Kotaku Wednesday, March 22, 2023 3:51 PM Filing taxes suck. If it weren't for the sweet reward of a tax refund, many of us probably wouldn't be filing our taxes (which are due on April 18th) at all this year to avoid the headache of leafing through physical and electronic paperwork. Kotaku Wednesday, March 22, 2023 3:40 PM Starting back in 2004, Far Cry has become one of Ubisoft's biggest and most successful franchises of all time. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, March 22, 2023 1:20 PM Ubisoft revealed Ghostwriter yesterday, marketed as an AI development tool (really just machine learning) that generates first drafts of NPC barks, which are the offhand remarks you might hear when running past NPCs. Skyrim's "I used to be an adventurer like you" is probably the most famous example of a bark. Ubisoft Ghostwriter has been met with passionately negative responses from some narrative designers, while others have been arguing for its use cases. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, March 22, 2023 12:00 PM Storyteller is a make-your-own drama puzzle game, taking place on the pages of a book and within empty comic-ish panels on those pages. For each puzzle you're given a set of characters and scenarios (the Baron, the Knight, the Queen; a wedding, a kidnap, an execution) and are tasked with arranging them in a combination that fits the story title you're given (The Queen Marries). It's playful and cute, with surprising depth that draws inspiration from classic stories. It's also very short. I'd wager you'll have hunnerpercented Storyteller in two hours max, which will sound like mana from heaven to some, but may disappoint you if you've been waiting for Storyteller for over a decade. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, March 22, 2023 10:00 AM Remember when Arkane said their co-op vampire 'em up Redfall is more akin to Far Cry than Left 4 Dead? I do! I remember a chill ran down my spine as I cast my mind back to Far Cry 6, where the tutorial island itself was longer than anything else I'd played that year. I was scared Redfall might succumb to a similar fate. I imagined it filling my head with map markers until my head swelled, popped like a balloon, and dropped grey rarity brain matter. Well, having given Redfall a go for 90 minutes I was, perhaps, being a bit dramatic. The game may be open world, and may have some slightly jarring open world-isms, but I felt like Arkane's magic wasn't diluted by it all. Their talent for storytelling and level design bubbled to the surface constantly, making exploration a genuine joy. Sure, I have some reservations, but I can't deny that I'm itching to play it again. |

Siliconera Wednesday, March 22, 2023 3:00 PM Gundam is one of Anime's most enduring and influential franchises, but that length also makes it intimidating for newcomers. A given entry could require context from anywhere in the 40 year history of the franchise, making getting into the series a lot harder than simply watching the latest big release. Luckily, Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is one of the most accessible entries yet. Taking place in the "Ad Stella" timeline, The Witch from Mercury (or G-Witch) requires no context from previous entries and, at a very digestible size of 12 episodes and a prologue, it can make for a great introduction to the kinds of themes and motifs of the Gundam franchise. So whether you've been intrigued by some of the Gunpla kits, been charmed by some of the voiced date scenes, or have been wanting to get into the series for a while, here's how to catch up on Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury ahead of its second season. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YGW2JRxWUU&ab_channel=GundamInfo How to watch the Gundam: The Witch from Mercury prologueEasily available on the official Gundam Youtube channel, the prologue episode not only lays out all the context you'll need going in to G-Witch, but also serves as a great taster for the rest of the series. If you enjoy the mix of action, intrigue and tragedy on display here, you should be in for a good time with season 1. You can watch the prologue for free on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IehG5wd8YfY&ab_channel=GundamInfo How to watch Gundam: The Witch from Mercury season 1The international distribution of G-Witch is being handled by Crunchyroll, but you will need to subscribe to the premium service to have access. It is available in both sub and dub formats, and episodes from season 2 will appear on there as well. Those wanting just a little more before they decide to commit can watch up to episode 10 on the Gundam YouTube channel. These appear to be subtitle-only, but they do have a wide range of languages available. Distribution in Asia is handled by a variety of different providers, including Bilibili, Netflix and LINE TV. You can find a full list of providers on the official G-Witch website. How to read the Gundam: The Witch from Mercury side storiesThere are 2 light novels for G-Witch. The first is titled Cradle Planet by Ichiro Ohkouchi, and that is told from the perspective of the Gundam Aeriel itself. You can read it for free on the official site. The second is a novelization written by Yuuya Takashima for Gundam Ace magazine. Unfortunately, it is not available in English as of yet. The third is a spin-off manga, also for Gundam Ace magazine. It is set several years after the event of the prologue and is mostly unrelated to Suletta's story. It is slated for a late March 2023 release, with no word on an English translation yet. The second season of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury is set to air on April 2, 2023 and will be available on Crunchyroll. Siliconera Wednesday, March 22, 2023 2:30 PM Ubisoft developed Ghostwriter, which is an AI writer tool that will specialize in writing dialogue for NPCs. The reason the developer provided for the development is a goal to lessen work for the writing staff, as they will no longer have to manually come up with lines for NPCs in a video game. There is also a video introducing how Ghostwriter will work. [Thanks, 4Gamer!] Similar to the MTPE (machine translation post-editing) process, there will still be a human behind the scenes. At this point in time, Ubisoft does not seem to plan on completely replacing scriptwriters with Ghostwriter when it comes to NPC dialogue in games. You can input information such as the NPC's situation and background, and then Ghostwriter will create several lines. The scriptwriter team will then use the lines as drafts and then edit them to create the NPC's dialog. You can check out the Ghostwriter introduction video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OeSOXHBvCI&t=1s As you can see from the above video, the scriptwriter will input a situation and then decide how the character will say the line. The situation in the example is the famous "arrow in the knee" line from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. AI is a controversial technology, as in copyright and creativity issues regarding AI art. However, Ubisoft repeatedly mentioned that it will only use Ghostwriter for NPC "barks" and as a way to alleviate the workload of its scriptwriters. NPC barks are the random lines you get when you walk past NPCs in the field. Writers might also use it for shorter lines that non-essential NPCs say when you talk to them. So far, it seems there are no plans to fully replace video game writers with this program. Ghostwriter is an AI tool for scriptwriters that Ubisoft will use in-house for its games. Siliconera Wednesday, March 22, 2023 1:30 PM The Sand Land movie will air in Japan on August 18, 2023. Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga, and Anima are collaborating to bring Akira Toriyama's manga to life. To coincide with World Water Day (considering water's importance in the work), the Sand Land Twitter account also revealed the first character visuals for the movie. When Bandai Namco Entertainment first released a trailer for Sand Land, it was unclear what it was going to be. The trailer had referred to it as a "visual adaptation." However, Bandai Namco had also expressed interest in developing it into a "full IP," so the movie might not be the only new Sand Land content. You can check out the new character visuals via the official Sand Land website. So far, they've released ones for Beelzebub, Thief, and Rao: [gallery ids="956618,956617,956616" link="file"] Sand Land focuses on the story of young demon Beelzebub in a desert world. Considering the climate and the drought affecting the planet, water is the most precious resource. However, a king has monopolized that supply. In order to get water, Sheriff Rao asked for help from the king of demons but the "help" came in the form of the king's son Beelzebub, along with his assistant Thief. The manga was a short series that ran from May to August 2000 and there is a single book volume. Viz is the English distributor. Sand Land will air in theaters on August 18, 2023.
