PCGamesN Monday, February 5, 2024 12:34 PM 2024 is set to be the year when the OLED gaming monitor really takes off, with dozens of new models having been announced compared to just a handful of options last year. This Samsung Odyssey G9 G95SC is one of last year's models, but it's still an astonishingly capable display. This 49-inch Samsung OLED panel drops straight onto our best gaming monitor list as the best super wide gaming monitor we've yet tested. It's not just a pretty 5,120 x 1,440-pixel face either, as this panel can trot along at 240Hz and delivers the sort of super-fast response time we've come to expect from an OLED display, making it very capable for competitive gaming, although there are a few caveats to consider. PCGamesN Monday, February 5, 2024 12:26 PM When is the Spine release date? If you're a fan of John Woo films that mix kung fu with pistols, then it's likely that Spine is on your wishlist. In the cyberpunk dystopian streets, the Tensor AI has taken over the city and is behind the authority's power via drones to suppress rebellions. Spine puts us in the role of Redline, who has a vendetta against the AI and its ruling elite and will stop at nothing to make them pay. Gun Fu fans will likely have to wait a long time to play Spine, which is a shame since it has an appealing cyberpunk game aesthetic. This story-based action-adventure game promises a tense "movie-like experience," that takes advantage of choreography and camera techniques. That said, this is the first non-mobile project from Cypriot developer Nekki, and it's far from the only game it has revealed in recent months. PCGamesN Monday, February 5, 2024 12:45 PM When is the Alone in the Dark release date? Survival horror has been going through a bit of a renaissance in recent years, so it's high time that we bring back the one that started it all. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, February 5, 2024 4:25 PM I don't expect anyone to buy this monitor - but I'm absolutely entranced by a $700 discount on a gaming monitor that brings it down to "just" $1800. To be fair, this is essentially two 32-inch 4K 240Hz monitors without the gap in the middle, with a Mini LED backlight that delivers 1000-nit HDR highlights, an absolute beast of a monitor... but I'm guessing that most people that can drop nearly $2000 on a monitor aren't waiting for a deals post on Rock Paper Shotgun to do so. Still, I can dream, and this monitor is pretty cool, so let's take a closer look at this absolute bargain. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, February 5, 2024 4:00 PM One of Intel's best value CPUs for gaming is even better value than usual this week, as the Core i5 12400F is down to just £125 at Amazon. That's more than £75 cheaper than the 13th and 14th-gen equivalents, which add on only meagre levels of performance, and a great price for a CPU that can use the same DDR4 or DDR5 motherboards with PCIe 5.0 support. If you're building an Intel-based gaming PC, I'd argue that this is the best budget option going! |

I swear I'll find a new/another niche one of these days, but listen, Pyrene is very cool indeed, and I lost a good hour to its free demo last week on Steam. On the surface, this might look like your typical fantasy dungeon crawler, but Pyrene has some neat tricks of its own, combining its own blend of resource gathering and roguelike citybuilding with Inscryption's number-crunching battles and a dash of Foretales' card-based exploration. And it has a lovely piano soundtrack to boot, too. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, February 5, 2024 12:24 PM If you'd told me back in 1999 that a rudimentary grasp of sound editing software would stand me in surprisingly good stead as a strategy game player, I'd have asked you who the hell you are and what you're doing in my house. But in the years that followed, after you'd been sent to the slammer for crashing through my window bellowing about cheap Audible subscriptions, I might have checked out games like Ghost Trick and Phantom Brigade - each sort of an exercise in placing actions on a timeline like audio layers to produce a winning composition - and thought "hey, that hysterical burglar was onto something". I wouldn't say there's an abundance of games in which you place actions on timelines, mind you. But those that do exist are neat, as Marge Simpson would say. Take Tarnished Blood. |

Atlus and Vanillaware shared another Unicorn Overlord trailer, this time detailing how to build relationships in the game and what sort of benefits they bring on the battlefield. This is one of several videos released ahead of the game's launch on March 8, 2024.
The rapport system will be familiar to anyone who has played the Fire Emblem games, consisting of a relationship meter that fills when characters fight together or receive gifts from Alain. Multiple characters can gain rapport at the same time by sharing a meal at a tavern, with bonus rapport earned if they like the dish. Upon reaching certain thresholds, characters will receive stat bonuses when fighting in the same unit, as well as unlock conversation scenes for you to view. The trailer rounds out by stating that the next video will focus on character growth and training.
You can watch the full Unicorn Overlord Relationships trailer via Youtube below:
As well as rapport, previous Unicorn Overlord trailers have given overviews of features like exploration, or classes and enemy types in the game. Atlus and Vanillaware have also previously mentioned the rapport system, highlighting the Rite of Covenant event that can be performed when the meter is high enough.
Unicorn Overlord is available to pre-order now, and it will release on March 8, 2024, for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch.

Square Enix shared a FFVII Rebirth interview with the Cloud voice actor Cody Christian. In some of the more notable segments, Christian brought up how challenging the recording process can be, especially as he played Cloud at different ages in this installment. He also noted, "The best thing about playing Cloud Strife… is being able to play Cloud Strife, man."
First, here's Christian's official statement on voicing Cloud at different ages throughout FFVII Rebirth and how that affected his performance.
As for the challenges of playing Cloud in FFVII Rebirth, Christian cited how recording means he isn't going through the script chronologically. So he needs to anticipate reactions and emotions accordingly. Here's his comment on that.
This is the second such interview released by Square Enix. It previously conducted a similar sort of one with Britt Baron, the voice actress behind Tifa in FFVII Remake and Rebirth.

Square Enix has released their Consolidated Financial Results for the nine-month period of April 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023 of the 2024 financial year. As seen in their previous 1st quarter and half year reports, Square Enix has continued to see an increase in sales but a decline in profits due to an increase in development and advertisement costs. [Thanks, gamebiz!]
The report states that Square Enix is continuing to make efforts to "strengthen the competitiveness and profitability" of the various arms of the company including Digital Entertainment, Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising. The company reported ¥257,612 million in net sales during the nine-month period ending December 31, 2023. This is an increase of 0.8% from the company's prior fiscal year during the same period of time. Square Enix also reported a 15.5% decrease in its operating income which totaled ¥34,918 million.
Square Enix's Digital Entertainment segment reported an increase in sales over the previous fiscal year during the same nine-month period due to the release of Final Fantasy XVI, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, and Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. The MMO segment saw a decrease in net sales compared to last year. Games for Smart Devices/PC Browser saw a decrease in net sales as new games like Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis and Dragon Quest Champions were unable to compensate for the decrease in performance for existing titles. Overall, the Digital Entertainment segment of Square Enix totaled ¥179,654 million in net sales, which is a 2.6% decrease from the prior fiscal year. The Digital Entertainment segment had an operating income of ¥30,715 million, which is a 20.7% decrease from the prior fiscal year.
The Amusement, Publication, and Merchandising segments of Square Enix all saw an increase in net sales and operating income during the nine-month period. Amusement totaled ¥44,858 million in net sales, which is an increase of 9.7% from last year, and ¥5,488 million in operating income, marking a 33.8% increase from last year. Publication saw a net sales increase of ¥22,745 million, which is a 7.9% increase from the last fiscal year, and ¥8,929 million in operating income which is a 6.8% from last year. Square Enix attributes this increase to the growth of print and digital sales of their comic books, and also due to the success of the anime adaption of The Apothecary Diaries. Merchandising saw a net sales increase of 4.4%, which totaled ¥12,429 million. The Merchandising segment also had an increase of 10.7% for its operating income totaling ¥3,210 million. This is in part due to a rise in sales of new merchandise from popular key franchises from Square Enix.
Square Enix has multiple mobile launches planned for the future, and also highlighted their upcoming releases including Foamstars, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, and the new expansion for Dragon Quest X.

Square Enix announced a new Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis wand weapon and piece of gear for Aerith. Rather than continuing the Valentine's Day initiative, this is a more fantasy-themed set.
The highlighted weapon this time is the Floral Wand. It's a five-star piece of equipment. It both deals damage and debuffs a single enemy with its C. Ability Floral Flare. That deals 420% non-elemental physical damage, while also reducing physical defense. If Aerith's health is above half, she'll also lower the enemy's resistance to wind-based attacks.
As for the new gear, that's the Floral Gown. Square Enix didn't detail what its specific abilities are. However, if people get these kinds of pieces of gear via the Stamp Card, they tend to boost stats and provide other bonuses.
The last new items added to Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis were for Tifa and Yuffie. The former's was a pair of Oven Mitts that could be earned from the event and are a weapon. The latter got a Diner Tray weapon and Sparkling Skater gear from a themed banner.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for the PC and mobile devices, and the Floral Wand and Gown for Aerith are available via the new banner until February 18, 2024.

The first DLC for Koei Tecmo and Omega Force's Fate/Samurai Remnant is set to launch on February 9, 2024, unleashing Gilgamesh and his Keian Command Championship on the masters of Edo. The DLC was originally announced back in late December 2023.
Gilgamesh is a staple in the Fate franchise and shows up as a supporting character in Fate/Samurai Remnant, though he first appeared all the way back in the original Fate/Stay Night. Details are light on the new DLC, but what we do know is that the King of Heroes is holding a tournament of his own and will be compelling the masters and servants of the Waxing Moon ritual to take part. A certain amount of story progress will be required to play the DLC, but how much exactly is unknown.
The DLC is the first of 3 included with the game's season pass, with the other two expected in July and September 2024. The season pass is also included with the game's deluxe edition, although Koei Tecmo stated that the DLC episodes will be available for purchase individually at a later date, minus the season pass bonuses.
Back in January 2024, Koei Tecmo released a Fate/Samurai Remnant demo version allowing players to try the introductory segment before buying. Around the same time, mobile game Fate/Grand Order made Samurai Remnant's playable Saber available to pull for in its servant gacha.
The Record's Fragment: Keian Command Championship DLC pack for Fate/Samurai Remnant featuring Gilgamesh, will launch on February 9, 2024. The game itself is readily available on the PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

Imagine you are reborn into a world as an adventurer and end up forming a party with a dumb goddess who drinks too much, an explosion-happy wizard who complains about being flat-chested, and a noble warrior who gets turned on by the idea of being eaten by monsters. What sort of hijinks would you think you'd end up stumbling into while adventuring with an eccentric party like that? Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire answers that question by giving Konosuba fans a wacky dress-up visual novel filled with sexy, salacious outfits to dress the Konosuba women in, producing some interesting storylines that range from humorous to straight up raunchy.
Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire is technically a loose sequel to the Japan-only game titled Konosuba: Judgment on this Greedy Game released in 2017, but works just fine as a standalone game that can be enjoyed by fans. While on the road, Kazuma, Megumin, Aqua, and Darkness—the main characters of Konosuba—happen to stumble across a strange black slab that has some sort of illegible text on it. The party discovers that the black slab can create clothing by using ingredients and materials. They also, unfortunately, discover it is cursed to awaken the opposite desire within a person, and the curse can only be lifted by fulfilling the physical and mental components of their new desire. The longer the curse remains on its unassuming target, the more permanent the change becomes until their original desire is replaced with the new one. To add fuel to the fire, the party also discovers that the slab was stolen from a nobleman who accuses them of its theft, leaving Kazuma, Megumin, Aqua, and Darkness to be forced to fulfill the nobleman's demands for strange outfits as they try to prove their innocence and save each party members from the curse of the black slab.
People who have engaged with the anime, manga, or light novels within the Konosuba series will be familiar with the cast present in the game and their personality types. The first person to be affected by the curse is Darkness who goes from being a masochist seeking humiliation from others around her to a sadist who thrives on the humiliation of others. The second person affected is Megumin, who goes from being envious of women with large boobs to embracing her existence as a flat-chested lolita. Aqua finds herself the third victim of the black slab's curse, making her go from being selfish and hedonistic to selfless like a proper goddess, although she still loves her bubbly.
In order to cure the party from their curse and save them from death by order of the nobleman, they all must go out on quests to collect items in order to craft a variety of sexy and suggestive outfits. There are also bonus outfits that can be made which unlocks additional storylines and increases the relationships between Kazuma and the three woman in his party as well and familiar supporting characters from the Konosuba series including Sena, Chris, Wiz, and Yunyun.
The game combines visual novel storytelling and task management in order to create clothing so players can progress through the wacky story of Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire. Players are given a certain amount of days to go on quests or complete part-time jobs in order to fulfill the nobleman's outfit request. Every five days operates a bit like this: three days are blocked off for players to select tasks in order to collect materials. Sometimes certain tasks will trigger story scenes that range from being extremely humorous to just plain uncomfortable depending on your tolerance for sexual innuendos and content.
After the schedule is run for this three days, players will get the chance to watch a scene in different locations that gives them the chance to increase Kazuma's relationship with one of the seven women. The fifth day is when players can shop for additional materials to use in outfit crafting and actually craft the outfits. The cycle continues until the player creates the main story outfits or runs out of days to create the outfits.
It requires some good time management to make sure the necessary materials are being collected from part-time jobs and quests, not to mention the fact there are so many additional outfits that can be crafted that aren't a part of the main storyline but can influence which ending the player gets for Kazuma. Thankfully, Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire is pretty fast so players can play through many different endings without feeling pressured to complete them on their first playthrough. Somehow I managed to make outfits for mainly Yunyun, which gave me her ending when I completed my first playthrough, although I had been mainly aiming for an ending with Aqua.
I found the time management aspect of this game to be rather creative and a nice way to make the game more interactive since players will need to actively manage their items and prioritize certain outfits before running out of time in each chapter to complete the main story outfits. Also, the game actively rewards mediocrity by showing unique events if you have Megumin, Aqua, and Darkness complete part-time jobs they dislike.
While not being the exact demographic for this game as I've never watched more than a handful of episodes of Konosuba, I did find some moments where I laughed at the ridiculous situations Kazuma, Megumin, Aqua, and Darkness would end up in—many of which were almost always a consequence of their own foolish actions. Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire is also extremely suggestive and is unashamed about it, which is in line with series as a whole, although I found the anime to be a bit more ironic about its sexual innuendos and raunchiness. The game still features the self-awareness present in the series, but some of the scenes that occur after a bonus outfit is given to one of the seven women feels like it is played pretty straight. For example, dressing Yunyun in a school girl uniform during a rainy day allows Kazuma to see through her clothes, and there is honestly nothing funny about it nor does it provide any meta commentary that I would expect from Konosuba. Of course, this game is filled to the brim with titilating outfits and moments, but even as somebody who has little experience with the anime, I expected these sorts of moments to at least have some kind of humorous payoff while still being provocative in the way Konosuba is known to be.
For people who love the raunchiness of the Konosuba series, there is plenty of that to find in Konosuba: Love for These Clothes of Desire, but if players were looking for something that attempts to subvert the genre when Megumin, Aqua, or Darkness are dressed in a swimsuit or maid outfit, then they probably won't find that here. This game is fanservice through and through, but it does have plenty of funny moments that will make fans want to see the game through to the end, especially if they can unlock an ending featuring their favorite character.
Konosuba: God's Blessing on This Wonderful World! Love for These Clothes of Desire will release for the PC via Steam, PS4 and Nintendo Switch on February 8, 2024.
