Bethesda may have just saved Fallout 76 – and also added a new glitch

Bethesda might have finally rescued Fallout 76, as a new update for the online RPG game takes away one of its most frustrating issues and balancing problems, making it easier for newer players to actually compete in PvP, and get the benefit from quests and challenges. Nevertheless, in typical style, Bethesda's update also introduces a new bug – if you log into Fallout 76 right now, you might find that the ammo for one of your guns has vanished, or that you're suddenly unable to move.

Of course, you need to manually travel to each Floo Flame location before you unlock it, but once you've seen them all, you can dart between the Hogwarts Legacy common rooms and Hogsmeade, from the Crossed Wands duelling club to the Forbidden Forest, or between individual Gobstone locations in no time.

The best indie games on PC 2023

Deciding on the very best indie games on PC is a task that involves some painful exclusion. The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much.

But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking.

I was absolutely elated when Square Enix announced a new Final Fantasy Theatrhythm game during the Tokyo Game Show last year, as there's been a Final Fantasy music game shaped hole in my life for the best part of a decade. I played the pair of Theatrhythm 3DS games to absolute death back in the day, and was hoping that Squeenix's newfound PC love-in would mean I'd be able to write about it non-stop when Theatrhythm Final Bar Line comes out on February 16th. Alas, that joy was immediately curtailed when I saw FBL wasn't, in fact, coming to PC at all, and would remain a Switch and PS4-only game for the foreseeable future. But that's okay, because YouTuber Gloomhonk has created the perfect antidote to my Theatrhythm woes in the form of their brilliant Trombone Champ rendition of FF VII's Those Who Fight Further. Microsoft have reported worldwide technical issues with multiple Microsoft services this morning, including Minecraft, Xbox Live, Teams, Outlook and other 365 products. In a Twitter thread from Microsoft's 365 Status account, they said the problems have been caused by "networking configuration issues", and that a recent network change had been rolled back. It's hoped this will solve the access problems people have faced trying to use these services this morning, but lingering issues may still be kicking about.

Blue Protocol Network Test

As promised, Bandai Namco's Blue Protocol development team delivered more information about the recently delayed Blue Protocol Network Test. In a brief livestream and via a post on the official site, the team said that the test is expected to be held in late March 2023. It was originally scheduled to happen on January 14, 2023.

According to the post, the team is still investigating the issues that caused them to decide to postpone the test in the first place. Though they didn't get into extensive detail about the problems, they know what causes them and how to fix them. What remains to implement and check the solution. That takes time, which explains the length of the Blue Protocol network test delay. The team apologized for not being able to detail a more specific schedule for the test, but promised an update in late February 2023.

During the broadcast itself, the team did explain one of the more persistent issues affecting the network test schedule. In summary, previous tests and internal checks revealed issues that have to do with the way the game manages player load across the different servers that make up the game world.

Blue Protocol uses an "auto-scaling" system to manage network resources. It allocates these resources dynamically across the various servers. Different groups of servers serve different areas of the game, but can be assigned resources as needed. For example, areas with many players present in real time will be allocated additional resources to reduce instances of network lag, and so on. The problems that emerged are related to the "scaling logic", the automated process that determines how these resources are allocated and re-allocated. The issues were affecting play within parties, causing players to disappear or drop out when trying to load into missions or other areas together. It also affected issues like chat messages being delayed or failing to send properly. As such, the Blue Protocol network test is being delayed to adjust the auto-scaling system and its scaling logic to ensure players have a smoother experience.

Blue Protocol is in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. It is targeted for release on PC in Spring 2023 in Japan, with other regions and platforms to follow through 2023. The network test will occur in late March 2023, with more information on the exact schedule expected in late February 2023.

ichiban kuji hololive

A second Hololive Bandai ichiban kuji lottery will appear starting April 22, 2023. It will cost 780 JPY per spin and, as usual, you will be able to find the lottery in locations like convenience stores and anime goods shops. Prizes include merchandise of Shirakami Fubuki, Tokino Sora, and Sakura Miko. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Usually, Bandai ranks ichiban kuji prizes with an alphabetical system. So the A Prize is the grand prize, and the further down you go, the smaller the prize is. However, just like last time, there is no particular order for the prizes. Bandai has divided them based on the Hololive member or the goods type.

There are no pictures yet for the Hololive Ichiban Kuji lottery. But the prizes available are:

  • Tokino Sora Prize
  • Shirakami Fubuki Prize
  • Sakura Miko Prize
  • Nekomata Okayu Prize
  • Shiranui Flare Prize
  • Tsunomaki Watame Prize
  • Shishiro Botan Prize
  • Sakamata Chloe Prize
  • Kazama Iroha Prize
  • Framed Stand Prize
  • Rubber Charm Prize
  • Last One Prize: Hololive illustration booklet
  • Double Chance Campaign: Hololive illustration booklet

For the prizes that are a VTuber's name, you get a visual board of it. Last time, they were cloth tapestries. But this time, they are likely prints.

The second Hololive Ichiban Kuji will be available in Japan and online from April 22, 2023.

Good Smile Company has opened up pre-orders for a Pop Up Parade figure of Makima from Chainsaw Man.  Pre-orders are open from January 24 to February 23, 2023. For customers in Japan, she will cost 4800 JPY and will ship out in June 2023. As for those in North America, the Makima figure will cost $34.99 and her shipment window will be August 2023.

For this figure, Makima is wearing her usual outfit of a dress shirt, pants, and a tie. She also has a playful winking expression, with a finger in front of her face. Since this is a Pop Up Parade figure, she is not very big. She stands at about 17 to 18 centimeters in height, and you cannot adjust her pose.

Here are some more pictures of the Chainsaw Man Pop Up Parade Makima figure:

These Are the Worst Fire Emblem Engage Characters

Okay, so we already got the best, brightest, and most useful Fire Emblem Engage characters out of the way, so lets talk about the ones with some of the worst potential and least helpful tendencies. Not every person in your army is going to be a winner! Some will fall behind as you go through maps. Maybe deployment limitations meant they weren't as attractive options. Perhaps their skills held them back. Maybe one of them turned out to be Fire Emblem Engage's Jagen. Let's talk about the characters who didn't end up becoming shining stars.

Editor's Note: There are spoilers for Fire Emblem Engage in this character list. Also, it is a matter of "your mileage may vary," as some of these units could end up being useful for you!

Worst Fire Emblem Engage Characters Units Anna

Anna

Okay. Here's the issue with Anna. Yes, you don't have many axe-wielding characters at the time she's introduced. That's a perk in her favor. But she's a bit frail compared to other characters, axe hit is notorious for not being the best, and you really only want her around when you need to make money. Even then, her Make a Killing unique skill is triggered by her luck stat and dependent on her being the one to strike the killing blow. The extra 500G isn't worth it.

Really, it's better you stay safe at home on the Somniel, kid.

Boucheron

Boucheron

Boucheron is someone who has the misfortune of being one of your first recruits. Lance users can be great, but once you start needing to diversify and pull in more units, you'll want a lance-user with a unique class, like Timerra. Or a lance-user who has increased movement and a unique class, like Alfred. Or a lance-user who can also really take a hit, like Louis.

His Moved to Tears unique skill also relies on having a lot of other allies around who can take part in a Chain Attack he kicked off, which means only certain strategies are best for him.

Worst Fire Emblem Engage Characters Units Etie

Etie

Etie isn't a terrible archer, but she has the misfortune of being in the same game as the far superior Alcryst and Fogado. Compared to two characters who get unique Advanced classes and have far better starting skills, she… doesn't exactly stack up. Especially since you probably won't need more than two archers in any map.

Also, it isn't that her Energized unique skill isn't bad, but it only gives her +2 Str whenever she uses a healing item. Sorry, Etie.

Framme

Framme

Oh, Framme, imagine the things you could have done if Jean didn't exist. But he does, we get to recruit him not long after meeting you, and he is better than you in every possible way. You aren't a great attacker. Since all we'd be using you for is healing, we really don't need more than one early on. Also, you have a hyper-specific unique skill that only makes you useful if you are directly next to Alear the whole battle. Listen, we appreciate you exist, and we will have room for you until we get a second healer, but once Citrinne and her Generosity comes along, we're done.

These Are the Worst Fire Emblem Engage Characters Lindon

Lindon

Lindon joins far too late. By chapter 18, you're established. You know who your best and favorite mages and healers are. He's a good Sage, to be clear. His stats are good when you get him! His unique skill, Weapon Insight, means you can give him lower level weapons and still have him be viable, because he'll get +20 Crit whenever his weapon isn't as good as an opponent's.

I just… didn't… have… room for him when I played. I imagine others will feel the same, given when he joins.

Vander

Vander

Okay. In every Fire Emblem game, there is a Jagen. This is a character who is an Advanced class unit at the very beginning of the game and is basically your ace-in-the-hole for the first few chapters while characters level up. Ideally, you want to save them for an extreme circumstance, so your lower level characters with lots of room to grow can get experience and develop. This also means as their stat growths lead to them getting stronger, the Jagen gets left behind.

Vander is Fire Emblem Engage's Jagen. Worse, he's like Framme in that he's only useful if he is right next to Alear, as Alabaster Duty only grants a +5 Crit bonus to both when they fight alongside one another. (And even then, +5 Crit is nothing in this game. I don't get out of bed for +5 Crit.)

Thanks for the help in chapters 1-4, Vander!

Fire Emblem Engage is available for the Nintendo Switch.
