     Best games like Minecraft 2024

What are the best games like Minecraft? Way back in 2010, a little game called Minecraft proved to be a revelation in video games, inspiring a whole generation of players and developers in the process. It's a blocky sandbox world that essentially lets us create anything we like and share it with our friends. The cultural phenomenon sold millions of copies, even before Microsoft acquired developer Mojang Studios in 2014.

Since its initial release, there have been a plethora of Minecraft clones. Each does their best to match one of the best PC games of all time, but few have really delivered the whole package like Minecraft does. Sometimes, though, you may only want part of the Minecraft experience, augmented with other aspects that make the Minecraft-like unique. That's where this guide to the best games like Minecraft comes in. All the games on this list are similar to Minecraft in some fashion, be they crafting games, building games, adventure games, or an altogether different part of what makes Minecraft our favorite blocky game.

Enormous Half-Life mod is basically an entirely new game

There will, one day, be a full, official, and new mainline Half-Life game. If we can get Half-Life Alyx, and the big 25th anniversary rework of the original, then surely, eventually, we can get Half-Life 3. In the meantime, however, trust modders to keep the Gordon Freeman and Black Mesa fires burning. As Valve's classic FPS turns a quarter of a century old (I just grew a hundred more gray hairs typing that), a gigantic new mod transforms Half-Life into basically an entirely new game.      Is Palworld on Game Pass?

Is Palworld on Game Pass? Palworld joins an ever-growing list of monster-taming games that seek to capture the magic of Game Freak's genre-defining creature collector – but with a twist. Sure, you can send your freshly tamed Pals into battle, but you can also subject them to a life of labor on assembly lines, and even eat them if you're feeling peckish.

Palworld's fresh, if morally questionable approach to creature collection may pique your interest in the RPG game, but how do you know if this virtual exploitation is a step too far? Palworld on Game Pass is your answer, allowing you to test your monster-taming limits without spending more than the platform's monthly subscription fee. Here's the latest on whether Palworld is coming to Game Pass ahead of the Palworld release date, and if so, when you expect the Pokémon PC game to arrive on the platform.

Next DBD update – Alan Wake Chapter release date

When is the next Dead by Daylight update? Seven years into the life of the popular asymmetrical horror game, many of our horror favorites have been engulfed by The Fog, from Michael Myers and Ghostface, to Silent Hill's Cheryl Mason and even Nic Cage. So who's next to walk into DBD's realms?

With around four new chapters a year, it's a wonder the team at Behaviour are able to come up with new perks and powers for the new DBD killers and survivors. Somehow they do, and the year eight Dead by Daylight roadmap confirms a total of nine new characters. Following original killer The Singularity, shock survivor Nic Cage, and the good guys from Chapter 30, Alan Wake is next to enter the fog. Once you've taken a look at what to expect from the Alan Wake DBD release date, make sure you've redeemed the latest DBD codes for Bloodpoints and cosmetics.

Palworld release date, early access launch, trailers, and latest news

When is the Palworld release date? The monster-taming genre might have been popularized on Nintendo handhelds and retro home consoles, but it's enjoyed growing popularity on PC in recent years thanks to the likes of Temtem, Coromon, and Cassette Beasts. Palworld is the latest addition to this beloved niche, and it might be the strangest one yet.

Palworld is, in short, Pokémon with guns. Sure, you can be the very best, like no one ever was – but in this iteration of the creature collector, you can enforce that title with an assault rifle. If that sounds bizarre, wait until you see the assembly lines. If you're ready to get stuck into an RPG that embraces surrealism and satire with all the staple hallmarks of quintessential Pokémon PC games, then be sure to mark the Palworld release date on your calendar.

Annoying Dead by Daylight killers are finished, as BHVR overhauls gens

Dead by Daylight killers, if you love kicking the last three generators, and leaving survivors to run in circles while you keep the match going forever, and ever, and ever, I'm afraid your days are numbered. The stalwart three-gen strategy, scourge of the DBD survivor, is targeted and nerfed by a transformative new update from BHVR. The new Dead by Daylight PTB is live. Alan Wake is the next survivor. But generators have been completely transformed, rendering the often frustrating strategy of repeatedly kicking the final three impossible.

The best retro games on PC

What are the best retro games on PC? The gaming industry has come a long way over the last decade or two, but sometimes it's soothing to go back to the basics. Games-as-a-service titles like Fortnite and Overwatch have set the benchmark over the last few years by adding new content and cosmetics over an annual plan - something that has been adapted or originated by plenty of other studios, too.

It's not all sunshine, battle passes, and dabbing, though. There's still space for games in the modern day that buck these trends by putting on a pair of rose-tinted pair specs, from Doom-like FPS games shooters to love letters to the early days of the World Wide Web. These retro games are, believe it or not, new, but bring back fond memories of the past. If you're after the real deal instead, don't worry, we've got you covered with a list of our favorite old games, too.

When the Ryzen 9 5950X debuted in 2020, it was a staggeringly strong productivity and gaming CPU, with 16 cores and 32 threads of Zen 3 power for a princely £750. A little over three years later and next-gen Zen 4 CPUs are firmly here, but the 5950X remains the most powerful productivity CPU for the venerable AM4 platform.

That makes the 5950X a tempting upgrade option for anyone using an older Ryzen processor that wants to keep using their existing motherboard and RAM, and today this CPU has breached a new low-water mark: £360 on Amazon UK, 52% off its original recommended retail price. (It's also a nearly-as-good 50% off at the US.)

I will not lie to you, reader, I used up about 95% of today's remaining creative energy/caffeine on that headline joke, but let's charge our flashlights, sharpen our hooks and struggle on through the body copy anyway. Remedy's Alan Wake is joining Behaviour Interactive's Dead By Daylight as a playable Survivor, having been conjured from his writing desk by the latter game's villainous Entity.

Mind you, I'm a little unclear on the causality here. The press release includes a cheeky quote from a lost Alan Wake manuscript in which the perennially troubled horror author suggests that he is the creator of Dead By Daylight's universe, not Behaviour Interactive. "As I searched for a way out, memories of a script I wrote for Night Springs about a fog-engulfed place flooded back," it reads. "Surrounded by the same fog, I became a pawn - trapped. I must find a way out. Rewriting that script is key." Oh Alan. Have you tried laying off the coffee and going for a stroll, now and then?

If you've ever been to Shinjuku station in Japan, you know what it's like to be transported to a dizzying realm of limbs and tickets and signage with myriad squiggly lines that make about as much sense as rainbow spaghetti that's been hurled at a white rectangle. You, quite literally, need to plunge yourself into an entire city within a city to get from one place to another.

Surface from the chaos, though, and it can feel like quite the achievement. Small horror game The Exit 8 captures this sense of elation perfectly, as well as all the subtleties that come from navigating a crash of noise. Acts! It used to be just those old-timey theatre productions that had them, but as in many other respects, videogames have nipped through a stage exit and stolen theatre's underpants. One act isn't the same as another, however: take the third act of Baldur's Gate 3, which many players feel isn't a patch, or indeed a hotfix changelog, on the thunderously well-received RPG's first two acts. According to senior RPG designer Anna Guxens, Larian have been following the reaction and are thinking about how they can handle the third act's "drastic" tone shift better in future releases. It's a timely observation, because in separate news, Larian's CEO Swen Vincke has posted that he's "figured out" the first act of Larian's next unannounced project.

It's been a good handful of years for fans of secret-ridden games. The sort of secrets that make the game world feel huge and unknowable and transform the post-game into a scavenger hunt more akin to ARGs than classic secret endings. After 2021's meta deckbuilder Inscryption, and enigmatic Zeldalike Tunic a year later, 2023 brought us Cocoon. Set in a cryptic world of insect-like aliens and their impossible machines, Cocoon is a puzzle game all about mystery.

What best sells the mystery is a minority of puzzles that are so well-hidden, that a lot players might never know they exist. Those are the optional challenges that guard the way to Cocoon's secret ending. Any given player might stumble on one or two clues for those puzzles, before shrugging and finding their way back to the main story. But as the game goes on and the clues remain unresolved, those players will wonder what other secrets are hidden around them. I talked to Jeppe Carlsen and Edwin Kho from developer Geometric Interactive, to learn why those puzzles were made, and how it feels to watch a community track them down in real time.

pochacco sanrio build-a-bear

Build-A-Bear has released yet another Sanrio gift set, with Pochacco taking center stage this time. You can order the set for $47.50.

The new Build-A-Bear plush set features the Pochacco plush, a blue hoodie, and black shorts. There is a little paw design on Pochacco's hand with BAB in the middle for Build-A-Bear. As for the clothes, while the black shorts are fairly nondescript, the blue hoodie has Pochacco's name on it.

The shirt also features a picture of him kicking a soccer ball. In Sanrio lore, Pochacco is sporty and likes playing basketball and soccer, which explains the shirt's design. Build-A-Bear's description for the gift set also references Pochacco's hobbies.

You can get a closer look at the plush set in the gallery below:

When you check out Build-A-Bear's website, you can see that Pochacco is not the only Sanrio plush from the company. Previously, you could also make plushes of Pompompurin and Kuromi. All of these plushes were the same as the Pochacco, where they had the BAB paw and came with a shirt. However, these sets also came with an extra toy. Pompompurin came with Muffin, and Kuromi came with Baku. The Pochacco set from Build-A-Bear does not come with any friends.

The Build-A-Bear Pochacco plush is available from the online store in North America.

Review: CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 is a charming VR experience with a surprising amount of depth

In CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1, you take control of an adorable cookie hero named GingerBrave. The freshly-baked protagonist begins a journey to fulfill a prophecy to take down the Darkest Lord Cookie, who is trying to enslave cookiekind. Although it's a simple concept on the surface, the charming fairy tale is a fun action-adventure VR title with a surprising amount of depth to its gameplay and progression system.

As I prepared to dive into CookieRun, I was initially apprehensive due to having a sensitive stomach regarding virtual reality. However, to my delight, I found CookieRun an overall smooth experience. The game has pretty standard controls, where you move with the Meta Quest's left joystick while panning the camera with your right hand. If there was ever a moment where I felt disoriented, the game allowed me to re-center myself by teleporting to the location where I wanted to go with a click of a button. For those who struggle with heavy motion in VR titles, I would recommend using the teleport feature if you don't want to move around too quickly. The mechanic also works if you are afraid of heights, as you can warp down a ladder or mountain when descending them without having to look down.

One thing I really appreciate about this game is the clever design decisions they implemented to ensure the game's motion doesn't become too much for players. For instance, during certain platform sections, CookieRun transitions from its first-person view to a side camera angle, where players can control GingerBrave through a quick-time event to jump. Think of it as a child looking down while moving his toys around the room. These gameplay sections are still fun and charming for adults while also perfect for younger audiences. But it's also just a clever solution to avoid motion sickness, as the game could have quickly turned into Mirror's Edge for the worst.

CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 takes advantage of the Meta Quest 3's controllers in a few different ways. For instance, there are many sections in the game where you have to climb platforms, and squeezing the controller will result in your character gripping and holding on to things in the game's world. This actually went a long way to make the game feel immersive in spots, as even simple tasks, such as climbing a ladder, were a physical experience you wouldn't usually get in most console FPS games. Actions like this aren't automated either, as you have to physically grab onto each step or stone with your hand to ascend.

Most of the game's combat centers around your trusty candy cane weapon, which acts as a sword. The Meta Quest's excellent tracking makes fights seamless, as you feel each blade swing with little to no lag. Your Candy Cane and swords aren't just for whacking enemies on the head, though, as you can actually deflect enemies' attacks back at them. If combat ever feels overwhelming, the game also lets you take a defensive stance by holding your weapons in the air as a shield to block all incoming damage.

Review: CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 is a charming VR experience with a surprising amount of depth
Image via Studio FreshDoh!

Although the combat is pretty simplified at first, I was actually surprised when the game introduced mechanics such as enemy weakness. After breaking a foe down enough, for example, you are given a visual cue to show you where to hit an enemy with your swords to land maximum damage. Instead of just flailing around to reduce each encounter to a hack n' slash fest, the game requires some strategy if you want to defeat enemies quickly. As you progress, you also get access to a slingshot for long-ranged combat, and you can even acquire different ammo with unique attack properties. So, despite the game's cartoony world on the surface, it does actually have some depth!

Speaking of depth, the CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 also has crafting. After collecting enough materials from the overworld or defeating enemies, you can upgrade your weapons by crafting new swords. There are even five tiers to this system. So the higher your weapon power is, the more damage you will be dishing out. While this is an overall pretty simplistic system, I, again, really appreciate that Studio FreshDoh! added these features to flesh this out into a full action adventure experience. It could have easily been an on-the-rails hack and slash, but there is a decent-sized progression system here.

Review: CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 is a charming VR experience with a surprising amount of depth
Image via Studio FreshDoh!

The only major complaint I have about CookieRun: The Darkest Night is that it's a pretty short experience. My save file was around three hours by the time I reached the end. And I usually play slower than most players! However, its length is pretty typical for most VR titles in this category, and the game is only priced at $24. So, given its low cost, I actually think it's a pretty great experience, especially if you have younger kids that you want to introduce to the FPS genre. It also should be pointed out that this is Chapter 1 of the story, with the second part scheduled to release in Summer 2024. So there is more to come.

I do wish that combat had a bit more variety. While you get magical properties such as higher-powered swords, I kept thinking that the game would really benefit from having a handful of spells as well. For example, it would have been awesome if gripping your Meta Quest controller built up a ball of fire in your hand that you could throw at enemies. Although the story is just at its beginning in Chapter 1, so perhaps the game can add more features as the plot progresses in its second part.

Review: CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 is a charming VR experience with a surprising amount of depth
Image via Studio FreshDoh!

What Studio FreshDoh! has done to transform the mobile running game franchise into a fully fleshed-out adventure title is actually really impressive. While veteran RPG fans may find CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 to be more on the easy side, I think the game's translation into virtual reality makes it worth the price of admission. As a VR experience, this is a fun three-hour campaign with just enough depth to its combat and gameplay systems that it will leave players wanting Chapter 2. If you are a fan of old-school N64 platformers such as Banjo Kazooie, CookieRun offers a charming world of characters worth hanging out in.

CookieRun: The Darkest Night Chapter 1 is available on the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro.

See Gran in the New Granblue Fantasy: Relink Character Trailer

Cygames kicked off a Granblue Fantasy: Relink character trailer series with Gran, one of the two main leads. The brief clip focuses on showing him in battle.

In both the mobile game and this new adventure, players can choose between Gran or Djeeta as their avatar. Both wield swords and use similar sorts of attacks. He's the male version of the main character, who ends up meeting Lyria and becoming part of a quest to save the world.

The first Granblue Fantasy: Relink character trailer highlights the English dub for Gran. He's voiced by Kyle McCarley, who is reprising his role from the Granblue Fantasy Versus fighting games. People may recognize him as 9S from NieR Automata, Lan Di from Shenmue 3, Ei in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and both Alm and Soren in the Fire Emblem series. The Japanese voice actor for the character is Yuki Ono, who also played the character in Granblue Fantasy Versus and is Touma in Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE, Josuke Higashikata in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and Kyosuke in Yu-Gi-Oh 5D.

Here's the full video. It begins with Gran attacking enemies while Lyria watches and offers support. After that, we see him working alongside Katalina. From there, we get to see him use skills like Miserable Mist and Tempest Blade.

Baldur's Gate 3 Hotfix 16

Larian released Hotfix 16 for Baldur's Gate 3. The patch notes revealed a range of fixes and changes, including the ability to access quest items regardless of where they're stored.

The main change announced for Baldur's Gate 3 Hotfix 16 is the ability to retrieve quest items from anywhere. This will apply regardless of whether the item is on a party member, in the camp chest or in the pockets of a character you've left in the camp. This quality-of-life change will prevent quest progression being blocked without needing to do some inventory management first.

Other changes include a few adjustments to story quests, particularly Karlach's. In addition, a few bosses have had some adjustments and fixes. This includes one late-game boss fight that has been "cheating" due to a bug where some units ignored the turn-based mode. There are also a few adjustments to the epilogue, including a fix to a Shadowheart dialog tree which was only offering players one choice.

As with previous hotfixes, Hotfix 16 also addresses some of the bugs within Baldur's Gate 3. This includes a bug that caused the game to become unresponsive for more kleptomaniac players stealing too much at once. Also a bug removing the appearance of naked people during the Dream Visitor's first appearance when players are controlling multiple avatars.

Most importantly, Hotfix 16 has fixed a few save issues within the game. It's not clear how much this will improve the save game issue plaguing Baldur's Gate 3 players on Xbox, however.

Baldur's Gate 3 is out now for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Hololive Vtuber Hakos Baelz Taking a Break While Moving

Hakos Baelz, a Hololive EN Vtuber who is part of the Promise group and formerly of Council, will be on a brief break. She announced on social media that she's moving to Japan during January 2024.

Here is Baelz's official announcement. She noted that this will be a brief break and said that she "will try to stream." She also cited that in addition to the move, some of the other things that will keep her busy over the next few days and weeks will be finding a place to live, singing, and preparations for next month.

https://twitter.com/hakosbaelz/status/1744572940447064079

Her last stream before the break was held on January 8, 2024. That was an unarchived karaoke stream. Prior to that, she did participate in the 2024 Hololive New Year's Cup. However, she didn't make it into the final 12 competitors, though she did note before that "I just need to beat IRyS." You can still watch an archived stream of her performance during the races.

Another thing Hakos Baelz is planning is a Hololive EN Vtuber cover of the song "Mind Craft." That will involve every member of the English branch performing together. It's been delayed a few times, and there's no set release date for it yet.

Gravity Rush Movie Teased Patapon project

Sony teased first looks at both the Gravity Rush movie and a new Patapon project. Sony showed brief clips of both projects during a presentations at CES 2024.

The teaser for the Gravity Rush movie came during the Sony CES 2024 press conference. A presentation for new visual arts studio Torchlight showed off behind the scenes shots for various projects. One of these projects was the Gravity Rush movie adaptation. The concept shots show a blonde character, likely the game's protagonist Kat, leaping off a floating island towards a red dragon creature. There is also a clip of an actress doing motion capture for the aerial acrobatics. The visual style in the clips is more realistic than the games it's based on, but it's likely these visuals are not final.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMxaYHisuIg&ab_channel=Sony-Global

It wasn't the only project based on a Sony Japan Studio IP teased at CES 2024 though. A separate Torchlight presentation repeated the Gravity Rush clips, accompanied by a clip of a mysterious Patapon project. This clip featured the Patapons battling a mammoth, alongside its counterpart in the original game. This clip also has a different visual style, using 3D models instead of the flat 2D of the PSP games. It's unclear if this clip is for a new game or an adaptation.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHFlBQVZ7HA&t=150s&ab_channel=Sony-Global

Sony have released few details about either project to date. The Gravity Rush movie was quietly announced in 2022, with director Anna Mastro and writer Emily Jerome attached. However, the Patapon project is a new reveal with no further information at present.

Due to the closure of Japan Studio, neither of the original teams are currently at Sony. Gravity Rush creator Keiichiro Toyama founded Bokeh Studio, who are currently working on the horror game Slitterhead. Meanwhile, the Patapon team recently crowdfunded a spiritual successor, Ratatan.

Due to their early development stages, neither the Gravity Rush movie or the Patapon project have announced release dates.

A Honkai: Star Rail GeForce Now release is on the way, as are the eventual additions of Diablo IV and Overwatch 2.

NVidia announced that Honkai: Star Rail will join the GeForce Now service. There's no exact release date for it, but the company and HoYoVerse both noted it is "coming soon."

As a reminder, GeForce Now is NVidia's cloud gaming service. It allows people to stream games they own on PCs, mobile devices, and TVs. It also means not needing to patch. This means all someone would need for Honkai: Star Rail is an existing account for the game and to be part of GeForce Now, and when updates would appear they would automatically be ready whenever someone streams the game.

This will mark the second HoYoVerse game on GeForce Now. The first was Genshin Impact. It joined the service back in June 2023. The company didn't note if Zenless Zone Zero, its next title, will also be a part of it. However, its previous game Honkai Impact 3rd isn't a part of the library.

The Honkai: Star Rail announcement was one of multiple CES 2024 GeForce Now reveals. Activision Blizzard games like Diablo IV and Overwatch 2 will join the service as well. Like the HoYoVerse game, those are only listed as "coming soon." People in Japan will also soon be able to start playing, and all users will also be able to buy Priority and Ultimate day passes starting in February 2024.

Honkai: Star Rail is available now on the PS5, PC, and mobile devices.

Well, those days are gone now. You see, before you were instructed to enter your in-game AFK Arena profile and input all the available codes. It was easy but also a bit annoying due to the UI limitations and stability. Nowadays, redeeming codes in AFK Arena has been completely revamped, so take notes: here is how to redeem codes in AFK Arena: First of all, you need to visit the AFK Arena Redemption page. That is redemption as in "redeem" codes. Once you visit it, it will ask you for your UID. You can find this by entering the game and clicking on your profile.      Destiny 2 Peacekeepers Exotic Armor Guide Featured ImageThe Peacekeepers is an Exotic Leg Armor piece for Titans that players can earn in Destiny 2. It's a useful piece of gear that reloads stowed Submachine Guns and massively improves your handling. Here's you can get them for yourself in Destiny 2. Where to find the Peacekeepers in Destiny 2 The Peacekeepers can be found within any Exotic Engram earned through Ritual Activities in Destiny 2. This is of course dependent on you playing as a Titan when unlocking the Engram. Screenshot: PC Invasion It can also appear as an item sold by Xur when he appears on weekends but due to the huge pool of available items, this is a rarity. It's worth watching for what he has in stock anyway though. And once you've unlocked the Peacekeepers in Destiny 2, you can reroll them again via Red War Leg Decrypt...

Baldur's Gate 3 Characters That Should've Been RomanceableThere are tons of companions you can romance in the game, and some that can't be but should be. For that reason, we've created a list of 10 Baldur's Gate 3 characters that should've been romanceable. While I understand that not every NPC deserves a romantic storyline, there are so many possibilities in an alternate universe that would be incredible. And no, I'm not choosing Isobel or Dame Aylin — they're in a very happy relationship with each other that I refuse to break. Baldur's Gate 3: 10 characters that should be romanceable Screenshot: PC Invasion Dammon Dammon is a truly underrated character in BG3. This Tiefling serves as a blacksmith and helps Karlach tame her Infernal Engine. He never really asks for payment for the work he does with Karlach. He helps because he's a good friend. I found Dammon to be a wonderful character that I wished to get to know more. Based solely on the way he a...

Is Palworld Multiplayer Co Op Explained YesThis Pokémon-inspired open-world game lets you farm crops, craft items, and collect adorable Pals. But is Palworld co-op multiplayer, and how does it work? Before you get ahead of yourself, there's a lot you need to know about the single-player and multiplayer aspects of Palworld. Palworld: How does the co-op multiplayer work? Luckily, there is a co-op multiplayer mode in Palworld, but let me explain further how this works. It's not just your typical 4-player game, except for the fact that it's certainly a feature. In a private server, up to four players can explore dungeons, catch and breed Pals, and even create factories. Screenshot: Pocketpair Of course, you're free to play on your own. But did you know that you can create a dedicated server that allows up to 32 players? That's a pretty huge number, and you may not ever reach it. But it's neat to see that up to 32 people can live in one Palworld server to...
