FFXIV Endwalker Raid release time – Pandaemonium and v6.01 drops soon

The first raid for Final Fantasy XIV's new Endwalker expansion is coming this week along with update 6.01. Fans will have to survive eight hours of the MMO being offline for maintenance but when it's back up they'll be able to try out Pandaemonium at last.

The first Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker raid release time is December 21 at 2:00 AM PST / 5:00 AM EST / 10:00 AM GMT / 7 PM JST, which is the same time as update 6.01 drops. Before that, the game will be offline for a full eight hours of maintenance - not that many will notice, that's about average for queue times since the Endwalker expansion launched.

As previously confirmed in the last roadmap, when the 6.01 patch drops on Tuesday it'll give access to the first high-end raid for the Endwalker expansion - Pandaemonium, or specifically the normal difficulty of the raid's first tier, Pandaemonium: Asphodelos. Two weeks from then on January 4, 2022, the Savage difficulty will drop with version 6.05.

George R. R. Martin says Elden Ring

After many years of teases, rumours, and waiting, From Software's latest action-RPG Elden Ring is nearly here. With just two months to go, Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin - who helped shape the game's world - has given his impression of Elden Ring, although he admits he's more of a strategy game fan.

Elden Ring has long been confirmed as a collaboration between From Software, Dark Souls mastermind Hidetaka Miyazaki, and A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin. Earlier this year, Martin revealed that although he had a hand in the characters and world-building, his work on Elden Ring was completed "years ago".

Back in 2019, George R. R. Martin accidentally revealed the existence of Elden Ring on his blog. In his latest blog post, however, Martin adds a bit of history to his association with From Software - saying that the team wanted him to help create "a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game they planned to create". "I love creating worlds and writing imaginary history," he adds.

Epic's free game today is one of the best detective games on PC

The Epic Games Store holiday celebration is in full swing and users are once again getting treated to a daily free game, and today's title is The Vanishing of Ethan Carter - one of the best "walking sim" exploration games around, which is also making its debut on Epic's store.

Yesterday Epic users were treated to a copy of one of the best Soulslikes of the last few years, Remnant: From The Ashes, so hopefully everyone who wanted that picked that up because the 24 hours are up and a new game is available now - and it's still one of the best detective/exploration games on PC, not to mention a gorgeous one. Head here to grab it, just make sure to do so within the next 24 hours.

The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was released all the way back in 2014 on Steam before the Epic Games Store was even a thing. Our reviewer enjoyed it but said that it wasn't without issues, so it's lucky that developer The Astronauts released an Unreal Engine 4-powered Redux edition a year later.

This Doom mod lets you photo NFTs for money

It's probably safe to say that most people who aren't Ubisoft are not fond of NFTs. The good news is that modders have the perfect way of dealing with any NFT frustrations - by shooting them in Doom and earning as much money as possible doing so.

NFTs are all the rage these days, and it's mostly rage directed against them. The Game Awards outright banned them along with discussion about them, and Valve has put the hammer down about having them on Steam along with any "applications built on blockchain technology". In the shooter space, any plans for STALKER 2 to have NFTs have been cancelled - but Ubisoft is still barrelling ahead with them into Ghost Recon Breakpoint.

Players need an outlet to express their rage, and as usual, Doom is the perfect place. The first version of the Doom NFT mod by Ultra Boi is out now on ModDB and it replaces all the enemies in the game with various different types of bored NFT monkey art.

Psychonauts 2 studio has begun work on multiple

After creating one of the best games of the year, Psychonauts 2 developer Double Fine Productions has now shifted its focus to the future - and is apparently "splitting up into various teams" to work on multiple "new projects", although there's a possibility none of them are Psychonauts 3.

Psychonauts 2 is one of the top games of 2021. Our reviewer called it "Double Fine's best game" and "rich and rewarding", and most critics seem to agree. With the renewed accolade and the support from Microsoft and Xbox, who now own Double Fine, all eyes are on what the studio is up to next.

In a recent Fig update for Psychonauts 2's backers, Double Fine confirms there will still be "tweaks and fixes" for Psychonauts 2 but the studio has now moved on to its next game - or rather, multiple games plural, as the update says that "the studio is already splitting up into various teams and starting different projects that we think you'll enjoy".

Stranger of Paradise shows off its remake of Final Fantasy 1's iconic intro

On a stream yesterday to celebrate the birthday of the Final Fantasy series, upcoming action-RPG Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin had a few minutes of new gameplay shown off - as well as the game's opening cutscene, which features a dramatic recreation of Final Fantasy I's iconic beginning.

Yesterday marked the 34th anniversary of the original Japanese release of Final Fantasy I on the NES - and the entire Final Fantasy series - so to celebrate Square Enix Japan held a two-hour long stream where they discussed the beginnings of the franchise and how Final Fantasy I connects to the upcoming sort-of sequel/remake Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

This included how enemies and locations from Final Fantasy I were being recreated in 3D, but also the game's full opening cutscene - complete with its epic recreation of the intro to Final Fantasy I, where the four warriors of light cross the bridge out of Cornelia and stare out at the castle in the distance. Cornelia Castle is a lot bigger and more imposing in the new version.
