Fortnite Chapter 3's leaked trailer reveals Spider-Man and Gears of War collabs

Fortnite Chapter 3 launches in just a few days and now we have a good idea of what it'll look like. A leaked Fortnite Chapter 3 Battle Pass trailer has hit the internet, revealing some major map changes, modes, skins - and at least two major crossovers for Marvel's Spider-Man and Gears of War.

The whole of the year-long Fortnite Chapter 2 comes to a crashing conclusion tonight with a big ending event cunningly titled "The End", after which Epic Games will presumably debut the first details and trailer for Chapter 3 - which launches on December 6.

Despite Epic asking the community not to leak any Chapter 3 info - and then proceeding to accidentally leak part of the trailer itself in a TikTok ad - the full Battle Pass trailer for Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 1 has completely leaked online ahead of The End event. The trailer reveals massive changes coming to the game, including a completely revised map, new locations, new skins, a racecourse, a giant statue of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's character The Foundation, and at least two major collabs.

A side effect of fatherhood is that I now see everything through my five-year-old's eyes. Hot Wheels Unleashed is, to me, most likely a middling racing game and lesser Trackmania - but then, if I think about it, I know my kid would love it.

Hot Wheels Unleashed's Batman expansion, featuring a handful of cars and a Batcave? To me, meaningless licensed tie-in. But my kid... My kid must never know this exists.

It feels at times as if, over a long enough timeline, all first-person shooters trend towards becoming the same game by cribbing modes from one another. Case in point: Quake now has a horde mode. It comes as part of a new update for Quake Remastered, Bethesda's recent spit-and-polish of the classic 3D shooter. The horde mode is made by MachineGames for 1-4 players - and the update also includes a new (or "new") singleplayer add-on.

Dragon Age 4 is definitely a

It's been three years since the announcement of Dragon Age 4 and we still haven't had much more than rumours about BioWare's next title - even details on what type of game it'll be. While it was previously believed to have multiplayer or be live-service like Anthem, BioWare has finally confirmed what all fans wanted to hear - Dragon Age 4 will definitely be an entirely single-player game.

Much like BioWare, Dragon Age 4 has gone through a lot of changes in its lifespan. While it previously seemed to be a more online-focused game in the style of Anthem, in February this year it was reported that EA and BioWare had killed all form of multiplayer from the new Dragon Age and made it purely single-player again.

It's now December 4, otherwise known as Dragon Age Day, and the team at BioWare has finally confirmed that Dragon Age 4 - or whatever it'll be called - will indeed be a "single-player focused experience" and that they're "still hard at work on building [it]".

BioShock 4 may be taking notes from Half-Life 3

A number of possible BioShock 4 details may have been leaked. If the rumours are accurate, we may now know the proposed time period, setting, and even the city name of the new BioShock - and some of these details might sound a little familiar to Half-Life 3 followers.

These rumours come from podcaster and game journalist Colin Moriarty on the latest episode of his Sacred Symbols PlayStation podcast. Reportedly the Cloud Chamber-developed BioShock 4 is targeting a 2022 release, is internally codenamed "Parkside" - which has been rumoured previously - and "the development team has incredible latitude to get it right", according to Moriarty.

While all this is rumour until announced, sources at VGC and Eurogamer support Moriarty's findings. The game will supposedly take place in the 1960s - the same time period as the original BioShock. It's the setting, however, that might resonate with Half-Life 3 devotees - as BioShock 4's version of Rapture or Columbia may be an "Antarctic city called Borealis".

Halo Infinite has an absurd desync problem which devs will

Since the surprise early beta release of Halo Infinite's multiplayer last month, it's clearly been incredibly popular but hasn't been without problems. Now, one player has managed to record a truly incredible case of desync which may be causing hit registration issues - and developer 343 Industries has now confirmed it will "look into" the problem.

Since the launch of Halo Infinite multiplayer on November 15, players have frequently reported odd hit detection issues - especially on PC - that have prevented them from getting kills or progressing normally. The issue certainly seems to be desynchronisation and server lag, but with the game's full release coming in just a few days the situation doesn't seem to have improved.

This week, Reddit user TonySoprano3000 recorded the best example yet of this desync issue, which is presumably the reason for all the hit registration problems. The video shows the player's point of view - or client-side - on the left along with what is actually happening server-side on the right, so what other players see.

FFXIV has smashed its all-time Steam player record and doubled it in six months

The early access release of Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker has seemingly pushed the venerable MMO to new heights, as the game's all-time concurrent player record on Steam has been smashed for the second time this year - and the new count is more than double FFXIV's previous peak from June this year.

Despite being out for over ten years now, or eight as A Realm Reborn,  Final Fantasy XIV has continued to go from strength to strength in 2021 alone. The MMO reported over 22 million registered players back in April and has repeatedly broken its concurrent player count record this year.

According to SteamDB, the new concurrent player count for Final Fantasy XIV today is 87,831 - beating the previous record of 67,148 on July 18. By the end of June, the peak was still around 41K, meaning the MMO has more than doubled its concurrent players in just under six months - and added over 20,000 players to its previous record. On December 2, the player count was 40,232.

I'm going to try to keep these guides relatively spoiler-free as we go on, but obviously that's not the easiest thing to do. In this guide at least, you'll read about the dungeon name, the boss names (and their attacks), and see a bunch of screenshots. Nothing more, nothing less.   And that's probably for the best, because there's quite a lot else to talk about. While the Tower of Zot is the first dungeon and it seems to have been tuned down a bit since the press event, it̵...

What if: Fallout 5 is set before the bombs dropped?

Todd Howard has a "one-pager" for Fallout 5. Perhaps Bethesda Game Studios is working on bringing that initial design doc to life, or maybe it handed development over to another studio as it did to Obsidian for Fallout: New Vegas. Either way, the developers probably have some clue as to what it's going to be about. And we don't.

That gives us a golden opportunity to put forth an idea that will horrify you: the idea of a Fallout 5 set in the world before the bombs drop. The snatches of Fallout's pre-war world were always its most gripping narrative element. The very first thing the original CRPG shows you is a world clinging onto the visual language and cheery public service broadcasts of our real-world post-war America, despite having been bombed to a fine paste. How and why did that culture form?

In that first RPG, and indeed all its sequels, an alt-history timeline plots depleting resources and superpowers squabbling over the scraps, leading of course to a giant nuclear war that leaves the world irreparably brown. So what was life like during those years, from the 2050s to the 2070s?

The classic GTA Trilogy is back but only for

December 4, 2021: The original GTA Trilogy is back, but only on Rockstar's launcher for people who own the Definitive Edition.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition is out, and while I hate to put too many qualitative statements about a game here in a news story, there's no way around it. It's bad. Rockstar previously provided an update on the "unexpected technical issues" plaguing the remastered open-world games and promised patches are coming and the originals getting relisted.

One of those has happened, at least, although not in the way everyone would like. The original versions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas are now available for free for anyone who purchased the new Trilogy - or plans to pick it up before July 1, 2022. However, there is no word on when the classic trilogy will be relisted on the Rockstar launcher to buy as a separate bundle as the developer promised - or whether the games will come back to Steam or any other PC storefronts after they were pulled in October.

Destroy-anything indie game Teardown now has a complete campaign

Teardown was a hit with the community before it even launched, thanks to a series of Twitter videos showcasing the game's impressive freeform destruction. The game hit Steam Early Access just over a year ago, and it's still not quite ready for 1.0 - but there's a whole lot more of it to enjoy now, as the devs have completed the campaign.

This week's 0.9 release introduces the second half of the campaign. "For the past year, we have worked hard to bring you the completion of the Teardown campaign," the devs explain in the announcement. "And we are pleased to bring you an update packed to the brim with exciting stuff. New locations, new mission types, new tools, new characters, robots (!), and a whole lot of mayhem!"

From here, the devs are set to "dive into the final stretch leading to the 1.0 release". If you want to check out the expanded campaign and dive in before that final launch, the game is currently 20% off, bringing the price down to $15.99 / £14.79 / €15.99.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla adds Basim's sword, but you need to play this week to get it

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is in a bit of a holding pattern right now, as the next bit of DLC is still somewhere over the horizon. However, the devs still have some stuff in mind to keep you occupied until then - like new swords. Another community challenge event is now underway, and if the goal is met (it will be) everyone who participates will get a shiny new sword.

More specifically, you'll get Basim's sword, a stylish one-handed weapon modeled after the one wielded by the proto-assassin. To get it, you need to get a kill with any one-handed sword - the weapon will be unlocked once the community reaches 250,000 one-handed sword kills, and with many days left on the challenge, that's already nearly complete.

The Oskoreia Festival has also been extended to December 9 so that "all players are able to fully enjoy" it. The spooky festival was originally scheduled to conclude on December 2, and still feels like a slightly-late effort at a Halloween celebration. But hey, if you're mad that the calendar has left Halloween behind in favour of Christmas season, Valhalla is keeping the spirits up.

Half-Life: Blue Shift mod for Black Mesa now includes three playable chapters

Now you can play the first three chapters of Half-Life: Blue Shift, rebuilt in the spiffy new version of the Source Engine used in Black Mesa. The modding group behind the Blue Shift mod, HECU Collective, continues to publish new chapters of the Half-Life spin-off FPS game, which tells the story of a Black Mesa Research Facility security guard on the day of Gordon Freeman's fateful misadventure.

The first playable chunk of the mod arrived back in March, and it only included a brief introduction to Blue Shift. Now you can play Living Quarters Outbound, Insecurity, and Duty Calls, including all the taut combat sequences and environmental puzzles featured in the original game.

The most recent version of Black Mesa: Blue Shift also adds in some fixes for chapter two, new character animations, and some maintenance workers - all of whom, like protagonist Barney Calhoun, are having an extremely bad day. Duty Calls is where events in Blue Shift really pop off, and it begins in the wreckage of an elevator shaft, where Barney wakes up after Freeman sets off the resonance cascade, filling the facility with ravenous alien monsters.

This isn't a trick to the level you'd see in The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe; the story-based games comprised of choices and decisions has a new release date of early 2022.
