PCGamesN Thursday, December 14, 2023 10:33 AM Which characters are in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero? We've seen so many different versions of Dragon Ball fighting games over the years. Starting with the Budokai series which began back in 2002, transitioning into a 3D arena with Budokai Tenkaichi (named Sparkling in Japan), before taking the series to the esports scene with Dragon Ball FighterZ. Sadly, the Dragon Ball Sparking Zero release date isn't arriving any time soon, but there's still plenty to look forward to. Dragon Ball Sparking Zero follows on from Budokai Tenkaichi, introducing a new entry to the fighting game series since 2010. PCGamesN Thursday, December 14, 2023 10:40 AM Is Escape from Tarkov: Arena free? EFT can be quite a daunting prospect for the uninitiated; in theory, it's a case of infiltrating into an area, looting, killing, and exfiltrating safely. There are AI enemies as well as human players whose objective is seemingly just to ruin your day. It's a slow-paced affair, and can either be incredibly rewarding, or exceedingly frustrating. Escape from Tarkov: Arena aims to take that tactical, very deliberate gameplay, and place it into a squad-based arena co-op game. PCGamesN Thursday, December 14, 2023 10:31 AM Cities Skylines 2 is a superb strategy sim, sure, but perhaps lacking a certain drama. You build your roads. You tweak your economy. You slowly balance budgets and levy your taxes. But there's no huge, malevolent, overhanging threat - and huge malevolent threats make any game better. Look at Frostpunk. Snowbound, starving, and barely holding on to the final vestiges of society, that's a strategy game with some tragedy. PCGamesN Thursday, December 14, 2023 10:00 AM It's been a protracted process but Intel has finally officially unveiled its new Intel Core Ultra CPUs powered by its new Intel Meteor Lake architecture. Along with a new and complex hybrid chip design, the new processors promise to deliver a big boost in onboard graphics performance. They also add in dedicated AI cores and new extra low power cores to ensure laptops and other mobile devices can do more for longer when running on battery power. While packed with new technology, these CPUs won't be candidates for our best CPU for gaming guide, as they're currently for laptop and mobile use only - you can't buy them as a standalone upgrade. Indeed, Intel is completely skipping adding a range of desktop CPUs using the Intel Meteor Lake architecture. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, December 14, 2023 12:00 PM "I was looking up our Wikipedia page to see what happened this year," says Nightdive Studios' CEO Stephen Kick as we sit down to chat. That might seem like an odd thing to say about your own company's activities. But when you look at what Nightdive have done in the last twelve months, it's less surprising. In March, Nightdive announced they were being acquired by Atari in a deal worth $10 million. In May, they released their long-anticipated remake of System Shock, in development for eight years. July brought Rise Of The Triad: Ludicrous Edition, while August saw the release of Quake 2 Remastered, and a remaster of Turok 3 arrived at the end of November. Nightdive are currently working on an overhaul of Star Wars: Dark Forces, due out in 2024. In short, it's been a busy year for the remastering maestros. In the wider context of 2023, which has been simultaneously a banner games and a deeply worrying year for the people making them, I wanted to know how Nightdive view the last twelve months, and what the audience response to these projects means for the studio's future. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, December 14, 2023 10:06 AM Intel have finally confirmed the full lineup and specs for their 14th gen Meteor Lake CPUs, which for now is comprised entirely of ultrathin laptop chips with the new Core Ultra branding. I appreciate that a PC gaming site might not be the most natural home for this information, considering both that these are not technically gaming CPUs and that that Meteor Lake's most hyped-up feature is more of a productivity aid: a Neural Processing Unit (NPU) for client-side AI work. However, as the new H-series parts also integrate Intel Arc graphics for the first time, there is some interesting potential for them to transform lightweight ultrabooks into viable gaming laptops. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, December 14, 2023 9:00 AM Video game openings have always been a source of fascination for me. As a player, you're excited by the prospect of the game to come - the sights you'll see, the challenges you'll face - and first impressions can make or break your entire perception of what a game is versus the one you had stored in your head before switching it on. For video game creators, however, a new beginning is often racked with questions. What, exactly, do you choose to show players first? How will you introduce them to something they've never seen before? And if that game is successful, how do you keep reinventing that first impression across what could be several decades? In revisiting every mainline Doom game to celebrate its 30th anniversary this month, it's clear that even id's iconic shooter has wrestled with how to answer these question, and the ways it's tried to reinvent itself over the years paints a captivating portrait of a series trying to move with the times. Nowhere is this more apparent than in its opening levels. Played in close succession, crushing 30 years into not even quite three hours, what emerges isn't just the evolution of one of the all-time great PC games, but also a potted history of the FPS. So join me as we chart Doom's rise, fall and rebirth through the lens of its first stages. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Thursday, December 14, 2023 7:00 AM Confession time, readers. Before a couple of weeks ago, I had never played the original Doom. As a child, my family didn't have much money and I didn't get my first laptop until I was 16. Thus, I missed out on a lot of what are now considered PC staples. With dread, I'm often met with the accursed exclamation, "You've not played insert game before?" followed by a good dose of judgment. But what do you do when you need to play through a backlog of games all while keeping up-to-date with new releases for work? With games now stretching out at 100+ hours apiece, where is the time for old classics like Doom? For me, approaching Doom was cathartic. Playing a game that's older than myself was certainly an experience, but I was shocked at how well it holds up. |

Ahead of her playable debut in Genshin Impact, HoYoVerse released a new trailer for Navia. As a reminder, she will be a five-star Geo Claymore character and she debuted during the Fontaine Archon Quests.
The trailer shows Navia traveling around Fontaine with the members of Spina di Rosula, which she is the President of. Once she discovers Aether, she hands him an invitation to a party in Poisson. The trailer does not focus on Navia as a fighter and instead, highlights how she is a go-getter who works to obtain what she wants.
You can also watch the trailer in Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.
During the Genshin Impact Version 4.3 special program, we saw a bit more of how Navia will play in battle. Her gimmick focuses on the Crystallize Elemental Reaction. The more Elemental Shards the party gets, the more Crystal Shrapnels Navia can stack. She can then shoot out these Crystal Shrapnels with her Skill, and the more stacks she has the more shots she can fire. As a reminder, Navia and Ayaka will be in the first half of Version 4.3. Raiden Shogun and Yoimiya will re-run in the second half. New 4-star Chevreuse will be on Raiden Shogun and Yoimiya's banners.
Genshini Impact is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Version 4.3 of Genshin Impact will come out on December 20, 2023.

Kotobukiya opened pre-orders for its upcoming ARTFX J figure of Elizabeth from Persona 3 Reload. People can now place their orders for the figure, which has a tax-inclusive price tag of 19,250 yen (~$136).
The 1/8 scale static figure will have an overall height of 220mm (~8.66 inches). The size will include the thickness of the pedestal where the figure will stand.
After having previously shown the unpainted prototype in late September 2023, Kotobukiya has shared new images of the fully painted sample. There will be more attention to detail on the tarot cards that will be attached to Elizabeth's shoe, dress, and the Persona Compendium book.
The Japan-only Kotobukiya Online Shop will offer an alternate swappable part showing Elizabeth's smiling face as an exclusive bonus. The figure is also available for worldwide shipping via AmiAmi with a discounted price of 16,360 yen (~$115.5). However, the latter will not include the bonus part.
The 1/8 scale ARTFX J figure of Elizabeth from Persona 3 Reload will be officially available in June 2024. Kotobukiya is basing this figure on Elizabeth's appearance in the new remake of Persona 3 that will be available on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC on February 2, 2024.

Ahead of Version 2.0, HoYoVerse teased another new Honkai: Star Rail character named Misha. He will be a four-star Ice Destruction character.
Misha is a bellboy at The Reverie Hotel, which will likely be a new location to explore and visit when Penacony goes live in Honkai: Star Rail. He dreams of becoming an intergalactic explorer just like his grandfather. Until he can do that, he works hard at the hotel and is very thoughtful to the guests. He has a particular affinity for mechanics, and is good at fixing things. In Misha's splash art, it looks like he tripped over a cat and accidentally let go of a trolley, so clumsiness might also be a character trait of his.
In English, Cat Protano voices Misha. Protano previously appeared as iDoll Flower and Isabel in Goddess of Victory: Nikke, as well as Marie Anto in Persona 5 Tactica. Eriko Matsui voices him in the Japanese version. Matsui's previous roles include Nao Kamiya in The Idolm@ster Cinderella Girls and Fuji Kiseki in Umamusume: Pretty Derby.
Misha is likely the final new character who'll debut in Version 2.0 of Honkai: Star Rail. HoYoVerse previously teased Black Swan, with her making her first actual appearance in the TGA 2023 trailer for the game. Several hours before HoYoVerse revealed Misha, it also showed the splash art for Sparkle.
Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices.

FuturLab announced people can now head to Santa's Workshop in PowerWash Simulator on most platforms. The doors will open on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC on December 14, 2023, with the Switch version showing showing up after Christmas on January 8, 2024.
The free area is referred to as Merry Washmas. Once people download it, they can change their avatar's appearance and head to a new map to clean up at the North Pole. The Power Washer's suit features an ugly sweater motif with matching "mittens." The washer wand can be changed to look green with a candy cane-like handle.
A trailer and a handful of screenshots were released to offer a better look at the new space. Some of the messes will have elf-sized footprints or outlines on walls. There will be a tree to clean, Santa's chair, and workshop elements. There will also be an area where people can see Santa's suit and the elves' uniforms.
Here's the PowerWash Simulator Santa's Workshop trailer:
And here's a closer look at some elements of the map.
It isn't uncommon for free PowerWash Simulator add-ons to appear. A free Tomb Raider update added Croft Manor to clean. Another allowed people to head to Midgar to clean places from FFVII Remake.
Powerwash Simulator is available on the PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Santa's Workshop is out on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC now. It will appear on the Switch on January 8, 2023.

Atlus and Vanillaware revealed that there will be relationship elements with Unicorn Overlord characters in a Rapport system. This will also involve the ability for Alain to exchange a Ring of the Maiden to take part in a Rite of Covenant with one other character.
When going through Unicorn Overlord, people can build a Rapport with characters to improve relationships by eating together, fighting together, and giving gifts. Some examples of things you can give to a character guarding a town are Cut Flowers, Dice, a Replica Sword, Scented Soap, or Secular Texts. While gifts involve a single person, meals can involve a group. The screenshot showing a dinner with allies noted that something like Bacon and Soft-Boiled Egg Galettes is a meal for three and increases Rapport by 70 for 630G. Meanwhile, the Pasta al Pomodoro with Eggplant feeds four and boosts Rapport by 90 for 1080G.
Some of the Rapport bonuses were brought up as well. Stats for characters in a unit will go up if they all share relationships. Rapport Conversations come up between some people who have gotten to know each other well enough. Also, the Rite of the Covenant can happen between Alain and an ally when their relationship is maxed out, with the initial screenshot showing Chloe, Clive, Hodrick, Lex, Melisandre, Scarlett, Travis, and Yahna in the list of possible people shown in the Atlus screenshot.
Here are the Unicorn Overlord Rapport relationship screenshots showing characters interacting. The batch also features a number of new examples of Vanillaware food.
In addition to the new screenshots, four more of Alain's allies were revealed. Many of the characters of this latest group involve leaders or members of royal families. Here's the full list of people who will appear:
And here are the new screenshots and official art of all of them.
Unicorn Overlord will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X on March 8, 2024.

A new trailer for Persona 3 Reload focuses on Igor and Elizabeth, who are the mysterious residents of the Velvet Room. Bin Shimada will now be the new voice actor for Igor as of Persona 3 remake.
The trailer shows what you can do in the Velvet Room. Aside from fusing Personas with Igor, you can also complete requests for Elizabeth. These requests serve as the Social Link for Elizabeth. Igor is a staple of the Persona series. He focuses on aiding the protagonist on his journey, serving as a reliable ally despite his somewhat fearsome appearance.
You can watch the trailer for Igor in Persona 3 Reload here:
From the original Persona 3 until Persona 5, Isamu Tanonaka was the voice actor for Igor. Sadly, Tanonaka died in 2010 from a heart attack. He was 77 years old at the time of death. Anything related to Persona 3 through Persona 5 that came out after 2010 used archived voice files of Tanonaka.
Bin Shimada succeeded Tanonaka as Igor in Persona 3 Reload. He will likely continue to voice the character in future games. Shimada is a veteran voice actor whose prominent roles include Tobimaro in Urusei Yatsura (1981), Paptimus in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Broly in the Dragon Ball Z film series. He was also the original voice actor for Ryu in Street Fighter II. Meanwhile, Miyuki Sawashiro has reprised her role as Elizabeth. Sawashiro's past roles include Raiden Shogun in Genshin Impact, Kurapika in Hunter x Hunter 2011, and Mordred in Fate/Apocrypha.
Persona 3 Reload will come out for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC via Steam on February 2, 2024.

It can feel like a lot of VR adventures can sort of chop an experience up into sections, not really feeling on par with a title you'd play on a console or PC. With Asgard's Wrath 2, I felt like I was going through a definitive action-RPG that had these open world experiences and would feel as home on a PS5 or Switch as it does in VR on the Quest 3.
Asgard's Wrath 2 picks up where the sequel left off. Betrayed by their "mentor" Loki, the player's fledgling god is trapped. After a supernatural creature breaks into the otherworldly tavern where you're locked away and a brief bout with it, the three Weavers pluck you out of danger and reveal that fledgling is really a Cosmic Guardian. Loki used the power gained in the first game to head to new realms, and now the player goes from Norse mythology to Egyptian mythology, working alongside Horus and his allies to face Set and new opponents. It's a big game that sends you off through different worlds, with four heroes and five followers to rely on at your side.
I didn't expect this sense of scale. Aegir's Hall and the Temple of Atum ease someone into the adventure. Explore one building. Go through rooms of a dungeon leading up to the exit. But once in Horus' hideout and the more open world, it really felt like I was exploring any other action-RPG. While Horus' home isn't massive, you can look up and around to see the statues' height, peek around corners on your way to speak to Bes, and are just in this larger space. But then in the open areas of the desert itself, it just feels like there are opportunities.
For example, not long after taking my first steps into the desert, I was following a trail of destruction while searching for my first follower. I saw one of the larger Apex Predator enemies that someone encounter. However, it wasn't coming after me. Rather, it was attacking some of the humanoid minions of Set, wiping them out. It really helped set the scene as I watched from afar. (Later, when I'd get to face the Deathstalker and similar foes, it almost felt like okay, this is starting to feel like maybe how I'd want to approach a VR Monster Hunter game.) As I continued, I found off-the-beaten path areas with enemies three or four levels higher than I was, guarding treasure and in spaces that encouraged me to explore on my way to objectives. With that, it helped that other players may have left Dark Souls-like Cosmic Projections as a ghost "alert" to a point of interest.
Combat also is deeper than I expected. For example, your first hero Abraxas has a sword and a throwing axe, with the sword also being used for grappling in some situations and the axe for ranged attacks or hitting switches. Cyrene and Alvilda both have these ranged components, which mean you could use Cyrene's harp or jellyfish to attack from a distance or hit multiple enemies, while Alvilda can shoot arrows with her bow, toss a mine. The different heroes' movesets mean that you get to experiment with combat styles, then can prioritize ones you like when exploring or going into the Uncharted Rift roguelike dungeon in the Inbetween. It's diverse, comfortable, and even feels like it's good for accessibility considering the different melee, ranged, and control means for each type of moveset and weapon. Combine that with a skill tree for characters as they level up, the followers you can use as mounts to go around the world, and the skill trees for them, and it's all just very complex.
Even more so because these people can have some distinct personalities! When your Cosmic Guardian is riding shotgun in a hero's body, they'll banter and offer insight into the world with you. (Spoilers aside, Abraxas' initial conversations got me wondering about the differences between the Norse gods in Asgard's Wrath and Egyptian ones in Asgard's Wrath 2, as well as the relationships between the divine and mortals.) With your followers, it feels like they grow alongside you. I'd even say enemies become bigger "jerks" due to how they begin to learn and adapt to your go-to moves, unless you drop down to the easiest difficulty level that prioritizes the story.
The design of it also makes me feel like it's skirting the line between accessible and showcasing VR game staples while doing so in an integrated way that doesn't make them feel like a gimmick. Yes, there's a fishing minigame, but you catches could be used as components when creating items or as a follower gift. You could go through minigames that involve using a slingshot to hit targets or sliding disks on a grid to land on certain spaces and appear on a leaderboard. Even the Uncharted Rifts roguelite dungeons can feel like a short combat experience more akin to other VR fantasy adventures focused on going through a few challenges and facing foes. The only time I felt like things were leaning into territories where it was a bit frustrating or unnecessary involved some context-sensitive actions for certain moves or actions. A good early example involved throwing Abraxas' axe, holding a trigger, then making a motion with your hand to alter its path to hit switches. Learning the proper and timing frustrated me a bit.
I also appreciate how it almost feels like Asgard's Wrath 2 is breaking the fourth wall in its adventure. It acknowledges that when you're using these human heroes, there are moments when you'll hold Y to step back into your full, Cosmic Guardian god form. This larger being has a greater view of the world around them and can influence the environment in different ways, allowing for some really fun puzzles. Especially when they also involve realizing when to transfer your consciousness back into the hero you're controlling for the next steps.
It also feels like it strives for the sort of interactions between characters that we're seeing in games like God of War and Mass Effect. There is actually a relationship system with followers that allows you to become friends with them via interactions like gifts. Your characters gain new skills via a tree, and so do them. You have additional side quests you can take, though that could involve a fetch quest like grabbing some ingredients while you're doing other things in the world. You're able to go out of your way to hunt or fight these optional, stronger than usual enemies like Apex Predators, take those items to cook or craft equipment, and benefit from it.
Also, given that Asgard's Wrath 2 and Assassin's Creed Nexus VR are the two big Quest games recently, I sort of feel like I can't talk about one without touching on the other. It feels like Asgard's Wrath 2 is, at times, a more cohesive game with experiences that lead one into the other. You aren't going through scenarios, with the various acts from each part of the story tying in well to each other. However, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR can sometimes feel technically impressive in another way. There are times when the textures here are noticeably weird or character models are taking a bit of a hit more, perhaps in part because Sanzaru Games is doing so much, while the environments and elements looked more realistic in Ubisoft's latest. (For a great example, approach the telescope in the one room of Horus' hideout.) While both games felt quite stable, I felt like that Asgard's Wrath 2 seemed like it offered a more consistent frame rate and smoother experience overall. I did run across some bugs in my time playing, but the patches and updates appeared so frequently that any of the issues I had should be remedied by now.
I know I touched on accessibility earlier, but Sanzaru also included an array of options designed to help ensure anyone of any skill level or VR familiarity could play Asgard's Wrath 2 on the Quest 2 or 3. You can set the difficulty, of course. But you can also do things like set up blinders on the sides during moving, set turn speeds, or choose to have a reticle to prevent motion sickness, with presets and customizable fine-tuning available. There were a few instances in Uncharted Rifts and boss fights with a lot of movement where I did still feel the effects of VR, especially when I used Alvilda, but it's quite manageable.
I've referenced the Asgard's Wrath 2 Uncharted Rifts mode a lot by this point, and its inclusion almost made me feel like I was going through two Quest 3 VR games at once. This is an optional feature that lets you head into procedurally generated dungeons for roguelike runs in the Inbetween area. You'll see enemies and sorts of situations like you would in the main game. The rooms could feature fights, an area you need to explore to reach the end, a chance to get items by finding or buying them, or a boss. You can also get modifiers to help with each playthrough and collect items you can use in the main game. Most of my focus was on the main campaign, so I only dabbled with a few runs, but it's like a genuine, spin-off complement that lets you focus on the combat and exploration mechanics if you really enjoyed them in the main game.
As I went through Asgard's Wrath 2, I started to feel like it's the Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt VR equivalent for the Meta Quest 3. It's basically a pack-in, since everyone with that headset gets it for free so long as they buy the headset before February 27, 2024. It's a showcase of everything the device is capable of, much like Nintendo's pack-in. It also offers a sense of versatility and variety, while still catering to any sort of audience. It's a genuinely cool, well-crafted endeavor, and the fact that the only real flaws I encountered when playing had to do with its textures sometimes looking a bit outdated, some actions were a little frustrating, and some bugs that should already be fixed in the build everyone will get left me very impressed.
Asgard's Wrath 2 will be available on the Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro on December 15, 2023.

HoYoVerse teased Sparkle, who will be a new five-star character in Honkai: Star Rail Version 2.0. She will be a Quantum Harmony character.
On paper, Sparkle just wants to join the Genius Society despite her lack of "cool skills" or major ambitions. In reality, she is a member of the Masked Fools, who worship Aha the Elation. Other Masked Fools that we've encountered so far in the series include Giovanni from Aetherium Wars and Sampo. The only thing Sparkle cares about is her own amusement, and she is a great actress who can hide her true self behind countless masks. Her design has a very strong Japanese aesthetic, complete with a kitsune mask she wears as a hair ornament. There are also goldfish swimming around her in her splash art.
More information on Sparkle's kit will appear closer to her release window. In English, Lizzie Freeman voices her. Freeman has previously appeared as Trish in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind and Chisato Nishikigi in Lycoris Recoil. Reina Ueda will voice Sparkle in the Japanese version of the game. Some of Ueda's past roles include Kanao in Demon Slayer and Ganyu in Genshin Impact.
Honkai: Star Rail is readily available on the PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Sparkle will make her playable debut in Version 2.0 of Honkai: Star Rail along with Black Swan.
