I can't believe I've had to reach this far back into the archives for this, but anyone who was reading the site back in 2008 (!) might remember a game called Rose & Camellia, which was kinda like Punch-Out!, only if everyone was straight out of a Jane Austen novel.

Wizards of the Coast, the company that owns and runs Dungeons & Dragons, is taking the publisher behind a new sci-fi RPG to court in an attempt to halt the game's release. They're arguing not only does it infringe on D&D's intellectual property rights, but that it contains "blatantly racist and transphobic content".

Pacific Drive

Pacific Drive was one of the new titles debuted at September 13th's PlayStation State of Play broadcast, and it doesn't lack for atmosphere. A trailer using a mix of pre-rendered cinematic footage and in-engine gameplay via PS5 showed a harrowing journey through a temperate forest.

Check out the announcement trailer below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dN1I_znpzrk

The Pacific Drive title and environs clue viewers in to the game's setting: In North America's Pacific Northwest region. The gameplay shown consists of driving through territory experiencing increasingly deadly and unnatural hazards. From low-visibility fog to strange creatures to lightning storms and spontaneously-growing stone pillars, the region appears to be influenced by reality-bending phenomena. The car itself also appears in various states of augmentation, featuring new gadgets, armor, and unknown devices strapped to its outside.

Within the Pacific Drive car, various sensors and navigational aids show the driver useful info. An oscilloscope changes color and increases in frequency when an "instability front" is nearby. Battery meters, a compass indicator, and a screen also show the condition and direction of the car. Exactly why the player is even driving through all of this is not explained. In fact, other than a radio voice and a single line about "calling her, now", there is no dialog or visible interaction with NPCs in the trailer.

Check out some screenshots from the game in the gallery.

A post from developer Ironwood Studios on the PlayStation Blog introduces Pacific Drive in a bit more detail. The game is set in Washington State's Olympic Peninsula region, where decades ago the U.S. government used the area to test mysterious technologies. Something went wrong, causing it to wall off the whole region and call it the Olympic Exclusion Zone. After being stuck inside, you must search deeper to find a way out and solve the mysteries of the Zone. Your station wagon will serve as your lifeline, protecting you from the Zone's hazards as long as you can keep it maintained. Safe areas and garages can be found, but every storm that hits the Zone will change the landscape and threats you face. Ironwood calls the game a "road-lite", emphasizing that the game is run-based and meant to be played and replayed.

Pacific Drive is in development, and scheduled for release in 2023 on the PS5 and PC.

atelier ryza 3

Following the Nintendo Direct broadcast that took place on September 13, 2022, Koei Tecmo has opened up a website for Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key. This title is in commemoration of Atelier series's 25th anniversary. There is also an announcement trailer that is just over two minutes long.

The trailer showcases the story, characters, gameplay, and theme song for Atelier Ryza 3. You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MReh2OflNg&t=1s

Ryza will be able to traverse the four regions and open world map in multiple ways, such as on a mount. The trailer also shows off four characters who will be Ryza's new party members in this game. Their silhouettes are visible on the Atelier Ryza 3 website's character section. More information on who they are will likely appear in the near future.

It takes place after Atelier Ryza 2, and is Ryza's "final summer adventure." This game will likely conclude Ryza's story. The game will have connected maps and no loading times when player move from area to area. There will also be a total of 11 party members. Right now, the only characters on the website other than Ryza are Klaudia, Lent, and Tao.

An early purchase bonus that will come with the game is a "Summer Look" costume set. It will contain seven costumes and will be available for the first two weeks after Atelier Ryza 3 comes out. Those who miss out on this may get the chance to purchase them later.

Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key will come out on the PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam on February 24, 2023.

Bridget

If it wasn't clear enough before, it certainly is now: Bridget, longtime Guilty Gear alum and the most recent addition to Guilty Gear Strive's roster, is a woman. The latest issue of Arc System Works' Guilty Gear Strive Developer's Backyard newsletter features, among other things, comments by Game Director Akira Katano and Developer Daisuke Ishiwatari on the character.

According to Ishiwatari, Bridget self-identifies as a woman.

Here's the full quote in English. The Japanese version of the article can be found at this link.

"We've received many inquiries about Bridget's gender. After the events of Bridget's story in Arcade Mode, she self-identifies as a woman.

So, as to whether "he" or "she" would be the correct pronoun for Bridget, the answer would be "she."

Ishiwatari went on to connect Bridget's journey in discovering her identity to her backstory (where she was assigned male at birth, but raised as a daughter due to her village's superstitions), and the events of her story in Guilty Gear Strive Arcade Mode. In her exchanges with fellow fighters Goldlewis Dickinson and Ky Kiske, "Bridget faces parts of herself she has tried to ignore, and makes a big decision for herself."

Katano also put to rest a misconception about the nature of storytelling in Guilty Gear's Arcade Mode.

"By the way, although the difficulty and story dialogue of Arcade Mode change depending on your match results, this doesn't change the main plot, nor are there alternate endings such as "good" or "bad" endings. The same goes for other characters' Arcade stories as well. In general, these variations show other aspects of the characters."

This misconception was previously used by some commentators to argue that Bridget only self-identifies as a woman in a "bad" ending of Arcade mode, thus making it invalid. Though not referencing these arguments directly, Katano's comment appears to refute this line of reasoning.

Besides weighing in on Bridget's gender identity, the team delivered other insights about the character and their upcoming plans for Guilty Gear Strive. They mentioned that Bridget's mechanics were reworked from earlier appearances to make her more accessible to newer players. Thanks to the reworks, Bridget in Strive is "the kind of character where it's fun even just pressing buttons."

In keeping with a roadmap for the game shared early in August, the Fall 2022 season should see the rollout of an update to support cross-platform play between PS4, PS5, and PC. A seventh new character will also be added. Beta tests for crossplay will commence in late September or early October 2022, with announcements via the official website.

Guilty Gear Strive is available on PS4, PS5, and PC. Bridget is playable for players who purchase Season Pass 2.

rose camellia switch

It's time for Reiko to dust off her dukes and ready her wrists for some more slapping action, as Playism has announced an upcoming Nintendo Switch port of Rose and Camellia. Not only will there be a new local multiplayer mode, but there will also be three new chapters to play through. There will also be a change to the combat system. [Thanks, DenFami!]

While it will still be turn-based, you will no longer be able to slap around your enemy as much as you want to. You can only slap once, though you can mix in feints. You can either swing your joycon to swipe, or use the touchscreen. Though you will be able to play as four different characters this time, the plot of each route will still focus on the internal power struggles of the aristocratic Tsubakikoji family.

You can watch the trailer for Rose and Camellia on the Nintendo Switch here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FI8it7DOACw&t

This game originally came out in 2008 as a Flash game for Windows PC browsers, before appearing as a mobile app in 2020.

The story follows Reiko, the widow of the Tsubakikoji family's eldest son. After his death, she quite literally fights the other members of the family for the inheritance. Her story is the "Legendary Rose Bride" chapter. The Switch version will also have new stories "The White Camellia of Vengeance," "World Youth," and "A Quiet Camellia's Daily Life." Aside from new characters appearing as opponents, you will also be able to play as other members of the Tsubakikoji family, such as Saori.

Rose and Camellia is in development for the Nintendo Switch. It is readily available for mobile devices. There is no news on a localization yet.
