While your memories of the original Final Fantasy VII may be almost entirely fond, let it not be forgotten that to get the game looking that nice on older PCs concessions had to be made. Like most sections of the game running at a dreadful 15 frames per second.

Blizzard outlines culture changes, promises game announcements after Microsoft deal

Microsoft is set to buy Activision Blizzard in what's likely to be the biggest deal in the history of the industry - assuming it all meets regulatory approval, of course. But amid scrutiny from both employees and players, the Blizzard side of the business has just provided a broad blog post outlining some plans for cultural change, while taking the opportunity to promise "exciting announcements" for games next week.

Blizzard boss Mike Ybarra says that the company knows "we need to deliver content to our players on a more regular basis and innovate both in and beyond our existing games. We have some exciting things to announce, and I'll be sharing more next week." BlizzCon Online had previously been scheduled for early 2022, but the convention was put on indefinite hold in the wake of the lawsuit.

Ybarra spends the bulk of the post outlining plans for some structural change at Blizzard. Executives will now have their compensation tied to improvements in company culture, and Ybarra says that the company has added new positions like a culture leader, an organisational leader for HR, and a diversity, equity, and inclusion specialist focused on tracking improvements. Ybarra also details additional processes for employees to express concerns to management.

Nebuchadnezzar, the Mesopotamian city builder, gets a huge update next month

It's party time in the Fertile Crescent, or it's about to be, anyway. Mesopotamia-themed city-building game Nebuchadnezzar is about to see its long-awaited 1.3 update, which the developers have revealed will arrive February 16. With it comes an impressive list of new features and systems that will make building the biggest temple in the land a lot more interesting.

One of the major new systems coming to Nebuchadnezzar with the 1.3 update is dieties. Your city will have a patron god, and you'll be able to select up to three more for your citizens to worship. Each one comes with a set of associated bonuses, but the strength of those bonuses will depend on your city's relationship with the appropriate god. In all, developer Nepos Games says there will be more than 40 to choose from.

So, how do you maintain your relationship with the local pantheon? For that, you'll want to hold festivals - another new mechanic arriving in update 1.3. Festivals are held by spending goods, which you'll pick from a new menu. The quality and variety of the goods you select for use at the festival determine the festival's level, which in turn determines how happy it makes the god in whose name it's being held.

     There's

BioWare has been offering occasional bits of info on the as-yet-untitled fourth Dragon Age game, but don't take that to mean that we'll get a release date this year. Multiple reliable insiders have reported that the new Dragon Age is not arriving in 2022, and is in fact more likely to launch late in 2023.

"A source with knowledge of EA's plans has said there's 'no chance' that Dragon Age 4 will release in 2022," freelance writer Tom Henderson says in a tweet. (Henderson is known for Battlefield leaks, and more recently revealed Quantic Dream's Star Wars game months ahead of its official announcement.)

Henderson's report has been backed up by journalist Jeff Grubb, who reiterates his earlier reporting on Dragon Age's 2023 release plans, saying that the game is at least a full year away. A summer 2023 release "is the earliest possible timeframe for the launch of Dragon Age 4, and even that is a vague hope more than a real target." Grubb says there's been no delay to the game, and "EA has long known that BioWare wasn't getting it ready for 2022".

Hitman 3's Year Two patch notes have arrived

Hitman 3 year two is officially here, which means a massive update has been deployed for the open-world game about tracking down and snuffing the world's greasiest entrepreneurs. The update, as we've reported, includes full VR support for every PC version of the game, as well as a new game mode and a raft of bug fixes.

Hitman 3 in VR supports every World of Assassination level, including all of the settings from both Hitman and Hitman 2. I/O Interactive says that if you have access to a level in Hitman 3, you can now play it in VR on PC - it's that simple. That'll work regardless of the version you're playing - the original Epic Games Store version, the newly launched Steam version, or the Hitman Trilogy edition available on Game Pass and the Microsoft Store.

There's a new game mode as well, called Elusive Target Arcade. Today, January 20, three new arcade contracts are available in Hitman 3, each one corresponding to one of the three World of Assassination games. Each contract includes three missions, and if you succeed in them all, you'll be able to reset and play it again. Otherwise, you'll be locked out for 12 hours. All in all, you'll be able to try 11 past elusive target missions in this initial batch.

Expeditions: Rome will not be affected

A month ago, the founders of Logic Artists - the studio behind the Expeditions series, including the newly-released Expeditions: Rome - announced that they had raised $5 million USD to build blockchain games at a new company called Dynasty Studios. A report from VentureBeat suggests that, following the launch of Rome, "Logic Artists will wind down and its staff will join Dynasty Studios".

Responding to concerns from fans on the official Steam forums, the community manager of publisher THQ Nordic says that "nothing of this will affect Rome or THQ Nordic in any shape or form, not now or in any future plans that there may be". A member of the Expeditions: Rome development team adds that "not everyone who worked on Expeditions: Rome will join Dynasty," and notes that "the Expeditions series has been owned by THQ Nordic since before Rome began development. The creation of Dynasty will not affect the support of Rome nor the DLC plans."

THQ Nordic picked up the rights to the Expeditions IP in 2018, which at the time included Conquistador, Vikings, and a then-unannounced third game that was entering development in collaboration between the publisher and Logic Artists.

Midnight Ghost Hunt is a hilarious mix of Ghostbusters and prop hunt

How does one become a paranormal investigator anyway? It's a question that's bouncing around in my head as I sit in Midnight Ghost Hunt's version of the Ectomobile, flanked by seasoned ghost hunters. I know I'm about to face off against a team of poltergeist players, but as my teammates survey their high-tech gadgets I can't help feeling like I've blagged my way into a very serious job I know nothing about. However, after spending an hour with developer Vaulted Sky Games' supernatural shooter, I think I'm ready to leave this games journalism business lark behind and take up ghost hunting full-time.

The premise is simple: playing as a hunter, your job is to locate and exterminate some antagonistic apparitions. The ghosts don't want that. Their goal is to kill the hunters, and they can hide inside inanimate objects around the level to get the jump on unsuspecting players. After learning this I spend most of the first match taking paranoid potshots at every teapot, lamp, and side table that looks at me funny. Just like one of those ghost-hunting TV shows, each gameplay session kicks off with a spot of paranormal investigation, which eventually builds to a chaotic crescendo when the clock strikes midnight.

If the match gets to this point, the roles of predator and prey are reversed, so the hunters will need to hunker down and wait to be rescued, while the ghosts are imbued with a ghoulish red glow and increased strength and resilience. Put it this way, if Midnight Ghost Hunt was a horror movie, you can be sure that nobody would be left alive by the end credits.

Genshin Impact Yae Miko materials: all ascension materials

Looking for Yae Miko's ascension materials? According to rumours about the Genshin Impact 2.5 update, Yae Miko, the elegant Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine, is going to be one of the new Genshin Impact characters on an upcoming Genshin Impact banner.

Although she's still in development and her skills are constantly being tweaked on the 2.5 beta server, players have uncovered plenty of early information about the pink-haired kitsune maiden. This includes her abilities, constellations, and passives ahead of the Yae Miko banner release date. As a result, we have a list of the required ascension materials for Yae Miko, which you'll need in order to unlock additional abilities.

As these materials take a long time to accumulate, many players are stockpiling them in anticipation of pulling Yae Miko when her banner arrives. It's important to note that in order to ascend a character, you must meet the required adventure rank and character level, too. We've put together a list of all the Yae Miko materials for ascension, and how to obtain them. As this information is based on beta testing, be aware that it may change so even if you prepare everything in this list there's no guarantee the requirements will be the same come release.

Panic. Panic at the museum reception desk, as the astronaut suit I have belatedly possessed is set upon by a four-strong team of ghost busters. We're in the opening seconds of the round and only 20 minutes into my Midnight Ghost Hunt hands-on preview, which means I've yet to figure out important concepts like 'where the hunters spawn in', or nuances like 'this button lets me hide in props' as opposed to 'this button telekinetically waggles props about like ectoplasmic dinner bells'. As ghosts we're supposed to mostly stay schtum for the five minutes it takes to reach midnight, at which point we get to both metaphorically and literally flip the tables on the living. Instead: panic.

Daemon X Machina Free Epic Games StoreWhat's better than a free game? That's right, a free game that's also kind of new. Really big emphasis on the kind of for this one. Daemon X Machina launched on Switch in September of 2019, before coming to Steam some months later in February of 2020. It's a fast, flashy, anime-esque mech game that I enjoyed a fair amount back when I reviewed it. However, the game is now coming to the Epic Games Store. On top of that, and much more surprising, is that the game will be the EGS free game of the week when it relaunches. Set your calendars for January 27, which is a week from today. Daemon X Machina will be free for the taking as soon as the current game, mind-bogglingly clever puzzle game Relicta, is done hogging the spotlight.      Windjammers 2 Review 1It's not often that nearly 30-year-old arcade games randomly get sequels, but that's exactly what happened with Windjammers 2. The original, made for Neo Geo arcade setups by powerhouse Data East, came out in 1994, answering the question of "what if Pong, but sports game?" Now, Dotemu has released a sequel. The gameplay and presentation are undoubtedly impressive. Responsive, colorful, and pointedly unique, there's a worthy follow-up to the original game here. But, at the same time, the game is missing some features that would really help to make it a knockout. I've also been having repeated issues with the online on launch day, making this event less sparkling than it could have been. To put the premise simply, Windjammers 2 is human air hockey. Two people throw a frisbee back and forth, aiming for their opponent's goal. Goals are typically divided between easier-to-hit, three-point sections and smaller five-point sections. By default, 15 p...

Midnight Ghost Hunt Hands On Preview 1We first got word of Midnight Ghost Hunt way back in June of 2019, sending a chill of excitement up our spines. Its developer, Vaulted Sky Games, was looking to recharge the ghost-hunting and prop-hunting genres — at pretty much the same time. One could describe Midnight Ghost Hunt as a Ghostbusters-meets-PropHunt game, and that's not far off the mark. The game has received alpha and beta tests, but I hadn't tried my hand at it until just recently. I was able to jump in for a hands-on preview of Midnight Ghost Hunt, and had a spooky good time. Midnight Ghost Hunt is a team-based, four-on-four multiplayer game. It sees a group of weapon- and gadget-wielding hunters facing off against some feisty poltergeists. But don't think that the game paces itself like Phasmophobia; the heavily armed hunters are on the clock, and only have until midnight to clean house.   The conceit is in the game's name. Hunters have until midnight to discover and subdue the g...
