Despite the odd glimmer of joy, like better-than-expected performance on its lowest system requirements, much about playing Jedi: Survivor on Windows suggests it could have used a little more time in the bacta tank. Sluggishness and stuttering are problems on higher-end graphics cards, even before adding the strain of ray tracing effects, and FSR upscaling often fails to deliver a significant performance boost. |

The game only just come out, but Honkai: Star Rail has already surpassed 20 million downloads. For reference, the game officially released on April 26, 2023. Honkai: Star Rail is the newest turn-based mobile and PC game from HoYoVerse, who is the creator of Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3rd. [Thanks, Daniel "ZhugeEX" Ahmad!] In a Weibo post, HoYoVerse thanked all of the Trailblazers for their support of the game. It will hand out ten Star Rail Special Passes on April 30, 2023 as a show of gratitude. That will also be the date of a celebration event for the launch of the game. Though Genshin Impact has been HoYoVerse's global juggernaut, Honkai: Star Rail is hot on its heels. According to the same post, Honkai: Star Rail is currently the most-downloaded and best-selling iOS game on the charts. It also had 30 million pre-registrations, which is more than how many Genshin Impact had. However, it is possible that many of these players did not know of HoYoVerse prior to Genshin Impact, which may have affected those numbers for Star Rail. Honkai: Star Rail is a spin-off of Honkai Impact 3rd. Though it features familiar faces (such as Himeko, Bronya, and Seele), they are technically different characters. It also has a turn-based combat as opposed to the more action-oriented system that was present in both Honkai Impact 3rd and Genshin Impact. Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on mobile devices and Windows PC. It will come out on the PS4 and PS5 some time in the future. Monolith Soft released a new interview with two of their event animators talking about the difference between cutscenes and scripted events, continuity between scenes and gameplay in video games, and the ins and outs of their job. Miura is one of the animators in charge of cutscenes, while Katsuta works with scripted events. While it varies from project to project, Monolith Soft distinguished two types of events in most of the company's games. The first one of this are cutscenes. These use elaborate camera angles, particular character direction, and motion capture. The second one is scripted events. They are made by using premade stock character animations and movements, and combining them with specialized tools. Both Monolith Soft creatives also talked about maintaining continuity between cutscenes and gameplay. Katsuta said that if a technique or move is not usable at a certain part of the game, they need to work around that. Or if the clothes get dirty during a cutscene, they also need to communicate that properly so that when players regain control these elements remain consistent. Katsuta added that they also have to work around the possibility of the player only ever watching a cutscene or event once, so they need to make sure to craft it so that it is as clear as possible. In cases where a cutscene is immediately followed by a scripted event, sometimes they will use a particular animation from the previous cutscene for the beginning of the event, so that the transition from cutscene to scripted event looks natural. As a reminder, Monolith Soft's latest title is Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which is available for the Nintendo Switch. Its DLC expansion, Future Redeemed, released on April 25, 2023. Though the story is fairly simple, the dialog and wording are grandiose, like you're reading a high fantasy novel. I thought that was really cool, though it was a tad annoying how the same dialog boxes would pop up every single time you entered a dungeon. [caption id="attachment_960741" align="aligncenter" width="768"] For better or for worse, Labyrinth of Zangetsu plays a lot closer to a retro game than one that came out in 2023. Its first-person perspective when traversing through the labyrinths felt a lot like Wizardry. In its turn-based battle system, you queue up all of the actions ou want to use first before anyone moves. You also have limited spell slots, which means that you can only cast a certain number of spells per tier before your wizards and clerics are useless. Thankfully, there are no random encounters, and you can sneak through the mists of enemies if you crouch. So even though the game doesn't teleport you back to town after completing a labyrinth, there's little danger of some random enemy mob ruining your day. The prices for everything are kind of crazy for how much Sen you get. You know how brutal late stage capitalism is for the average worker? It's like that in Labyrinth of Zangetsu, especially if you're trying to heal up after a particularly difficult encounter. I got around 2000 Sen for my troubles after clearing out the first labyrinth, but the process of sealing away the Ink corrupted all of my Conscripts. The church healed me up, but it takes a fee for every individual I purify. So I was left with maybe 300 Sen to buy some new weapons or equipment. You know, for a city that's counting on me to save its butt, you'd figure the merchants and church would be a little more charitable. Despite my complaints about how evil the shogunate and temple are (what else is new?), I do enjoy the difficulty level of Labyrinth of Zangetsu. It's not hard to the point of frustration, but it's not so easy that the whole game is a cakewalk. The best thing about the game is, of course, the sumi-e art style. Sumi-e is Japanese ink painting, which neatly ties the game's look to its story. That's super cool! The contrast setting is perfect. Everything is easy to see without straining my eyes even though all the labyrinths are in black and white. I do admit that sometimes when I sped through the dungeons, I felt a little queasy. But just don't run around like a headless chicken. [caption id="attachment_960743" align="aligncenter" width="768"] The one thing that I found a little difficult is that the game couldn't fully hold my attention. I've played dungeon crawlers before but for some reason. My conclusion is that the encounters felt really shallow and fast compared to others in the genre I've experienced. There were no major or obvious differences between the races, and the battles were all so fast that it lacked substance. I don't really mean that it needs fancy animations. Rather, the fact that you choose your entire party's actions per turn could get a little stale. Unless you're up against a huge horde or a boss, you don't really need to change up your strategy every turn. So battles were a lot of just mashing the A button and watching the text scroll on the side of the screen. Labyrinth of Zangetsu is a very well-balanced dungeon crawler that weaves its narrative right into its aesthetic. Despite how impressively modern the game looks, there were a lot of factors that made it a lot more reminiscent of a bygone era. Aside from how little strategy the battles required, it also had an incredibly monotonous soundtrack. Personally, it was a little difficult to get into the game because of these issues. This game is definitely one that dungeon crawler fans should play, but it is also one that I could only recommend to fans of the genre. What makes Labyrinth of Zangetsu stand out is in its sumi-e art style. So once the novelty of that wears off, it feels as hollow as a fountain pen that's run dry.
