Like everyone else, I watch The Game Awards for a few reasons: to see "world premiere" trailers, to find out which obvious favorite wins Game of the Year, and to learn how Geoff Keighley is going to cash in his Hideo Kojima friendship coupon this year. 2022 was a huge bummer of a year for a lot of reasons, and buggy video games only exacerbated that feeling. It really does suck to shell out $60 or, as is quickly becoming the norm, $70 on something that is fundamentally broken at launch, especially if that something was created under exploitative working conditions.

Diablo 4 gameplay preview: A window into Sanctuary's woeful world

I have been waiting for access to a Diablo 4 gameplay preview ever since the game was first announced. I have a vaguely cultish obsession with Lilith (trust me when I say I'd fit right into the D4 campaign), as well as an extensive history with all things Diablo. This action RPG series remains my favourite of all time, encompassing what I see as some of the best PC games ever made, and while I've only had a brief glimpse into the macabre world of Diablo 4, I've seen nothing yet to dampen my hype. Whisper it, but Blizzard might just have a hit on its hands - goodness knows it needs one.

If you haven't heard, Microsoft are currently trying to buy Activision Blizzard. Competition regulators from the UK, the EU and the US have been questioning the deal, so in an attempt to reassure them last month Microsoft apparently offered Sony a ten-year commitment to keep selling Call Of Duty on Playstation. Today, Xbox Head Phill Spencer announced that they've made a similar 10-year CoD commitment to Steam and, uh, Nintendo, on which no CoD games currently exist.

Nintendo have signed, while Valve CEO Gabe Newell says his company won't bother with a legal agreement, in part because they don't believe in "requiring any partner to have an agreement that locks them to shipping games on Steam into the distant future".

2023 is shaping up to be a great time for wartime RTS games. If Men Of War 2 and Company Of Heroes 3 weren't enough to keep you busy on the WW2 side of global historical conflicts, Petroglyph Games' The Great War: The Western Front will also be stepping into the trenches of WW1 at some point next year as well – literally, in this case, as planning, digging and capturing these muddy lines of defence will play a vital role in both its pre-combat Theatre Commander mode and busy real-time strategy battles. Recently, I got to play through one of its RTS battles, but what I found was a strategy game quite unlike its WW2 rivals.

In some ways, this shouldn't be surprising. As Petroglyph Games' lead designer Chris Becker tells me over email, "WW1 is known for being a war of attrition and a battle of inches," leading to fewer sweeping power plays when it comes to securing a victory. Indeed, your main concern here isn't so much the winning of each individual battle, but maintaining your side's National Will, which Becker says will be "in constant fluctuation" throughout the campaign – and with both the Allies and Central Powers to pick from here, that could mean very different things depending on who you choose. "It's essential that players continue to monitor this, as the relentless toll that the war will take on National Will can result in overall victory or defeat," says Becker. "Authenticity is at the heart of this, we wanted to truly represent what 'victory' meant in the war - even with success, there is cost."

How the heck do you review Dwarf Fortress? Much like the procedurally generated world spat out at the start of every game, there's already a huge pile of established lore and history out there from the 16 years it's been around. It's like being asked to review Lord of the Rings. It's a vast undertaking, and there aren't any friendly eagles on hand to cut through its dense mythos. Prior to releasing on Steam, I had put a few dozen hours into what is now known as Dwarf Fortress Classic (which is still available for free from Bay 12's website), split over several different periods of time. Thing is, I never really got very far. I'd find a good tutorial, lose a few fortresses to horrible mistakes and then really get established. But then I'd be distracted by the realities of everyday life and by the time I got back to it, I'd forgotten everything and all my resources were hopelessly out of date because of all the wonderful, lovingly detailed updates. Then the cycle would start again.

The good news is that this new version of Dwarf Fortress released on Steam does an admirable job of making the game considerably more approachable. I was apprehensive at first, but then something clicked and I lost the first of what would be many afternoons over the past fortnight, safe in the knowledge that when I eventually stepped away from this goliath, I'd be able to come back without feeling overwhelmed and have to start all over again. It's still good ol' Dwarf Fortress, but this is the most accessible the game has ever been while still being deep, demanding and a legend worthy of being inscribed on a mudstone goblet.

Yuji Naka insider trade

The Special Investigation Department of the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office arrested Yuji Naka, co-creator of Sonic the Hedgehog, due to being suspected of insider trading again during his time working at Square Enix. Naka is one of the two suspects of purchasing stocks of Ateam Entertainment Inc., co-developers of Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier, prior to the game's release. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Yuji Naka along with Taisuke Sasaki, a former Square Enix employee, was arrested a second time on December 7, 2022. They are suspects in two different insider trading scandals. The individuals involved are accused of buying roughly 120,000 shares of Ateam stock between January and February 2021, after learning about the development of Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. The value of the stocks amount to approximately 144.7 million yen.

The individuals were originally arrested earlier in November 2022 for insider trading involving Aiming Inc. and Square Enix, developers of Dragon Quest Tact.

Yuji Naka recently worked with Square Enix in Balan Wonderworld. In April 2022, he attempted to sue Square Enix after his removal from the project shortly before release. He revealed the information on a Twitter thread, in which he accused Square Enix and developer Arzest of being responsible of the release state of the game.

Balan Wonderworld is available for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Sonic Frontiers Soundtrack Streaming Online Now

The Sonic Frontiers soundtrack is now streaming online. Back when Sega discussed the soundtrack, it noted a physical version would appear in December 7, 2022 in Japan. A worldwide release of sorts was promised soon after. Well, now services like Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Spotify all offer it online.

Composer Tomoya Ohtani revealed this would be a 150-track soundtrack. At the time, he noted that each Cyber Space and Guardian's Battle in Sonic Frontiers would have its own song. All 150 are available to hear via sources now. Services like Spotify even sort the tracks by the six albums they appear on. The tracks also note if they were used with cutscenes, Cyber Space stages, Guardians, or at other specific times. For example, the ones you might hear when fishing with Big the Cat are labeled as "Fishing Vibes," "Jingle: Land a Catch," and "Jingle: Land a New Catch."

As for other Sonic Frontiers news, new characters are on the way. Sega released a roadmap of free updates heading to the game. A number of additions will appear in 2023. The last one will involve Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose becoming playable characters alongside Sonic.

Sonic Frontiers is on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the soundtrack is streaming now.

Concerned Ape 'Commited' to December Stardew Valley 1.5 Mobile Debut

The Stardew Valley 1.5 mobile update may yet appear on Android and iOS devices before 2022 ends. Eric "Concerned Ape" Barone offered another update on the patch on Twitter. In it, he noted he is "committed" to it showing up on both platforms in December.

Here is the full statement regarding the update.

Klee's mother Alice talks about Scaramouche the Wanderer's skills and moveset in the latest Genshin Impact Collected Miscellany video.

HoYoVerse shared the newest Genshin Impact Collected Miscellany video to go over the skills in the moveset of Scaramouche, now known as the Wanderer. Each of these segments features a notable character discussing the Talents and passives of a character while people can see them in action. While Dainsleif (Yuri Lowenthal) is often the narrator, this time someone else showed up. Klee's mother Alice talks about him in the new Genshin Impact video.

Things begin by going over his Strum the Swirling Winds Exploration Talent. This means ascending bow and catalyst weapons is less expensive with him. After that, it gets into combat. His Yuuban Meigen normal and charged attack involves wind blades and wind pressure. His Hanega: Song of the Wind Elemental Skill sends him hovering into the air, though he can no longer perform plunging attacks in the Windfavored state. His Elemental Burst Kyougen Five Ceremonial Plays deals AOE Anemo damage. Once he gets his first ascension, the Jade-Claimed Flower passive offers his Elemental Skill buffs if Cryo, Electro, Hydro, or Pyro are present.

Here is the full Wanderer: Any Way the Wind Blows trailer going over Scaramouche's new skills and moveset.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12SZu2t6Ak8&ab_channel=GenshinImpact

As a reminder, this isn't the first time Alice narrated a Genshin Impact Collected Miscellany. She also provided insight into Aloy and Dori. She's also "appeared" in the Midsummer Island Adventure event in-game.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Scaramouche the Wanderer banner is available until December 27, 2022. The character also got his own web event.

In addition to Wave 3 of the paid DLC tracks appearing, Nintendo announced a new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe custom items feature for everyone

It turns out isn't just the release date for the new Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC. Nintendo added something for anyone with the game. A free update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe added a Custom Items feature. This lets people pick and choose items that appear.

In certain multiplayer modes, you can pick which items will and won't appear in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Custom Items screen. This applies to multiplayer modes. Not every online one allows it. However, offline VS will. The page shows a 4x6 grid of the 22 items available in-game. You can select which ones in the grid you'd like to see during a race. It is also possible to turn them all off, all on, or randomize which ones show up.

As a reminder, the paid Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC adds eight tracks. The Rock Cup and Moon Cup appear if someone buys the $24.99 pass or if they are a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber. The courses are pulled from past consle and handheld games and Mario Kart Tour.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is available for the Nintendo Switch, and the Booster Course Pack Wave 3 DLC is out now.

Gundam Evolution 3D Billboard

The destined battle from both Mobile Suit Gundam and Char's Counterattack continues in a new Gundam Evolution 3D Billboard advertisement. Bandai Namco debuted a new presentation for the Cross Shinjuku Vision 3D billboard to promote the game. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Check out a video of the ad in action below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qWxP_HVJos

The ad features the RX-93 ν Gundam ("Nu" Gundam) fighting against the MSN-04 Sazabi, both as seen in Gundam Evolution. As in Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack, the two mobile suits duel using their characteristic "Funnel" remote weapons. The ad features voice-acting from Toru Furuya, the actor who plays protagonist Amuro Ray. Amuro says that "Gundam Evolution isn't just for PCs!" This is a pun on a line from Char's Counterattack where he says that "The ν Gundam isn't just a showpiece," and also references the recent launch of the console versions of Gundam Evolution. A 3D billboard like the Cross Shinjuku Vision uses specially arranged LED screens to play custom videos. The videos use the screens' seamlessness to project the illusion of 3D space, so objects can "pop out". The effect was used to promote Pokemon Scarlet and Violet ahead of launch.

The ν Gundam was added to the game's roster with the debut of its ongoing second season. The Sazabi was part of the launch roster. In-game, the ν Gundam and Sazabi play differently. The Sazabi moves slowly and has a durable shield, while the ν Gundam can use its Fin Funnels to deal damage to targets at medium range.

Gundam Evolution is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

rumble fish 2

The Rumble Fish 2, a 2005 arcade game that previously hadn't received an official global console release, offers some interesting mechanics for someone looking for something new (that's technically old). Giving you defensive and offensive bars, it offers a lot of options in each round as you pit its gang of oddball characters against one another in a battle to beat each other's clothes off. I doubt it'll steal you away from whatever fighter you're regularly playing now, but it's a fun diversion with some good depth.

It's the sixth Fight For Survival (FFS), and you're battling your way to the top using one of thirteen different warriors to beat your way to the top. There's a solid variety of characters in this group as well. Mito, a young lady with an eyepatch and a sword, uses two different stances, Crime and Punishment. These allow her to switch from a relentless rushdown character to someone who can poke the opponent to keep them out. Boyd is a tough retiree (who's definitely hiding a small animal in his hat) who loves to beat you down up close. Some of his moves build a scorpion meter, which, when it reaches thirteen, means his supers will deal absurd damage.

Like the old man mentioned above, there are many good character designs in The Rumble Fish 2. I just had to go with the old-man-on-vacation look, but you also have the colossal, monstrous boxer Bazoo that gets locked in a cage after every round (and who'll drop rocks at varied ranges throughout it). Sheryl is an assassin who uses thin wires to do all manner of acrobatic tricks and cut you down at the same time. Lud has a punk look to him with his bright mohawk and temperature meter that gives him access to stronger versions of his moves. The characters stand out and have some nice personality, giving you aesthetic reasons to choose each character on top of their moveset.

rumble fish 2

There are some standard moves between the characters that offer some interesting possibilities. Dashing forward will carry its momentum into your attacks, allowing you to do more pushback and strike with some interesting effects. Backdashing gives you some invincibility frames, so if you can time it well you can quickly punish someone who uses the same move a lot (like me). There's a dedicated dodge button as well, which gives you some upper-body invincibility (although you'll still get slammed by lows) and opens up some interesting turnarounds when your opponent think's they'll hit you.

The Rumble Fish 2 also offers you a lot of powerful options by giving you a pair of super bars instead of just one. You'll be charging and Offense and Defensive gauge throughout the match, and these offer unique options. Defensive options can give you an Impact Break if you hit Dodge as a strike is hitting your block. This cuts down on the combo advantage your opponent would normally have, allowing you to slip a counter hit in there. You can spend two Defensive bars (you can get a total of three of each bar) to make that Break even larger. However, you have to be blocking while standing to do this to mid or upper strikes. Blocking low will only Impact Break a low, so if you reflexively block and duck like I do, you'll need to break the habit and be more purposeful if you want to use these moves.

Your Offensive Gauge is a lot simpler to use. You can spend it to rush forward by hitting Strong Punch and Strong Kick, and you can cancel your current move into it. This means that if your attack misses and it looks like you're about to get smacked, you can possibly launch this attack to stop your opponent and keep pressing your own attack. You can also spend one bar on doing a jolt Attack, which is unblockable and can launch your opponent into the air for a juggle combo.

The Rumble Fish 2 still has more things to do with those meters. You can enter a Boost state by spending one of each bar, which enhances your special moves and can give them new properties for a while. Finally, if you have three of each bar, you can do a Critical Art for a ton of damage (and a heck of a flashy attack). It's rarely worth saving up for as the other moves are great in a pinch, though. Still, who can resist the flashy finish?

These bars mean you're rarely without some neat extra options throughout the game. If you're getting flattened, you can turn the whole fight around with the Defensive Bar. If you miss a swing, you can possibly keep that combo going by spending some Offensive Bar. It also means you have a lot of possible options and states to keep track of, though, so learning you character can take longer as you have access to a lot of options. It made for a bit of a steep learning curve as someone who's a novice with fighters, but the inputs were fairly intuitive.

Speaking of inputs, as a former arcade game, The Rumble Fish 2 definitely feels better suited to a Fight Stick for Critical Arts and most damaging specials. The game makes use of a lot of down-forward and down-back motions, which aren't too bad whether you're using a Hitbox (only buttons), Fight Stick, or regular controller. However, pulling off a down-back then back-forward on anything but a Fight Stick can be a real pain without a lot of practice (although I've only been using a Hitbox for a few months, so more experienced players may find it easier than I did. Controller was serviceable on both PS5 and Switch, but Stick players are likely going to have the easiest time with these moves.

rumble fish 2

Not that you need to be able to use all of those complex mechanics and moves to enjoy the game in its single player modes. The game features an Arcade story mode where you battle through an extremely brief story. The last boss, Beatrice, will keep you there for a while as, unlike you, she starts the round with full Offensive and Defensive bars and will use them to cheaply maul you for a good while. There's a Time Attack mode to see how fast you can finish the game, a Survival Mode to see how many opponents you can beat without losing, and a fairly decent training mode where you can learn your moves.

An odd element that's missing is that The Rumble Fish 2 doesn't explain many of the Offensive and Defensive bar mechanics outside of loading screens throughout the game. I had to do a fair amount of research online (and thankfully there are some good resources) to learn about these tools. The loading screen explanations disappear after a few seconds, making it hard to read them. It's also hard to learn a mechanic just by reading about it on a loading screen, so you'll want to do some reading on the game before you start.

Once you know what's up, though, it comes together quite well. The battles move at a good pace that doesn't feel sluggish, but still gives you some time to think about what's happening. It's also fast enough that you can catch an opponent with a quick attack as well. The character movements feel a bit odd though, as their animations are done in such a way that they look just a bit strange. They're done in a kind of 3D that I just didn't much care for. Some of them almost look like there's this weird ripple effect flowing across their bodies. Once the hits start landing, you stop caring about these visual quirks, but they are weird when you start to notice them.

Finally, you have the character damage. The Rumble Fish 2 offers persistent clothing and character effects between rounds. If you beat someone hard enough, you'll tear up their suit a bit, as well as rough up their faces and features. It adds a neat touch to the combat to see the effect of your beating on your opponent. It can also be pretty funny to see your character looking rough after a near-loss in one round as well. You may go through the rest of the game looking kinda messed up, which made for an entertaining little detail.

Those details look quite nice on both the PS5 and Switch. Naturally, the PS5 looks a bit sharper, but I found it easier to notice the odd quirks to the character movements because of that. I almost preferred the less-detailed look of the Switch in handheld mode, as it was harder to pick up on the visual details that I didn't like. I could parse the important tells and moments in combat on the smaller screen, but things weren't blown up quite as large so it looked a little better to my eyes. Even docked, the Switch version looked fairly comparable to the PS5 version to me.

I would like to tell you a bit about the online play at the moment, but as of publication, I have not been able to find a single online match. That wasn't surprising, as there wouldn't be many players before launch, but unfortunately that means I can't weigh in on this vital element just yet.

The Rumble Fish 2 is an enjoyable romp through a bit of fighting game history. It's got some solid character designs whether you want to look cool or silly, some great moves to make each character compelling to play, and a vast set of special abilities that will tweak your character in all manner of situations. While I don't think it's going to cause a massive shift in the competitive scene, I think it's going to make for a lot of fun nights beating the shirts off of your buddies in your home and down at the local tournaments.

The Rumble Fish 2 launches on December 8, 2022 for the PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Gundam Witch from Mercury Delayed

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury will face two more broadcast delays before its first season ends. According to the show's official Twitter account, the delays will occur for a week in December, and on New Year's Day 2023. Both times it will be due to vacating the time slot for special programming aired by Japan's TBS broadcasting company.

https://twitter.com/G_Witch_M/status/1600037400775839750

According to the official broadcast schedule detailing the Gundam: The Witch From Mercury delay, episode 10 of the show will air as planned on December 11, 2022. Then the show will be off-air on December 18, 2022, to make way for a special edition of TBS news program "Houdou no Hi." Thus, episode 11 airs on Christmas Day, December 25, 2022. The next week sees the schedule collide again with a global holiday: January 1st. The New Year's Day 2023 special programming takes priority then as well, pushing the final episode of the season to January 8, 2022.

This isn't the first time that Gundam: The Witch From Mercury has seen delays or other production disruptions. Episode 7 was pushed back a week, with a "clip show" recap taking its schedule. Voice actor Yume Miyamoto, who plays Nika Nanaura, stepped back from the role due to health problems. She will be replaced by Haruka Shiraishi starting in Episode 10.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury airs on Crunchyroll, Netflix, other streaming services, and via the GundamInfo YouTube channel.

Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn Trademark filed

Something more to do with Tales of Arise could be on the way. A new Bandai Namco trademark tied to the latest entry in the series appeared. In Europe, the company called dibs on Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). [Thanks, Yoonshik on Resetera!]

The filing date for Tales of Arise: Beyond the Dawn is December 12, 2022. It falls under the 9 and 41 Nice Classes for "Goods and Services," meaning it is connected to video games and arcade games.

Bandai Namco hasn't said anything about this potential project yet. However, staff did speak to possible DLC and sequel plans for the game not long after it launched. Back on July 29, 2021, Producer Yusuke Tomizawa said there would be no DLC, prequel, or sequel to the game. At the time, Tomizawa seemed adamant that this would be a stand-alone title. The only sort of additional content confirmed involved crossovers with mobile games in the series.

Tales of Arise is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Its proven to be quite a successful entry in the series for Bandai Namco. For example, back in April 2022 the title passed two million copies sold worldwide.

Dead Island 2 Trailers Beach PierJust yesterday, publisher Deep Silver uploaded two new Dead Island 2 trailers for fans to sink their teeth into. One of these trailers came in the form of a relatively standard gameplay showcase that provided a glimpse into the central location of HELL-A, essentially the zombie apocalypse version of Los Angeles in Dead Island 2. The second trailer, on the other hand, focused entirely on a rather unusual feature. As it turns out, Dead Island 2 lets players use Alexa to control the game with voice commands. This takes advantage of the new Alexa Game Control functionality that Amazon unveiled during this year's gamescom. The Dead Island 2 HELL-A gameplay trailer features quite a few faithful recreations of Los Angeles's most recognizable locations. All in all, LA still looks relatively vibrant and even somewhat inviting despite all the zombies and explosions everywhere. But of course, this does not mean that players should let their guard down. Fortunately, you can easily ...
