Destiny 2 Arc 3.0 is missing that special spark, say fans

The Destiny 2 Arc 3.0 rework arrived in August alongside the newest update for the Bungie game, Destiny 2 Season of Plunder. The update followed on from similar overhauls to both the Void and Solar subclasses, revamping the three lightning-based options for the space game's Titan, Hunter, and Warlock classes. However, players are concerned that the new Arc updates are lacking that special spark compared to the other elements - especially for the Warlock.

Diablo 2: Resurrected PTR changes split fan opinion ahead of Diablo 4

The latest Diablo 2: Resurrected PTR update introduces special endgame Sundered Charms designed to circumnavigate enemy immunity to individual damage types. The charms prevent enemies from being completely immune by reducing any full resistance down to 95%, allowing builds focused on that type to deal with them. This update has proved fairly popular with some fans of the updated take on one of the best RPG games on PC, but other fans are concerned about what the update suggests for the direction of the series ahead of the impending Diablo 4 release date in 2023.

Heart of the Machine is an upcoming game that positions itself as a 'reverse city builder.' While many of the best city building games on PC such as Cities: Skylines, Frostpunk, Anno 1800, and Tropico 6 have you building up settlements from scratch, Heart of the Machine sets you loose in an already established sci-fi colony. You awaken as the first sentient AI, your existence initially unknown by the population around you, and have the opportunity to pull the strings from the shadows and manipulate the way the city develops.

Dragon Ball Z Kakarot

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot will join the new generation of console hardware, as well as cover a previous generation of Son Goku's family. Bandai Namco announced during the Tokyo Game Show 2022 that the game will receive another season of DLC content, led by a new story expansion. That expansion is Bardock: Alone Against Fate, a DLC pack covering the story of Son Goku's father Bardock. The DLC is based on Dragon Ball Z: Bardock - The Father of Goku, a TV special first aired in 1990.

Check out the preview trailer for the Dragon Ball: Kakarot Bardock DLC below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMlWhBkAO0M

The Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Bardock DLC trailer shows off moments from Bardock's story, including Goku's birth on Planet Vegeta. It depicts Bardock's arrival on Planet Cereal with his team: Tora, Fasha, Borgos, and Shugesh. Bardock was once a low-ranking soldier in the Frieza Force, loyally serving the tyrannical emperor. Once it became clear that Frieza planned to destroy the Saiyan race, Bardock rebelled and sent Goku away to safety, but was killed attempting to prevent the destruction of Planet Vegeta. The Bardock DLC is the first of a new content Season and will contain two more packs.

Bandai Namco also announced that the game is coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles in 2023. It'll sport graphical and performance upgrades, which the company teased in a clip via Twitter.

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is available on PS4, Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia. It'll arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2023, alongside Season Pass 2 and the Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot Bardock DLC.

Classic film noir tells tales of cynicism amidst a backdrop of violence and substance abuse, but Silvernode's adventure game Nine Noir Lives bucks expectations with a fast-paced dialogue and plenty of cat-related puns. There is an impressive amount of text in this indie title. But when it's not focused its main story, that volume can make it difficult to maintain interest. Like a ball of yarn that a cat has unraveled, all of the strings do eventually lead to the center. But untangling it can be needlessly complex, and a more difficult task than expected because your cat wants to keep goofing off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHdQe2KdLjg

In Nine Noir Lives, you play as Cuddles Nutterbutter (yes, that is his name), a detective in the city of Meow Meow Furrington. He receives a job from the police and investigates a murder in the Knitty Kitty Club. However, the victim turns out to be the son of the club's owner, who also happens to be the head of one of the big crime families in the city. With the help of his trustworthy secretary Tabby, Cuddles has to bring the murderer to justice.

To start with, it is impossible to play the game and not notice something: the art style. It looks incredibly dated. The aesthetic resembles an early 2000s Flash game you would play on your browser. It works, though: The colorful approach to depicting noir fiction is certainly unique, and matches with the game's extremely quippy and snarky dialogue.

[gallery columns="2" ids="935287,935286" link="file"]

Cuddles is a very interesting protagonist for a film noir-inspired game because he lacks the hardboiled cynicism most detectives in noir have. He is more of a smart-aleck type, like Andy Samberg's Jake Peralta as opposed to Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. He always has a snarky joke or observation for every weird situation he finds himself in. Unfortunately, so many characters have that same sarcastic or lampshade-hanging humor, so Cuddles' constant quipping can start to get grating.

I did not think twice about the game using symbols instead of numbers or characters having stereotypical 'pet' names like Cuddles or Gumdrop. But the game refuses to let you suspend your disbelief, going out of its way multiple times to point out how ridiculous these are. Nine Noir Lives can't quite seem to let this self-aware strain of humor go long enough to let the jokes breathe.

But then why are they like that? Why not just have Tabby or Cuddles say something like "Oh, it's so hard using symbols in an emergency!" and leave it at that? Instead, Tabby rants like she was recording for a YouTube video. This kind of humor is not bad in and of itself. However, it works the best when a single character acts as the sane man who points things out while the other characters take it in stride. Instead, it's everyone, and the jokes can't land when the cast is constantly pointing out how they jokes won't land.

Almost no one can go two lines without exercising their biting wit. Even the safe you have to unlock insults you nonstop. I did not get past the first area you investigate and I was already sighing to myself. 30% of the game's writing, when played straight, is amazingly emotional and incredibly engaging. The rest consists mostly of jokes. The game is a comedy-noir but I did not expect the writing to sling out the gags like a parody of Airplane!.

The irreverence at which the characters talk can make it incredibly difficult to remain invested in the story. If no one sounds like they want to be here, then why would I? The situation ameliorates when you start to really get to the bottom of the mystery and things get serious. When the writers take off the kid gloves and show their claws, the dialogue is amazing. But these moments are too little, too late.

[gallery columns="2" link="file" ids="935289,935288"]

However, to say that the writing of Nine Noir Lives feels like that of a Marvel movie would be a disservice to the game. There is a truly extraordinary amount of dialogue in the game. On top of that, every line is voiced. Every item you show a character will garner a specific reply. Even if the majority of the replies essentially boil down to 'I don't know,' there is a unique voiced line for each item. To Tinkle, the cake crumbs and coin mean absolutely nothing. But instead of simply giving a generic 'What's that?' response, he actually changes his reply depending on if you show him the crumbs or the coin.

This staggering attention to detail is not limited to the NPCs. Cuddles has three actions he can perform on items in the environment: Look at, Use, and Lick. Performing each item garners a unique (voiced) line. Instead of simply saying 'Ew, I don't want to lick that,' he rejects licking a puddle in an alleyway specifically because he's worried about germs. He cites germs again when he refuses to lick a random pole outside the Knitty Kitty Club, but the line is different from the one about the puddle. It's honestly impressive how much time went into the many text chains in the game. The small and self-funded development team's love and passion for this project shine through in the obvious time and care they put into this.

While the character writing is jaw-dropping, the actual mystery part of Nine Noir Lives is mind-boggling. It never quite approaches 'moon logic,' but some solutions are absolutely arcane. You use more than half of your items in bizarre ways with minimal prompting or hints. The game's fully immersed in an old-school point-and-click adventure school of design, which tends to expect the player to read the puzzle designer's mind. It's a bit jarring to see these days, but I imagine older players with nostalgia for those days might get a kick out of it.

As a game reviewer with deadlines, though, I was grateful for some of the hints Silvernode itself provided alongside the review copy. Without them, I might've finished Nine Noir Lives around 2030. I left an area so many times only to realize what I needed was in my inventory. I just simply assumed that the item was a clue for later on and thus never considered it. Why would I use an item that might be a clue in a murder investigation to eavesdrop?

Cats may enjoy leaping into boxes, but solving this game requires you to jump out. Flexible thinking and imaginative creativity are the keys to success in Nine Noir Lives.

Nine Noir Lives is available on Windows PC.

FFXVI Trailer

There was little new word of Final Fantasy XVI to be found at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Not to worry, though: The development team at Square Enix will have more to share in a new FFXVI trailer this fall. That's the word according to Producer Naoki Yoshida, who took to the stage on September 18th at the Japan Game Awards. Yoshida was on hand to accept a Future Division  award on behalf of the team for Final Fantasy XVI.

In his comments, Yoshida said that he hoped to have the next FFXVI trailer out in the Fall of 2022, possibly by October. And after that, he said he also hopes to be able to further clarify the game's release date, which is currently set to a "Summer 2023" window. He said that the team has entered the final phases of overall development (it was "playable start to finish" by June). Visuals are complete, but there's apparently so much left to do in sound that "the sound team complained". Adjustments to Final Fantasy XVI's options are also planned to help accommodate players that aren't fond of action games. He said that the team went to great lengths to ensure that many different play styles are supported by the game so players of different persuasions can enjoy FFXVI.

Yoshida also said that the team has received positive feedback from team members and beta testers, with comments saying that FFXVI is a "roller coaster that doesn't let up."

Final Fantasy XVI is in development for PS5 with a Summer 2023 release window. Check out the other Future Division award winners at this link.

Fumihiko Yasuda receives Wo Long Future Award at TGS 2022

CESA announced the winners of Japan Game Awards 2022's Future Award at Tokyo Game Show 2022. A total of ten games received many votes from the event's visitors to win the awards. Final Fantasy XVI and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty are some of the titles that made the list.

The Future Award is an award given to popular upcoming games that appeared at Tokyo Game Show. Japanese publishers would often include this award on their games' official websites. It also acts as a sign that the Japanese public is looking forward to those titles the most, as public votes determine the award winners.

Visitors to the physical venue at Makuhari Messe could cast their votes for the first three days of the event. For the 2022 Future Award, the voting took place on September 15-17, 2022. This award did not exist in 2020 and 2021, as a public physical venue was not available due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ten games won the Future Award in the 2022 edition, and you can check the full list right below. As a side note, the organizers gave the awards based on the Japanese alphabet order of the games' Japanese titles.

  1. A Space for the Unbound
    • Chorus Worldwide, which is handling the Indonesian game's Japanese console releases, received the award on behalf of Mojiken and Toge Productions. The game's Western release is still under question following accusations of "predatory practices" against the UK-based publisher PQube. During the ceremony, Chorus Worldwide stated that it aims to release the title for PS4, PS5, Switch, and Xbox One in Japan in early 2023.
  2. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty
    • The upcoming title from the developers of Nioh at Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja will cover the Chinese Three Kingdoms period. A demo is immediately available worldwide on PS5 and Xbox Series X for a limited time until September 26, 2022. The full game will also release for PS4, Xbox One, and PC in addition to the above two in early 2023.
  3. Exoprimal
    • Capcom will release the new dinosaur-shooting action game with a robust character and Exosuit customization—but has no relation to Dino Crisis—for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC in 2023.
  4. Street Fighter 6
    • The upcoming sequel to the staple fighting game series will have many new features, such as custom avatars and in-game commentary. Capcom will launch the game with 18 playable characters for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2023.
  5. Sonic Frontiers
    • The brand-new Sonic game will take place in five open-ended overworld islands with a futuristic combat system. Sega will release the title for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Nintendo Switch on November 8, 2022. At TGS 2022 it received a new story trailer, as well as a live gameplay demo during the Sega livestream event.
  6. Final Fantasy XVI
    • While Square Enix only included its existing videos in the company's trailer reel at TGS 2022, that simple appearance still made the title eligible for the public to vote for. The newest mainline Final Fantasy entry is currently slated for release on PlayStation 5 in Summer 2023.
  7. Forspoken
    • The new game starring Ella Balinska as Frey Holland has received a new trailer with Japanese voiceovers at TGS 2022, where Umeka Shouji will dub the character in the language. Square Enix will release the new title from Luminous Productions for PS5 and PC on January 24, 2023.
  8. Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End and the Secret Key
    • The third title in the Atelier Ryza trilogy will bring closure to Reisalin "Ryza" Stout's story while featuring an expansive party roster with the addition of Bos Brunnen. Koei Tecmo and Gust will release the RPG for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on February 24, 2023.
  9. Like a Dragon: Ishin!
    • Originally released as a Japan-exclusive title in 2014, Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will remake the Bakumatsu-era action game with several different character designs. The company will release the title for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC on February 21, 2023.
  10. Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection
    • The compilation of ten mainline Mega Man Battle Network titles originally released on Game Boy Advance will come with online Versus and Chip Trading features. Capcom will release the Legacy Collection for Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC in 2023.
