amount of coin earned will be the same, mind - it's "just delivered in quests slightly later". Alongside these updates, the team also says it's rolled out bans and suspensions to "many of the reported accounts", and adds that it'll continue to monitor the impact these various changes have on the game's bots and health, with more adjustments to follow if needed.

Robbers go Fast & Furious on a truckload of EVGA-branded Nvidia RTX 3000 GPUs

The Ongoing GPU shortage situation is a sore spot for gaming PC enthusiasts, especially since supplies might not increase until 2023. Sadly, a bunch of graphics card crooks just made the situation a whole lot worse, as an entire truckload of EVGA RTX 3000 series cards have been stolen during transit.

In a recent forum post, EVGA revealed that its stock was pinched from a truck "en route from San Francisco to our Southern California". The notice also states that the company is aware of each graphics card taken during the incident, with individual values ranging from $329.99 to $1,959.99 MSRP.

Naturally, this suggests that GPUs from across the entire Nvidia RTX 3000 series are now missing from the supply chain, and many of the cards will likely end up on the reseller market. As a result, EVGA is advising shoppers to ask for proof of purchase before buying any related products on the second-hand market. The notice is also quick to note that it's a civil offence to "buy or receive" the company's swindled stock, so you might want to think twice before you go searching on the likes of Craigslist.

The best Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies covenants

The key to surviving a Zombies run is to ensure that all of your upgrades have some level of synergy. While some combinations of covenants are powerful on their own, using them alongside particular Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies perks improves your chances of getting out alive. So, in a way, covenants can make the difference between life and death.

Before you go spending your hearts on the first upgrade that you see, it's worth considering how well these covenants work with your current loadout and perks. Here's what every Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies covenant does, as well as some tips for potential synergies worth considering for your run.

Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies perks

Want to know more about Call of Duty Vanguard zombies perks? It seems we don't have to wait until the next Treyarch-developed game in the long-running series to get a Call of Duty Vanguard zombies mode, ominously named 'Der Anfang' or 'The Beginning'. The mode takes place across four locations: Stalingrad, Merville, Paris, and Shi No Numa. You play as one of several new characters and must survive against Wolfram Von List as he raises the dead to fight you; a dark power gifted to him from Kortifex the Deathless.

Zombies mode has plenty of new ways to help you defend yourself from the increasing threat of Von List's undead army. Vanguard Zombies covenants give you major buffs to aid you in the fight, and Vanguard Zombies dark aether entities bestow powerful artifacts that you can call upon when you're in a sticky situation.

There's also a reworked perk system, and understanding how it works is vital to your survival. Here is how all of the current available perks work, and what you can do to increase their tier levels.

GTA Online weekly update brings go karts to Race Creator, extra heist rewards

It's Thursday, and GTA Online fans know what that means - it's time for the open-world game's next batch of weekly updates, discounts, and bumped-up rewards. As ever, fans have been checking out what's new in this week's update ahead of Rockstar Games' official newswire post later ontoday, so let's see what's now live.

First up, Tez2 reports that this week brings go karts to GTA Online's Race Creator - the game's tool for, surprise surprise, creating races. This lets players put together their own custom races across land, sea, and air types (I think we can safely assume go karts would be best suited to the former), and different modes - so, you can pick standard A-to-B style events, rally races, non-contact options, and so on. There are plenty other modifiers you can tweak, too - Rockstar has a handy guide to using the Race Creator at that link.

Elsewhere this week, there are double $GTA and RP rewards across four modes: original heists (presumably the ones that arrived with the initial Heists update back in 2015), auto shop deliveries, exotic exports, and motor wars. There's also double RP up for grabs for the Humane Labs last team standing mode.

Intel Alder Lake i9-12900K and i5-12600K gaming CPU review arrives early

Today marks the official launch of Intel's Alder Lake processors, in which team blue is hoping to take back AMD's gaming CPU crown with its new hybrid core design. We'll be posting a roundup of third-party reviews later today, once the embargo is lifted, but YouTube channel LinusTechTips has already accidentally posted its review.

Twitter user Ayxerious (via Videocardz) was able to capture screenshots of the video review, covering gaming and performance benchmarks, as well as power consumption readings. To summarise the findings, it looks like Intel's Alder Lake chips are shaping up to be some of the best gaming CPUs money can buy.

Across the six leaked game benchmarks, both the Intel Core i9-12900K and Intel Core i5-12600K beat the AMD Ryzen 5 5950X in all but Counter Strike: Global Offensive. This is particularly surprising as the i5-12600K costs $289 USD, which is more than $500 USD less than the AMD flagship.

Rust's November update brings desert bases and new rocket launching system

Rust's November 2021 update is nearly here, and developer Facepunch has now revealed what's coming the survival game's way with it. There are two major additions this month, which are aimed at letting players set themselves up with military bases in  the desert and then blowing enemies ("or anyone nearby") to smithereens.

With the November update, Rust is getting "fully procedural military bases" which will be different on every server, every server wipe, Facepunch explains in a press release. These bases' structures and layouts draw from a pool of individual modules and will fill four different templates. In each you'll find "a few" places of entry and some "regular regular loot with a sprinkle of oil". Apparently, the scientists that hang about by the bases won't be thrilled to see players approach, though, so be prepared to face resistance from them.

Perhaps most importantly, at each desert military base monument you'll find a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) parked up. This is a vehicle that you can use to fire off up to 12 rockets at any target - not including safe zones, of course - which can pack a serious punch against bases and "unprotected targets of opportunity (hello, zerg hordes)". SAM sites can counter these to some extent, but you'll need multiple of them to completely fight off a full barrage of 12 rockets - two SAM sites can only partially repel this many, though three sites should do the trick if faces with the full whack.

GTA podium car: here's what vehicle you can win in GTA Online

What is the GTA 5 podium car this week? GTA Online vehicles are expensive things, so we're happy to take a spin on the Diamond Casino's Lucky Wheel to get a discount. Winning isn't guaranteed, sure, but it isn't out of the question either. Look, we don't have a problem - leave it alone.

You can spin the Diamond Casino's Lucky Wheel once a day, and each Podium Car refreshes after seven days on a Thursday. Basically, you have seven shots to get the vehicle of that given week. If you own a Penthouse, you can spin it for free, but if you don't it's $500 a spin. Don't fret if you don't win, though, as you can win something else. You have a one in 20 chance of getting the podium vehicle, a car discount, or a mystery prize. There's a four in 20 chance of getting clothes, chips, and cash. Finally, there's a five in 20 chance of getting RP.

Keeping tabs on the GTA Online podium car can be a bother, though, so we're going to keep this GTA 5 guide updated so you have somewhere to check back on. On that note, here's the GTA 5 podium car for this week.

GTA Prize Ride challenge – what is the Prize Ride this week?

The GTA Online Los Santos Tuners update introduced plenty of new content, all focused on the city's underground tuner scene. There's a new 'social space', called the LS Car Meet, where you can show off your souped-up cars, race with fellow gearheads, and take on jobs - here's how to join the LS Car Meet in the Los Santos Tuners update.

Throughout your time spent in the Car Meet, you can level up your reputation and unlock new benefits as you progress. There's also a huge Test Track inside the warehouse, where you can try out Test Rides - a great opportunity to take different vehicles for a spin.

Becoming an LS Car Meet member sets you back $50,000 in-game bucks, but it grants you access to a bunch of underground shops - the Merch Shop, Tattoo Shop, and a Modding Area where you can tweak your car in real time. At higher levels, you can create your own customised area in the Car Meet, called a Private Takeover. LS Car Meet members can also compete in Prize Ride challenges, in order to be in with a chance to win a Prize Ride.

Forza Horizon 5 reviews – our roundup of the critics' scores

The big day approaches for racing game fans. Forza Horizon 5 launches on November 9, but ahead of that date we've now got a good idea of what's headed our way. The Forza Horizon 5 reviews have begun rolling in, letting us know what's on the near horizon (hah) and whether Playground Games' latest will be worth your hard-earned pennies. So far, it seems the answer is a big, resounding 'yes'.

Reviews for the upcoming PC game are positively glowing across the board. The racing game, which takes players to the "vibrant and ever-evolving open world landscapes of Mexico", is sitting at a pretty stellar 91 on Metacritic across both PC and Xbox Series X, and 92 on Opencritic across all platforms. There are full marks among the critics' scores, with plenty of reviews putting it very near the top end of the scale, too - so it sounds like it's a not-to-miss for fans of the series and racing games more broadly.

IGN scores it a ten-out-of-ten (a 'masterpiece'), for example, concluding that Forza Horizon 5 is "the result of a racing studio at the peak of its craft and the best open-world racing game available". You can catch this and the other reviews we've rounded up through the links below.

Minecraft will finally let it rain after you sleep

If you regularly sleep in Minecraft - whether because you want to dodge phantoms or you just don't like the darkness - you probably haven't seen rain or a thunderstorm in quite a while. As we head toward the Minecraft 1.18 release date, snapshot betas have been previewing new features for that update, but a bug fix to make it rain again might just be the most exciting new feature of all.

"Sleeping now only resets the weather cycle if it was raining", as the patch notes explain. A report on the official bug tracker explains the issue in a bit more detail. Sleeping is meant to skip the current weather conditions, so you can sleep through a thunderstorm, but up to this point, sleeping has reset the weather cycle entirely. So if you sleep every night, it would be unlikely to ever rain. That'll no longer be an issue once this update goes live.

Snapshot 21W44A also makes some improvements to the new world generation system, allowing caves to be "inserted under existing chunks when upgrading a world to the new world height" - meaning you'll be able to enjoy the deeper caves just fine when you upgrade your old worlds.

Lost Ark is a free-to-play action RPG-inspired MMO that came out to great acclaim in Korea back in 2018. Now, Amazon Games are bringing its flashy, Diablo-like combat to the west in the form of a closed beta later today, and we've had an early sneak peek at it. Of course, what with Amazon's own MMO New World now settling into its third month, not to mention Final Fantasy 14's Endwalker expansion looming on the horizon, Lost Ark arrives at a busy time for fervent EXP grinders. The big question, then, is whether Lost Ark's Diablo-y formula can do enough to compete with the already well-established MMO juggernauts. Judging by my few hours of hands-on time, I'm thinking it might, but only if you're able to embrace its slow burn.

The Intel Core i5-12600K is, in some ways, the CPU that Intel should have made three or four years ago. Ever since AMD's Ryzen chips appeared with an alluring balance of gaming speed, desktop multitasking performance, efficiency, and affordability, Intel seemed to sink into a comfort zone of simply raising clock speeds and maybe adding a few cores.

This was often enough to earn some half-throated recommendations for gaming builds specifically, but this past year proved that something needed to change, with the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X claiming the best gaming CPU title and 11th Gen Rocket Lake Intel chips – like the 5600X's rival Core i5-11600K – looking thoroughly skippable. For those who did decide to wait until the 12th Gen Alder Lake launch, consider yourselves vindicated, as the Core i5-12600K is a great all-rounder: both a Ryzen-beater in games and, thanks to a long-overdue architecture revamp, a drastically better general purpose processor.

XCOM studio Firaxis have announced a delay for Marvel's Midnight Suns, their turn-based tactics game in the BAM! BIF! POW! world of Marvel superheroes. Previously due in March 2022, it's now pushed back into the second half of 2022. I say "previously"; the game was only announced two months ago. Sounds like someone had a serious rethink about the state of the project. But if it needs the time, it's good that it's getting the time.

If you love slicing and dicing enemy players, this may be the best melee weapon yet. The Hammer and Sickle is a dual wield weapon.      Black Ops Cold War And Warzone Unlock LAPA new challengeCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone's The Haunting event has concluded. This saw the debut of Ghostface and Donnie Darko bundles, a Ghosts of Verdansk game mode, and more. Also, you wouldn't want to miss out on having an extra weapon to use on the battlefield.   How to unlock the LAPA submachine gun with a new Black Ops Cold War or Warzone challenge The new LAPA challeng...

FH5Over the course of its brief history, the Forza Horizon series has become synonymous with over-the-top spectacles and sky-high action levels. Even so, Forza Horizon 5 has set a new precedent in terms of not just delivering on expectations but somehow exceeding them. It achieves all of this while giving players the perfect runway to lead into the madness, as evidenced by Forza Horizon 5's intro. From 0 to 100, real quick Horizon 5's Mexico is pretty big; the biggest map in the series. So, what better way to get players acquainted than giving them a dynamic tour? Sure, all that could be done with some pictures and a look at the map, but instead you get taken on a journey in the most bombastic way possible. Or rather, in typical Horizon fashion. First off, the game opens with you speeding down the side of its prominent set piece, La Gran Caldera volcano, in a Ford Bronco after just being dropped out of an airplane, which then sets the tone for the next few minutes. From th...
