What are the best open-world games on PC? From the early days of gaming, with Ultima and Lords of Midnight, open-world games have always been right at home on PC - indeed, those pesky consoles often couldn't handle it. Compare the ambitious early version of Halo to the final, more confined result, for example - and only the PC could hold sprawling regions in the very first Elder Scrolls games. Nevertheless, the leap into full 3D with Grand Theft Auto 3 and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind really brought the idea of open-world gaming to the masses.

These days, open-world games are their own genre separate from single-player MMOs. You can find accurate depictions of real-life cities or countries, huge fictional expanses with their own landmarks, complete worlds to check out - or even entire galaxies, depending on where you want to go on your next adventure. Not only are these the best open-world games, but a lot of them show up in our best PC games list, too.

Resident Evil 4 Remake has some of the finest over-the-shoulder shooting in all of videogames. The original RE4 set the standard, of course, but Capcom's 2023 horror hit made it louder, nastier, and more gratifying. You take the intense, back-to-the-wall action of Leon Kennedy's latest outing, and combine it with the isometric viewpoint and brutalist, pseudo-Soviet aesthetic of Disco Elysium. It sounds like they won't fit together - how can you have a third-person shooter if we're playing from that classic CRPG-type perspective. But you see, this is the trick. With an art style also reminiscent of Signalis, and dismemberment mechanics that would make Dead Space's Isaac Clarke jealous, Holstin, a new survival horror game available to try on Steam, has a lot of cool surprises.

What are the Diablo 4 Abattoir of Zur rewards? This punishing Pinnacle Dungeon is the highlight of patch 1.2.3, offering high-level players a chance to test their mettle against the hardest challenges that the servants of Zir can throw at them.

That said, the Diablo 4 Abattoir of Zir rewards aren't as substantial as you might assume. In many ways, the challenge is meant to be the reward in itself, as Blizzard continues to expand the Diablo 4 endgame for its most powerful players. The Diablo 4 Abattoir of Zir is effectively a time trial, which tasks you to clear the Diablo 4 dungeon in the space of ten minutes. While there is plenty of hype for The Game Awards 2024 - and a fair bit of controversy - one thing that is becoming somewhat of an annual tradition is the giving away of Steam Decks. This year, 100 1TB Steam Deck OLED models can be won, and all you have to do is watch the marathon awards ceremony live.

During last year's event, the OG Steam Deck was given out to lucky winners every minute, as long as they were watching The Game Awards live, but it appears a different format will be in play this year, with the 1TB Steam Deck OLED as a prize. Metal Gear Solid has one of the most brilliant and distinctive aesthetics in all of gaming. Pour one out for Mimimi Games today, readers. Despite announcing they were shutting up shop following the release of this year's fantastic Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, today marks the grand finale for their stealth strategy masterpiece in the form of a new free Treasure Hunt update, and the release of their two paid expansions. Each brings a brand-new pirate to The Red Marley's undead crew, as well as their own half-dozen story missions to play through spread across islands old and new, and once you've begun each of their respective questlines, they're readily available to play in any of the game's regular plunderings, too.

Mimimi have kept the identity of these pirates a secret until now, but after playing both DLCs for a big chunk of the last week, I'm confident in saying this is exactly the swansong Shadow Gambit deserves - with one of the expansions in particular bringing a poignant touch of coming full circle on Mimimi's work as a studio. As I mentioned in our RPS reacts piece, I'm genuinely excited by the prospect of a renewed Vice City and you bet I'll be there for the inevitable five-minute narrated trailer that begins with a person saying, "Welcome to Vice City".

There's no doubt Vice City is going to be dense and chaotic, going by all the twerking and the social media parodies of real life Florida folks. But really, I do hope that Rockstar doesn't just reserve next-gen's horsepower for wildness. I want some peace, some quiet, some innocuous suburbs to laze around in. That would be nice.

Square Enix shared new Final Fantasy VII Rebirth information and screenshots featuring Priscilla, a resident of Under Junon that likes to befriend dolphins. The new character design and screenshot was also compared with images of the original Final Fantasy VII.

And here is the new Priscilla screenshot from Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. The screenshot shows that Priscilla retains the same design and outfit, but now includes more detail in her clothing, and even preserves the green hair accessory from the original. In addition, Priscilla is now seen wearing a seashell necklace.

The official Square Enix social media account shared that Priscilla likes to teach dolphins tricks. In FFVII Rebirth, Priscilla is also worried that the dolphins and other sea creatures are suffering because of the pollution caused by undersea Mako reactors.

Priscilla is voiced by Rikako Ohta in the Japanese dub of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Ohta is a young up-and-coming voice actor who has previously worked in various Japanese TV drama shows, as well as provide Japanese voiceover for roles such as Cassandra Lang in the Ant-Man movies. This will be her first video game credit.

Moonstone Island Winter DLC

Moonstone Island will be receiving a round of winter themed DLC and an update just in time for Christmas. These new additions include some free content along with a paid decoration pack will be releasing on December 13, 2023.

The free content for the Moonstone Island winter DLC includes festive decorations and a selection of new Ice Spirits, including a polar bear in a huge jumper and a penguin on a snowboard. Their names have not been revealed yet. In addition, a new infinite dungeon will be included, called the Infinidungeon. Two major tweaks will also be made to the game, including the ability to fast travel using a new Warp Totem item and the ability to save Spirits to the Science Center, allowing you to keep them even without a Spirit Barn.

The paid DLC, called December Lovely Cozies, will feature a range of new decorations for Moonstone Island. These include snowmen, which the developers at Supersoft have named Snowmelia and Frostopher, along with a Snowman House. Other items will include a snowboard, fuzzy rug and icicles. This DLC will be available for $3.99 and there will be a 15% discount for its first week.

This is the second round of seasonal DLC added to Moonstone Island. In October, Supersoft added a Halloween update to the game. Like the winter DLC, it contained new spirits and decorations, along with quality-of-life adjustments.

Moonstone Island is out now for PC, with a Switch version on the way. The winter DLC will be available on December 13, 2023.

Persona 3 Reload Yukari Battle Outfit Emphasizes Her Role as an Archer

Atlus shared new insights from Persona 3 Reload character designer Azusa Shimada about the new battle outfit for Yukari. Her new outfit is designed to reinforce the idea of Yukari being both a fashionable person and a cool fighter.

The A-line silhouette of her new jacket is intended to reinforce her aesthetic as an archer, explained Azusa. Furthermore, she wears her jacket in a casual manner, and pairs it with widely visible neck and chest accessories to emphasize the idea that she's a fashion-conscious person.

Azusa also said that he wanted to make her combat equipment, bow, and quiver look heavy. The reasoning behind this is so that she would convey the feeling of being a cool fighter, as much as she is cute and fashionable. In a similar fashion, Yukari's jacket is designed to flutter and move when she casts Wind elemental spells.

You can take a better look at the new Persona 3 Reload combat outfit for Yukari, and original Japanese commentary on it here:

https://twitter.com/p_kouhou/status/1732339097686114469

Atlus previously shared some comments about the design for the battle outfit of the Persona 3 Reload main character, and Azusa said that he drew inspiration from biker jackets and military clothing.

Persona 3 Reload will come out for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC via Steam on February 2, 2024. Atlus recently released a new trailer focused on the battle system.

Review- Lego Bricktales VR Is the Coziest Quest Game a

The VR version of Lego Bricktales is a perfect example of a game working better on a new platform than its original one. While I enjoyed playing it on a PS5, getting to actually zoom in on dioramas and build on virtual tables in my lap or on my coffee table is far more intuitive and fun.

We're an observer in Lego Bricktales VR. We watch from above as a young individual reunites with his grandfather to help restore a dilapidated amusement park. How? They work alongside a robot named Rusty that was rehabbed by aliens and go through portals to other areas to assist people in need. In so doing, they earn the Happiness Crystals necessary to clean up the place, get the mayor off Grandpa's back, and potentially make even more people happy.

Solving this crisis is a fairly simple affair. You go through portals to different regions inspired by Lego sets, like a jungle or city. When traversing the overworld, you move your minifig avatar around, perhaps collecting items, talking to people in need of assistance, or using Rusty's abilities to continue on your way. Though often the means of moving forward means using the power of building.

Building is truly the highlight of Lego Bricktales in VR. The game constantly tasks players with creating items to advance the story and proceed through areas. In some situations, it means creating bridges, staircases, or supports to grant you access to new areas. This also means a "testing" portion so you can ensure it is safe to put weight on things. You might also be matching existing structures, piecing together things, or building specific items to help move through spaces. There are often multiple right answers, and you also can get customization options to make these new creations look better in the dioramas you're exploring.

Remember how I said Lego Bricktales felt better suited to VR earlier? That building is exactly why. When you're going through these sections, you use the VR controller to actually pick up and place each brick. Because we now have a three dimensional field, which we can move at any time and basically have in our laps, we know exact positioning and can easily adjust every item. It felt much easier both to assemble items, as well as ensure that certain constructs were structurally sound. It's a luxury that I didn't have on the Switch, and it made the experience much more enjoyable.

Image via ClockStone Studio and Thunderful Games

The perspectives afforded by this being in VR also make it easier to appreciate the environments we're exploring. I found it easier to find collectibles, like hermit crabs or small animals, in stages due to being able to spin the whole build in my lap and really peer at it from above. The viewpoints are really fantastic. Plus having the pass-through option to allow it to seem like the dioramas are in your living room and in front of you is a fun perk. Though honestly, I used the mixed reality option to play while having something on in the background. The only frustration stems from needing to constantly shift and adjust the playfield to see different perspectives. It really isn't possible to just set it down and leave the diorama in one place for an extended period. Also, as good as it does look here, I did find it looked better on the PS5, so I feel like a bit of a sacrifice was made.

Lego Bricktales really works well in VR, and it is a lot of fun to play on the Quest 3. It really does feel like building is more fun when you're going hands-on with the headset's controllers to move each brick and go more hands-on, in a way, with the creations. Plus there is the feeling of each diorama and project being right in front of you, as though you were going through an actual set in your living room. It's one of the cozier and relaxed VR games I've played, and I appreciate this new approach to the adventure.

Lego Bricktales VR will come to the Meta Quest Pro, 2, and 3 on December 7, 2023.

Poncle announced that there will be a Vampire Survivors Among Us DLC pack called Emergency Meeting. It will debut on the Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on December 18, 2023 for $2.49/€2.49/£1.99, followed by a PC and mobile one.

As suggested by the name, all of the new content will be based on Among Us. This means there will be nine playable characters based on crewmates. Songs from the game will appear. So will 15 weapons inspired by the game and its kills. This also means the new characters and old ones can visit a Polus Replica-inspired map to uncover its secrets and face its enemies.

Here's the full trailer for the Vampire Survivors Emergency Meeting DLC. It begins with an animated segment featuring some of the various playable characters we've already seen in the game. While facing a boss, they are teleported to another area. This is Polus, and the crewmates then appear before them. The animation then continues with a brief clip of gameplay footage suggesting some of the crewmate playable characters could be a ghost and an imposter.

Here's a gallery of screenshots showing off how some of the various characters and the new stage will look once the DLC drops.

While Vampire Survivors is getting an Among Us crossover, Among Us just got an update with other games. It now has an Indie Cosmicube for people to buy with Beans. If they do, equip it, and play the game, then they can earn cosmetics based on other titles like Celeste, Undertale, and Untitled Goose Game. Things based on seven other games will appear there.

Vampire Survivors is available for the Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and mobile devices. The Emergency Meeting DLC will bring various Among Us items to the Xbox and PC versions of the game on December 18, 2023, with the Switch and mobile ones arriving eventually as well.

Arcade Paradise VR Heading to Meta Quest

Nosebleed Interactive and Wired Productions announced its laundromat and arcade management simulator Arcade Paradise is getting a VR version for Meta Quest headsets. It is "coming soon" to the systems, and the product page is already live.

The premise in Arcade Paradise is that players are tasked with working at a laundromat. You wash and dry people's clothing for them, while also tending to the place. However, in the back room you can set up an arcade. Profits from the arcade cabinets and laundry can be reinvested back into the business, allowing you access to new cabinets. There are 35 cabinets available to "buy" in-game, though DLC expanded the range of the original release, and these are playable minigames inspired by actual arcade games or other titles in various ways.

Here's the first trailer for the VR version of the game. It offers an idea of what to expect from the new approach to the title.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mg3ou51z3Fc&ab_channel=WiredProductions

Arcade Paradise originally launched on consoles and PCs back in August 2022. After launch, additional cabinets were added as paid DLC. This included ones like the Streets of Rage-like Kung Fury: Street Rage or the Vostok Inc. Pinball cabinet.

Arcade Paradise VR is on the way and will be playable on the Meta Quest, Meta Quest 2, Meta Quest 3, and Meta Quest Pro. It is immediately available on the PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Genshin Impact Artifacts and Expeditions Quality of Life Changes Coming in 4.3

HoYoVerse revealed that the 4.3 update for Genshin Impact will make two requested Artifacts and Expeditions quality of life changes. These will make it easier to sort or finish tasks.

When it comes to the Genshin Impact Artifacts, there will be new filtering and locking options. For example, you can sort by which set, then choose to search by lock state, level status, and if it is equipped. It will be easier to sort by set when in the equipping screen. Final Fantasy XIV plates Bahamut header

Square Enix announced that it will collaborate with Tsutaya (the pottery brand, not the rental stores) on maki-e plates to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Final Fantasy XIV. The plates will be available to pre-order from December 12, 2023 until January 15, 2024.

Wajima-nuri is a type of Japanese lacquerware that differentiates itself from other lacquerware with the usage of multiple layers of urushi in the undercoat. Though the precise details of when this particular style of lacquerware came about, historians believe that the current version of it came about during the early Edo period. The reason why Square Enix and Tsutaya will work together to release wajima-nuri plates is to try and interest younger people in the ancient art.

There will be two wajima-nuri plates available for the Final Fantasy XIV collaboration. The first one focuses on Bahamut and the second references Meteion. The Bahamut plate costs 66,550 JPY ($451.75) and the Meteion plate costs 40,700 JPY ($276.30). Another Bahamut plate will be on display at the Final Fantasy XIV fan festival in 2024.

Though the original Final Fantasy XIV game came out in 2010, this 10th anniversary is actually referring to the current 2.0 version. The game was originally a critical and commercial failure. However, after Naoki Yoshida became the director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV, he revamped it and then relaunched it in 2013. It then went on to become one of Square Enix's most popular and profitable properties.

The Final Fantasy XIV 10th anniversary plates will come out after late March 2024. Final Fantasy XIV is readily available on the PS4, PS5, and Windows PC.

fate/grand order uesugi kenshin

Lasengle uploaded a new trailer for Uesugi Kenshin, who will be a limited SSR Ruler in Fate/Grand Order. Other Servants on her banner are Berserkers Mori Nagayoshi and Nagakura Shinpachi.

https://twitter.com/fgoproject/status/1732328189450752494

Uesugi Kenshin is the SSR version of Nagao Kagetora, who was a free SR Lancer during the Gudaguda Final Honnoji 2019 event. It will then remove a single target's buffs, and then deal a powerful Arts attack. It will deal extra damage against enemies with the Man Attribute.

Like her Lancer counterpart, Nana Mizuki is the voice for Uesugi Kenshin. Mizuki is a singer and actress whose career started in 1997. Some of her more prominent roles include Fate from Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha, Tamao in Shaman King, and Hinata in both Naruto and Boruto.

As for Uesugi Kenshin the actual person, he was a famous daimyo during the Sengoku period of Japan. He ruled over the Echigo province, which is around modern Niigata Prefecture. He had a rivalry with Takeda Shingen, who also appeared in Fate/Grand Order when the current Gudaguda Super Goryokaku event started in late November 2023. Due to his fame and exploits on the battlefield, he is a popular figure who has appeared in multiple video games and anime based on the Sengoku period.

Fate/Grand Order is readily available on mobile devices, with the Japanese server currently running the Uesugi Kenshin banner. The banner will end on December 19, 2023.
