Final Fantasy XVI PC and DLC News Coming in 2023

During Square Enix's Voices From Valisthea panel at PAX West 2023, Producer Naoki Yoshida teased the Final Fantasy XVI PC port and DLC. There will be two add-ons released. Both of them will be paid. Also, the PC port is, as he mentioned before, in development.

There was no insight about what to expect from the Final Fantasy XVI DLC. So it is uncertain if they will be new stories or other sorts of experiences. No insight came up on what the PC port could entail either.

Here's the official reveal:

However, we did learn about some add-ons coming to the game. There is a free update arriving on September 2, 2023. Anyone with the game will see new content, in addition to some general fixes. Five characters are getting new looks in the patch. In addition, there will be a new weapon glamour feature. When in effect, it can look like Clive is using one of his other swords while in reality equipping one of the stronger ones he found along the way.

Final Fantasy XVI and its free character costumes update are available for the PlayStation 5 alongside a free demo. There is a six-month exclusivity period in effect ahead of the Final Fantasy XVI PC release.

Final Fantasy XVI Free Update Adds Character Costumes

At PAX West 2023, Square Enix announced a Final Fantasy XVI free update with character costumes will be available as on September 2, 2023. This update is twofold in terms of cosmetic options. Five characters get new looks. In addition, there will be weapon skins for Clive.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for Final Fantasy XVI characters when the patch adding costumes is discussed.

While the weapon skins were shown briefly, the presentation did involve a brief glimpse at them. The skins are essentially glamour options. So if someone liked one of Clive's past swords, they can choose its appearance, but use a more powerful one. There will also be an Onion Sword weapon to get after the patch is installed.

With the outfits, there are five designs. Only three were named in the trailer. Here are the Final Fantasy XVI characters getting outfits in the free update:

  • Ambrosia
  • Clive Rosfield: Burnt Black
  • Jill Warrick: Snow White
  • Joshua Rosfield
  • Torgal: Icy Blue

Square Enix also shared the full trailer for the new content. It also cites additional improvements to the game, but didn't detail all the specific changes.

Death Note 20th Anniversary Volume 1 Is a Subtle Tribute

Viz Media decided to do something special for the Death Note 20th anniversary. It honored the occasion with a convention-exclusive edition of the manga. So if you head to a special event, you might find yourself able to pick up Death Note 20th anniversary volume 1. It's an incredibly subtle way to honor the hallmark occasion, as well as remind people of the series' beginnings.

First of all, I'd like to thank Viz Media for helping to dig my grave. It's bad enough that sometimes I find myself mentioning a game on the NES, SNES, or even N64, realize a coworker or friend wasn't even born yet when those came out, and feel myself start to crumble to dust. Seeing the Death Note 20th anniversary volume 1 proudly proclaim that across the cover just hastens my eventual desiccation.

Speaking of which, the cover is the thing that makes this edition of the Death Note manga special. The hallmark here is that it replicates the art from Shonen Jump's January 1, 2004 issue. It features Takeshi Obata art of Light and Ryuk in monochromatic tones. In the case of Light, we see a shadow of Ryuk behind him, foreshadowing his use of the Death Note to become this god of death on earth. The text is entirely in a metallic silver print. It really stands out, with the words being as striking on the cover as they are on the spine. Not to mention, I appreciate the difference in the texture between the matte cover and the smoother lettering. That subtle difference really makes it feel a little more special.

However, from there, that's where the differences between this entry in the manga series and any Death Note volume 1 end. The interior is identical to the original installment. The only hallmark is the fact that it's marked as a convention exclusive and has an alternate cover. Which is fine! This is meant to be something special if you can attend an event. It's a brief salute to what was accomplished. It doesn't need a full retranslation or other alterations. I will admit, I would have appreciated some color pages inside as an extra bonus. Maybe an additional foreword from the creators or editor would be fun.

This means if someone isn't a huge fan and just wants the series, there's no penalty for skipping this special release. There's some value to that, too. The original Death Note manga isn't out of print, so someone could pick up volume 1 (or 2, or 3, or you get the idea). It means that the audience as a whole isn't massively missing out if something keeps them from getting to a convention. Likewise, if someone is a huge fan, the new cover could make it worth grabbing. Especially since if it is acquired at an event, there's no massive price mark-up. The back says $10, as usual.

It all means if you love Death Note, the Death Note 20th anniversary volume 1 is a fun keepsake. It honors the series with a detailed cover. You get to pick it up on special occasions. But if you're a new fan or don't need some special fanfare, the original volume 1 or Black Edition Volume 1 will be just as good.

The Death Note manga is handled outside Japan by Viz Media. The anime is on Crunchyroll. Netflix also offers a live-action adaptation.

All Starfield console commands and cheats

What are the Starfield console commands and cheat? We've all been guilty of it. You get to the shop and see the perfect piece of kit for your spacefarer; an absurdly large rifle that runs on the power of friendship. But what's that? You're short on credits. Typical. Nothing a quick console command can't solve, though.

As mentioned in our Starfield review, this is one huge game. While it's always advised to play games like Starfield without these boosts the first time around, you might want to get familiar with the Starfield console commands to instantly get the best Starfield weapons or shower your Starfield companions with your ill-gotten riches. Before you venture too far ahead, be warned that one of these commands reveals some late-game story information. Now, here's everything you need to know about Starfield cheats, every Starfield console command, and what they do.

     All Starfield religions explained

What are the Starfield religions? Everyone believes in something, even if you believe there's nothing. Throwing your lot in with a religion in Starfield not only gives you a whole host of allies devoted to the same goal, but it can also bestow you with the odd buff here and there. As we'll find out, though, these religions can also come with their own set of drawbacks.

With the full Starfield release date just over the horizon, it's time we all put some thought into who we're going to be in Bethesda's RPG. Will you be a reckless mercenary, only out for number one? Will you be a devotee to your god, and join one of the many Starfield religions? Or will you find your place within one of the Starfield factions? The scope of your journey is huge, and you really can be whoever you want to be – take whichever Starfield companions you want along for the ride.

     Best Starfield weapons and guns

What are the best Starfield weapons? Sure, space is pretty cool, but it's also pretty dangerous. While you can use your ship's turrets in interstellar combat to (hopefully) avoid being turned into nothing but space debris, you need the best gun and throwables on your person when coming face to face with foes.

You're going to need a vast arsenal of sci-fi weapons and Starfield guns to survive your journey through the stars, coming up against enemies like the Starfield Crimson Fleet pirates and various Starfield creatures. From modified shotguns and modern swords to futuristic laser weapons and electromagnetic blasters, there's a lot to think about when kitting out your grand explorer - here are just some of the best Starfield weapons with which to equip you and your Starfield ship.

     All Starfield factions and groups

What are the factions in Starfield? Many Starfield factions live in the Settled Systems, all with wildly different ideologies, areas of expertise, and fashion sense. While this upcoming space game will likely play into the fear of the unknown that's synonymous with the inky black expanse of the cosmos, it's still your fellow humans who pose the greatest threat to your survival.

When you begin your voyage in the space game, you do so on behalf of Constellation, one of a number of Starfield factions. As a new Constellation recruit, it's your mission in one of the best PC games to seek out and expose the secrets of the known galaxy. As we edge nearer to the full Starfield release date, you may come face-to-face with one of the other factions during your travels, and first impressions are vitally important if you want certain Starfield companions to join your cause.

Valve stamps out Dota 2 smurfs and threatens main account bans

As Valve bans 90,000 Dota 2 smurf accounts, the Steam developer says the use of alternate accounts to dodge your intended rank, cheat, or grief other players is "not welcome in Dota." It adds that every Dota 2 smurf account banned in this wave has been traced back to its owner's main Steam account, and that in future instances punishments for smurfing in the MOBA will extend to your main account as well.

Starfield Start Screen isn't the UI Problem

If there is one hilarious discourse that appeared prior to the early access launch of Starfield, it was the one about its UI. More specifically, the title screen of the game. The massive space RPG has a rather simplistic start screen, showing the name, a planet, and your various menu options on the left. But what if I told you the start screen in Starfield isn't the problem?

In fact, I would argue that the Starfield start screen is fun, simple, and attractive in its own way, despite certain developer opinions. While I immediately noticed how subtle it is when I first booted up the game, it by no means bothered me. However, there are other parts of the Starfield UI, which are arguably much more problematic.

[caption id="attachment_981591" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Starfield UI problem is not the start screen Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

Starfield's Font and Menus are the True UI Issues

For one, the font size in Starfield is horrific. The actual font style isn't great on its own, but the font size is the true culprit here. Sure, there is a way to increase the font size for the menus in the settings, but this only affects the actual menus for some reason.

There is no way to increase the font subtitles for things like conversations and dialogue further from my experience, which is a shame since the menu text has this option. It resulted in me often playing the game through remote play on my tablet or sitting up close to my TV, even with my prescription glasses on.

If that isn't enough, the general menus in Starfield are frustrating to deal with. They are quite bland, and traversing the menus is troublesome. I often had issues figuring out which item category I was browsing at the moment due to how the sections stack on one another. I would have to back out, make sure I was in the right spot where boost packs are versus the helmets and so on.

To make matters worse, some items are classified in truly bizarre manner. For instance, you have Digipicks, the items you use to pick locks and computers, in the miscellaneous section where mostly junk is found. This is a problem when you can accidentally sell Digipicks quite easily to sellers when trying to get rid of junk. This was the only item there that I would often accidentally sell, so it would have made more sense in a place like resources where all of the items are generally valuable.

It isn't to say I didn't enjoy my time with Starfield. On the contrary, it is one of the best RPGs in the past decade. But it could have been much smoother and more entertaining with some key UI improvements and more accessibility options in general. After all, the Starfield start screen isn't the issue.

Starfield is available for the Xbox Series X and PC.

The Jujutsu Kaisen English Learning Book

Picture this: you're sitting at your desk, trying to force your brain to figure out what the heck a "reduced relative clause" is all the while your sibling is watching the latest Jujutsu Kaisen episode in the next room having the time of their life. This is why products like The Jujutsu Kaisen English Learning Book appear in Japan.

When it comes to English-learning materials, it seems like Japan has been trying to incorporate as much pop-culture as possible to help inspire their youth to further their studies. (For example, there's a Hololive English textbook.) The latest attempt is a book using Jujutsu Kaisen materials. Now, instead of learning about modal verbs (whatever that is), you can learn the proper way to pronounce "Divergent Fist."

I'll be honest, when I first bought the Learn English with Jujutsu Kaisen book, I was skeptical. It's hard to imagine there being any useful information for English learners to be gleamed from learning the sound effects "crackle, crackle, crackle." While the book does cover some random things that the average English learner would likely never use, it seem like it would do a lot of good.

While I don't typically approve of using things like anime or manga to learn a foreign language, I can't help but admit that this book does a good job of teaching pronunciation. From Todo's "Boogie Woogie" to Megumi's "Ten Shadows Techniques," the book does a surprisingly good job at teaching its readers the correct pronunciation of the sorcerers' cursed techniques. One of the things that anyone learning a new language usually struggles with is where to put the stress on a word. It's a difficult part of language learning that even longtime learners struggle with. Learn English with this Jujutsu Kaisen book gives the readers the name of the cursed technique in English, along with the pronunciation in Japanese with the parts of the word that are stressed in bold lettering. For example, Nobara's technique of "Straw Doll Technique: Hairpin" would be "StRAw Doll TechNIque: HAirpin". This helps the readers get a feeling for how words are stressed in spoken English. Thought it isn't a great replacement for a good teacher, it isn't bad.

The book also gives 1-to-1 translations of pages in the book. This is, unfortunately, my least favorite part of The Jujutsu Kaisen English Learning Book. Rather than give 1-to-1 word meanings, they go for phrases. In my mind, it is more beneficial to give a word-to-word translation, and then show the readers why you decided to translate something one way to convey meaning in the target language. In this case, we have entire phrases the learners have to look up themselves.

Perhaps my favorite part of the book lies on the "Tip" pages. These pages have random tidbits of information that are actually quite useful for learners. My favorite is probably the first one in the book. It goes over "spoken" English. It focuses on shortening words like "want to" to "wanna" and "got to" to "gotta." This is something that I've seen, as a learner of a foreign language, that people who study at school lack. It's rare that a school would ever test you on these sorts of things, so people rarely get a chance to learn it. But these are the types of things that extra-curricular learning materials, such as Learn English with Jujutsu Kaisen are great for.

While, for obvious reasons, I doubt it will get an English translation. I do think this The Jujutsu Kaisen English Learning Book proves that the Japanese-learning crowd could benefit from an in-depth Japanese-learning book built around a popular manga. However, I would only recommend that type of material for intermediate to advanced learners.

The Jujutsu Kaisen English Learning Book is available in Japan.
