Diablo 4 reserves the right to take away your unfair items

Following a Diablo 4 fiasco that saw a handful of players grabbing the game's most powerful gear using a clever loot trick, Blizzard says it "may need to take action" if certain Diablo 4 bugs or exploits in the future have more dramatic impact. If you were one of the lucky few to grab a Diablo 4 Harlequin Crest in the RPG game during the few hours it was available, however, you'll be pleased to know that Blizzard isn't wielding its powers quite yet.

Diablo 4's frustrating hitches and stutters should be fixed soon

Diablo 4 is a game I can - and do - play for hours at a time. It's very easy to sink into that zen state as you're farming for gear, grinding XP, and bursting floods of demons like they're juicy, blood-filled candy. Unfortunately, if you enjoy a longer Diablo 4 session, you might find that the RPG game begins to struggle the more time you keep playing. Fortunately, Blizzard says that a fix for this annoying issue is on the way, and it should arrive before the Diablo 4 season 1 start date.

Crymachina Preview PS5

Despite the similar names and aesthetics, Crymachina feels like its own beast, instead of a direct successor to FuRyu's Crystar. At Anime Expo 2023, I had the chance to check this game out and it turned out to be one of the most surprisingly fun games I enjoyed at the event.

Crymachina features an intriguing post-apocalyptic storyline about a girl who wakes up as a machine in a dark world. She must fight to become a "real human." The premise is odd and the brief story elements I saw in the preview were interesting, but I won't dare spoil them here.

[caption id="attachment_971703" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Crymachina Preview PS5 Image via NIS America[/caption]

The bulk of my PS5 preview involved basically an entire tutorial. I had the chance to run around the linear map, learning how to jump, dash, attack, and the like. Though it was more of a tutorial-style preview, I appreciated the overall cyberpunk-like style and frenetic action gameplay.

In many ways, Crymachina feels like it is diving into the Nier: Automata side of action RPGs. The movement is incredibly fast, with the game responding well to the player's dashes and guards. I liked how I was able to zip around the battlefield with ease, while laying on my own swift attacks on foes.

The combat itself is fairly straightforward, too, letting the player use a mix of normal attacks, heavy ones, some skills, and ranged attacks. But with the impressive speed and rate at which you can string up these attacks, it helped the game to feel fun and just deep enough to play in a thrilling way that I didn't experience at all with its similarly named predecessor.

It helps, too, that the game has some unique quirks to it, such as an awakening mode that the player is able to activate at a certain point in combat. This mode lets the robot girls go essentially Super Saiyan and they are much more powerful in this state, while also automatically dodging enemy attacks.

Speaking of dodging attacks, the boss battle that capped off the preview felt very Nier-like in its own right. There were familiar red glowing ranged attacks that the boss launched at me that I would have to jump over or dodge through before going all out with my attacks. It was a decently long enough fight that didn't drag on too long or be too short, either.

It was a bit unfortunate that the preview only featured a tutorial segment of the game, even during the boss section, but I at least got a nice feel of how the combat works across the board. I see a lot of potential in its gameplay, much more than a couple of the other action-packed titles I previewed at Anime Expo.

And then there is the story side. This seems to be a heavily character-driven game with uniquely-written and well-designed machine girls that it follows. If Crymachina puts its story at the forefront in an interesting way, unlike Crystar, it could end up complementing the epic action gameplay well. If this ends up being the case, I would go so far as to say that it could very well be a sleeper hit release this year. I know that it is on my radar now after playing it.

Crymachina will release on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC on October 24, 2023.

Oshi no Ko Anime Prioritizes Aqua and Ruby

The first season of the Oshi no Ko anime adaptation is done and, as anyone who also followed the manga may know, it proceeded a little differently. Namely, the pacing was a bit different. Basically the first volume was covered in its first episode. But considering the nature of the medium and the focus of this telling, it feels appropriate and like it benefits this version of the story.

Editor's Note: There are spoilers for first episode of the Oshi no Ko anime adaptation, however there are no exact spoilers for any other episodes.

[caption id="attachment_971412" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Oshi no Ko Anime Prioritizes Aqua and Ruby Image via Sentai Filmworks[/caption]
The most obvious design decision comes from the fact that the entirety of Ai's portion of the story and all of Aqua and Ruby's early life is reduced to a single episode in the Oshi no Ko anime adaptation. It basically speedruns through its early story. As the first volume of the manga was basically dedicated to Ai and the twins' early life, the pacing set a different sort of tone. The start of the series ended up being more about Ai and establishing her. Here's the choice means this is about Aqua and Ruby instead. The second episode picks up right as Aqua and Ruby are high schoolers. She's desperate to attempt to become an idol like Ai. Aqua is still trying to find Ai's killer by making his way through the entertainment industry. Right from the start, the viewer is drawn to the two of them, rather than their mother.

This choice also means that some of the focus is pulled away from Aqua. In the early parts of the manga, it can feel at times as though he is the main character, and Ruby is a supporting lead. Because of the adaptation's decision to speed things up a bit, it also makes things a bit more fair. We're seeing her journey to become an idol proceed at a faster pace. Due to the way things proceeded in the manga, it felt like Aqua got a jump start on his goals first due to his working with Director Taishi Gotanda, getting the job on Sweet Today, and being cast in the reality dating show. In a way, I feel it helps benefit the story. It allows us to better compare what we know about her mother Ai and watch her rise a little more swiftly. The nature of a manga means you have the luxury of more time to build things up, while an anime needs to adjust its pacing to account for the wealth of information and the audience's attention.
[caption id="attachment_971413" align="alignnone" width="1200"]Oshi no Ko Anime Prioritizes Aqua and Ruby image via Sentai Filmworks[/caption]
The Oshi no Ko anime's pacing doesn't just benefit Aqua and Ruby, however. It works in Kana, Akane, and Mem-cho's favor as well. For the first two volumes of the manga, Kana is the only other "younger" character of note, though she and the other two play larger roles in the story. This means in the first season we already get to see Kana's dedication and what she went through in her journey to remain a relevant star, the sacrifices Mem-cho made to attempt to get attention, and the struggles Akane deals with from harassment. It allows for a more well-rounded view at the entertainment industry, even if some of the manga's details are lost, for the sake of a show that covers more bases.

It's an approach that works for the anime adaptation of Oshi no Ko for many reasons. Aqua and Ruby are the focal points, after all, as is their journey to become famous. While the manga's tone is able to prioritize certain characters at certain times to allow the reader to build relationships with them, the anime feels designed to showcase the twin and their personal and professional journey. As such, the decisions to focus on certain elements and omit extra attention from others ensures their current affairs and connections to other characters are at the forefront. Aqua and Ruby are important in every telling in Oshi no Ko, it just makes sure it happens faster and the division of attention feels a little more equal early on.

The first season of the Oshi no Ko anime is streaming on HIDIVE, and the second will appear there as well. Yen Press is handling the localization of the manga.
