Play the OG way.

One of the standout releases on the Nintendo Switch this year has been the enhanced version of the original Quake title, celebrating 25 years of id Software's first-person arena shooter.

The game got its "first major update" for the Switch and multiple other platforms last week, but one thing you might have missed is that mouse and keyboard is now fully supported on Nintendo's hybrid platform - allowing you to play the game with its OG control style.

Microsoft is one of the first major tech comapnies to respond to calls to re-examine its stance on right to repair, and has pledged to re-think it's stance on the subject and make changes to its policies by the end of next year.

Per Grist and the shareholder advocacy group As You Sow, Microsoft is willing to address the concerns of the right to repiar movement, and has agreed to hire an independent consultant to look into the benefits of giving consumers more tools and rights when it comes to repairing their own tech.

Traditionally, access to parts and repair documentation has been made intentionally tricky for consumers as companies like Apple, Microsoft and Samsung prefer to coax consumers into using expensive repair partners or buying new products outright to replace faulty goods.

Rockstar has finally announced Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition, a game collecting GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, and GTA: San Andreas, released in one collection. But the official details from Rockstar about the title remain a little thin. Luckily, the worst kept gaming secret of 2021 continues to spill more of its details even after its official announcement.

First up, we've got an inclination as to what the collection's price may end up being. Retailer Base.com opened pre-orders for The Definitive Edition collection last week, with a premium price tag listed at $70 / £70 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S (thanks, Resetera).

Right now, these are just reports – the listings could have been published as placeholders, or similar – but we won't be surprised if this ends up being the actual final price for the collection. After all, back in March 2021, Take-Two once again clarified its stance on raising game prices and reckoned that we, as consumers, are ready for $70 games.

Grotto is a unique narrative adventure game launching this month that drops you in the mystical role of a tribal Soothsayer, a fancy term for a fortune teller. Your primitive tribe is in trouble, so the superstitious clan turns to you for guidance. Be careful what you tell them, though; your fortunes have a significant impact on their lives, for better or worse.

Divining the fates of the beast-like villagers includes drawing constellations, reading bones, predicting the future, and even contacting the afterlife. While you possess some degree of supernatural ability, it's up to you to interpret the meanings of otherworldly phenomena and communicate them to the tribe. Your followers, who you'll get to know better through numerous visits, take everything you say as gospel, and your fortunes influence their actions, which can be to their benefit or lead them to disaster and even death. Think hard about what you want a star pattern to mean; you wouldn't want to inadvertently lead someone you like astray, would you? With a striking blend of colorful 2D and 3D art, Grotto looks as unique as its premise. Check out the original announcement trailer below.

Click here to watch embedded media

Grotto comes from the aptly named Brainwash Gang and launches on October 20 on PC with a Steam demo available now. The game is also coming to PlayStation/Xbox consoles and Switch early next year.

Where is my mind?

Every now and then, a game comes along that feels completely unique. Now, we know what you're thinking: you've seen the same thing said about countless titles over the years — what makes this one so different? We get it; more often than not, when a game is described as 'unique', you can probably identify at least a few well-worn tropes, and the same can be said with Disco Elysium: The Final Cut. This is a game that certainly features familiar individual mechanics, but when taken as a whole, there's really nothing else like it in gaming right now.

Disco Elysium has been around for a while on other platforms and chances are by now if you've seen any gameplay or commentary around the game, then you already know whether or not it's going to be up your alley (which would also save us the unenviable job of actually explaining what the heck it's all about). This release on Switch carries the subtitle 'The Final Cut', delivering what appears to be the definitive version of the game; but we'll get into what's been added a bit later.

"If anybody gives you s*** for it, we'll take responsibility".

There was a time when Travis Touchdown was considered a good shout for a spot on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster, and while he technically did make his way into the game as a Mii Fighter costume, the real collab actually ended up appearing in No More Heroes 3.

As those who have played the game already will know, No More Heroes 3 features a number of special matches which change up the game's usual formula, often taking on characteristics of other game genres or specific well-known titles. In danger of spoiling the game for anyone who hasn't finished it yet (head back to safety now if you'd like), the final boss battle is very reminiscent of Super Smash Bros., and it turns out that Nintendo was completely on board.

Genshin Impact devs tease Itto, a Geo user with a claymore

Genshin Impact's 2.2 update is set to release this week, but Mihoyo is already teasing what's happening beyond that, the cheeky wee scamps. The developer has taken to Twitter to share some character information on two characters, one who you'll find familiar and another you won't have seen before - not in any official capacity, anyway.

First up, we have Arataki Itto, who is the boss of the Arataki gang, if the name wasn't a wee bit of a tease. Most of the information given fleshes out his character rather than providing any practical details - he's "an intrepid man with Oni blood running through his veins" who is "fast as the wind and mighty as thunder". From his image, though, we can see that he's a claymore user and wields the Geo element.

We've also got some more information about wee Gorou. The general of the Watatsumi Army is also a Geo user and can be seen wielding a bow in the picture posted to Twitter (below). As for your character teaser, he's "born with a beast-like fighting intuition and tenacious will" and can "find a way to victory even in the most critical moments".

HP desktop PC lists unannounced AMD Ryzen 7000 series gaming CPU

HP is notorious for accidentally announcing gaming PC components through product listings, with notable examples including mention of an Nvidia RTX 3080 Super GPU. Now, thanks to yet another collection of PC specs, it looks like AMD's Zen 4 wave of CPUs could be with us soon, and might feature in one of HP's all-in-one desktop PCs.

Spotted by Momomo_US, the HP spec sheet suggests the company's upcoming AIO build will feature a Ryzen 7000 series CPU as an option. Naturally, this could mean that HP knows something about AMD's next-generation processor plans. Still, it's admittedly hard to tell whether the processor's inclusion is legit or if it's been accidentally listed instead of the upcoming Zen 3 refresh.

Of course, while HP has potentially let team red's CPU cat out of the bag, it hasn't exactly revealed a release date. At the moment, the listing states that the PC is coming soon, meaning there's no solid launch date for the AIO. That said, the specs also include Intel's Alder Lake i7, which suggests the machine could release alongside team blue's next flagship later this year.

Star Trek-style simulation game Space Crew to get massive free expansion

Space simulation game Space Crew is a tongue-in-cheek Star Trek-style romp that mixes elements of FTL and other roguelites in a fun and friendly manner. In our review, we lamented the lack of management elements and meaningful choices, but we appreciated it for what it was.

So did plenty of others, it seems, as today publisher Curve Digital has announced that Space Crew: Legendary Edition will be dropping towards the end of the month. The new edition introduces a host of new content such as a new campaign, a new mechanic in the form of away missions, and even new 'legendary' crew members.

The campaign will see you take on a droid army led by a rogue group of androids, while the new crew members will feature superior stats and abilities compared to the regular crew. Finally, the new away missions can feature a range of challenges, from exploration and puzzles, to good old-fashioned gunfights. This expansion is not only the largest content drop for Space Crew to date, it's 100% free for existing owners of the base game.

Far Cry 6 weapons – all the best guns and unique weapons

We've collated a list of all the guns we've seen in Far Cry 6 so far. Our Far Cry 6 preview revealed that the next game in the shooter series leans into RPG elements. There isn't a skill tree or character perks, instead the game opts for weapon and armour customisation.

The gear on offer provides character stat buffs and abilities, such as armour that boosts stamina, gloves that negate fire, or shoes that automatically gather crafting materials you drive over. You can also carry up to four weapons, and you don't need to invest points into unlocking additional slots - so there's no tough decisions to make; no need to ditch your favourite gun early in the game.

That doesn't mean you won't be rotating weapons out, though, as you unlock better guns as you progress. Weapons correlate to your guerrilla rank; any loot you find corresponds to your current level, so while you start out with WWII SMGs and rifles, you'll eventually end up with modern weapons and state-of-the-art hardware.

Minecraft amethyst: how to find amethyst geodes and make a spyglass

Want to know how to mine amethysts and make a spyglass in Minecraft? The brand new Minecraft 1.17 update is here, and it brings with it brand new Minecraft mobs and blocks. While not everything has made it into the update, one of the more elaborate blocks that did was amethyst - another precious gemstone similar to diamonds and emeralds. You can make all sorts of items from amethysts, but the hard part here is finding an amethyst geode in the first place.

These are spherical structures found either underground (at level 70 or lower), or under the sea in the main overworld. You can tell when you've found one when you see smooth basalt. After chipping through the first layer with a pickaxe, you'll find calcite. This is the only place where you can find Minecraft calcite, though it's only really used for decoration.

After going through this layer, you'll find amethyst blocks and crystals. You'll only be able to mine amethyst blocks, buds, clusters, and crystals with pickaxes. Amethyst blocks can only be mined with pickaxes made from iron or harder materials. You can also combine four amethyst shards together to recreate an amethyst block.

Warzone Hackers Scream SkinCall of Duty: Warzone Season Six is here and it has introduced a range of new content such as new weapons, a battle pass, and more. As Halloween approaches, it is expected that there will be some spooky cosmetics on their way. Last year, skins such as Leatherface and Jigsaw were added to the in-game store as part of The Haunting. Since then, more crossovers have taken place with Rambo, McClane, and Judge Dredd. Recently, it was confirmed that Scream will be one of the skins coming to celebrate Halloween this year. However, it appears that hackers have already managed to get their hands on the Scream skin in Warzone. This is not the first time hackers have been able to use unreleased cosmetics. While fans were waiting for Zombies camos to be released into the battle royale, hackers found a way to use them before everyone else. Although hacking is an ongoing issue, getting early access to cosmetics such as the Scream skin is less frustrating than the likes of silent aim and wall hacks...

It seems the story of any big MMO is one where developers are always trying to keep up with players' antics, as many are happy to take advantage of broken systems to scam and frustrate others. New World's latest problem is one that combines lack of foresight, miscommunication, and good ol' fashioned automation.

New World's massive-scale PvP, war, is a mode where companies (clans) fight each other over territory. Naturally, most are willing to use every advantage they get to sabotage the other team, even if it means abusing helpful systems.

In this case, plenty of players are reporting that they got banned just ahead of a big battle. In some cases, half of an entire company has been banned in one go, making it much easier for the other team to win when they go up against much fewer opponents.

Launching today!

Gaming peripheral maker GameSir has today launched its latest controller for Switch, offering up a brand new pad for those looking for something on the smaller end of the scale.

The T4 Mini has been designed for players who find traditional modern controllers like the Switch's official Pro Controller a little too bulky for comfortable play. Featuring gyro controls, a two-setting turbo function, and all the buttons found on Nintendo's own controllers, the T4 Mini measures 14.3cm by 8.3cm and weighs 156g.

     Here's the Dota 2 International 10 schedule

The biggest event in the Dota 2 esports calendar, The International 10, is getting into full swing. The tournament's group stage is done and the main event is due to kick off very soon, starting on October 12 and running until October 17. Now that the 16 teams have been set, and the seedings have been selected, we've got an idea of how the schedule for The International 10 is shaping up.

This year's International is taking place in Bucharest, Romania, and marks an exciting return for the MOBA game's community as the 2020 contest was cancelled due to the pandemic. It now won't have a live audience, but Valve has outlined all the ways fans can tune in remotely, with some new and improved features introduced this year, such as a cheering tool to let your favourite teams know you're rooting for them from afar.

The 16 teams through to the main event are competing for the Aegis of Champions trophy, as well an eye-watering prize pool of over $40 million, which is the biggest in the history of esports.

Genshin Impact 2.2 release time – countdown to Childe banner

Genshin Impact's next update is just around the corner. Mihoyo has laid out some helpful information to guide you through the new content, such as when maintenance will start and what events and banners you can expect to come your way in the first half of the update cycle.

Mihoyo explains in a post on its website that maintenance for the update will begin at the usual time of 6am UTC+8 on October 13, which translates to 3pm PST / 6pm EST / 11pm BST on October 12. Maintenance is estimated to take five hours, so the Genshin Impact 2.2 update release time should be around 8pm PST / 11pm EST on October 12, and 4am BST October 13.

It's worth keeping in mind that the estimate isn't set in stone, so times may vary. On the bright side, you're getting maintenance compensation to the tune of 300 Primogems, which is about 60 gems for each hour the servers are down. There isn't any change to payment if Mihoyo completes the update earlier, either.

Skyrim modder gives Falkreath its own identity with a gorgeous building overhaul

Cities of the North is a modding project by Skyrim fan JPSteel2 that looks to give some of the fantasy game's minor cities a bit of an overhaul, and enhance their own strong visual identities. The latest addition to this project is a mod that reworks the forested, southern Skyrim hold city of Falkreath, with new building models, interiors, and more.

Even at a quick glance it's easy to see how much of a difference JPSteel2's Cities of the North - Falkreath mod makes to the southern hold's capital. While the base game's settlement has a look that's familiar from across Skyrim, with straw-roofed, timber dwellings scattered about - visually very similar to spots like Riverwood - the modded version gives it more its own distinct feel, with the addition of "new, unique model[s] for every building in Falkreath". The result is gorgeous - the city's structures and homes are turned from timber into stonework, with sloped, layered wooden roofs, gnarly beams that look like they've just been hewn from the forest all around, and embellishments with the hold's symbol of a deer.

It looks like the jarl's longhouse has been given a particularly impressive new look in the style of a medieval Scandinavian building of importance. It's stacked high with wood and stone and looks the part as the settlement's most imposing building - though still harmonious with its forest location.

The best weapons in New World for PvP and PvE

Looking for the best New World weapons? Amazon's new MMO game eschews the usual class system and gives players the ability to wield any of the game's eleven weapons freely. As you use a weapon, you gain mastery points in it, which you use to unlock skills and buffs in either of the weapon's two talent trees. You can choose up to three weapon skills that become available to you when that weapon is equipped, and you have two weapon slots, which you can switch between easily during combat without messing around in menus.

Though you can switch weapons at any point, it pays to choose two to specialise in and invest points into - especially as the skills at the end of each weapon's talent trees are particularly powerful. Each weapon scales off a specific primary attribute, and some of them also scale off a second attribute. As you level and gain attribute points, it's important to assign points to suit your chosen loadout.

When deciding which weapons to pick, it's definitely beneficial if both your weapons scale with the same attributes, although there are ways to get around this - for example, amber gems convert a percentage of your weapon's damage to nature damage, which scales off Focus. This means if you want to build high Focus for your Life Staff, you can still benefit from that investment when it comes to dealing damage with your other weapon.

You know, I was pretty disappointed that this weekend's Battlefield 2042 beta didn't have wingsuits. It's been one of the main things I'm looking forward to, leaping from buildings and gliding at unsuspecting foes, so it was sad that we didn't get to try it out. However, as I played, I realised that some players didn't seem to need wingsuits to get themselves off of the ground: they simply needed to die in a janky vehicle accident instead.

How can you upgrade tools in New World? Tools and weapons in New World can come in various different qualities, as reflected by their tier. Technically in this game you don't upgrade your tools — in as much as you don't use a lower-tier item as a base for a higher-tier upgrade. But there are ways of ensuring you craft a higher-tier tool, and you can do that regardless of whether you have a lower-tier version in hand or not; so in effect this system works more or less like tool upgrades in other games, but with a step removed.

BookoftravelsMy character awoke in the middle of a wide field in the dead of night. No light, save for the stars shining overhead, graced my presence. No glowing exclamation point urged me forward and no wild animals nipped at my heels. Book of Travels is an MMORPG, but not of the sort we're all familiar with. While I'm not entirely sold on it, I'm impressed by the art and the dedication to an idea that feels as foreign as it sounds. While much of it is built on recognizable frameworks, the end result is something that I simply haven't seen before. Book of Travels begins with you creating a character from a set of forms. These are archetypes, each with their pre-set looks. Your character doesn't have a filled-in backstory either. If you want one, you have to write it yourself. After settling on a form, you pick a name. Yes, pick. You don't appear to be able to create your own name from scratch and must randomly generate your first and last names separately, al...

Next Fest FallThe Fall Steam Next Fest has come and gone. I honestly nearly missed it, had it not been for our editor-in-chief pointing out. Upon discovering the treasure trove of simulator demos, I scrambled to download over a dozen of them on Steam, spending the course of two days sampling each one. Much like my experience with this year's summertime Next Fest, I'm walking away from this one with a rotund wishlist and childlike eagerness to see more demos crop up, because the selection here was nothing short of ace. I managed to find five standout simulators in this Fall lineup from the Steam Next Fest demos selection. While I can't say there's one that's completely superior to the other, I can say that they each stand out for unique reasons. Either way, they're all certainly worth checking out properly once they're fully released.   Airport Renovator – A pilot's playground Flight simulator titles are a dime-a-dozen out there. With maps that advance and grow as you play through allowing you to place down more towers and change your tactics, Warstone TD from Battlecruiser Games is now available natively on Linux. The developer said that they're providing a Linux version now as "a lot people asked for it".

One feature that makes it quite interesting is how you place your towers. Initially you're not given a lot of stones to place defence down but more can appear as the level goes on and from defeating enemies, so eventually you get a lot more space to place your towers. There's also a class system to give you new abilities, plus the mission types are varied too that enables you to use other unit types. Quite a lot to like about this one and since release in 2018 it seems to have reviewed well from users on Steam.

Not too long after the initial Early Access release that was back in August, GrapeOcean Technologies has released a Linux version of their party-based RPG Black Geyser: Couriers of Darkness.

Inspired clearly by Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, the team are hoping to make their mark with challenging real time tactical combat with pause, deep lore and memorable companions, all set in a sprawling, unique fantasy world.

"As a small team, we wanted to create a unique world that had a different tone, but one filled with everything we've come to expect from a cRPG: an epic story, exploration, mystery and plenty of side quests," says David Zakal, Director and Founder of GrapeOcean Technologies.

Game Features:

  • A huge world map with 2 countries (Isilmerald and Northern Realm), dozens of districts, settlements, villages and towns.
  • 5 playable races (Human, Dwarf, Elf, Feldegug and Rillow).
  • 13 unique classes from 4 class archetypes (Priest, Outlaw, Warrior, and Wizard).
  • Over 300,000 words of hand-crafted dialogue.
  • Traditional real-time tactical combat with pause.
  • An abundance of spells to wield and crafting to undertake, all combined with deep character progression.
  • Character actions impact greed, which directly affects the world around you.
  • An original world filled with diverse characters, creatures and biomes.
  • Fully voice-acted lead characters.

Nice to see another game funded via Kickstarter keep to their plan with Linux support. Another one to tick off our big list of crowdfunded titles. It has only just started off life and the developer mentions their plan to keep it in Early Access until at least Q1 2022.

You can buy it on GOG and Steam.

Heroic Games Launcher has a fresh update released and it comes with some mighty fine new features, all in the name of making your Epic Store library easier to manage on Linux. All still unofficial of course, since the store doesn't support Linux directly.

With HGL version 1.10.1 it can now install parts of games that offer a selective download, you can run games using an "alternative" executable, available DLC will be listed along with a toggle to bring them all or not and you can actually check the download / install size before installing games now.

For Linux (and macOS) the launcher can now use Wine bottles made with CodeWeavers' CrossOver, there's a new option to enable / disable Esync/Fsync along with various tech upgrades behind the scenes and a good few bug fixes too.

Hopefully one day Epic will decide to actually bring their store to Linux, until then Heroic seems to do the job quite nicely.

Check it out on GitHub.
