Welcome to the Week in Review
Week in review
It was another week where Apple managed to dominate the tech headlines by still forcefully refuting the US Government's claim that its iPhone business is a monopoly, and preparing to reveal some secrets just to defend itself, while also trying to whip up some excitement about its really big show in June (that's WWDC 2024 to the uninitiated). We'll come for the platforms but stay for the AI (please, please let there be generative AI) and maybe wonder a bit about what the ongoing case means for the future of the iPhone. Even without an AI brain transplant, everyone expects iOS 18 to bring some huge changes to your standard iPhone.

If there's one theme that's now consistent across all tech categories it's AI. Google's Gemini AI is set to appear in multiple Google phones and other Android-supporting devices like tablets. It will be inescapable.

I know AI is exceedingly good at creating photos and videos but I still prefer capturing the real thing with a real camera, the more analog-style the better. Now, I don't intend to switch back to roll film, but I do like a nice large lens (I see Nikon has a lovely one), and if I can put a really good camera on a drone, all the better (there's nothing like seeing a coastline from above). A recent DJI Avata 2 drone leak has me itching for the update to one of my favorite point-of-view fliers.

Finally, have you been watching the 3 Body Problem? It's a pretty wild show that, as you can read below, is not exactly winning with critics or audiences, but is worth the watch for all the not-of-this-world tech. I'll binge the second season when it arrives.

Enough of my musings, let's look at the biggest tech stories of the week.
