The best indie games on PC 2023

Deciding on the very best indie games on PC is a task that involves some painful exclusion. The great indie boom triggered by digital distribution a decade ago turned out to be more of a Big Bang, firing small-team development into a plethora of directions that now defy simple categorisation. The sheer volume is intimidating, so we have plenty to choose from when compiling our list of the best indie games. Perhaps too much.

But we should take stock, from time to time, to appreciate everything publisher-less development has given us. Some of the games listed below were built in a weekend by first-time coders, while others were crafted by former triple-A creators who've instilled their independent work with the same technical standards. They barely have anything in common but a healthy dose of idiosyncrasy and ideas that make Steam worth spelunking and make our list of the best PC games.

Doom remade as an ultra-hard roguelike, playable now for free

As we approach the 30th anniversary of Doom (yep, we're getting old) it's staggering just how much life and variety remains in the classic id Software FPS game. Three decades since its release, passionate players continue to tweak, tune, and totally transform the definitive PC shooter, making it feel like a completely modern FPS, or in some case, a new game entirely. Available now and totally free, a recent Doom mod achieves the latter, converting id's 1993 masterpiece into an extremely tough, randomised roguelike, similar to contemporary hits like Dead Cells, Darkest Dungeon, and Into the Breach.

Best Warzone 2 battle rifle for Season 2 Reloaded

Looking for the best Warzone 2 battle rifle? While assault rifles are the most popular weapons in Call of Duty games, battle rifles offer an alternative option that sacrifices fire rate and mobility for firepower and bullet velocity; an elegant weapon for a more civilised age.

Picking the best Warzone 2 battle rifle out of the four is no mean feat. The most competitively viable weapons in the free PC game tend to be very easy to run and gun with, and battle rifles really force you to take a more passive approach, but if you can do that then they can be surprisingly effective. If you're looking for a gun that mixes the damage potential of the best Warzone 2 AR with the stability of a great Warzone 2 marksman rifle, then this may be the gun type for you.

Diablo 4 beta dungeons criticised as repetitive and

The Diablo 4 beta has reached the end of its early access phase, with the Blizzard RPG game receiving extremely positive responses for its combat and art and design work, despite issues with queueing and the 316719 error code. However, as we approach the next Diablo 4 beta release date, the new dungeons in D4 face criticism for being repetitive and using "cookie cutter" procedural design, with players complaining of similar paths and layouts, and less dungeon variety than Diablo 2.

The best dragon games on PC 2023

Looking for a list of the best dragon games on PC? Since long before the days of Dungeons and Dragons, and before Tolkein became the poster boy of fantasy, dragons have been the most fearsome and majestic creatures of myth. Usually, they breathe fire and hoard gold, other times they become companions and deign to be ridden, and more often than not they get mistaken for wyverns.

PC games, and the best RPGs in particular, are naturally swarming with dragons and dragon-like creatures, both as friends and foes. We've collected some of the best dragon games on PC like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim where you can encounter, battle, or befriend a dragon including entries from multiplayer games or MMORPGs. Given that dragons can't often be taken down by a single adventurer (looking at you, Dragonborn) it makes sense that plenty of games that look to tackle dragons do so at the epic proportions of hundreds of players joining together to defeat them. Here are the best dragon games you'll want to try if you want to take on these mythical monsters.

Best Warzone 2 sniper rifle for Season 2 Reloaded

No top loadout is complete without the best Warzone 2 sniper rifle. The best snipers are crucial if you're going to dominate across the long, open expanses offered by the new map. It's no secret that Al Mazrah is the biggest and most ambitious map to come to the free game so far, so preparing appropriate custom loadouts will be a game-changer, and hopefully keep you out of the gulag.

The best Warzone 2 sniper is the MCPR-300. All snipers, by definition, have excellent range and deal high damage, so the best stats to improve when building your rifle are handling, mobility, and fire rate. Unlike Warzone 1, one-shot kills aren't always possible in the free PC game, and even a close-range headshot won't drop an enemy if they have three plates of armour equipped, so being faster makes all the difference. Here's everything you need to know about the best Warzone 2 sniper.

Father forgive me, for I have spent the weekend conversing with the damned. No, I haven't gone all Alan Moore and grimoired up a demonic pal to go gallivanting around the big Tescos with. That is next weekend. Instead, I've been playing Diablo 4's beta, closed to all except an elite cadre of press, pre-orderers, and, uh, chicken enthusiasts. And so, axe in hand, I set forth, confident that whoever I found myself temporarily adventuring with would at least be fortified with adequate protein to wield rippling gains against the lords of hell.

Mouse-clicking connoisseurs of a certain age may remember a time when the name Blizzard was synonymous with the most gorgeously impressive CGI cutscenes your tiny mind had ever been blown by, and while Diablo 4's lengthy introduction comes at a time where there's far too much widespread talent for any one studio to claim that crown, it is still a goshdarn treat to take in. Not just technically, either. This chronicle of a cursed expedition is a mission statement for Diablo's new (old) tone, and it sets the scene for things to come spectacularly - even if that tone straddles the line between gripping and noticeably self-concious about past accusations of cartooniness.

diablo iv graphics card

According to some comments on the Blizzard forums, Diablo IV is causing some 3080 cards to literally burn and die. Most players who have reported the same have RTX 3080 Ti, which implies that the issue has to do with the graphics card. Players noted that a certain cutscene with flowers and a snowy landscape tends to be the problem location.

While some players have noted that their graphics cards are fine, they did report that the above cutscene caused issues for their computer. They got around it by forcibly resetting the PC or skipping the cutscene, which implies that the issue has to do with Diablo IV and not just the graphics cards. Some other players with 3080 graphics cards have reported little issues. They have suggested that Diablo IV is not the problem. Rather, their computers had pre-existing issues and they happened to brick while playing Diablo IV.

While Diablo IV is not out yet, the early-access beta is. Aside from the above issues with the graphics, some players weren't even able to play the game. Fans complained about long queue times over the weekend. Blizzard asked players to remain in the queue so as to not reset their timers, though some players had complained about waiting for hours.

Diablo IV is in development and will come out on June 6, 2023 on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC.

atelier ryza 3 interview characters ending 1

The story in Atelier Ryza is drawing to a close, even though an anime is about to offer a new take on the tale. People spent four years watching Ryza and her friends grow up since the original game's 2019 debut. Now, we're seeing where the characters' journeys will bring them with Atelier Ryza 3 acting as an ending. To help understand what to expect, Siliconera caught up with Gust Executive Officer Junzo Hosoi to talk about the game.

Jenni Lada: When did Atelier Ryza 3 development begin and did you always knew it would become a trilogy?

Junzo Hosoi: The planning of Atelier Ryza 3 began right after the release of Atelier Ryza 2. When we began drafting the idea of Atelier Ryza, I always had the thought of wanting the Secret series to conclude as a trilogy.

However, whether it actually became a two-part series or would continue as a trilogy was something we thought to decide upon only after seeing the players reactions to the game.

Given we've followed many of the characters in Atelier Ryza 3 for years now and seen them grown, how did that affect development for each one's personal story arcs?

Hosoi: Each of the characters have grown physically and emotionally throughout the games (Atelier Ryza, Atelier Ryza 2, and Atelier Ryza 3). For example, Ryza encounters something known as alchemy, and by deepening her knowledge about it she is able to face the problems facing her island, and also Klaudia, Lent and Tao begin to decide on each of their own futures.

In a way, "the future of the friends" illustrates the conclusion of the trilogy, so I hope everyone will play the game and watch what choices they make.

atelier ryza 3 interview characters ending 2
What led to Bos becoming a playable character in Atelier Ryza 3, and did fan-demand help influence it?

Hosoi: Bos become a playable character from fan's reactions and the feelings of the development team came into alignment. He is a popular character so there were talks internally to see if we could make him a
playable character, but when considering the production progress of new characters and where he would fit in, there were very difficult aspects to it.

In terms of the story, we thought that the story would need to
have Bos included for a reason, but since we wanted Atelier Ryza 2 to carry on from Atelier Ryza, we thought that having the members who deepened their bonds in the first adventure, the four characters of Ryza, Lent, Tao and Klaudia, would be the ones to head to the capital, and then have an adventure with the friends they meet there.

So because of that, we decided to show Bos in Atelier Ryza 3.

Which character's story in Atelier Ryza 3 did you think offered the best progression and why?

Hosoi: It's hard to choose just one character as the best progression. Beginning with Ryza, I think that the stories of all of her and all of her friends on the island have taken a shape that we are very satisfied with.

They are characters that I have been together with for many years, so I have a very strong emotions towards them.

Will we see paired endings in Atelier Ryza 3 or different endings based on players' choices?

Hosoi: There is a single ending for the major story. Having said that, there are world quests that unfold and unique to each region, episodes for each character and many other elements that can be enjoyed in addition to the main story.

Atelier Ryza 3 experienced a delay just ahead of launch. What did the last few weeks of development look like in a situation like this?

Hosoi: The game consists of the largest volume of material in the Atelier series, such as the number of party members and size of the field, so we focused on bushing up the stability and optimization of the game.

Also, we made some improvements to the usability, so there are adjustments that make it a better game for everyone to get their hands on. We deeply apologize for having everyone wait longer for the game's release.

atelier ryza 3 interview characters ending
Will Ryza's story definitively wrap up in this installment, or could we see her return?

Hosoi: Atelier Ryza 3 is the finale for Ryza's story.

With the original Atelier Ryza, we saw character-focused add-ons. The sequel involved extra areas. What kinds of DLC are you hoping to create for Atelier Ryza 3?

Hosoi: We've announced that there will be costumes including swimsuits, additional areas, recipe expansion packs, BGM packs and more, so we are planning to have content that will let everyone enjoy the game for a lot longer.

What would you like to do next in the Atelier series? Is there any kind of new mechanic or element you'd like to pursue in the future?

Hosoi: I think it might be good to introduce a major system outside of synthesis.

Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key will come to the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC on March 23, 2023 in Japan and March 24, 2023 worldwide.

Resident Evil 4 anime

An animated commercial for Capcom's upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake remakes a classic of its own. The new Resident Evil 4 anime promo is a brief clip starring Leon and the Ganados. Called Resident Evil Masterpiece Theater, it evokes the animation style and aesthetic of old classical anime series, like Nippon Animation's World Masterpiece Theater or the films of Studio Ghibli.

Check out episode one, Leon and the Mysterious Village:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lppo5cNxrhk

In the clip, Leon attempts to ask a few villagers after Ashley's whereabouts, but receives the culture shock of his life (and death). Besides the Ganados, Ashley, and Leon, a few other characters from Resident Evil 4 show up in the brief anime clip. These include the Colmillos tentacle-dog, a cultist waving an axe from their neck-tentacles, the claw-wielding Garrador villain, and even the fame Chainsaw Man. The episode even ends with a cheeky sponsor message using the format familiar to many people watching the TV broadcasts of anime episodes.

The Resident Evil 4 anime clip was produced by Nippon Animation itself, and recalls a number of stylistic cues from World Masterpiece Theater. These include the ornate title card, the title itself - Bio-Meisaku Gekijou (Bio-Masterpiece Theater) in Japanese - and the rounded and kid-friendly character designs. World Masterpiece Theater was a staple anime series of the Showa era and early Heisei era in Japan, running continuously from 1969 through 1997 (with a revival from 2007 to 2009). Produced by studio Mushi Production and then by Nippon Animation, the series adapted famous books or stories once a year. The works adapted include stories like Tom Sawyer, Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Princess Sarah, and Heidi. Famed anime creators like Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata worked on the show, as well.

The Resident Evil 4 remake launches for PS4, Ps5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 24, 2023.

akai haato hiatus

Hololive Prodcution VTuber Haato Akai (also known as Haachama) will be suspending her activities temporarily. The announcement comes via a post on her official account. According to the post, which is attributed to her manager, the decision for Haato Akai to go on hiatus was made due to the performer's "poor physical condition."

https://twitter.com/akaihaato/status/1637650167426961408

The announcement of Haato Akai going on hiatus comes only days after she appeared during the Hololive 4th fes live concert, which took place on March 18, 2023. She was originally supposed to perform at the concert, as well as participate during the Hololive Super Expo 2023 stage show. However, after an announcement on her Twitter account, the stage show appearance was canceled so Haato could "put her all" into the concert. Her health was a similarly motivating factor for that decision. In both cases responses to the announcement were generally supportive, with fans encouraging Haato to recover and rest as needed.

You can see Haato performing her song "BUTA" during the 4th fes. concert, at about 1 hour, 9 minutes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Of2b9eBHFS4&t=4165s

Haato Akai first debuted YouTube in 2018 as part of the "1st generation" Hololive VTubers. Her contemporaries include Hololive performers like Fubuki Shirakami, Matsuri Natsuiro, Mel Yozora, and Aki Rosenthal. Over the last two years, she's gone on hiatus from her regular streaming activity several times. She took breaks for various reasons, including her mental and physical health. A six-week break from June 2022 mentioned "academic" reasons as well. Prior to the current hiatus, Haato last took a break in late December 2022, due to a COVID-19 infection. She returned to streaming on January 21, 2023.

Haato Akai is set to go on hiatus from March 2022. The exact timing of her break was not detailed. Her archived videos and streams are available via her YouTube channel.
