Starfield is the death of videogames as we know them

Starfield is a gigantic, choice and customization-driven Bethesda RPG game, and a true successor to the likes of The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Skyrim. The promise of Starfield is that, more than any videogame ever made, you can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone - boundless opportunities await, in a universe designed to allow for any of your preferences and decisions. But there is another side to Starfield. What it proposes, that you may do what you want and the game will facilitate and accept this (within some parameters), represents how mainstream videogames, over the past 15 years, have become increasingly banal, empty, and without any type of vision. With Starfield, the mainstream videogame, as a cultural artifact, has reached its nexus point. The archetype of the triple-A game has to change or accept artistic oblivion.

Cult of the Lamb Taken Off Sale

Cult of the Lamb could be removed from sale on January 1, 2024, according to developer Massive Monster. This is due to changes in fees from using the Unity Engine, which the game built on.

Massive Monster made the announcement that it will be "deleting" Cult of the Lamb as of January 1, 2024. This is because the game is built on the Unity Engine, which will see the introduction of a new install fee. This fee will require developers to pay Unity a fixed price for each install of the game.

A similar sort statement was issued by the publisher Devolver Digital. In a post on the social media site formerly known as Twitter, the company advised developers to mention the engine they're using when pitching the title. While not explicitly stated, it seems it could affect if the company will be interested in publishing games built in Unity going forward.

Cult of the Lamb isn't the only game whose developers have expressed frustration in Unity's decision. Among Us developer Innersloth confirmed it is looking into porting the game to a different engine. Aggro Crab, currently working on the undersea Soulslike Another Crab's Treasure, called on Unity to reverse the stance in their typical foul-mouthed fashion. VR onboarding platform SideQuest VR confirmed that it will not tolerate the personal data of their users being used for this purpose.

Cult of the Lamb is available now for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It may be removed from sale on January 1, 2024.

Genshin Impact SUI/HAN Icewind Suite

HoYoVerse collaborated with Chinese figure skating duo Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, known together as SUI/HAN, to produce a video inspired by the Icewind Suite boss encounter in Genshin Impact. The video features SUI/HAN performing in the arena where the Icewind Suite encounter takes place, accompanied by the 'Dirge of Coppelia' variant of the theme music.

The Icewind Suite is a boss encounter in Genshin Impact where players fight the figure skating robots Coppelia and Coppelius, located in the Court of Fontaine region. There are two versions of the fight, Dirge of Coppelia and Nemesis of Coppelius, each with its own rewards and variant on the theme music.

SUI/HAN are a professional figure skating team that have represented China at the Olympic Games in 2018 and 2022. They have won a bevy of accolades over their career, including Gold and Silver Olympic medals, 2 World Championship Gold medals, and 3 World Junior Championship Gold medals.

You can watch the full video below:

Unity Install Fee Changes

Developers of games using the Unity Engine will have to pay a fee for each install from January. This decision has angered developers across the industry, forcing Unity to clarify the company's stance and future policies. [Thanks, Axios!]

The new Unity pricing plan is requiring developers to pay a fee for every install of a game built using the engine. This is a fixed fee per install, charged after a developer reaches a threshold of income per year and number of lifetime installs. This fee decreases for developer making their game under a Pro or Enterprise subscription, meaning the burden of costs seemingly fall on smaller developers.

When the new policy was first announced, there was initial confusion over what Unity considered an installation. Early on, developers reported that each time a user installs a game would incur a fee. This would mean that a single purchased copy installed on two devices would be subject to two charges. Demos were also claimed to count as installs, as would downloads through subscription services such as Xbox Game Pass or PlayStation Plus.

This would have a huge impact on the games industry due to how many games are built using the engine. Unity has been used by indie developers of all shapes and sizes, but it can also be found in games as big as Genshin Impact and Pokemon Go.

Unsurprisingly, developers have not been happy with this decision. This has resulted in Unity issuing clarifications to their new pricing plan, in a FAQ on their website. Charges for multiple installs have been dropped after developers felt that this could be abused by malicious users. Demos no longer count, although if a demo is a full game download with locked off content, it will. Game Pass downloads will still count, but the burden of the cost will be passed to Microsoft instead.

This has failed to placate developers, however. Some indie developers who have used Unity have talked about pulling their games from sale, including Cult of the Lamb developer Massive Monster.

Unity stated that the new install fee model will start on January 1, 2024.

Demon Slayer: Sweep the Board Switch Board Game Launching Worldwide

Sega announced the Demon Slayer: Sweep the Board Nintendo Switch board game will appear worldwide and not just in Japan. Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mezase! Saikyou Taishi was originally announced on September 10, 2023. However, at the time only a Japanese version appeared. Now we know it will appear in every region when 2024 rolls around.

In Demon Slayer: Sweep the Board, players will use various characters from the series and send them around boards throughout the game based on places from the manga and anime. So far, Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, Zenitsu, and the nine Hashira are confirmed as playable characters. As you "explore" places like Asakusa by spinning, you can trigger minigames and face demons. The winner ends up becoming the strongest Demon Slayer in the Corps.

The English language website for the game is already live. However, it is primarily acting as a placeholder at the moment. It doesn't show any information about the title yet. However, the Japanese trailer is available and offers an idea of what to expect from the Mario Party-like game.

Fate Grand Order iOS 17 compatibility

Lasengle made an announcement regarding iOS 17 compatibility for Fate/Grand Order. The company said that FGO is compatible with iOS 11 and later versions of the operating system. However, they are in the process of confirming if the game will be compatible with the latest iOS 17 and iPad OS 17 update.

As a result of this, there is a possibility that the Fate/Grand Order app may not launch properly after updating the Apple hardware to its latest version. Lasengle also confirmed that definite support for iOS 17 and iPad OS 17 will be implemented in a future update to the game.

Lasengle advised users to refrain from updating their Apple devices until the planned update rolls out in order to avoid any complications when booting Fate/Grand Order. As a reminder, the public release of iOS 17 is September 18, 2023. At the time of writing, there is no confirmation on when Lasengle plans to release the iOS 17 compatibility update.

In other FGO news, Lasengle recently revealed that the popular mobile gacha game had achieved a worldwide revenue of $7 billion / ¥1 trillion yen by August 15, 2023.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on iOS and Android mobile devices. iOS 17 support for the game is still unclear, but a definite support update for the game will appear in the future.

Genshin Impact Quality of Life Adjustments Include One-Click Expeditions

HoYoVerse released a new Developers Discussion discussing Genshin Impact one-click Expeditions, Adventure Encounters, and other quality of life changes. Some of these will roll out as soon as 4.1, which is expected to launch at the end of September 2023.

The Adventure Encounters will be a part of Genshin Impact as of 4.1. This feature will give people Encounter Points for actions like quests, exploration, material gathering, and event participation to earn rewards instead of doing Daily Commissions. (You can also do them alongside Daily Commissions to earn the "cap.") This will unlock if you hit AR 35 or finish Archon Quest Chapter 2, Act 3 "A New Star Approaches."

The one-click Expeditions will appear alongside some other quality of life changes after Genshin Impact 4.1. When applied, it will affect not only the daily expeditions, but also activities like cooking or forging. This would mean someone wouldn't need to find a blacksmith or cooking station after time passed. Additional updates that will appear alongside it will make it easier to sift through enemies or add materials via smart add and level up/ascend both Artifacts and weapons.

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC. The 4.1 Special Program will air on September 15, 2023.

MamaYuyu Manga

Shonen Jump's newest manga release is MamaYuyu, and is sitting at the top of Viz Media's "What's hot this week" list. It follows the story of a demon lord and hero in a world where the two races have just recently begun living together. The first chapter was just released, and here's what happened in it.

Editor's Note: There rest of the article contains spoilers for the MamaYuyu manga through the end of chapter 1

MamaYuyu opens with us meeting our two main characters: Mamama, the demon lord, and Corleo, the hero. Both the demon lord and hero are reborn when the last one dies and they are known by markings on their hands. The world they live in is enjoying a relatively new era of peace. The last war between the hero and demon lord ended when the last hero Halohalo gave his life to usher in a time of coexistence between humans and demons. Things seem to be going well with both species seemingly finding it normal now.

Corleo however, is having trouble finding his purpose. He keeps the confusion hidden, but he finds it difficult to figure out what exactly he can do as the hero in times of peace. Mamama doesn't really understand what's going on with him as she doesn't really take the time to understand his point of view.

Corleo is called away as a hero from another world has appeared in his. This new hero, Evan All Green, has trouble accepting a world where demons and humans coexist. He nearly attacks Mamama as she enters, due to the marking on her hand. Evan warns that if he was sent here by the demon lord of his world, that the demon lord itself won't be far behind. The demons worry that having two heroes in one world will end in the destruction of their world, so they put Evan in a cell for the time being. Evan accepts and says that if they let him defeat the demon lord from his world, he will let them kill him.

Corleo, inspired by the words of a "true" hero, goes to visit Evan in his cell. Evan reveals that he has a power called "sigil sorcery" that lets him perform magic, and that he's surprised it doesn't exist in Corleo's world. Using sigil sorcery, Evan transports them both to a wooded area and proposes that they chat while sparring. Although Corleo has had no training, Evan remarks that he is good. Corleo asks Evan what being a hero means, but Evan, ending the fight, doesn't give him an answer. Just telling him that he would have to find his own path.

When Corleo returns, he stops a bunch of kids from bullying another and Mamama reprimands him for doing something that could start a fight and challenge the peace. Just then, Evan transports Corleo to a black void telling him that the demon lord from his world is coming. The demon lord from Evan's world is a strange creature with features from many different species. As terrifying as this nightmare is, Evan remarks that it's smaller than he expected. Corleo though is dying just being in the presence of the demon lord. Evan easily subdues it and confines it into a small area. Evan then reveals that he has brought Corleo here to kill him and take his position as the hero of this world. He reveals that his old world is no longer habitable and that going back there would mean death. As Evan is asking Corleo what it means to be a hero, the demon lord from his world draws on the power of Mamama and regenerates behind him. Corleo manages one last push and throws himself between Evan and the demon lord sacrificing himself. He finally decided that being a hero meant being strong and fighting against their foe.

Corleo comes to with Mamama and Evan standing over him. Moved by his actions, Evan is giving his life force to Corleo. He tells him that he has killed indiscriminately and isn't fit to be a hero. That's where chapter 1 ends.

MamaYuyu is available to read on both VIZ and MangaPlus. Chapter 2 will be releasing on September 18, 2023.

Square Enix Investors Unhappy games

Investors expressed concern about quality control for games within Square Enix. The news comes after disappointing sales for both Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, causing a $2 billion drop in the company's value on the stock market. [Thanks, Bloomberg!]

Poor investor confidence in Square Enix games is being blamed on a number of factors. The release of Final Fantasy XVI failed to meet investor expectations, and their concern increased following the financial report announcing that the company was facing reduced profits.

The release of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis also seemingly failed to meet investor expectations too, despite an announcement that the game reached 5 million downloads. The company's habit of releasing mobile games, which they then shut down after a year, has been cited as causing a lack of confidence in fans. Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights and Echoes of Mana were mentioned as examples of this.

Investors are blaming a lack of quality control for games within Square Enix. One Tokyo-based developer cited Marvel's Avengers, Forspoken, and The DioField Chronicle as past examples of poor-quality releases. Employees and contractors for the publisher expressed frustration with many projects being handed to a single producer. This often leads to projects lacking proper documentation and frequent changes to project goals.

Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu attempted to reassure investors by confirming a change in direction. He said he intends for the company to focus on big-budget projects with less outsourcing. However, investors feel that until internal practices are changed to address the concerns of developers, this won't be enough to improve their fortunes.

Square Enix released a new optional clothing option in the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store. However, it might look a little familiar. People can now buy a FFXIV Iceheart's Attire for $12, which resembles a dyed version of the Direwolf Robe of Casting.

When someone gets Iceheart's Attire, they get four items. These are the Iceheart Robe, Iceheart Armlets, Iceheart Bottoms, and Iceheart Thighboots. The goal is to look like Ysayle, heretic of the Holy See, and the outfit isn't locked to a specific race or gender.

Here's a closer look at it:

Since this is an optional, paid clothing item, the FFXIV Iceheart's Attire doesn't have the same restrictions as the Direwolf Robe of Casting. That in-game item can only be worn by caster characters who fall into magical DPS classes like Arcanist, Black Mage, Blue Mage, Red Mage, Thaumaturge, and Summoner.

If someone is looking to get the Direwolf Robe of Casting, you will need Wolf Marks earned from PVP activities like Crystalline Conflict. If you visit the Mark Quartermaster at Wolves' Den Pier (X:4.5, Y:6.0) when you have 1,000 Wolf Marks, you can get it.

Square Enix often releases extra clothing like this in the Final Fantasy XIV Online Store. Some past items include Educand's Attire or Alisaie's Attire.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and the Iceheart's Attire is in the Online Store now.

Can Poltchageist Be ShinyAmong the brand new Pokémon added to Scarlet and Violet with the Teal Mask DLC is Poltchageist and its evolution Sinistcha. They are two ghost and grass Pokémon with a matcha tea look. Even though they share all the same mechanics as Sinistea and Polteageist, such as the evolution having two forms, the two are completely separate Pokémon. Since we're discussing new Pokémon, a natural thought to have is what about shiny forms. Can Poltchageist be Shiny? Can you find a shiny Poltchageist in the Teal Mask DLC? Yes, you absolutely can! Poltchageist is a regular and ordinary Pokémon. It has no reason to be shiny locked like some legendaries can be. Using the sandwich shiny hunting method as usual works just fine to try and shiny hunt for one, though I would recommend Ghost over Grass because other Grass types are around the area. Ghost helps narrow it down more. You can find Poltchageist in bamboo groves all day, of which there are several in the area of the map between Mossui To...
