In a recent interview with Famitsu, FFXIV Producer Naoki Yoshida (or Yoshi-P) talked about the process of creating the newly revealed Pictomancer job for the Dawntrail expansion. The developer also explained the decision to make Krile a Pictomancer. [Thanks, Famitsu!]
When creating a new job, Yoshi-P said that the Final Fantasy XIV team thinks about the role first, not the job itself. He added that DPS is by far the most popular role, so when creating jobs for a new expansion, the team cannot exclude them. Since tank and healer jobs were the last to be added, they decided to add two DPS jobs for Dawntrail, as this would not disrupt the game's balance.
The team did not decide on Pictomancer from the beginning, but it was high among the options they were pondering. The developers considered the idea of a job that would replace performing attacks with the action of "drawing." Eventually, they thought that Pictomancer would be the most fun and interesting job.
When asked if the team decided to make the character Krile Mayer Baldesion a Pictomancer due to her resemblance to Relm from Final Fantasy VI, Yoshi-P stated that this was not the case. However, he said that if people think that the team had planned to make Krile and Relm look similar from the beginning, that is proof that the FFXIV developers were able to work well as a team.
The reason behind Krile becoming a Pictomancer in FFXIV Dawntrail is related to her feelings during the Endwalker expansion. Yoshi-P said that when considering how she felt during 6.0, he knew that she would have wanted to be on the front lines with the rest of the Scions and the Warrior of Light. Yoshida had always wanted to represent these feelings in-game with a job change, but due to her role in the plot of Endwalker, the producer knew this would not have been possible until 7.0.
Final Fantasy XIV is available on PS4, PS5, and PC. The game will launch on Xbox Series X in Spring 2024. The Dawntrail expansion will be released for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC in Summer 2024.

The main trio from NieR Automata Ver1.1a will appear as miniature cat-like figures in crane game machines from January 19, 2024. You'll be able to find them in Sega Plaza stores in Japan.
In total, there are three variations of NieR Automata Ver1.1a miniature cat figures. You can get either A2, 9S, or 2B. It's unclear if they'll come in a blind box or a normal one or if you have to grab them using another method. Each figure looks like they're on their belly and taking a nap. They have a little tail as well behind them. At 5.5 x 4.5 centimeters in size, they're fairly small and can rest in the palm of your hand.
NieR Automata Ver1.1a is the anime adaptation of the 2017 action RPG NieR Automata. The story mostly covers the first half of the game, which makes it fairly accessible for those who have not played the popular Square Enix title. The story follows 2B and 9S, YoRHa androids, who are part of a proxy war between Machine Lifeforms and humanity.
NieR Automata is available on the PS4, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. NieR Automata Ver1.1a is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. You can get the 2B, 9S, and A2 figures from Sega Plaza starting January 19, 2024.

A new Precure series, Wonderful PreCure, will start airing on February 2, 2024. This time, a dog can transform into a Precure as well.

The main character is Iroha Inukai, and her pet dog is Komugi. It should be noted that Komugi appears above Iroha in the cast list. This implies that Komugi is more important than Iroha as a character. While on a walk, the two encounter a wild animal "whose heart was growling." They transform into PreCures to save it. While Komugi only barks in the trailer, she probably will be able to talk once she transforms into a (human) Precure.
Maria Naganawa will voice Komugi or Cure Wonderful. Her previous roles include Komekko in Konosuba, Shizuka in The 100 Girlfriends Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Love You, and Kanna Kamui in Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid. Atsumi Tanezaki will voice Iroha Inukai or Cure Friendy. Tanezaki's prominent roles include Anya in Spy x Family, Frieren in Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, and Emporio in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Wonderful PreCure will start airing in Japan on February 2, 2024. It's unclear at the time of writing which streaming service outside of Japan will offer it. The current PreCure, Hirogaru Sky, will run until January 28, 2024.

In an interview with Hobonichi, Shigesato Itoi (Earthbound) sat down with Shigeru Miyamoto (Mario, The Legend of Zelda) to discuss how Miyamoto came about with the idea and design for Pikmin. The full interview is not on the website as of the time of writing.
The interview starts with Itoi reaffirming with Miyamoto his policy regarding making video games. Miyamoto had always wanted to create video games that would provide more fun and include more ideas than how much they cost. This is because it could cost thousands of JPY to purchase a game. He also stated that in a development team, people offer ideas to each other to help them make things they couldn't have on their own. The Pikmin design is one of such collaborations.
While Miyamoto gave the general idea of what he wanted Pikmins to do and look like, the game's designer was the one who actually came up with the final product, including the leaf on the head. Miyamoto liked it a lot because Pikmins looked so confusing that you had to wonder about it. Did it drink water from its mouth or its head? Or perhaps it sucked up nutrients from its feet, like a plant? The next logical step was to decide what would happen to the leaf and the Pikmin after they die. Though the design is simple, much thought and conversation went into Nintendo's creation of the Pikmin.
Near the end of the interview, Miyamoto discusses how newer generations have affected Pikmin's design. Since you can see a lot more of the game now with higher-quality graphics, some older developers think that a Pikmin's eyes should move, or else it will look uncanny. While younger developers don't seem to think that, Miyamoto says they have their own sense of what's uncanny and what isn't and that it's interesting how you can see the generational gap here.
Pikmin 4 is now available on the Nintendo Switch.

Over the years, we've seen a wide range of titles come to Apple's game subscription service. Some are "plus" versions of existing mobile titles, while others are entirely new and even exclusive. But one thing that's increasingly come up is how Apple Arcade ended up packed with life sim games and titles like Animal Crossing.
It's something that sort of crept up on us. It started with a lot of farming sims. Nightmare Farm was among the first. Farm It is lighter on the "life" element, but definitely offers the farming. Cozy Groveended up basically being the first Animal Crossing kind of game on the service when it appeared in March 2021.
However, in recent months these additions accelerated. Stardew Valley+ showed up in the library in July 2023. The Apple Arcade exclusive Hello Kitty Island Adventure game is an Animal Crossing style life sim in which you help fellow villagers and visitors, decorate cabins, and enjoy island life while taking on quests. Japan Rural Life slipped out in 2023 under the radar, offering a Japanese farming and life sim. Disney Dreamlight Valley Arcade Edition showed up there as well, offering people the Disney take on the genre on a new platform. 2024 kicked off with Tamagotchi Adventure Kingdom. While it features more adventure elements and going around to locations helping people, there's crafting, resource management, and building up a campground.
And, when you think about it, the nature of Apple Arcade suits the genre. In the case of games like Stardew Valley or even Cozy Grove, we have established games that are full life sim experiences and keep people playing on a daily basis for hours. The nature of the service also encourages developers to issue regular updates to keep people coming back, which fits titles like Hello Kitty Island Adventure and Disney Dreamlight Valley. It also is a genre that is very accessible to other players.
The only downside is, it capitalizes on the addictive and compelling nature of these games to hook people into the subscription service. Especially if it is a title that does get regular updates with new items and characters. People will want to keep interacting with their virtual friends or tending their farms. It's $6.99 per month for Apple Arcade, and that cost certainly adds up. Especially in the case of something like Stardew Valley, Cozy Grove, or even Disney Dreamlight Valley, where a version of the game could be purchased on other platforms and be complete.
It is interesting to see this progression and embracing of life sims like Animal Crossing and farming games on Apple Arcade. It's certainly showing how tapping into a genre that captivates people and keeps them continually playing day after day can help. Plus, it does help for folks who like a particular genre and want to have an outlet to opt into a collection of such titles in one place. I do worry a bit about the idea of feeling compelled to keep paying such a fee, especially when some titles are available stand-alone on other platforms for a lower cost. However, in moderation or for brief periods it's a fun option and offers an opportunity to text out experiences or maybe relax for a month or two.

Stories that get into what happens after "the end" aren't uncommon. They might look at how society changes. We could see how a group of people adapt. But we don't often see how specific people are affected. Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's manga Frieren: Beyond Journey's End gets a little more specific by showing how one person is changed by an adventure. It involves quite the opportunity too. As the star, an elven mage named Frieren, is already hundreds of years old as the story "begins," we're seeing how someone that old can grow and change after adventuring and experiences. In turn, we see how her new allies develop as a result of being around her.
Frieren kicks off as a grand adventure ended. The hero Himmel and his allies Eisen the warrior, Frieren the mage, and Heiter the priest defeated the Demon King. The quartet journeyed together for 10 years. They aided people around the world and faced the Demon King's minions. As a way to cap it off, the group watches the Era Meteor Shower. When Frieren notes that she knows a better place to see it happen, they vow to meet again in 50 years.
And they do! But Frieren being an elf means a bit of a shock when it happens. Himmel, formerly handsome, tall, and young, is now a short old man. The corrupt, drunken priest became a bishop. The dwarf… well, is mostly the same since dwarves are like elves. The group has their moment, which is then followed by Himmel's death. It is then that things hit her. She only knew him ten years. Which, when measured by an elf, is no time at all. She realizes all the time she could have had, but didn't.
The rest of the first volume of the Frieren manga follows the elven mage as she essentially finds a purpose for herself. She always had a goal of sorts. After the initial adventure, she said she'd explore the Central Lands for 100 years to learn more about magic. But after Himmel's death, it reads as an opportunity. She has a chance to not make the same mistakes. There's also the potential to set out on a new quest, perhaps doing things differently and making the connections she missed.
Right away, we start to see a change. It begins when she again meets Heiter. This time, reuniting involves an opportunity to learn from a tome and perhaps take on an apprentice. She's hesitant about the idea. Especially since the student is only a young girl. But as she sets about deciphering the book Heiter offered, time passes. She ends up connecting with the child. Frieren spends more time with the old friend. Before we—and perhaps she—know it, Frieren is saying both "goodbye" and "hello" again.
It also means it changes her perspective. Given her lifespan, Frieren wouldn't have a problem solving mysteries and accomplishing missions over the courses of years. She spent four at Heiter's deciphering the book like it was nothing. Once Fern and her are traveling, the two spend half a year searching for a specific flower. They spend months cleaning up a coast. But for her, it's no time at all. Not to mention while each chapter's mission is being accomplished, we see hints of what led to her taking on that task.
Plus, we also have to consider that we don't even know exactly how long Frieren will live, as we don't know exactly how long elves live in the series. The manga only suggests they live for hundreds of years. When we meet her, she's lived for over a millennium, which is 1,000 years. There's no indication of how much longer she could be around. We know Kraft is still around as of later volumes, and he's an elf who is even older than she is. So even with as many manga volumes and anime episodes there are, it may take some time before we truly understand.
Each chapter of the first volume of the manga is a look at how Frieren's relationship with Himmel changed her. How it is influencing her future. We see her new purpose guide her in various ways. It also leads her to behave differently with both new and old friends. So then, by the time this volume ends, we see a new reason for her next journey. And it might leave you wondering, will she get that extra time she's hoping for? Considering how long elves apparently live in Frieren, we get quite a bit of time to see what Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe do with the series.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End manga volume 1-9 are available from Viz Media. Volume 10 will debut on February 20, 2024. The first and second cour of the anime are streaming on Crunchyroll.

There's a One Piece anime theme song performance on The First Take, with Hiroshi Kitadani appearing to sing the first opening song "We Are." It aired on the channel on January 8, 2024, and it already passed 600,000 views in its first four hours.
To set the stage for the performance, the background has Monkey D. Luffy's Straw Hat on top of a treasure chest and some crates. After Kitadani's initial exclamation, the full band kicks up and he begins singing.

The First Take is a YouTube channel on which singers perform some especially notable songs or tracks in a single take. Anime theme songs often appear on it. For example, FLOW performed the Naruto Shippuden track "Sign" on the channel. Man with a Mission and milet appeared to sing "Kizuna no Kiseki" from the Demon Slayer anime.
In 2023, there was also a first on The First Take involving Hoshimachi Suisei. The Cover performer was the first Vtuber to perform on the channel. She performed "Stellar Stellar" there in January 2023. Then in February 2023, she returned to the channel to sing "Michizure."
The One Piece anime is streaming on Crunchyroll, and the Egghead arc has begun. The manga is handled outside Japan by Viz Media. A new The One Piece anime adaptation is coming to Netflix. Also, the live-action adaptation is on Netflix, with a second season on the way.

Massive Monster and Devolver Digital announced the new Cult of the Lamb update, which adds offspring eggs, Disciples, a Tailor, and the Sin resource, arrives January 16, 2024. Sins of the Flesh will be a free update for all platforms.
First, the new resource in Cult of the Lamb is Sin. Players can earn it via the Drum Circle rhythm game, having Drinkhouse drinks, and having Followers head to the Mating Tent. Sin can then be used for new Doctrines and Rituals.
As for the Mating Tent, that is how people can get offspring eggs in Cult of the Lamb. A pair of Followers who go there can help create a new child. However, as the PlayStation Blog announcement noted, that egg can also be eaten by the community.
There is also the new equipment and outfits. The Tailor will be where people can get clothing for Followers. The Blunderbuss will be the new ranged gun for the Lamb to use.

Idea Factory International announced it will release Hakuoki otome games we've seen five times before in English again, this time on the Switch as Chronicles of Wind and Blossom. Kyoto Windsand Edo Blossoms will release digitally and physically, and there will be an Eastasiasoft Limited Edition.
Hakuoki is the story of a young woman named Chizuru who is searching for her missing father. She dressed herself up as a man and heads to Kyoto to find out what happened to him. She ends up encountering the Shinsengumi and joining their ranks, as they share a common goal. However, as this is an alternate reality series, the Shinsengumi here are also vampire-like supernatural figures known as Furies due to a creation of Chizuru's father. Later releases split the game up into two parts, Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms, while also adding additional love interests.

We've seen this storyline, both in the original form and the two part adaptation, many times before. The game first showed up on the PS2 in Japan in 2008. However, since then it's appeared in English on the PSP in 2012, 3DS in 2013, PS3 in 2014, mobile devices in 2015, and Vita and PC as Kyoto Winds in 2017 and Edo Blossoms in 2018). This new version will include an updated localization.
Meanwhile, we've yet to see Hakuoki SSL: Sweet School Life, the alternate reality storyline set in modern times with everyone as students and teachers, released worldwide. It appeared on the Vita in 2014 and Switch in 2023 in Japan.
As for the Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom standard and limited retail editions, those will be Play-Asia exclusives. Idea Factory International said pre-orders will open on January 11, 2024. The LE will come with stickers of the twelve love interests, an art book, and the soundtrack on a single CD.
Hakuoki: Chronicles of Wind and Blossom will bring the Kyoto Winds and Edo Blossoms otome games to the Switch in 2024. The game is immediately available on multiple other platforms worldwide.

The Hololive New Year Cup Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tournament for the Cover Vtubers was held January 7-8, 2024, and Tokoyami Towa won. Hoshimachi Suisei came in second, with Todoroki Hajime taking third place.
The top 12 finalists for the competition included a mix of members from the Japanese and English branches of the company. Here's who managed to make it in, and which place they took in the tournament.
As a reminder, a few of these competitors were entirely new to both Hololive and the competition. Hololive EN Advent's Bijou and ReGLOSS' Todoraki Hajime are two Vtubers who joined the company in 2023.
There was also a Zako Cup where the players who earned the fewest points go to determine who is the worst of the worst. In the past, Yuzuki Choco's taken last place in it. However, she didn't participate in the 2024 tournament. However, this year Hololive DEV_IS ReGLOSS Vtuber Hiodoshi Ao took the crown. That came up at about the 2 hour and 55 minute mark of the stream.

The Boy and the Heron has won Best Animated Motion Picture at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards. The ceremony was held on January 7, 2024, where Studio Ghibli's latest movie won alongside the likes of Barbie and Oppenheimer.
While The Boy and the Heron won the Animated Picture award, no one from Studio Ghibli was available to accept it in person. Instead, award presenter Florence Pugh accepted the award on behalf of the producers. Pugh appears in the English dub of the movie as Kiriko.
The Boy and the Heron was one of six nominees for the Best Animated Motion Picture Golden Globe. The other nominees included Elemental, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Super Mario Bros Movie, Suzume and Wish. It is the first non-American winner of the award since its debut in 2006. It's the first time Studio Ghibli have received a nomination for the category. Along with Suzume, it's only the second time in the award's history that has seen a Japanese movie nominated, after Mirai's 2018 nomination.
In addition to the Best Animated Picture award, Joe Hisaishi's score for The Boy and the Heron was nominated for Best Original Score. However, it lost out to Oppenheimer, which also won awards in four other categories.
The Boy and the Heron has already been a huge success around the world. It gave Ghibli its largest opening weekend in Japan and is currently grossing 8.7 billion yen overall in its home country. Globally, it has made $138 million. In addition to its Golden Globe win, the movie has also won multiple local critics' association awards across the US, and is nominated for a Critics' Choice Award for Best Animated Feature.
