RetroArch gets a big update for online retro gaming

Emulation frontend RetroArch has just gotten its 1.10.0 update, and with it comes a host of improvements to the program's online netplay options. There's also HDR support for Vulkan, new XMB menu options, and a VSync swap interval toggle for Direct3D 10 and 11, but the improvements to the online options are the most exciting bits here.

There are "numerous improvements" to netplay here, including some technical changes that haven't been spelled out in detail, but which should provide a smoother experience. The full patch notes explain that a new relay system is now up and running, text chat has been implemented, and the interface has gotten some improvements to help you see which games you can actually connect to.

RetroArch's netplay options have often been fantastic, with those relay servers making it very convenient to play old games online with friends, cutting out the need for VPNs or port forwarding. But it's also been fiddly and occasionally broken, so hopefully this patch does some good.

Dark Souls is about to be DnD 5E compatible

Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game was announced with a teaser trailer late last year, and today publisher Steamforged Games has revealed the first proper details on what you can expect. The game features a complete ruleset based on Dungeons & Dragons fifth edition, which means you can either play it on its own or take the rules and classes back into your DnD campaign.

The core book for Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game is set to launch in spring 2022. "Inside the lavishly illustrated, hardback core book," the devs say in a press release, "players will find bespoke character classes, a brand-new magic system, and a full bestiary teeming with Dark Souls creatures. Together, roleplayers can brave the crumbling landscape of Lothric and the myriad locations within, encountering familiar faces along the way."

There are no details on the mechanics yet, so I can only speculate in terror about some sort of level drain simulating losing your souls after death. Steamforged previously worked on the Dark Souls board game, a Resident Evil 2 board game, and just recently announced another 5E-compatible RPG game adaptation with Runescape.

New God of War patch adds a sharpness slider for DLSS

The PC edition of God of War adds a few nice features that take advantage of the platform's many graphics options and formats available, and one of those is DLSS - Nvidia's supersampling technology that upscales lower base resolutions to boost performance. A new patch for the action-adventure game adds a sharpness slider to that option, so you can fine-tune the amount of sharpening that occurs when you toggle it on.

The automatic sharpening with DLSS was causing graphical issues for some players, and this option should help ameliorate those in most cases. However, in this current edition, DLSS sharpening still can't be fully turned off, even if the slider is set to zero. A developer from Santa Monica Studios says that's an issue the team will correct in a future update.

The patch also corrects some additional graphics hardware issues, such as incorrect VRAM detection on Intel's XE platform, and some instances of graphics driver crashes. The team says it's also corrected a bug that would disable controls if you opened the inventory screen during the realm travel sequence.

Euro Truck Simulator 2's new Austria opens forbidden roads

SCS Software announced last year that Euro Truck Simulator 2's Austria would be getting a rework. (Don't worry, I missed the announcement at the time, too.) Today they've shown off a whole lot of images of the new Alps, and beyond the beautification efforts, the rework will also introduce some new roads that are typically off-limits to truckers in the real world.

"Although some of the roads, such as the Großglockner-Hochalpenstraße (Grossglockner High Alpine Road) are usually off-limits to truckers," the devs explain in the announcement post, "we decided that we wouldn't want to take away access to this famous but challenging route for our drivers."

The devs haven't yet announced when the Austria rework will launch. In a previous blog post, they explained that it's a "large and a bit more long-term project that is being handled by a small team of experienced map designers and it still needs some time to be finished." Update 1.43 included a revamp to France's Lyon, so hopefully 1.44 might bring us some updates to Austria.

Microsoft Flight Simulator will get DLSS support this year

Microsoft Flight Simulator players have plenty to look forward to this year, including what should be a significant boost to performance. The simulation game will be getting DLSS support later in 2022 when the DirectX 12 mode arrives - which should be a boon to anyone playing on older hardware or at high resolutions.

The latest Developer Q&A livestream revealed quite a few milestones ahead for Flight Simulator. DLSS support and DirectX 12 are on the way "later this year," but Asobo Studio didn't provide any more specific information on that update. However, when that set of features does arrive, players will be able to render the game at lower resolutions to boost performance while still enjoying hi-res visuals.

In the more immediate future, World Update 7 arrives January 31, with updated imagery and new points of interest in Australia. World Update 8 is slated for late March, and will include a refresh for the Iberian peninsula, covering both Portugal and Spain. Sim Update 8 will also arrive in March, and it's focused exclusively on bug fixes.

You can join Midnight Ghost Hunt's closed beta this weekend

Now's your chance to try out the chaotic multiplayer action of Midnight Ghost Hunt, developer Vaulted Sky Games' spin on Prop Hunt and those horrible little mimics from Prey. A closed beta is running this weekend, now through Sunday evening, and you can get in simply by asking for access on Steam.

The closed beta is already underway, and it'll run until 11:59pm PST January 30, which translates to 2:59am EST / 7:59am GMT. It's a 4v4 game of hunters versus ghosts, and in the initial phase, the ghosts try to avoid hunters by hiding inside various props scattered throughout each level. The hunters have to move quickly to find the ghosts, because at the stroke of midnight, it's payback time: the ghosts are empowered with boosts to strength and resilience, and the hunters will have to batten down the hatches and hope they can hold out long enough to be rescued.

Our hardware writer Phil Hayton had a terrific time with his Midnight Ghost Hunt preview session, and Vaulted Sky Games says the closed beta it ran in October was "highly successful."

Warno early access will feature new content every two weeks

Cold War RTS game Warno entered Early Access on Steam January 20, and the developers already have their first content update lined up. In fact, Eugen Systems players can expect new content for Warno about every two weeks during Early Access, although they caution that these may at times be delayed due to unforeseen circumstances.

The studio is naming Warno's Early Access updates after Napoleonic marshals, and the first one is called Milestone Ney. It's coming in February, and will add two new divisions and a new 10v10 map. The new battlegroups are the US 8th Infantry Division (Mechanised) for the NATO side, and the Soviet 39th Guards Motorised Rifle Division for the Warsaw Pact.

The next patch, Milestone Davout, will include two new German divisions, one each from East and West Germany, and multiple new maps. The fourth update, Milestone Murat, will be the same lineup: a new West German division and a new East German division, and additional maps. That's a sizeable expansion to the current Warno roster, which at launch included just two initial battlegroups.

Rust gets a spiffy new hazmat suit in next week's Arctic update

Highly durable survival game Rust has yet another update inbound, this one focusing on the arctic biome. It'll introduce a new cold-weather skin for the hazmat suit to the permanent store, and while it'll cost the same to craft as other hazmat suit variants, it has some noticeably different attributes. The arctic update will arrive February 3.

First, however, is a patch due out today, January 28. This one adds some new Lunar New Year items, including a snarling traditional tiger mask and a sky lantern. The sky lantern is a floating container - you can put an item in it, then swat it with a lit torch to send it up and away into the evening sky. As venerable Rust YouTuber ShadowFrax explains, it'll travel a short distance, and fall if it's shot, carrying whatever you put in it with it.

The new arctic hazmat suit is the first hazmat skin to offer a unique set of stats. Its big benefit is 40% cold protection, which is significantly more than the 8% provided by the default hazmat suit and other variants. It does have a bit less bite, 10% less protection from radiation, and a 2% reduction in damage protection from explosions.

final fantasy vii anniversary

On January 31, 1997, Final Fantasy VII launched in Japan. 25 years later? We're in the middle of a remake effort, the original is on virtually every platform and Cloud and Sephiroth are both in Smash Bros. The Siliconera staff is sharing its favorite FFVII memories. Why not share yours in the comments!

I think finally playing Final Fantasy VII on the PS1 is a big one for me. See, the first time I played it on the PC. (That's how I played FFVIII originally too!) I didn't have a controller, so I had to rely on keyboard controls. And since I didn't have my own computer, I was going into my parents' office and using one of theirs. Which meant I was right at the Northern Cave and end of the game when circumstances meant it was uninstalled to make room for a new business program. Since my first disc ended up too scratched to work along the way? I didn't get to restart and beat the game proper until I played it on a console later. — Jenni

final fantasy vii 25 years later

Final Fantasy VII wasn't my first Final Fantasy — that would be FFVI — but it was likely the most influential. Sure, many moments from FFVI will always be iconic. I doubt I'll ever forget them! But FFVII's whole vibe stuck with me from the day I paid multiple weeks worth of allowance to buy an overpriced, pirated CD copy of it from a local toy store. I even had to play on a hand-me-down PS1 that had to be turned on its side to read the disc. Its blending of seemingly modern-day/sci-fi aesthetic with the monolithic architecture and scale of by-then typical JRPG storytelling was catnip to then 12-year-old me.

It helps too that Remake has been so interesting, to boot. Rather than look like the kind of questionable franchise expansion like much of the Compilation of FFVII? Remake really seems to be grappling with and respecting its previous incarnations. It's an approach that most reboots really don't bother to take. That's something I think might keep FFVII influential for a new generation of nerds. — Josh

final fantasy 7 25th anniversary

My fondest memory of Final Fantasy VII has to do with the CGI film Advent Children. I remember downloading the Japanese announcement trailer for the film, which was such poor resolution I could barely make anything out. And despite not having played Final Fantasy VII myself at that time, I already was keenly aware of who these characters were through cultural osmosis. So I was extremely excited to see these characters in full 3D. I can still remember the pixelated mess of the Nibelheim incident in that trailer. Just thinking about how I huddled in front of my computer with its big, chunky CRT monitor to watch the trailer on repeat fills me with a deep sense of nostalgia. — Kazuma

What are your Final Fantasy VII memories? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter! And read our other handy roundtables for more thoughts from the Siliconera team.

The Silent Hill 3 Robbie the Rabbit mascots are coming back as Nendoroid figures. Good Smile Company announced it will release two inspired by the characters. One is pink, and the other is blue. Both will launch in September 2022 in Japan. A North American release will follow in November 2022. They'll be ¥5,800 /$58.99 each.

While the general look of both characters is the same, the color you choose determines the accessories you will get. Each of the Robbie the Rabbit Nendoroids will have both bloody and clean face options for its face and body. There will also be parts so they can be positioned in a sitting pose. The blue Robbie will be able to carry a circular saw or plank of wood. The pink one will come with a chainsaw and iron pipe.

Prior to Good Smile Company releasing its Robbie the Rabbit Nendoroids, Gecco had its own Silent Hill 3 mascot figures. It worked with Konami to create a set of six small figures. Each one is under four inches tall and flocked. They were available in six colors. Depending on which one you chose, you'd get different weapons with it. There was even a stretcher accessory sold separately.

The Silent Hill 3 Robbie the Rabbit Nendoroids will come to Japan in September 2022 and North America in November 2022. Pre-orders will be open until March 9, 2022.

Sega ArcadeJapan has been the savior of the arcade business for some time now, unlike the United States where arcades are mostly just Dave and Busters or Round1's. (The latter is a lot of fun, at least.) But somehow, the arcade business has remained a stronghold in Japan, bolstered by fighting games, rhythm games, fancy claw machines, and other fabulous games like Gunslinger Stratos. But naturally, as the coronavirus impacts all industries, the arcades have taken a hit. And as for Sega, which has remained a strong supporter of the arcade, the company, unfortunately, is leaving the business behind. It's been about five decades of Sega in the arcade business, so the news feels bitter. In a somber statement released this morning, Sega announced it will sell the remaining amount of shares it holds to Genda Inc. Genda already holds the majority of Sega's arcade shares, but this move sees Sega leaving the business entirely. The remaining locations won't utilize the Sega brand...

Elden Ring game difficulty miyazakiDifficulty in games has been a hot topic recently. There are many who believe that all games should have some measure of accessibility, even if overcoming great odds is a prat of their intrinsic design. Take Dark Souls, for example. Some think that the series, and many Souls-likes, would benefit from on optional, easier mode. Of course, the debate probably won't end any time soon, as both sides have valid reasons to justify their opinion. Hidetaka Miyazaki, who directed Dark Souls and the upcoming Elden Ring, shared how difficulty worked for the game, and why its design could help some struggling players. In a recent interview, he said he has talked about it with his team, calling it a "valid discussion." Miyazaki and FromSoftware have approached Elden Ring a bit different in terms of difficulty and player challenge.      Here's where Xur is in Destiny 2 today – Beyond Light, but not beyond Xur

Xûr is Destiny 2's Exotic gear merchant. He appears every weekend to sell the game's most coveted items in exchange for Legendary shards, but if you're a casual player with limited shards to spend, it can be hard to know which of his wares is most worth your investment. That's where we come in.

As of June 12, 2020, it appears that Xûr is back to providing random rolls - so the Exotic merchant is providing more excitement than he has in a long time. Xûr appears every Friday at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT, and will stick around until the Tuesday reset. We'll update this guide shortly after he arrives, so if you're reading this, you need only read on to learn where he is, and which are the best items he's selling this week.

Now we're in Beyond Light territory, but Xûr's first appearances have been at the usual spots - so maybe don't expect too many surprises from the merchant in the new year of Destiny content.

Here are the Destiny 2 Trials rewards this week

Bungie's pinnacle PvP activity is back in rotation with a major revamp, and if you're looking for details on the Destiny 2 Trials rewards this week, you've come to the right place. Before you start working your way up through the ladder, you'll want to know what you're actually working for - so here's a breakdown of what's available each week, and what map you'll be playing on.

If you're not familiar with Trials of Osiris, it's a weekly PvP challenge where you enter a competitive gauntlet of 3v3 elimination matches. Your rewards are now doled out with a reputation system, so it's not about pure wins anymore, but you will still get special rewards if you can manage to go flawless.

Trials lands with the reset every Friday at 9am PST / 12pm EST / 5pm GMT, and lasts until the Tuesday reset at those same times. Each week provides a new set of rewards and a new map to play on, so here's what you can expect for the latest rotation.

Steam Deck – release date, price, specs, and benchmarks

Valve is entering the handheld gaming PC market with the Steam Deck, which launches on February 25. Prices start at $399 USD / £349 GBP for the 64GB version, but you can grab a Steam Deck specced with 256GB or 512GB of NVMe storage for $529 USD / £459 GBP and $649 USD / £569 GBP, respectively.

In terms of specs, the Steam Deck is powered by a custom AMD APU built on the Zen 2 microarchitecture. However, this particular chip features RDNA 2 graphics. This is the same microarchitecture used to power team red's best graphics cards, which should help it run everything from indies to the latest AAA games. Storage capacity will vary between models, but they all come equipped with 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

Instead of Windows 11, the Steam Deck comes with Valve's new SteamOS 3. It's a Linux-based OS, but you'll be able to install other operating systems if you'd like. However, Proton compatibility has dramatically improved to the point that you probably won't need to.

Elden Ring's director says don't pick the naked Wretch class

If you've played much of Elden Ring developer FromSoftware's back catalogue, you'll probably be familiar with the games' challenging and dressed-down classes. Dark Souls has the Deprived while Bloodborne has Waste of Skin - both are low-stat options that have you scavenging for your own kit right from the get-go, making them starting classes for the truly determined. It seems Elden Ring will be no different, with its own difficult "naked one", which director Hidetaka Miyazaki reckons isn't the best choice if you're a newbie.

"In general, I'd like new players to feel unpressured and that they can approach the game at their pace," Miyazaki says in a new PlayStation Blog post. "I don't want to enforce any playstyle or particular route because I'd like them to experience that sense of freedom. And I realise that, while we offer games with a high level of challenge, we design them in a way that feels fulfilling to overcome. But I don't want new players to worry or stress about that difficulty too much."

That said, the esteemed director does have some pointers on which class might be the least optimal for those divining into a Soulslike experience for the first time. "As for a starting class, it's entirely up to the player. It's an RPG, and they can approach it however they like and choose whichever looks the coolest to them," Miyazaki says. However, he adds he "would recommend against choosing the naked one (known as the Wretch). As before, it's probably the most difficult starting class!"

Terraria is almost fully optimised for Valve's Steam Deck

Valve's made a huge commitment to its Steam Deck compatibility ahead of next month's release, but a large portion of the responsibility still lies with game developers. Fortunately, Re-Logic is working hard to get Terraria: Journey's End running smoothly on the portable gaming PC, revealing that "optimisations are nearly complete" on its monthly State of the Game blog.

There's no telling when the update will be available to download, but it won't be long until the game gets that shiny verified badge as the developer says it should "be ready well in advance" of the Steam Deck release date in late February. Since it's primarily aimed at enhancing the Steam Deck experience, there isn't much in it for players on other platforms beyond a handful of bug fixes - which is never anything to scoff at, but also nothing to ring home about given how stable the game already is.

This should hopefully scratch the same itch as the PS Vita version, which hasn't received love since 2016 and is missing the Journey's End update.

     Total Warhammer 3 interview:

With less than a month to go until release, Total War developer Creative Assembly has flung aside the curtain on Total War: Warhammer III - which you can pre-order here, coincidentally . That doesn't mean we know everything about the strategy game now, but we've glimpsed enough to understand how much more there is to see. The curtain stretches for miles.

I recently got to play 50 turns of the single-player campaign as both the Daemons of Chaos and Grand Cathay's Miao Ying. Mid-way through my session I'd thrown away most of my prepared questions and vibed my interview with game director Ian Roxburgh and principal writer Andy Hall, who had a lot of fun with the fact that I know enough about Warhammer to make certain assumptions which he, apparently, plans to upend.

You can read my hands-on impressions here and catch up on the headlines regarding Be'lakor, customisable Daemon Princes, the Great Maw, and eight-player co-op multiplayer at those links - like I said, big curtain - but first on the agenda is a new mechanic that's core to the campaign: rifts.

Here's a new look at former Witcher 3 dev's dark fantasy strategy game Gord

Gord is an upcoming dark fantasy strategy game from Polish studio Covenant, which was founded by former Witcher 3 producer Stan Just and announced last year. Drawing on Slavic folklore, the game will feature "developing societies, eerie forbidden lands, and remarkable mythical creatures", as its Steam page teases. Ahead of its arrival sometime this year, there are some new details: a cinematic trailer, a chat with Just about Gord's setting and gameplay, and news that indie game publisher Team17 has partnered with the game.

Team17, which is known for publishing indies like Hell Let Loose, Overcooked, and The Escapists, among others, has announced this week that it'll be working with Covenant to bring Gord to PC. To coincide with the news, the devs have launched a new cinematic teaser trailer called 'The Prayer', which gives us a taste of Gord's world.

A lone figure sits in a night-time forest, praying to the God of the Sun, Daboh, for aid and for his people's souls to be saved. His prayers are soon interrupted by a terrifying, otherwordly figure, though, who seems to be cloaked in shadow and bear a crown that looks like like gnarled tree branches.

The gaming scene is full of new innovations, but it's important to not forget about the parts dwelling within your PC case. Sure, choosing the best RAM for your rig might seem mundane compared to concepts like the Metaverse, but you won't be going on any VR adventures if your machine isn't up to the task. Thankfully, there are great computer component deals out there, and Teamgroup's T-Force Delta RAM currently is 32% off.

Over on Amazon, you can grab $35 off Teamgroup's 16GB T-Force Delta RAM, bringing it down from $109.99 to $72.99. This 3,200MHz kit is perfect for anyone looking to boost their PC's memory, especially since the latest Steam games now require more than ever.

Teamgroup's RAM package also boasts a bold, asymmetrical design and RGB lighting, both of which should help turn your rig into a gaming PC peacock. However, the T-Force Delta kit's aluminium alloy heatsinks aren't just for show, as they'll ensure cooling efficiency to maximise life span and performance.

EVGA E1 includes analogue dials to monitor your RTX 3090 Ti

EVGA has announced plans to release a new prebuilt gaming PC, simply titled the 'E1'. Featuring a bold open air case design in addition to top-of-the-line components, the company believes that it's "taking extreme gaming to the next level by setting a statement with our new gaming rig." If nothing else, it's made us want to immediately mod our own systems with analogue temperature dials.

While EVGA hasn't shared much in the way of specifications, we know it features an EVGA Kingpin water cooled graphics card, which we suspect could be an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 Ti. Vince 'Kingpin' Lucido teased the card earlier this week via a Facebook post, but it's unclear whether it will remain exclusive to the E1.

We'll circle back to the rest of the E1's specs in a moment, but we need to talk about its analogue temperature dials. Whether you plan on engaging in some serious overclocking, or just fancy a novel way of monitoring your system's temps, there's no denying the charm of these gauges. We're so taken with them, in fact, that we'd love to see them sold as a standalone peripheral or in other cases.

Upcoming MMORPG Lost Ark will get three added regions at launch

The Lost Ark release date is fast approaching. Ahead of the MMORPG's arrival in western regions early next month, developer Smilegate RPG and publisher Amazon Games have unveiled a bunch of new features and changes coming with its live launch, which include three new regions to explore, which weren't available during closed beta.

The first of these will take players to the Yorn region of Arkesia. Here, you'll "find yourself headed underground to the home of the Umar race — a group of dwarven people that inhabit the depths below the seemingly barren land", as the devs explain. The Umar people include artisans who are regarded for their craftwork, which is reflected in the intricate architecture found in the region. There'll be new quests, bosses, Chaos dungeons, "and more" to find here. Details are light at the moment, but it sounds like there'll be plenty to sink your teeth into.

The continent of Feiton, meanwhile, is somewhere you might find "a little bit... less than welcoming", the devs tease. During a previous conflict called the Chain War, the lands were poisoned - something that continues to shape the landscape even now. The region is home to a half-human, half-demon people called the Delains, who are ruled under the "careful control" of a powerful organisation of assassins called the Avesta.

FFXIV's first Endwalker raid encounter has now been soloed by a Paladin

The big bad of the Pandaemonium Asphodelos: First Circle raid is having a tough time of it right now. A Final Fantasy XIV player recently soloed Erichthonios with a Warrior, inspiring one using the Paladin job to repeat the trick.

SuperTwoU explains on YouTube that Aka Ada's impressive feat inspired them to see if they could do it with a Paladin. Aside from testing out if they could survive the team stack without using the Hallowed Ground ability, they admit to not doing too much preparation. Rather, they jump in headfirst and "flail around wildly". I mean, hey, it worked, so who is anyone to judge?

The FFXIV player uploaded their run to YouTube, which roughly clocks in at one hour and 20 minutes. It's a fun watch, though. SuperTwoU isn't afraid to laugh at themselves when they make a goof, and they do an excellent job of running you through their thought process. I don't see myself tackling Erichthonios with a Paladin or a Warrior any time soon, but I appreciate the lesson in high-level raiding.

The best Rainbow Six Siege operators

So, you want to know who the best Rainbow Six Siege operators are? This is a very complex shooter - perhaps one of the most intricately designed multiplayer games being played right now. The depth comes from numerous places: the destructible environments, the design of the maps, but primarily from the unique gadgets, stats, and loadouts offered by each of its playable operators. We have been training with the elite troopers in order to find out which operator is the strongest.

Owing to the game's asymmetric multiplayer gameplay, Rainbow Six Siege operators come in two flavours: attackers and defenders. Currently, there are 60+ Rainbow Six Siege operators to unlock and use in the game. New Rainbow Six Siege operators drop with every season, and you can unlock them early buy buying into that season's battle pass, or wait until they're available for general release and use your hard-earned in-game currency. This is earned through completing matches and ticking off daily challenges, so it is good to know which ones to snap up first in order to make collecting the remaining operators even faster.

We update this list of Rainbow Six Siege operators regularly to best reflect the game's live meta, so rest assured these really are Tom Clancy's finest operators and we'll update this guide when the new season rolls around.

The best indie games on PC in 2022

Deciding on the very best indie games on PC is a task that involves some painful exclusion. The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much.

But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking.

So what is our final shortlist of the finest indies around? It's got everything, from puzzle games to narrative wonders, through pixelart games and the most gorgeous, graphically detailed gems.  You're going to want to play each and every one.

Through an entirely unplanned sequence of events, I'm currently playing two big action adventure games that couldn't be less alike. One is God Of War, a big, serious dadventure epic about an emotionally distant father trying his darnedest to connect with his (at times very irritating) son. The other is Kena: Bridge Of Spirits, an altogether more wholesome adventure about a young girl cleansing a lush, forested mountainside from a serious case of bad vibes and helping lost ghosts pass on to the other side.

About the only thing they have in common is that they both have what one might call 'cute' NPC companions. Dad Of War is joined by his eager archer "BOY!" Atreus, while Kena has her gaggle of black, fluffy Rot friends (above, right). According to the widely accepted law of big googly-eyes, I should find the Rot absolutely adorable and thus beyond reproach. Atreus does not have big googly-eyes (they are merely wide and naive), but he is certainly a lot cuter than God Of War's other main companion, a talking disembodied head. And yet. Even though Atreus has now reached that stage where he's doing all his adolescent whining and rebellion and "I know you are, but what am I?" nonsense in the space of about two hours, I would much rather have this sulky pre-teen by my side than the interminable Rot. Let me explain.

In theory, I miss auto scrolling arcade shooters and would love it if they came back. In reality, they come back all the time and I never really click with them because what I really miss is being a child and feeling like almost every game I saw was magical.

I'm pretty bad at them as well, which doesn't help. Mostly though, I became jaded and curmudgeonly at around nine years old, and will never know such naive wonder again.

Still, Hyper Echelon is fun.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. It's a statement I have only briefly put to the test during a rushed weeked in San Antonio, a trip I mostly remember for 1) seeing a roadside billboard that advertised Jesus on one side and massive tits on the other, and 2) making a joke about having a puffy taco "so I guess I should see a doctor!" [finger guns] that fell bone-chillingly flat to a dinner table of American business colleagues.

You know where everything actually is bigger? The past. Anecdotally, the first records of modern golf date back to its banning in 15th century Scotland. "Nay Golf," said parliament. "It's turning the soldiers into fiendish, turf-snorting club-strokers who'd rather say shit like 'Triple Bogey' than batter the English, and we're no having it." RPGolf Legends is not set in 15th century Scotland, but it does take place in a world where golf has been banned. Only you - through the power of bare-bones ARPG combat and a fun but limited golf mini-game - can save the noble sport from ostensible nonexistence.

I say ostensible because, in reality, golf is everywhere. Our heroine Aerin's hometown is called Mulligandale. It has two shops, one of them dedicated entirely to golf. Folk shimmy about in golfwear, talking about golf. Many give out golf-related quests, the rewards for which are usually some form of golfing paraphernalia, often golf balls. The actual golf courses themselves have been sealed off by an ill-defined big villainous, but if you put a translucent barrier around the thing you're trying to crush and still let the people you're attempting to terrorise build their entire society as a monument to it, you're basically asking for a plucky hero to restore the national passtime to glory. This month, we're travelling back to rescue eight games from 2010, and cor, what a good year that was. Too bad almost all of them will end up in the lava bin by the time we're done.

Elden Ring Director Discussed It and FromSoftware Games' Difficulty

There's a new The PlayStation Blog interview with Elden Ring Director and Writer Hidetaka Miyazaki went over the difficulty of both it and FromSoftware games in general. At first, when offering tips for newcomers to the company's games, he suggested people shouldn't worry too much. He noted, "...I realize that while we offer games with a high level of challenge, we design them in a way that feels fulfilling to overcome." However after that, he specifically discussed the difficulty of the company's games and his thoughts about how many people might be able to beat Elden Ring.

Here is the exact response Miyazaki had regarding the difficulty level from The PlayStation Blog.

I feel like our approach to these games, not just Elden Ring, is to design them to encourage the player to overcome adversity. We don't try to force difficulty or make things hard for the sake of it. We want players to use their cunning, study the game, memorize what's happening, and learn from their mistakes. We don't want players to feel like the game is unfairly punishing, but rather that there's a chance to win a difficult encounter and make progress. We understand that Souls-like games are regularly associated with impossible levels of difficulty with high barriers to entry. But we try to design the games to make the cycle of repeatedly trying to overcome these challenges enjoyable in itself. So we hope that with Elden Ring and the new options it provides, it will be a success in that respect.

Miyazaki also said, "In Elden Ring, we have not intentionally tried to lower the game's difficulty, but I think more players will finish it this time." This ties in to Producer Yasuhiro Kitao's estimate that the game, at minimum, will take about 30 hours to beat.

Elden Ring will release for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on February 25, 2022. There will also be a The Overture of Elden Ring primer out digitally on February 3, 2022.

Seven deadly sins origin

A new game is in development based on The Seven Deadly Sins (a.k.a. Nanatsu no Taizai). It'll be an open-world action RPG. Developed by Netmarble, the operators of Lineage 2, its formal title is The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin

Korean gaming outlet Inven posted the announcement trailer on its Youtube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UQJ7lP26G_c&t=1s

The trailer for The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin shows off a large-scale, apparently seamless game world. Both above-ground and underwater areas appear. Characters are shown engaging in combat against large monsters as a team. They also fight through variable weather conditions and at different times of the day. Other characters are seen gathering resources and using special abilities to glide through the air. One portion shows Meliodas summoning Diane from a menu for aid in building a stone bridge. Meliodas then ascends the new bridge and climbs up the rock wall to end the trailer on an expansive vista.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin appears to be related to Netmarble's other Seven Deadly Sins game, The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross. That game, which came out in 2020, is a more traditional turn-based RPG. Origin will feature a new original story and star a new protagonist, Tristan. The nature of the game world will allow players to interact and control other characters from the series too.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin is in development for mobile platforms, PC, and consoles. Netmarble didn't specify a release date or target platforms.

As part of the Aqua Iro in Wonder☆Land concert, Minato Aqua and other Hololive Vtubers appeared to perform some of her most notable songs. A streaming concert ticket is available for 5,000円 (~$43). It also marked the debut of DNN's "I Wanna." Some of the songs she performed were "Dadadada Tenshi," "Discommunication Alien," "Domination! All the World is an Ocean," "I Wanna," and "For the Win."

In addition to the concert merchandise and upcoming game, lots of Minato Aqua figures are either available or on the way. She has her own Nendoroid, which is available now in Japan. There will also be a Aqua Iro Super Dream scale figure. Good Smile Company just announced and shared concept art for it.

genshin impact emojis

miHoYo revealed a new set of Genshin Impact emojis to use on Hoyolab. This time, the Paimon's Paintings XII emojis focus on Liyue characters, with Shenhe and Yun Jin making their first appearances. The Tweet also promises more chibi emojis in the future.

https://twitter.com/GenshinImpact/status/1486911915116924929

There is a total of sixteen new Genshin Impact emojis on Hoyolab, with a wild range of emotions. Four of them are of Shenhe, and four of them are of Yun Jin. These two are the newest characters in the game, debuting in Version 2.4. Additionally, there are two of Zhongli, two of Ningguang, two of Xiao, and two of Guoba. As the Lantern Rite event is underway, it stands to reason why characters from the Liyue region are the focus.

Stickers, icons, and emojis of the various Genshin Impact characters are available for use on Discord, Hoyolab forums, and in-game. In December 2020, miHoYo released a set of winter-themed emojis, while packs of various LINE stickers are available in the messaging app. Of these icons, Paimon's Paintings are a collection of chibi emojis which are available to use on the official forums.

Genshin Impact is available on PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. The Lantern Rite event will last until February 12, 2022. Aside from the normal prizes, you can obtain a free outfit for Ningguang and a Liyue four-star unit of your choice.

Stone ocean converse header

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean and Converse are collaborating on a pair of Jolyne shoes. The collaboration Converse shoes will have the same pattern as Jolyne's outfit, and Jolyne's butterfly also appears as a charm hanging off one of the shoes. The Stone Ocean Converse cost 13,200 JPY ($114.30). Pre-orders on Premium Bandai end on February 20, 2022, and the shoes will come out in March 2023.

Genda will rename Sega arcade centers to GiGO

Genda announced that it has renamed Genda Sega Entertainment to Genda GiGO Entertainment after acquiring 100 percent of the company shares. It also revealed plans to rename all existing Sega arcade centers to GiGO as well.

The company's chairman Nao Kataoka explained on Twitter that GiGO is short for "Get into the Gaming Oasis." Sega's arcade centers in Ikebukuro, Akihabara, and Shinjuku will be the first ones to have their names changed. Other facilities across Japan will follow afterward.

When Genda acquired a majority of Sega Entertainment's shares in December 2020, it only obtained 85.1 percent of the stocks. At that time, Sega owned 14.9 percent, so it still had some say in the company's decision-making processes in 2021. For example, Genda had to retain Sega's name on arcade centers and the Genda Sega Entertainment company.

The latest announcement revealed that Genda purchased the remaining stocks owned by Sega. This means Sega no longer has a hand in the arcade facility management company, as Genda now fully owns it.

Despite the massive name change, GiGO is not an unfamiliar name for Japanese arcade fans. The name appeared on the Sega Ikebukuro GiGO building that closed down in September 2021. When Genda opened a new arcade facility nearby in October 2021, the company simply named it Sega Ikebukuro. In the near future, it will rename the facility to GiGO Ikebukuro.
