We're almost a year out from the releases of both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X/S, and the prevailing topic for the generation isn't the games you can play on the new hardware but how hard it is to get your hands on a console. According to an executive at AMD, the chip supplier for Sony and Microsoft's gaming machines, the drought is not quite at an end. Though, there is light at the end of the tunnel.

From a recent CNBC article, AMD CEO Lisa Su described the component supply for even the start of 2022 as "likely tight." The shortage has been caused by an increase in demand since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. With companies and consumers transitioning to an at-home workplace, the parts manufacturers use to build devices like laptops and desktop computers were bought up quickly, and companies like AMD are still catching up to demand. With the workforce shift to home, the confinement of quarantine also led to a need for entertainment, which products like PlayStation, Xbox, and graphics cards for PCs exacerbated the demand even further. "The pandemic has just taken demand to a new level," said Su in the CNBC story.

While the next six to eight months or so are looking thin for the availability of these parts, investments made by AMD in new manufacturing facilities will start to see fruition soon. "It might take, you know, 18 to 24 months to put on a new plant, and in some cases even longer than that," Su says about the timeline of getting these fresh plants up and running. "These investments were started perhaps a year ago." AMD's investment is in setting up other manufacturers to make its products. It outsources because the company doesn't own the facilities for the production itself.

Those looking for a new PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series console will still most likely have a chance to find one this year, but availability will be noticeably lacking. If you're willing to wait, the second half of 2022 is looking to be when we see a significant jump in available tech across the board.

Sure, some of those players are probably sitting in a queue, but the Steam Charts for Amazon Games' New World show that the game's peak concurrency is somewhere around 913,000 players. What does that mean, exactly? That means 900,000 people are playing New World – at the same time.

That's a whole lot of boar hunting, lumber chopping, and blueberry bush picking. Can it go higher? There's no doubt that tons of people are hopping into the crafting, gathering, player-vs-player soiree. You can read a whole lot more about what I think of the game right here, but it's also fairly interesting to see New World rocket past many of the staunch Steam standbys like Counter-Strike and Dota 2.

Click here to watch embedded media

Now, will it be able to sustain these huge concurrent numbers? Not many do, but right now the fervor is hot for a new immersive MMORPG experience, and that seems to be reflected in these numbers. I went to war a few times to protect some purple cities in the last few days and they were pretty intense, but will the fire fade? Inevitably, there's always a drop after the surge, but new content, fixes for the many little bugs that are there, and more can keep the New World train rolling. After 100 hours, I'm still not at level cap and haven't seen the whole map yet, so there's lots to do for now. I still stop to harvest every iron vein I see. What do you think? Have you played New World? Are you interested in it?

Valheim gets jack-o-turnips and buffed combat stamina

Tis the season for spooky seasonal events, and Valheim is getting into the Halloween spirit. Sure, it's already got skeletons, wraiths, and an inescapable Viking purgatory, but now Valheim can truly help you prepare for the most all-hallowed of eves with jack-o-lanterns. Er, rather, with jack-o-turnips. The latest patch brings some seasonal charm and some nice quality-of-life tweaks.

As of patch 0.203.10, all melee weapons cost less stamina to use. Players have already figured out some more precise values than what's disclosed in the patch notes - axes, maces, and swords, for example, have gone from 12, 16, 20 stamina usage to 10, 12, 14. That's a pretty nice bit of extra breathing room, and there are similar values across most other melee weapon types.

The update also tweaks some food types "based on effort to craft". Boar jerky, deer stew, wolf jerky, and blood pudding have all been buffed, while minced meat and bread have both been gently nerfed.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 goes to church

SCS Software's truck sims give us a lovely bit of digital tourism around the world, and since Euro Truck Simulator 2 is heading deeper into Russia for its next DLC, it's time to admire some religious architecture. The devs are pouring special attention into the churches of Russia, from the grandest cathedrals to the most humble of local chapels.

"The Russian church architecture is unlike any other and it is truly rare to find a style so aesthetically complex anywhere in the world," as the devs explain in the full blog post. "Most of the churches are distinguished by their verticality, bright colors and multiple domes." And, indeed, the devs have gone to great lengths to accurately recreate each house of worship in-game - it's easy to recognise each compared with its real-life counterpart.

The Heart of Russia DLC was announced earlier this year, before the launch of Iberia, and it still does not have a concrete release date. The free 1.42 update for both ETS2 and ATS is now in testing, bringing mod support for the Convoy multiplayer mode in both games.

As it goes with Elden Ring, information is sparse between infoblasts by FromSoftware. We're at an in-between phase right now as that January 2022 launch date is still a few months away yet. In the meantime, one of Elden Ring's producers Yasuhiro Kitao did a quick interview during the Tokyo Games Show over the weekend to reiterate that yes, the game is difficult and also that it's nearly finished. You'd imagine so, at three months out. Kitao also talks just a bit about Elden Ring's map, too, and how the game doesn't use quests to drag you around its open world.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires release dateThis week is Tokyo Game Show, the yearly event — held in the city of its namesake — that highlights everything the Japanese games industry has to offer. We have already seen some appearances from hotly anticipated titles like River City Girls 2, with more to come throughout the show. Today, the latest entry in the long-running Dynasty Warriors series was shown off. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires gets a release date in a brand new trailer showcasing some of the game's new strategic elements. Like other entries in the series, Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires combines the traditional 1 vs. 1,000 action gameplay the series is known for with tactical RPG elements. This includes several new mechanics making their debut in the game. During large battles, once your army makes it to the gates of the enemy stronghold, a "Storming the Castle" sequence will take place. During this mid-mission encounter, players must fight through to enter the enemy fortress. Players in said ...

Dota 2 The International tickets canceled refundedThe ongoing pandemic continues to cause havoc, and today it took aim at Valve's The International 2021. Not only did the popular Dota 2 esports championship get delayed and moved out of Sweden, but now it will no longer be a live event. In a message to the community, Valve announced that it canceled all tickets for The International 2021. Those who purchased a ticket to the show will get a refund. The International 2021 was once scheduled to take place during August in Sweden. However, due to issues arising from the government, Valve quickly had to scramble for a new venue. Two weeks after Sweden's decision, the show had a new location of Bucharest, Romania. Tickets eventually went on sale for attendees. But today, three days before The International 2021 was set to crack off, Valve canceled all tickets and announced the refund.   "We have been carefully evaluating the continued rise of Covid rates in Romania, as well as the resulting introduction of new local...

Its global launch has been set for October 5, which has already come in some time zones. These downloads are official and being distributed by Microsoft, so there's no need to worry about it being a potentially hazardous (or even illegal) rip from an unauthorized source.      River City Girls 2 trailer castIn the past several months, publisher Arc System Works and developer WayForward have shared very little about River City Girls 2, the upcoming sequel to 2019's successful brawler River City Girls. Although the companies have revealed small tidbits about the game, such as the playable characters and a few screenshots, they refrained from showing any gameplay footage. That all changed two days ago, as Arc System Works posted the first official trailer for River City Girls 2 on the company's YouTube page. As of right now, no English version of the new trailer exists. Viewers who do not know Japanese will not get anything from the trailer's text and abundant dialogue. Having said that, the trailer features quite a bit of never-before-seen gameplay, which should excite most fans of the original game no matter the language barrier.   As one would expect, the gameplay appears quite similar to the original game, but it differs in that it features four new playable cha...

Tokyo Game Show 2021 concluded over the weekend, and we're still learning great nuggets of information from the various streams and interviews during the event. One highlight was a Famitsu-hosted interview with Naoki Yoshida and Hironobu Sakaguchi, two developers who represent the present and past of the Final Fantasy series, respectively. Yoshida is currently heading the development of Final Fantasy XVI and has been the driving force behind the resurrection of Final Fantasy XIV Online since A Realm Reborn. Sakaguchi is, of course, the creator of Final Fantasy and has most recently released the mobile RPG Fantasian.

Some news slipped about Final Fantasy XVI when the topic switched to why Sakaguchi and Yoshida were drawn to the RPG genre. Yoshida questions what to even call Final Fantasy XVI since so many games have RPG elements. He reveals that Final Fantasy XVI has an "expansive" skill tree. After mentioning the one present in Fantasian, a skill tree that gives players the sense of the game opening up for character growth, Yoshida says XVI has something similar.

Also mentioned in the discussion, Yoshida confirms the scenario for FFXVI is complete, and the team is working on finishing side quests and working on the 3D models. He brings up the team's small size during scenario planning and the ramp-up in staff needed when building the rest of the game. Sakaguchi presses him lightly for a time frame for release, but unfortunately, Yoshida holds that bit of information back. Thanks for putting on the journalist hat for a minute, Sakaguchi. We appreciate the effort.

Check out the rest of the interview in the video above to watch an interesting conversation between two game dev luminaries who happen to sit on opposite ends of one of gaming's biggest franchises.

Even just recently, Destiny 2 is adding a full-auto mode while EA are sharing their accesibility feature patents. The recently launched Accessible Games Database aims to help catalog games by a list of different accessibility features. It's launched with over 140 games logged so far, and the creators say they're planning to add more every day.
