AMD Ryzen 7000 Zen 4 CPUs arrive later this year, with a puzzling heatsink design

CES 2022 is upon us, and technology companies from around the world are showing off their gadgets, gizmos, and expensive gaming PC components. While Intel chose to revisit its existing Alder Lake lineup with some new entries, AMD finally unveiled its next-gen gaming CPU contender – Zen 4.

Unveiled during AMD's Product Premiere event by CEO Lisa Su, the upcoming Ryzen 7000 series processors feature a striking heatsink that resembles a jigsaw piece. The processor also uses an LGA AM5 socket, meaning it'll connect to your gaming motherboard with pads rather than pins.

While AMD provided us with a glimpse at its redesigned CPU Heatsink aesthetics and sockets, it held back in terms of specs. However, just like the red team's upcoming Zen 3+ mobile CPUs, Zen 4 will boast DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 support. Lisa Su also claims that the Ryzen 7000's "performance looks incredible", but we can decide if that holds true once the chips arrive in Spring 2022.

New World server transfers have been temporarily disabled

A recently discovered bug in Amazon Games' new MMORPG New World has led to the developers disabling world transfers for the time being. The studio says the "recently discovered issue" has been "exacerbated" by the transfer feature, which will be re-enabled once a fix is deployed.

New World community manager Luxendra posted a brief message in the New World forums that alerted New World players to the fact that world transfers had been temporarily disabled due to the bug. "This only affects players that have an existing server transfer token," Luxendra wrote. "We will provide an update once we have re-enabled the feature."

Luxendra doesn't provide any specifics about the issue at fault, only that the world transfer feature somehow makes it worse. New World conducted a big server merge December 20-21, combining players on many of its less-played worlds. You can see the updated list of servers, with both the new live server and the servers that merged into them, in our handy dandy New World server merge guide.

After Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot sells nearly 5 million, the devs tease their next game

CyberConnect2 has developed a reputation as perhaps the most reliable developer of anime games out there. Sure, games like Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot or Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba - The Hinokami Chronicles aren't redefining the industry, but they are setting a much higher bar than we've been used to for licensed adaptations. In a New Year's stream, CyberConnect2 has announced some impressive sales milestones, and has begun teasing its next project.

President and CEO Hiroshi Matsuyama says CyberConnect 2's next game will be announced in February and released in the summer, according to a translation from Gematsu. Matsuyama suggests that "the new title to be announced will definitely get people talking, and promises to be something that will shake the world".

There's no indication just yet of what this new game will be, or even if it will be licensed at all. The new Bleach anime coming this year has some fans hopeful for a tie-in there. Matsuyama is also teasing a mysterious celebration of the 20th anniversary of .hack in June, though that may not be connected to the new game. CyberConnect2 has also been branching out into original IP with games like Fuga: Melodies of Steel.

Intel releases more Alder Lake gaming CPUs, with cheaper chipsets coming soon

Intel's Alder Lake desktop processors marked a turning point for the company, putting its Core CPUs on par with the latest from AMD Ryzen. Now, three months on from 12th gen's October release, more budget friendly chips and chipsets are on the way from Intel, featuring lower power consumption and included air coolers.

While there are several high performance processors that have been announced today, such as the Core i9-12900 and i7-12700, Intel has surprisingly cut efficiency cores entirely from all chips below and including the i5-12600. This marks the first time Alder Lake CPUs won't feature Intel's heterogeneous design of discrete performance and efficiency cores, and will instead return to the homogeneous core design seen prior to Alder Lake.

It's likely that this decision was made as a cost cutting measure, with the i5-12600 priced at just $223 USD versus the i5-12600K's $289 USD, undercutting it by $66. If the loss of efficiency cores doesn't make a massive difference in terms of gaming performance, it could be an easy sacrifice to stomach.

Death Stranding Director's Cut officially hits Steam and Epic this spring

Death Stranding got an excellent PC port in 2020, so it was disappointing to see the updated Director's Cut version launch exclusively on PlayStation 5 last year. A number of leaks this week suggested that a PC port for the new content would simply be a matter of time, and publisher 505 Games has now confirmed that the Director's Cut is coming to home computers.

The new Steam listing for the Director's Cut is entirely separate from the original game, so it's not just DLC. It's unclear whether there'll be an upgrade path for owners of the original version on PC, though 505 says more info is coming "at the end of January". On PlayStation 5, owners of the original Death Stranding were able to upgrade to the Director's Cut for $10 / €10.

The game will launch simultaneously across Steam and the Epic Games Store this spring. It will include all the PC-focused improvements the original release of Death Stranding boasted, like high frame rate and ultrawide monitor support, and include Intel's XeSS upscaling tech.

Intel brings Alder Lake to gaming laptops with its 12th gen Core H-series processors

AMD threw down the gauntlet to Intel earlier today with the announcement of its Ryzen 6000 APUs at CES 2022, but team blue has quickly responded with news of its 12th Gen Core H-series mobile processors. Based on the same Intel 7 process as their desktop equivalents, these new Alder Lake chips should come to the best gaming laptops later this year.

The Core i9-12900HK is the most powerful of the eight H-series CPUs, which Intel claims to be "the fastest mobile processor ever" with up 40% increased performance. While this kind of assertion should always be taken with a grain of salt, it's worth noting that Intel made this claim in relation to its own 11th gen processors and AMD's Ryzen 5000 flagships rather than the newly revealed Ryzen 6000.

In terms of specifications, the i9-12900HK uses the same heterogeneous design as its desktop siblings. It boasts six performance cores and eight efficiency cores, for a total of 14 cores and 20 threads, and has a max turbo frequency of 5GHz. With a base power consumption of 45W, the i9 could easily be one of the best gaming CPUs in terms of performance and efficiency that you'll find in any laptop. There's also an i9-12900H that has the same specifications as its HK sibling but lacks overclocking abilities.

FFXIV gets butt-buffing pants and dance poles

Final Fantasy XIV's latest update has landed, and the 6.05 patch notes introduce a selection of job changes alongside new content like the Savage Pandaemonium raid. But there are a few, erm, unadvertised additions in 6.05, too, including pants that make your butt more shapely and a pole. Like, you know, the kind of pole you dance on.

The patch notes do say that "new prizes are available for purchase using MGP", but it's actually just one item: the dance pole, a furnishing item. As the description notes, "even seasoned adventurers may find that sensually swivelling upon this pole proves a challenge to their balance and brawn alike". Sadly, it seems you can't actually interact with the pole, but I guess you can always do a /beesknees near it.

Then there are the hose of happiness, a new craftable set of pants that add a bit of volume to your character's butt. There are a number of clothing items in FFXIV that make subtle adjustments to your character model, but it's especially pronounced here - the effect is basically the same as the 2B leggings, just without requiring you to run around in a thong. And, fabulously, it appears the butt buff applies to male characters, too.

Diplomacy is Not an Option is a city builder about trebuchets over tact, out this month

Sure, diplomacy is a key in a whole lot of strategy games, but it's not always the best option, is it? A new city-building game coming to Steam later this month in Early Access certainly doesn't think so. Aptly titled Diplomacy is Not an Option, the new indie game puts you in the boots of a "long-suffering minor lord" who's faced with invading hordes of angry folk and lacking in options, so it's going to be a trebuchets-over-tact kind of affair.

"Experience warfare on an entirely new scale as over ten THOUSAND enemy units assault your castle walls," the game's developer Door 407 explains on its Steam page, meanwhile asking a crucial question: Do you have what it takes to save the kingdom?" Oh, also: "Is the kingdom even worth saving?" Erm.

It turns out that's for you to determine. Diplomacy is Not an Option features a bunch of city builder genre mechanics that you'll need to keep on top of, such as food scarcity (which can cause soldiers to starve on the battlefield), disease management (plague is afoot), and the need to protect homes. There's an economy you'll need to keep afloat with stores of food, wood, stone, iron, and gold, and you'll have to manage resources carefully to keep your folks alive and city defended. Naturally, though, the big facet you won't be able to rely on is the ability to talk your way out of trouble or grease the palms of those that might invade you, which means combat's a biggie.

AMD's Radeon Super Sampling will bring upscaling to almost every game

Upscaling tools are a lifesaver when attempting to boost fps, helping strike a balance between performance and visuals. While Nvidia DLSS often overshadows FidelityFX, it's not inherently compatible with your entire gaming PC library, meaning you could struggle to run the latest games at either 4K, or on ageing rigs. Thankfully, AMD just announced Radeon Super Resolution, a new upscaler that should work with just about any game.

Unveiled during CES 2022, AMD's RSR works within the company's new Adrenaline software, meaning that it'll likely be RDNA GPU exclusive feature. The driver-based AI also functions differently from FSR, it works its upscaling magic after rendering occurs.

While RSR probably won't replace FSR outright, the Radeon feature will help AMD take on both Nvidia DLSS and Intel's XeSS, a scaler that's set to be included with the company's upcoming Arc Alchemist graphics cards.

A bunch of Paradox strategy games are going cheap on Steam right now

Update - January 4, 2022: Now's your last chance to check out the games going cheap in the Steam winter sale

The 2021 Steam winter sale is in full swing, and that means a ton of the biggest and best PC games going for cheap right now. While there's obviously a whole lot of discounted stuff to check out across a bunch of different genres, one slice of the sale is offering some decent deals on various Paradox strategy games, including bundles aimed at helping bring new players aboard.

The Paradox winter sale has up to 75% off some of the studio's various games, with that full three-quarters discount currently available on city-building simulation game Cities: Skylines, military strategy game Hearts of Iron IV, sci-fi adventure Stellaris, and historical grand strategy game Europa Universalis IV. Crusader Kings III discounted by less, but still 20% off, bringing it down to £33.59 / $39.99, in case you've got that on your wishlist.

Elsewhere there are several starter packs going for cheap, which should prove handy if you've got your eye on any of these but are yet to dive in. The Cities: Skylines new player bundle has the base game plus three key DLC packs - Mass Transit, Industries, and Sunset Harbor - for 64% off.

Rainbow Six Extraction release date – everything you need to know

Want to know when the Rainbow Six Extraction release date is? Previously known as Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Quarantine, Ubisoft puts cooperative play first in this PvE shooter. In teams of three, Extraction pits players against a deadly parasite that takes the form of a sticky black mould. This parasite is known as the Sprawl - if left unchecked, it can infect and kill humans.

Extraction borrows a number of core elements from Rainbow Six Siege, including the operators Ela and Vigil, who appeared in the first trailer back in 2019. The gameplay should feel familiar to anyone who has dabbled in Siege's multiplayer, and we fully expect to see more Rainbow Six Siege operators become part of the game.

When describing the game for the first time, Ubisoft made it clear that you don't have to be a Siege player to enjoy Extraction. This game may be a good way for new players to get to grips with a few of Siege's mechanics, as players will use some of the same weapons, gadgets, and operators. Here's everything we know about Rainbow Six Extraction so far.

Eve Online's next event features a battle with Doctor Who's Daleks

Venerable space MMORPG Eve Online is joining forces with the longest-running sci-fi TV programme of all time, Doctor Who, in a limited-time event that's set to kick off later this month. The Interstellar Convergence, as it's called, will challenge Eve players to track down and eventually do battle with the Doctor's most iconic enemy, the extermination-obsessed Daleks.

The Interstellar Convergence will run January 13 - February 1, during which you'll be able to travel through a wormhole to a new area of space, where you'll pick up on a trail of clues. CCP Games says you'll have a "beguiling mystery" to solve, an array of challenges to complete, and plenty of new Doctor Who-themed items to earn in the process.

Blending worlds like this is standard fare for Doctor Who, which can explain just about any jump in theme or setting simply by invoking the concept of the multiverse. For its part, Eve Online already makes use of "time dilation" to explain why everything slows down to 'bullet time' during major fleet battles.

Demon's Souls remake created extra pressure for Elden Ring's graphics team

One of the many standout features of Bluepoint Games' Demon's Souls remake for the PlayStation 5 is the graphics' quality, which certainly hasn't gone unnoticed by the original developers at FromSoftware. In fact, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that the graphics team "felt that pressure more than anyone else" when quizzed if Demon's Souls graphical fidelity raised the bar for the devs.

"And not just with Elden Ring, but with all the games we make," Miyazaki tells Edge Magazine (thanks, VGC). "Graphical fidelity is not something we put as the top priority. What we ask for on the graphics side depends on the systems and requirements of the game itself, and it takes less priority compared to the other elements of development."

Miyazaki goes on to say that graphical fidelity is "always" an area where he feels "a little bit apologetic" towards the graphics team because of how hard the devs work. "They've worked extremely hard on Elden Ring," he says. "Our graphics-systems team and our programmers have been pushing a lot of new features to create the best-looking games we've ever made."

AMD's new Zen 3+ Ryzen 6000 mobile APUs support DDR5 RAM and USB4

Intel is already creating waves with its Alder Lake lineup, and the company is reportedly cooking up an i7 laptop chip that's 25% faster than AMD's current offering. However, it looks like the red team is gearing up to defend its mobile CPU crown, as it just announced 20 new Ryzen Zen 3+ mobile CPUs at CES 2022.

Featuring 12 GPU Compute Units clocked at 2.4GHz, AMD's Rembrandt offering consists of eight Ryzen 6000H series CPUs and two 6000U SKUs. The company's entry-level Ryzen 7 6800U and Ryzen 5 6600U chips come with a 15-25W TDP, while its Ryzen 9 6980HX flagship wields boost clock speeds up to 5Ghz.

The new Rembrandt APU range also boasts USB4, PCIe Gen 4, DDR5 RAM support, and RDNA2 graphics, meaning AMD's gaming laptop lineup is now equipped to take on Intel's Alder Lake. The Zen 3+ mobile APU will also be the first to support hardware ray tracing, and FSR compatibility will boost fps in upcoming games.

The best Akimbo pistols in Warzone Pacific Season 1

Searching for the best Warzone Pacific pistols to use with the Akimbo perk? You probably won't find any pistols in our best Warzone loadouts - we don't have anything against pistols, but the best SMGs in Warzone usually excel in the same role. If you want to try something completely different from the usual meta, the Akimbo perk gives you the damage output of an SMG without having to pick the Overkill perk every time.

Akimbo pistols are significantly better in Warzone Pacific due to the way Caldera has been designed. Verdansk featured a lot of open areas which made sniping extremely popular, whereas Caldera focuses on medium range combat primarily. As a result, you're more likely to run into an enemy at close range, the perfect distance for Akimbo pistols. If you can keep a steady hand, these pistol loadouts are capable of blasting your opponents away in seconds.

Call of Duty Vanguard doesn't have many viable Akimbo candidates, but we're sure more pistols are coming to the battle royale game over the coming seasons. We also have included the older pistols from the previous Call of Duty games in case you wanted to try out your old arsenal of guns.

Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Spelunky 2, more hit PC Game Pass this month

Microsoft has unveiled the next batch of games headed to Xbox Game Pass next, and the good news is all eight of the coming additions are hitting PC, not just console. The other good news is there are some real treats in the mix coming up soon.

In just a couple days' time, Mass Effect: Legendary Edition is coming to both PC Game Pass and the console version, Microsoft has revealed in a blog post. With this being one of the best RPGs around by our reckoning, it's an exciting addition to the Game Pass lineup, given it includes the single-player base games of Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, along with more than 40 pieces of DLC from across the three games. The Legendary Edition has been given some polish through remastering and optimisation for 4K Ultra HD, so Commander Shepard's adventures in space should look pretty, too.

On the same date, Mobius Digital's time-loop space adventure Outer Wilds is also joining Xbox Game Pass. The game puts you into the space-boots of a new space program recruit exploring the, well, outer wilds of the universe's strange and myersious reaches, all while stuck in a time loop you need to break free from. It was very warmly received by critics and winner of BAFTA's 2020 best game category, so well worth a whirl.

Genshin Impact Yun Jin release date and abilities

When is the Yun Jin banner release date? This long-rumoured character is finally coming to the anime game tomorrow, and we've got all the details on her abilities, banner, and more.

Yun Jin's name has popped up several times already in Genshin Impact. Back in January 2021, dataminer Lumie shared a render of the character on Twitter.  She has also appeared in the game, albeit scarcely. We caught a glimpse of her during a recent cutscene for the Moonchase Festival, and several existing characters mention her by name in their voice lines.

Mihoyo finally revealed Yun Jin in a tweet back in November 2021, and has since released a lot more information via a full character reveal, as well as a Yun Jin character demo. She's a four-star Geo polearm user, the director of the Yun-Han Opera Troupe, and a famous figure in Liyue Harbor's opera scene. She was originally unveiled alongside Shenhe, another polearm user with Geo abilities.

Samsung announces the Odyssey Neo G8, the world's first 4K 240Hz gaming monitor

4K gaming monitors have been around for a while now, but they've not been able to offer the same sky-high refresh rates as other lower resolution offerings. As a result, players previously had to choose whether to prioritise image quality or opt for a more responsive experience when buying a new display. However, Samsung hopes to marry the best of both worlds and has recently announced its plans to make the first 4K 240Hz gaming monitor: the Odyssey Neo G8.

The Samsung Odyssey Neo G8 comes with all the top of the line specifications you'd expect from the best gaming monitors, in addition to some other creature comforts. The G8 will feature a single DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.1 inputs, the latter of which will be your means of unlocking the monitor's 4K 240Hz potential. It should be noted, however, that you'll also need a GPU with HDMI 2.1 ports, such as Nvidia's RTX 3000 graphics cards.

As well as being both sharp and responsive, the G8 boasts a 32-inch Quantum Mini LED panel bolstered by a Quantum HDR 2000 certification, which means it should offer great contrast, deep black levels, and generally fantastic image quality.

Sex. It's all around us. It's leaking out of the walls. It's flooding up through the floorboards. "Where's all this sex coming from?" screams your mother, as she puts the sofa up on cinder blocks to protect it from the rising tide of sex. "Get all of the white goods up the stairs!"

Steam has existed in a grey area in China, technically not following rules which require all games be approved yet never drawing the ire of authorities. Many have long expected it to eventually be banned, though, especially after Valve partnered with Perfect World to launch the limited Steam China. This might now be happening. Maybe. Or it's possibly being hindered, at least. This all started with a big stink on Christmas Day that led some to declare Steam had been banned by the Great Firewall which restricts access to many sites outside China, but the reality is not so clear cut.

The vanguard of Intel's 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs had some seriously good chips in it – including two of the best CPUs for gaming overall – though there weren't many models for aspiring PC builders on tight budgets. Now, though, Intel has used CES 2022 to launch the rest of the 12th Gen desktop lineup, adding loads of more affordable Core i5 and Core i3 processors on top of new Core i7 and Core i9 options. Intel also unveiled its new H-series, 12th Gen gaming laptop chips, which use the same hybrid architecture (combining powerful P-cores with smaller, less energy-intensive E-cores) as their Alder Lake desktop cousins.

Before it pivoted to talking about self-driving cars, something I can't even put into a PCIe slot, Nvidia's CES 2022 showcase went both high and low with its graphics card reveals. The high: the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, as new top-of-the-line CPU with 24GB of upgraded, 21Gbit/s GDDR6X VRAM. The low: the GeForce RTX 3050, Nvidia's first XX50 GPU in a donkey's age.

It's the first week of 2022 and that means – yes! – all the big PC hardware movers and shakers are hosting their CES 2022 events. On the same day. Within a couple of hours of each other. But my stress is your gain, as there are and will be some major announcements on new kit, starting with AMD. Their freshly-announced hardware includes an assortment of new CPUs, desktop and mobile graphics cards and even some laptop APUs – APUs that sound a lot more useful for gaming that what current integrated graphics can offer. There's even an Nvidia Image Scaling rival in the upcoming, driver-level Radeon Super Resolution feature.

Christmas came and went, a fat goose is waddling around honking a muted honk, and people have put so many coins into the old man's hat that he gets a mild concussion every time he walks the dog. So, not to be crass, but did you get anything good? Rare new hardware? Handy stocking stuffers? A good game in the sales? Hell, I'm just using this as a way to start a chat: how was your Winterval in general? Do anything nice? Eat anything good?

Nightingale certainly isn't the sort of game I was expecting from a former BioWare developer, but I'm well excited to give it a go. Announced at The Game Awards 2021, Nightingale is a survival craft 'em up set in a fantastical, alt-history world. It's being made by Inflexion Games, a studio lead by Aaryn Flynn, former programmer and general manager at the Dragon Age and Mass Effect developers.

But don't go in expecting the sort of huge, arcing plotlines of BioWare's recent games. While Nightingale will have an over-arching narrative, it's being designed to offer up adventures that let you make your own stories. I spoke to Flynn at the end of last year to find out a little bit more about what that entails.

Riot Games, the makers of Valorant and League Of Legends, have agreed to pay out $100 million (£74m) as part of a proposed settlement to a class-action suit brought against them for "systemic sex discrimination and harassment". Money will go to current and former female employees and contract workers. The suit started in 2018 following widespread allegations of a festering workplace culture, and was originally due to be settled for $10 million (£7m) until California state authorities raised objections that it wasn't enough.

Death Stranding Director's Cut Pc Steam Epic Games Store SpringWhen it came to Death Stranding Director's Cut, the question wasn't about if it was coming to PC, but when. After all, the original, non-enhanced version of the game already graced us back in July 2020. Why wouldn't the updated edition follow suit? Today during CES 2022, Intel formally announced that the game was coming to PC this spring. The reveal comes at the heels of yesterday's press release leak, which our sister site Destructoid had sniffed out. The game will be once again published by the folks at 505 Games. This is a good thing, as the company did well with the 2020 port of the original release. In fact, Death Stranding on PC excelled compared to the wacky-haired, buggy port of Horizon Zero Dawn, which Sony published itself. 505 Games took to Twitter with the Director's Cut announcement, saying it is "the definitive [Death Stranding] experience, and will incorporate Intel's new XeSS graphics technology." If you're wonder...

Intel Core i9-12900K Intel Alder Lake Games 600 Series ChipsetSince its launch in the fall, Intel's 12th gen CPUs have only had high-end Z690 motherboards available for early adopters. That meant that those that wanted a more affordable or budget-friendly board still had to wait before completing a new build. At CES 2022, Intel finally gave those users options with the unveiling of the H670, B660, and H610 SKUs for the 600 series chipset. Each new SKU provides various benefits depending on what you are looking for. Because of that, each will have their own variable pricing set by various manufacturers.   As far as the general specifications for the motherboards, there is a lot to like. The H670 offers eight DMI 4.0 lanes, up to 12 PCIe 4.0 lanes, and up to 12 PCIe 3.0 lanes. For USB lovers, you can have up to 14 USB ports total with it broken up between USB 2, USB 3.2 Gen 1×1, USB 3.2 Gen 2×1, and USB 3.2 Gen 2×2. The B660 offers a max of 12 USB ports, four DMI 4.0 lanes, six PCIe 4.0 lanes, and eight PCIe 3.0 lanes. ...

Sonic Frontiers Delayed Open World EnvironmentsSonic Frontiers was first announced as part of December's Game Awards, but that wasn't always the plan. As revealed in a recent investor Q&A, it was originally intended to launch in 2021. However, Sega delayed Sonic Frontiers in order to focus on quality. Last year was the 30th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog, which would have made it a fantastic opportunity to launch such a milestone game. However, Sega didn't feel as though it was ready yet. During the Q&A session, it is stated that the team wanted to spend more time to "brush up the quality" of its gameplay.   Addressing the stigma Long-term Sonic fans will know of the stigma attached to Sega's signature franchise. For many years now Sega has been guilty of releasing games that just aren't up to scratch. At its worst it has been responsible for overlooking some awful titles such as Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Seeing Sonic Frontiers' delay ...
