Civ 6 strategy guide: beginner tips and tutorials

Even all these years after release, a Civilization VI strategy guide is always handy as new players are always discovering this seminal 4X game for the first time. Even if you're a Civilization veteran, it might be time to dust off your internal Civilopedia and reacquaint yourself with the basics of world domination.

To help facilitate this, we've put together a beginner's guide explaining many of the basic concepts of the strategy game, from where to found your first city, to diplomacy, warfare, and the game's victory conditions. Use this primer as a way to get acquainted with the game, before tackling more complex strategies and elements.

Please note that certain aspects of Civilization VI change dramatically depending on what Civ 6 DLC you own. For example, Gathering Storm introduced environmental hazards and pollution, as well as the Diplomatic victory. Barring a few cases, we're sticking to universal concepts that can apply no matter what version of the game you're running, although to be honest vanilla Civ VI pales in comparison to how the game plays with both of the primary expansions. We've also not mentioned content from the recent New Frontier Pass either, although you should read our thoughts, as well as this overview of the most recent balance patch, to get an idea as to what state the game is in currently.

Halo Infinite's next Tenrai event features more armour and less XP boosts

343 Industries has confirmed that Halo Infinite's next Tenrai event will feature items that were previously only available in the store in place of most challenge swaps and XP boosts. The team has held a community stream for the holidays, where head of design Jerry Hook reflected on the game's multiplayer launch and outlined some changes moving forward.

Hook admits that he "didn't do a good enough job" in reviewing the assets that went out with marketing for the Tenrai event, which led the team to show off the Yoroi armour to build up excitement. The problem, though, was that various parts of the gear were purchasable in the shop. Moving forward, the team wants it to be clear whether something it's showing off is free or from the store.

"The problem is that they showed a mixed samurai," Hook says. "Our goal is always that if you see something for earn in a season and it's earnable in an event track, you can't earn that gear in the shop or the battle pass - it's dedicated to your events."

Western Digital's 1TB NVMe SSD is half price over on Amazon

The best SSD can make all the difference when it comes to PC gaming, and high capacity PCIe drives are more affordable than ever. Sure, getting a hold of the best graphics card possible is a priority for most enthusiasts, but since stock from Nvidia and AMD is scarce, it's wise to focus on the parts you can upgrade. So, if you still have a rickety old hard drive whittling away in your rig, you might want to consider a switcheroo, as Western Digital's 1TB NVMe SSD is currently half price.

The WD Black SN750 is a fantastic investment that could give your old PC or gaming laptop a new lease of life. Featuring respective read and write speeds up to 3,430Mbps and 3,000Mbps, this sappy solid-state drive should help Windows boot faster and save you from staring at loading screens when playing your favourite games.

Over on Amazon US, you can grab 52% off a WD Black SN750 1TB SSD, shaving its price down from $249.99 to $119.99. If you reside in the UK, you can also snap up a similar SSD deal, as it's currently got 21% off at £85.79.

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker is so popular devs are suspending sales again

Square Enix is temporarily suspending digital sales of Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker due to the popularity of the new expansion. Director and producer Naoki Yoshida has delivered an update on the MMO's login times and server congestion, further confirming that the free trial will also be suspended and that players will be getting more free game time.

"Players are currently experiencing extremely long wait times due to the dense concentration of play hours which far exceed our server capacity, especially during the peak times, and so we have decided to temporarily suspend the sale and delivery of Final Fantasy XIV's starter and complete edition," Yoshida says. "Additionally, although those with an active subscription are prioritised to log in, free trial players are unable to log in outside of late night and early morning hours, and so we will also temporarily suspend new registrations for the free trial."

Yoshida explains that the temporary suspensions will be phased in over the next few days and that the team will pull all new advertisements for the expansion. If you're an existing player, expansion packs and collector's edition digital upgrades will continue to be available.

League of Legends patch 12.1 notes – Elderwood skins, Janna changes

The first patch of the League of Legends 2022 season has hit the PBE. League of Legends patch 11.24 has headed to live servers to make its debut on the Rift and, following a bunch of teases from Riot Games on social media, the latest batch of new content has begun trickling onto the testing grounds ready for patch 12.1's arrival in the live game soon. Let's take a look.

First up, we've got some new Elderwood skins on the way, this time for lucky champions Gnar and Rek'Sai. Riot also revealed a new skin for Ekko called Firelight Ekko, which is inspired by his style in the tremendously successful LoL spin-off Netflix show Arcane. However, this now won't be shipping with 12.1 as "an unfortunate mistake on [the studio's] part due to a miscommunication internally" means that the skin wasn't given new special effects, which the team now wants to make sure it adds. So, the skin has been taken off the PBE for now and will return in a few patches' time.

As is is very often the case when a patch has only just hit the PBE, we don't have many balance changes to check out just yet. However, there are some pretty big changes coming to champion Janna, which you can see below - and you can probably expect a batch of wider changes soon.

Genshin Impact new characters in the 2.3 update and beyond

Looking for more information about the new characters coming to Genshin Impact? Since its release in 2020, the addictive anime game has seen plenty of regular updates expanding on the game's content - and adding several new characters by way of limited time banners.

According to Mihoyo's Genshin Impact roadmap, they aim to release new updates every six weeks - and if past experience is anything to go by, during each new patch, there will be at least one new banner with a new Genshin Impact five-star character, and possible new four-star characters included as well. That said, several new Genshin Impact characters have been added outside of this schedule, like Genshin Impact Klee - so we could see new characters arrive unexpectedly, too.

Arataki Itto and Gorou are the next new characters to arrive in the Genshin Impact 2.3 update, but there are also a few leaks and some datamined information concerning new characters that may appear in future Genshin Impact updates and beyond. However, until they're officially announced, these characters are not final and may be subject to changes.

This latest OlliOlli game swaps out the 2D style for a cel-shaded 3D world that looks absolutely lovely. Or radical. Or sick. Or other skater words. The action-platformer's plot sounds great too, it drops you into Radlandia on a search for the skate gods. Skate gods! Don't anger them, kiddos, they'll break your collarbones.

Here I was thinking Tetris 99 was the strangest game to be turned into a battle royale, but now you can fight to the death in Scrabble too. Babble Royale is a new Scrabble-like battle royale where 16 players fight to be the last letters standing. You have to make words in such a way that you escape a zone that's closing in, and attack other players by building words off of theirs. I honestly didn't think it would work, but man, it absolutely does.

Final Fantasy XIV is suffering from success, thanks, in part, to its recently released Endwalker expansion. Despite updates to ease server errors and long queue times, players are still struggling to log into the game. So, Square Enix have only gone and done it. They've temporarily suspended sales of the game, as well as new registrations for the free trial version. Even adverts are being stopped for now.
