Can you play Payday 3 solo?

September 22, 2023 If you're here because of Payday 3 server issues, it might not help. Thanks to Payday 3's always-online system, even invite-only matchmaking may be suffering.

Does Payday 3 have a solo mode? The Payday is all about heisting, and if there's one thing you need in a heist, it's a team. In Payday 3, the playable cast consists of six members, some you might recognize, others you won't. But what about if you want to crack on with a heist on your own?

Naturally, you're always going to be heisting with others in Payday 3. Without them, you'd be overrun by the police in no time, even with the best Payday 3 weapons. That said, if you don't play well with others, or Payday 3 servers are down, you might have the option to team up with AI teammates to get the job done. Here's how to do just that as you work through the Payday 3 heists, stick it to the man, and rake in all that cash.

Is Payday 3 matchmaking down? Current server status

September 22, 2023: It seems players are having trouble with matchmaking once again. There has been no official word on this yet, but we're keeping an eye on the situation.

Are Payday 3 servers down? The third installment in the Payday series went straight to the top of the Steam best sellers chart on release day, but its immediate success came with a downside as servers were slammed, matchmaking crashed, and error codes started popping up. While developer Starbreeze has been open with communication and quick to fix issues, there may still be a rocky road ahead.

For most multiplayer games, server issues come with the territory. When too many people try to play the game at once, sometimes those servers just can't hack it. Payday 3 is no different, and too many heisters spoil the… heist. Or something. In fact, since Payday 3 is an 'always online' co-op game, there's no real way to get around it. If you're having issues, here's the current lowdown on whether Payday 3 matchmaking is down right now.

Starfield seamless space travel is finally here

Seamless travel between planets is one of the most desired - and sorely missing - features in Starfield. Though it's technically possible, if you want to fly organically between planets in the same system without going into the menus, it takes hours upon hours of real time. Starfield is at its best when you lose yourself in its visuals, its atmosphere, and its serene, cosmic pace. As it stands, jumping in and out of the Starmap every time you want to travel breaks up the journey - that wonderful sense of traveling that you get in Skyrim, Fallout, and the rest of the Elder Scrolls series, is rarer in Starfield without seamless flying. But now, Starfield seamless travel is possible thanks to a new, pioneering mod.

Mortal Kombat 1 Invasion Mode explained

How does the Mortal Kombat 1 Invasion Mode work? Well, you'd be forgiven for being a bit confused, as it acts as a sort of RPG/board game hybrid that aims to compliment the main story showcased in the main campaign. In fact, Invasion Mode pulls from the rich history of the Mortal Kombat series, specifically the various (and often wacky) mini-games that were offered up in previous games.

If you're looking to jump into the Mortal Kombat 1 Invasion Mode, just know that it's easily the most unique fighting game mode this year, in a year that's absolutely packed with them. It's this, the MK1 gear system, and the new Kameo fighters mechanic that really help to set Mortal Kombat 1 apart from its peers. Here's what you need to know about MK1 Invasion Mode, including a look at how seasonal credits work, and how long a season of Invasion Mode lasts.

Baldur's Gate 3 romance and sex explained

How does Baldur's Gate 3 romance work? Love is in the air in BG3, and you can spend a lot of time romancing your companions and some NPCs, too. Every character you can seduce in Baldur's Gate 3 is different, and you'll have to get to know them and understand what they like and dislike if you're hoping to build a relationship. Here's what you'll need to do to quite literally charm the pants off of every character.

As we've explained in our Baldur's Gate 3 review, we love BG3, especially knowing that Halsin will open up all kinds of doors if you're into bears, and all bear-love-related experiences. We'll let you decide if this makes the Druid the best BG3 class. Whichever of the classes or BG3 races you choose though, you of course don't have to become romantically involved with anyone. If one of the BG3 companions does take your fancy though, here's everything you need to know about Baldur's Gate 3 romance and sex.

     Best Starfield settings for PC

What are the best Starfield settings? Now that we've spent some time acting like actual astronauts parading around space, performing a maintenance check of your Starfield settings will save you from running into any adventure-ending crashes. Thankfully, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to get this Bethesda RPG running with out-of-this-world performance and visuals to match.

Before heading out on interplanetary voyages, take a moment and come back to down earth to make sure your PC meets the Starfield system requirements, as you may be heading on a fruitless adventure. It's also worth noting that, unlike the console versions of the game, Starfield fps aren't arbitrarily capped and will vary depending on the power of your system and which Starfield settings you opt for.

In the Mortal Kombat series, it's not enough for you to defeat your opponent, you have to go above and beyond to ensure your opponent knows you've destroyed them. Sure, you could simply jab them to death, but that wouldn't be much fun, would it?

Unlike Mortal Kombat 1 fatalities, which give players a huge window to activate an elaborate animation, brutalities need to be considered before you can perform them. My goodness, what a close thing. Fading Afternoon is a game of excellent vibes as you stroll around the city living your faintly sad life. It's also an incredibly cool 2D beat 'em up that is, at its best, comfortably the best I can think of. But the boundaries between the two are too frustrating to make it the legend it ought to be.

It's a sequel to The Friends Of Ringo Ishikawa, a game I didn't really vibe with. FA is much improved, a sort of pared down Yakuza game about beating rival gangsters up in between story bits about an ageing Maruyama trying to get the band back together after leaving prison and apparently not caring that he's dying. I do recommend it, but be prepared for some friction.

Malenia, Blade of Miquella, is a menace. Even among Elden Ring's cast of bastard-hard bosses, the Goddess of Rot distinguishes herself as an ender of lives, a relentless steel tempest that has shredded the most prepared and dextrous of adventurers. She's also been beaten, rather soundly, by a man using only his mouth.

Or, to be more precise, a QuadStick FPS, a specialised game controller comprised of a mouth-operated joystick and several 'sip and puff' switches. It's the favoured tool of professional streamer and Guinness World Record holder Rocky "RockyNoHands" Stoutenburgh, who in 2022 used it to become the first quadriplegic Elden Ring player to claim Malenia's scalp. This was a win for a QuadStick as well: a showcase of how adaptive hardware and clever controller design could make games more accessible than ever, enabling players with disabilities to match and exceed the heroics of their able-bodied peers. And yet, there's little sense – among disabled players, advocacy groups, or even controller manufacturers – that accessible hardware is entering its golden age. While major breakthroughs have been made, high prices and commercial concerns still carry the threat of willing, eager players being left behind.

The polished-up 2.0 update for Cyberpunk 2077 is out now, ahead of its Phantom Liberty expansion on September 26th. I've been trying out both, partly to see if the 2.0 newly raised hardware requirement of SSD storage is a warning worth heeding.

Hard lines against hard drive installations are new to PC games, but it was only a couple of weeks ago when Starfield showed the dangers of crossing them. Broken audio, regular freeze-ups, load times so long you could measure them with a calendar... an SSD really is the only way to play Starfield, and it sounded like Cyberpunk 2077 would follow suit. "We advise against running the game on an HDD (or on a SD card on Steam Deck) due to lower bandwidth which may cause new content to not stream properly," reads CD Projekt Red's 2.0 patch notes. That's us told.

It's been a clear decade since the last entry in this co-op crimeathon FPS series, so I was interested to play Payday 3. Payday is exactly the sort of online multiplayer I can get behind: PvE with clear but theoretically malleable goals (theft!). But although compared to Crime Boss: Rockay City it's a crushing 60st monster truck tyre, Payday 3 isn't really reinventing the Payday 2 wheel. In some respects you might think it's rolling backwards, and while dedicated Payday 2 players may well switch over to the current gen iteration, you get the sense they'll be complaining about things the whole time.

FFVII Rebirth Vincent Yuffie

In a recent interview, FFVII Rebirth Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Creative Director Tetsuya Nomura talked about characters Yuffie Kisaragi and Vincent Valentine. In the original Final Fantasy VII, Yuffie and Vincent were optional party members. However, in the upcoming FFVII Rebirth and the third part of the trilogy project, they will be featured as main mandatory party members. [Thanks, Game Spark!]

When asked about the involvement of Vincent and Yuffie in the story of FFVII Rebirth, Hamaguchi said:

"In the original game, there were some characters who were not required to join in the story. But in this new game, we wanted to properly depict their relationships, so they will definitely appear and be involved in the script. There are also many situations depicting the bonds between everyone in the party, so I'm sure fans will be pleased."

Meanwhile, Tetsuya Nomura responded with the following statement:

"Yuffie and Vincent, who were not mandatory party members for a variety of reasons, are now confirmed as main companions. Both character's presence in the original game was toned down, and being able to depict them as part of the main crew added depth to their relationships."

A hint of the two characters inclusion in the main party was Yuffie's expanded role in Episode Intermission, which appeared in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for the PS5 and PC. Her new involvement in the Midgar episode of FFVII Rebirth gave the character a deeper motivation to join Avalanche's members in stopping Shinra and Sephiroth.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is coming out for the PlayStation 5 on February 29, 2024. The period of exclusivity ends on May 29, 2024.

New FFVII Rebirth Minigame Is Queen's Blood Card Game

Square Enix released an official interview with Final Fantasy VII RebirthDirector Naoki Hamaguchi. It went over multiple new and returning elements. For example, in addition to bringing up vehicles like the Buggy, segway like Wheelie, and Tiny Bronco plane, it also introduced the new FFVII Rebirth card game minigame Queen's Blood.

There are no screenshots showing what Queen's Blood looks like in FFVII Rebirth yet, however Hamaguchi referred to the card game minigame as his favorite. He noted that it will feature its own storyline tied to it, which sound like it could be similar to the Triple Triad option in FFVIII or Fort Condor one in the FFVII Rebirth Intermission DLC. Hamaguchi noted more competitors and the story will come up as you play more of the game.

As for the vehicles in FFVII Rebirth, the Buggy the party acquires after the Gold Saucer and Corel Prison segments, the Costa Del Sol Wheelie segway, and the Tiny Bronco plane all came up. Hamaguchi noted modern desert and military vehicles and the original game's design influenced the Buggy. The Wheelie will be tied to an in-game activity that involves getting riding on them for distances. As for the Tiny Bronco, it will be around and able to be used for short distances.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024, with the exclusivity arrangement ending on May 29, 2024.

Star Ocean The Second Story R Nintendo Switch Preview Prologue Demo

Star Ocean The Second Story was one of the first games I ever played on the PSP. After working a job in high school a little over a decade ago, I saved up enough cash to get a the handheld with a few games, including the second entry in this series I hadn't previously touched. My newfound JRPG spirit felt this game calling to me, and I enjoyed it. Now, it's a chance to return on new platforms, with a demo offering a first taste of the game.

The story of Claude C. Kenny and Rena Lanford was a decent one, even if it didn't quite hook me in the ways I hoped. Having played the PSP version all through the way through to the end from Claude's perspective, I was marginally optimistic about the upcoming remake since the game was enjoyable but didn't feel too special to me at the time. After playing Star Ocean The Second Story R for a few hours on Nintendo Switch, I can confidently say that this is one of the biggest surprises of the year for me. The prologue demo lets players experience up to three hours of the starting game, including three towns, two dungeons, and a couple of bosses. The best part? Your save carries over when the full release happens.

Since I played from Claude's perspective the first time around, I used this opportunity to check out Rena's point of view. This, coupled with the incredibly detailed remake environments, created an experience that legitimately felt almost entirely new to me. Despite some familiarity with the characters, there is enough distance and freshness to this remake that you could almost tell me it's a brand new game in the series and I'd believe you.

For starters, there is the absolutely stunning visual design of this game. While not quite HD-2D in the vein of Octopath Traveler II and the like, it has this oddly beautiful blend of remade 2D sprite characters on top of a fully 3D and visually-arresting world. There is such rich detail in all of the towns, dungeons, forests, and locations you visit in this demo.

This modern 3D visual style creates such a unique juxtaposition with the nostalgic and intentionally old-school character designs. It helps, too, that the 2D portrait art used sometimes in cutscenes is much richer than the ones in the PSP version. I just wished they were used more often in the trial.

I could go on for days about how tremendous this art style looks in the early hours, including some of the best lighting I've seen in a game. The colors looked terrific on my Nintendo Switch OLED screen and it rivals the recent Square Enix games I also loved visually, such as the aforementioned Octopath Traveler II and Triangle Strategy.

When it comes to the gameplay, this is where a bit of the simplicity from the original game remains. Star Ocean The Second Story R features a pretty untouched gameplay system from my time with it so far, with mostly the same hack-and-slash action gameplay as before. The game wasn't too hard in the opening hours, usually seeing me mashing the same attack button repeatedly outside of the occasional healing art.

So far, this game doesn't do anything too deep gameplay-wise and that goes for the dungeons as well. The opening dungeons are rather straightforward, with a couple of branching paths that lead to treasure, optional enemies, and the like. Even still, battles go by so fast with the tactics you can give to party members that I actually appreciated the more fluid and simplistic nature.

This allowed me to spend more time exploring the world map, going from town to town, and seeing the world in this newfound way. I barely remember the story, too, so the transition to Rena's perspective offered plot points that were surprising to me and did just enough to reel me in for the full release.

Even though I only played this game a little over a decade ago, I've never experienced a remake like this where I played the previous form and the new version almost feels like a brand new title. This has me so excited to continue following the storyline of the lost space guy Claude and his elf-like friend Rena in stopping a monstrous magical globe for a second time. This could be a real treat for both familiar existing fans like myself and newcomers alike.

Star Ocean The Second Story R releases for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC on November 2, 2023. A prologue demo is available right now on all platforms.

Right Stuf Shutting Down

If you subscribed to the Right Stuf Anime email newsletter, you might have noticed that the company sent out coupons for the Crunchyroll Store instead of its own website recently. It was announced on the company's homepage that the North American anime and manga online store Right Stuf will be shut down on October 10, 2023 due to a Crunchyroll acquisition. All of its products will be moved to the Crunchyroll Store. [Thanks, Manga Alerts & Restocks!]

This comes after a Right Stuf reassurance that no branding changes or merging of any kind would take place after Crunchyroll acquired it in early August 2022. Now about a year later, that previous statement from has been entirely contradicted. From now on, the name Right Stuf will be no more and all of its inventory will belong to Crunchyroll.

Here's the Right Stuf newsletter statement shared by Manga Alerts & Restocks:

This isn't the first time Crunchyroll acquired a large western anime company. In March 2022, Crunchyroll also acquired Funimation and all of its licenses.

The Right Stuf online store will be shutting down on October 10, 2023. All of the products will be sold on the Crunchyroll Store from now on.

So Toro will never have to worry about looking for you again.
