Team Fortress 2 community TF2Maps hosts charity creation jam

A Team Fortress 2 charity drive is being held in July by community site TF2Maps in aid of charity Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières). The event is scheduled to run for 72 hours from July 22 - 25, and encourages anyone in the FPS game's community to join in and create TF2-related things in aid of the humanitarian organisation.

The rules are simple - all you have to do to participate is to "make something for or about Team Fortress 2." It can be something in-game or a real-world project, as long as it is related to Valve's free-to-play game. Some examples given are maps, models, or mods that could be used in TF2, as well as "warpaints, animations, videos, paintings, drawings, fan fiction, woodwork, stonework, legwork, homework, and everything else in-between."

TF2Maps asks that anyone participating ensures that they do not work on the project outside of the prescribed hours of July 22 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 5pm GMT to July 25 at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 5pm GMT. The team emphasises that planning in advance is allowed, but that you must not start creating your submission until the event is live. You may also use custom content from other people in your creation, as per TF2's usual rules, as long as they are appropriately credited.

Is Epic teasing a Fortnite Transformers crossover?

A possible Fortnite Transformers crossover event may roll out soon if rumours on the internet are to be believed - and the battle royale game's developer Epic Games is possibly hinting at it too, stretching back to the Collision event that concluded Chapter 3 Season 2.

The speculation regarding a new Fortnite Transformers collaboration kicked off with Epic's Fortnite Status account tweeting "it's Prime time" for the new update, along with the conspicuous capitalisation of 'prime'. While this is more likely referring to the return of Twitch Prime drops, players have noticed further hints towards Transformers.

As leakers such as Shiina noted, Hasbro has a good relationship with Epic - they've done a GI Joe collab in the past - and is currently celebrating the 15th anniversary of the first Michael Bay movie. Furthermore, the Transformers-like truck man sculpture from Fortnite Chapter 1 seems to be making a comeback. According to Fortnite leaker InTheShade, a new mech-like vehicle is being worked on too - which even has its own emotes.

Elden Ring roleplayer keeps Raya Lucaria's lifts running

If you're ever visiting the Academy of Raya Lucaria, keep an eye out for a particularly helpful Elden Ring roleplayer by the name of Lift Mechanic. This industrious player has taken it upon themselves to ensure that people making their way through the open-world game's magical halls don't fall foul of any mechanical failures.

A video shared by Reddit user Ayen_C shows Lift Mechanic's full routine in practice. Summoned in just before the lift up into the academy's main entrance, Lift Mechanic joins the other players in jogging towards the elevator shaft before turning and throwing their arms out, as though telling the others to hold back.

They then proceed to throw some rainbow stones down to warn of their impending works, call in the lift, and get down to business. Inspecting each of the chains in turn, they crouch down to get a better look with their torch and pull out a telescope to peer more closely for any signs of wear and tear.

The quirky Sega Saturn Quake is getting a fan-made PC port

When Quake remastered came out in 2021, it was celebrated for including the Nintendo 64 port for free. However, the FPS game's first console port was for Sega Saturn, boasting new levels and a different graphics engine. Now, fans are trying to bring the Quake Sega Saturn port to PC in all its quirky glory.

Quake was ported to Sega Saturn by Powerslave developer Lobotomy Software in 1997 and had to be reconstructed in the less advanced Powerslave engine, giving the port a unique look and even sprite-based weapons closer to Doom. It also featured four original levels that have never been ported elsewhere.

Now, fans are bringing Sega Saturn Quake to PC as a proper source port using FTEQW. PCGamesN spoke to the project's lead @JaycieErysdren, who explained that she's been working on it since September 2021 with "huge progress" made recently. All the level data can now be "successfully ported from every level in the game" using Blender and the FTEQW source port, with the game's iconic enemies on their way.

Stray partners with cat charities to help real-life strays

Stray developer Blue Twelve Studios just revealed the real-life stray cat that inspired its feline protagonist, and now the cyberpunk game's publisher Annapurna Interactive is partnering with several cat charities to help out real stray cats around the world.

Starfield Easter egg honors the first man and woman in space

The first proper Starfield gameplay trailer released in June at the Xbox Showcase and fans have pored over the footage since then, looking for any clues about Bethesda's RPG game. Now, fans have spotted a Starfield Easter egg that specifically seems to honour the first man and woman in space.

Multiple hidden Starfield Easter eggs have already been discovered by fans in the gameplay footage, such as a possible hint towards the release date, a sinister Dead Space-like secret, and even the infamous sandwich. People have even noticed references to real-life astronauts, such as some of the planet names.

However, fans on Reddit seem to have noticed a more direct appearance of two particularly famous astronauts at around 6:39 in the gameplay trailer. Behind the person in the foreground of the picture above, there are two portraits. These seem to be famous photos of two astronauts - Yuri Gagarin, who became the first man in space in 1961, and Valentina Tereshkova, who became the first woman in space in 1963.

UK gov wants loot box protection for children, considers legislation

A press release from the UK government's Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport (DCMS) calls for videogame companies to increase protections to stop children being able to buy loot boxes in their games. The statement also says that the government "will not hesitate to consider legislation if companies do not bring in sufficient measures to keep players safe."

In July 2020, the UK's House of Lords said that loot boxes should be classified as gambling, and a report from the universities of Plymouth and Wolverhampton in April 2021 called loot boxes "structurally and psychologically akin to gambling." A call for evidence launched by the DCMS in 2020 found that "players who have purchased loot boxes may be more likely to experience gambling, mental health, financial, and problem gaming-related harms."

In addition, the report stated that these risks may be greater for children and young people, leading to the UK government's latest call to make the purchase of loot boxes "unavailable to children and young people unless they are approved by a parent or guardian." Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries says that the government wants to "stop children going on spending sprees online without parental consent."

Cr1tikal increases Halo 2 LASO deathless bounty to $20,000

July 17, 2022: Moistcr1tikal has raised the Halo 2 LASO bounty from USD $5,000 to $20,000, and even offered tips on how to beat it.

Major YouTuber and streamer Charlie 'Cr1tikal' White is offering a bounty to anyone who can beat Halo 2 Anniversary - and has just raised it from $5,000 to a massive $20,000 USD. This is a bit of a tougher challenge for FPS game fans than just beating it, too - it's a Halo 2 no death run, on Legendary difficulty, with nearly all skull modifiers turned on. Which is nearly impossible.

For most of the space game's history, developers have hidden secret skulls around the campaign, right up to Halo Infinite. These skulls contain modifiers that usually make the game a lot tougher - such as no visible HUD or weapons, not regaining shields unless you punch an enemy, and making the Covenant a lot deadlier.

Consequently, a Halo LASO run - Legendary difficulty with all skulls on - is the hardest challenge a Halo player can face. And doing that without dying? Near impossible. Streamer Cr1TiKaL - a.k.a. penguinz0 or Charlie White - challenged the community to do just that in Halo 2 Anniversary by offering a massive cash bounty to anyone who can go through LASO and not die.

Blue Archive Anime

Yostar and Nexon are celebrating 18 months in operation for the mobile RPG Blue Archive. To commemorate the "1.5 Year Anniversary" milestone, animation studio Yostar Pictures created a special Blue Archive anime short. The short stars a number of popular characters from the game's roster having a swimsuit-clad firefight in the middle of a crowded shopping mall.

Check it out below. English subtitles are available via the closed captions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T5wNrdOMrNg

The 9-minute Blue Archive anime short features no less than 23 playable students from the game's roster. On the Japanese are about 81 playable chraracters (not including variants of existing ones). Serika, Nonomi, Hoshino, Shiroko, and Ayane from Abydos High School are seen shopping for a summer outing at the mall. They encounter Izuna, Mimori, Tsubaki, Chise, Shizuko, and Kaede of the Allied Hyakkiyako Academy, and try out some swimsuits. They also encounter students from Gehenna Academy's Prefect Team (Hina, Ako, Chinatsu, and Iori) and Gourmet Research Society (Junko, Izumi, Haruna, and Akari). Even Trinity's Make-Up Work Club (Azusa, Hifumi, Hanako, and Koharu) gets involved once the bullets start flying.

Like the game, the Blue Archive anime short takes place in Kivotos, a city divided into many massive school districts, each ruled by different academies. Each academy is attended by a population of superhuman students bearing halos and firearms. However, students need teachers, and the player character is recruited as Kivotos' only "Sensei". They are appointed head of Schale, the city's newest club, at the behest of the missing President of Kivotos ruling General Student Council. With the President missing, Sensei must call on the assistance of Kivotos' strongest students to tackle the problems and get to the bottom of the mysterious threat to the city.

Blue Archive is available on iOS and Android. Yostar Pictures is also developing an anime series adaptation of Arknights.

yu yu hakusho yusuke header

Takumi Kitamura has been cast as Yusuke Urameshi, the protagonist of the upcoming live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho. Kitamura previously portrayed protagonist Takemichi Hanagaki in the live-action movie of Tokyo Revengers, which was the highest grossing Japanese film in 2021. There has been no information as of yet in regards to the other members of the main four. [Thanks, ANN!]

[gallery columns="1" ids="932273" link="file"]

Comic Natalie has provided a cast interview with Kitamura in regards to his casting as Yusuke in Yu Yu Hakusho. He states that he thought it was a joke and laughed when he found out he got the role. He also notes that Yu Yu Hakusho is a historical work that serves as the root of Japanese pop culture. In regards to the character, Kitamura hints that this adaptation of Yusuke may be darker than the original depiction in the manga.

Netflix first announced the series at the end of December 2020. This came after several other live-action adaptations of classic Japanese anime series, such as Death Note and Cowboy Bebop. Kazutaka Sakamoto (who is also a Netflix content acquisition director) is the show's executive producer. Akira Morii of Wild 7 is producing Yu Yu Hakusho as a member of Robot Communications.

Yoshihiro Togashi, who later wrote Hunter x Hunter, worked on Yu Yu Hakusho from 1990 to 1994. The anime series ran from 1992 to 1995. It follows the story of juvenile delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who dies after he "uncharacteristically" dies after pushing a child out of oncoming traffic. He makes a deal with the Spirit World and comes back to life on the condition that he works for them as a "spirit detective."

The Netflix adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho will air worldwide in December 2023.

Soulframe is open-world, with Elden Ring under 'conversation'

In probably the biggest announcement at Tennocon 2022, Warframe developer Digital Extremes revealed its next game Soulframe - a Studio Ghibli-inspired MMO fantasy game. Now, further details about Soulframe reveal that it'll be an open-world game at launch - and From Software's Elden Ring is "a subject of some conversation."

One of the major announcements at Tennocon was that long-time Warframe director Steve Sinclair was stepping down in favour of Rebecca Ford. PCGamesN spoke with Warframe's new creative director about the open-world The Duviri Paradox expansion, but Sinclair isn't leaving Digital Extremes - instead, he's heading up its new game Soulframe.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Sinclair confirms that Soulframe's hub world will be open, unlike early Warframe. "I'm chasing that 'short session but high immersion' thing where you sign in and you come out of your yurt and you are where you last signed off," the director confirms. "The world feels like it's been going on without you."

You can get Diablo 4 beta access with a permanent flesh mark

If you're looking to get early Diablo 4 beta access, Blizzard is handing it out to those prepared to pay tribute to the devilish RPG game with a permanent mark upon their flesh. Fans who turned up to the first stop on the Diablo Hell's Ink tour to get themselves a free Diablo flash tattoo were also handed a card granting them "early access to an upcoming beta" for the ARPG and a digital copy of the final game.

The Diablo Hell's Ink tour runs from July 16 - September 10, and spans eight locations across America, the UK, Germany, and Australia. Each event only lasts for one day, so if you want to get involved you'll need to make sure that you clear your calendar for it.

Each location features a headlining artist - for the chance to get a custom tattoo from them, you'll have to "share your connection to the Diablo franchise" with the game's official Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram pages along with the #DiabloHellsInk tattoo and the code of the participating city that you're planning to attend. If you don't win a slot, you can still get a Diablo tattoo from one of the shop's other artists on a first-come, first-served basis.

Soulframe is Warframe dev's Studio Ghibli inspired next MMO

Digital Extremes has announced Soulframe, a new MMO inspired by the works of Studio Ghibli that is currently in early development status. The Warframe developer has continually pushed new updates for its RPG game over seven years of live service - storied content, quality of life changes, new ways to play with weapons, additional Warframes, and new mounts. With the development team shifting and Rebecca Ford now the creative director of Warframe, the studio has unveiled its next multiplayer game at TennoCon 2022.

Soulframe, which was initially speculated about after the filing of a trademark by Digital Extremes in May, showcases an entirely new free-to-play action-hybrid MMORPG from the developers of Warframe. "With Soulframe's worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favorites and pull inspiration from the elaborate fantasy worlds that we fell in love with growing up," says Soulframe creative director Geoff Crookes.

The newly announced MMO game draws influence from different fantasy genres and art, but is not solely influenced by western artistry. The works of Hayao Miyazaki alongside other Studio Ghibli projects were mentioned as inspirations for Soulframe's fantastical elements. "Our team is really interested in this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we'll be exploring a lot of those themes through our own lens while playing with ideas of restoration and exploration," Crookes explains.

evangelion water park

With the summer heat rising, it's time to cool off with the Multipurpose Humanoid Decisive Weapon Evangelion Unit-01. The Toei Movie Village theme park has opened up a Neon Genesis Evangelion-themed water park event as of July 16, 2022. The full title of the attraction is "Splash! Evangelion Kyoto Base 2022." It will consist of two Angels hosing guests with water cannons. Participants will use items like "Eva Ponchos" and "A.T.F. Shields" in order to protect themselves from the spray. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gm1a-qs318g

Along with Angels, there will also be a 15-meter tall Evangelion Unit-01 statue present. For those who want some refreshments at the park, Toei Movie Village will offer shaved ice that comes in an appropriately Evangelion-themed cup. It will look like Evangelion Unit-01 forcing its way through an A.T. Field. Each shaved ice will cost 2500 JPY (approximately $18.05).

[gallery columns="2" ids="932267,932268" link="file"]

The Evangelion water park will run at irregular intervals throughout summer. It will be open every weekend from July 16 to September 3, 2022. The exception is July 23 to August 14, in which it will be open every day. You can purchase a rain poncho that resembles Evangelion Unit 01 for 3,480 JPY ($25.15 USD). The kids' size is 2,480 JPY (about $17.90 USD). As for the A.T.F. Shield, it costs 1000 JPY, which is about $7.20 USD.

[gallery columns="2" ids="932269,932270" link="file"]

This summer, Neon Genesis Evangelion is not the only anime series making waves at the Toei Movie Village. It will also hold a Demon Slayer event from July 23 to October 17, 2022. There, visitors will be able to take pictures with locales resembling the Entertainment District from the second season of the show, as well as play games.

The Neon Genesis Evangelion water park at Toei Movie Village will take place on weekends throughout the summer of 2022. Tickets will cost 2,400 JPY for adults, 1,400 JPY for students, and 1200 JPY for children.

The Wolf Warframe hungers, pounces to feast on its enemies

Warframe is about to reach its 50th model type available in-game, as we take a look at the recently announced Wolf Warframe and what its design suggests for the RPG game. Warframes, for those not in the know, are the cohesive barrier worn by the player-controlled Tenno - a suit of biomechanical armour that can also be used as a weapon. Sometimes, specific Warframes can have sentience or make decisions of their own.

Some Warframes are the past remnants of prestigious warriors from long ago, or bringers of hope - with each acting as an existing legend with its own mythology and lore. Others come from more unique backgrounds, such as Xaku - the game's first non-binary Warframe - being a construct fused together of a few different Warframes such that each separate part no longer holds its former identity, instead joining with the other frames to create an entirely new being.

The game's creative director Rebecca Ford likens the concept of Warframes to that of the popular anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. The Warframe and the Tenno Operator sharing "such an important relationship" resembles one of the central themes throughout the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise - that symbiotic relationship between a pilot and their suit.

"With Soulframe's worldbuilding and thematic elements, we are really looking to go back to our childhood favourites like Never Ending Story and those elaborate fantasy worlds," says Soulframe creative director Geoff Crookes.

The newly announced MMO game draws influence from different fantasy genres and art, but is not solely influenced by western artistry. The works of Hayao Miyazaki alongside other Studio Ghibli projects are key inspirations for Soulframe's fantastical elements. "Our team has a fond love for Miyazaki and Princess Mononoke where there is this idea of nature and humanity colliding and we'll be exploring a lot of themes around nature, restoration, and exploration in this new title," Crookes explains.

Warframe devs reveal Veilbreaker expansion, all about Kahl

Warframe is getting an all-new single-player expansion, due to release before the Duviri Paradox open-world expansion, as revealed by developer Digital Extremes. The Warframe Veilbreaker expansion will see the return of the Grineer Kahl-175 from the New War, with Rebecca Ford, Warframe's creative director, explaining how DE wanted to explore Kahl's story more deeply.

"We knew Kahl needed an open ending because players really wanted to see more of him", Ford says. "And then when we got all the reactions to Kahl we were, like, 'Hell yeah! Let's figure out Kahl's story!'"

Warframe Duviri Paradox is a shining light in a colourless world

Warframe Duviri Paradox gameplay has finally been shown this year at TennoCon after several years since its initial surrealist, paradoxical trailer back in 2019. The main focus is on the newly introduced Drifter, the New War Tenno Operator who wasn't saved during the Zariman incident. If you have played New War to completion, this will make much more sense, as it tells the story of a new Tenno Operator that has a very different set of experiences.

     Ex-EA Unity CEO apologises for

Unity CEO John Riccitiello has apologised for "crude" comments made in an interview toward developers who don't implement monetisation options in their games - to a tremendous outcry from the industry. "I am listening and I will do better," Riccitiello says.

In a recent interview with Pocket Gamer, the Unity CEO - formerly CEO at EA - called developers who don't implement monetisation options early in their games "the most beautiful and pure, brilliant people" but also "some of the biggest f***ing idiots."

As can be expected, this did not go down well with the gaming community, including developers behind Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, Gotham Knights, Celeste, Selaco, and EA's Star Wars Jedi Survivor.

There's no way to get around it. I have to, in the process of constructing this post, write the name "Slopper Johnson: Graviton Agent." I don't like the feel of it in my mouth or in my brain, but as a game, Slopper Johnson is too interesting to ignore. It's a roguelike in which you construct your actions during combat by wiring together modules as you would with a modular synthesizer.

Stranger of Paradise expansion

The first expansion for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is coming on July 20, 2022, and it's time for Jack to take on the Warrior of Light. Square Enix and Team Ninja revealed a detailed  Stranger of Paradise expansion trailer on July 15th. Titled Trials of the Dragon King,  the expansion will add a new series of jobs, a new weapon type, and a new set of encounters to use them in.

Check out the trailer below.

Note that some of the scenes shown may constitute spoilers for Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

Trials of the Dragon King is the first of three planned Stranger of Paradise expansions. The two others are titled Wanderer of the Rift and Different Future, though they don't have release windows or details as of yet. One wrinkle is that Square Enix isn't selling the expansions separately. Thusly, those interested will need to pick up the Season Pass, which will unlock all three missions as they release.

The Trials of the Dragon King trailer shows a matchup against the Warrior of Light. Here the Warrior is dressed in a suit of armor close to that of his appearance in Dissidia Final Fantasy. That design was in turn inspired by Yoshitaka Amano's original Final Fantasy concept art. The trailer also shows matches against Bahamut, as Jack and the party pursue their deal.

The Stranger of Paradise expansion will also add Staves to the playable weapon list. They're  striking weapons with a wide attack sweeps. The new Pilgrim job uses skills to keep enemies in range, and an "assault hook" job action that can bring players to the enemy position or draw them in for a combo. The Evoker can call forth spirits that attack independently or perform special functions. The Summoner can summon and take control of Bahamut for attacks.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The Trials of the Dragon King expansion launches on July 20, 2022.

Gundam Battle Alliance Intro

SD Gundam Battle Alliance is just past a month from its August 25, 2022 release date, and excitement is building. To commemorate reaching 50,000 followers on the official Twitter account, Bandai Namco uploaded the SD Gundam Battle Alliance intro movie to its YouTube channel.

Check it out below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DaCVRJ1NReU

The intro video emphasizes the multiversal nature of Battle Alliance's premise. Teams of Gundams from across multiple series take on similarly grouped villains. For example, the RX-78-2, Zeta, and ZZ Gundam face off against the Zeong, Quebeley, and The O. The G-Self and Turn A defend against the Turn X, while Reborns Gundam and 00 Gundam fight on the sidelines. Master Gundam calls in several Destroy Gundams to eliminate the God Gundam/Destiny Gundam duo. Wing Gundam and Unicorn Gundam take on the Neo Zeong and Epyon. The SD Gundam Battle Alliance intro also previews the game's large-scale boss battles, where players confront mega-sized enemies. These include the Big Zam, Shamblo, Devil Gundam, Apsaras III, and Calamity War Mobile Armor.

In addition to the intro, the SD Gundam Battle Alliance website also received an update. In addition to confirming more canon Gundam mobile suit designs, it detailed some of the game-original characters and suits. The player character is assisted by Yuno Astarte and Sakura Slash, who act as navigators. The game-original Gundam Latreia is piloted by Hermes Mercury, a talented programmer who stands in opposition to the player.

Bandai Namco also shared some SD Gundam Battle Alliance gameplay earlier in the week. Teams of three players got together in co-op to  face off against large foes from Gundam: The 08th MS Team and Gundam Unicorn.

SD Gundam Battle Alliance will release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on August 25, 2022. The Switch version release date is unconfirmed.
