Former Blizzard president Mike Ybarra made waves recently when he suggested that gamers might want to start tipping their favorite games extra. "I've often thought 'I wish I could give these folks another $10 or $20 because it was worth more than my initial $70 and they didn't try to nickel and dime me every second,'"

Factorio and trains are finally together in city builder coming soon

There's a certain sort of person whose eyes will brighten from flat dullness at just a whisper of the words 'Transport Tycoon' and another whose heart will race should they hear 'Factorio' mentioned nearby. Sweet Transit, a city builder focusing on complex automated railway networks, combines elements of both games into one potentially near-intoxicating mix. After nearly two years in Steam Early Access, the full release train is about to pull into the station fully loaded with version 1.0.

Gigabyte launches fastest ever Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super

Gigabyte has just unveiled a new 'Prestige' series that "merges top-tier performance with unparalleled design" to create what will no doubt end up being some of the most expensive components in their class. Along with a striking white and gold look - that includes real gold-plated parts - the new graphics card of the range will also include the highest GPU clock speed of any Nvidia RTX 4080 Super.

While the new Z790 Aorus Xtreme X Ice motherboard and Aorus GeForce RTX 4080 Super Xtreme Ice 16G GPU aren't all that likely to earn a spot on our best motherboard and best graphics card guides, due to their expected high price, we can certainly take a moment to admire these new Gigabyte designs.

Gamer buys 4,000 copies of Alan Wake, none of them work

XCOM. Civilization. Half-Life. There are certain games we adore here at PCGamesN, certifiable PC classics that we consider part of our personal canon. Certainly, when it comes to collector's editions, reissues, or the occasional game of the year overhaul, we'd be tempted to buy a second copy of some of these beloved stalwarts. And maybe, just maybe, we'd go a little further - if it's a game we really, wildly adore, we might buy it twice, just in case one copy breaks, or so we can play it on PC and also another, second platform. But even with Baldur's Gate 3, Doom, and Command and Conquer, it's hard to think of a game that we love so much we'd buy it 4,000 times. Alan Wake 2 was fantastic. Control, Max Payne, and even the overlooked Quantum Break more than prove that Remedy is one of the best mainstream game-makers today. But is that enough to justify owning 4,000 copies of the studio's original, 2010 horror shooter? For one Alan Wake fan, the answer is a resounding 'yes.'

Spiritual successor to Left 4 Dead gets massive new update and demo

Remember Left 4 Dead? So does everyone else, quite fondly, and yet nothing's really managed to bring it back to the forefront, even spiritually. Back 4 Blood was a sorely mismanaged attempt, and all we've had otherwise has been Call of Duty's Zombies modes. Thankfully, this could change with Hellbreach: Vegas, a solo-developed zombie -  sorry, demon - survival shooter that's just received a huge update and a free demo, all while standing at an impressive 83% positive reviews despite being in Early Access. Referred to as 'the end of Phase 1' by its developer, Infinity Ape Studios, this update brings in several additions to refine the demon-slaying experience.

Being one of the most popular FPS games of the last decade, Destiny 2 has enjoyed a consistent and respectable average player count of roughly 30,000-50,000 in the past year; very impressive considering the game turns four this year. Since its announcement in the summer of last year, EA's Black Panther game, developed by their recently formed internal studio Cliffhanger Games, has remained very sparse on details. All that was known for months after its announcement was just its developer and working title, not even a final name. However, the appearance of a new job listing under EA has changed that, granting some new information on how the game could actually turn out. While there were already some understandable assumptions made based on tropes commonly found in modern superhero games, this information is thankfully concrete.

New, realistic tactical FPS has a huge playtest available right now

Super realistic, swiftly punishing shooters like Arma and Escape From Tarkov always hold the promise of tense, cerebral gameplay. You can't just run and gun. There's no use playing solo. You've got to strategize, think, pick your shoots, and move with intent. The problem, though, is the learning curve. If you've arrived to these games a little later than the rest of the established player base, getting started can be extremely dispiriting, as you're quickly killed off round after round before you've had the chance to get your bearings. Inspired by EFT and The Division, a new FPS game aims to provide a little more balance and approachability, closer in ethos to Valve's tentpole Counter-Strike 2. Realistic but playable, you can try it for yourself right this second thanks to a huge playtest.

The best god games on PC 2024

What are the best god games on PC? Whether you're a benevolent deity, carefully managing a virtual world so that everyone can live in comfort and harmony, or an agent of chaos who has gone mad with power ever since deleting the pool ladder in The Sims 2, god games are a great way to flex your management games muscles on a cosmic scale.

The traditional god game typically involves supervising some hapless humans, who you can't directly control but will benefit from your benevolent oversight. On the surface, this might sound like a city-building game, but your morality is tested when you decide to prioritize people over profits. You might even be able to level up your godly powers as your people worship you - let's face it, gods are total narcissists. You'll want to pray for some cash, as you won't find these games on our best free PC games list. And then we got an email about a game called Ants Took My Eyeball and I was like "Man, games need good names more often." I played the Steam demo for Ants Took My Eyeball (which is a 2D action roguelite where you go into an anthill to fight ants, who took your eyeball) and I very much liked the design, weapons and idea, but not the controls so much. Ironmouse has been outspoken about her condition and using her platform as a Vtuber to help support, educate, and raise money for charity. Back in March 2024, Immune Deficiency Foundation announced she would be a keynote speaker for the 2024 Primary Immunodeficiency Conference. She announced she would be on the "Meet the Stars of 'Compromised'" panel. That announcement came right after her second 3D concert.

Dragon Quest Healslime cloth and headphone holders

Taito revealed new merchandise modeled after the Healslime from the Dragon Quest series. The collection will consist of a cloth hanger and a headphone stand. These items will be available as crane game prizes in select arcade centers across Japan. People will also be able to find them in several online crane games, such as Taito Online Crane, Sega UFO Catcher Online, and Capcom Net Catcher.

The Healslime, which is alternatively known in Japan as Hoimi Slime, is a derivative of the Dragon Quest series' popular monster Slime. The new merchandise will make use of the yellow tentacles that distinguish the Healslime from all the other Slimes in the franchise.

The headphone stand will have an overall width of around 25 cm (~9.84 inches), and the owner will be able to store a headphone between its head and tentacles.

Meanwhile, the cloth hanger will be sized at around 28 cm (~11.02 inches). Taito will also add a hook on its head and a clothespin to each of its tentacles to make item actually functional.

Here is how both of them look:

The Dragon Quest Healslime headphone stand will appear first in late April 2024 via crane games in arcade centers across Japan. The cloth hanger featuring the same creature will be available later in mid-May 2024, due to certain circumstances.

This benchmark features the updated graphics that Square Enix will include in Patch 7.0 at the same time it releases the FFXIV: Dawntrail expansion in July 2024. Review: Harold Halibut Is a Modern Fable About Connection

There are so many things I could say about Harold Halibut that I find it difficult to even start. I could say how the game uses a truly unique art style, which involves a blend of real handcrafted puppets scanned and rendered in 3D along with animation that imitates stop-motion. It's something that has never been done to this scale in the medium. I could also say how Harold Halibut is a story about love and making connections, finding where you belong in the world, and making your own "home."

It is the Cold War, and the Earth is on the brink of destruction. Humanity has sent the ark ship Fedora 1 out into the stars, with the hope of finding another habitable planet and for humankind to continue living. Over 250 years later, the Fedora reaches its destination only to find out that the planet is all made of water, with no inhabitable land and an atmosphere composed of noxious gasses. To make matters worse, the ship crashes on the planet, with no feasible way of relaunching into space. In the present day, all administrative and political matters in the Fedora are handled by the All Water corporation, a bunch of nasty capitalist opportunists with only their own interests in mind. After years of resignation, the inhabitants of the Fedora discover that there might be a chance to return to Earth. However, there is a limited window to relaunch and the trip back would take about 80 years, meaning that most of the current population of the Fedora would never make it home.

With these events as the backdrop to the plot, you play as the titular Harold Halibut, a lab assistant to scientist professor Jeanne Mareaux. It is his work as aid to the professor and Jack of all trades aboard the ship, as well as his kind demeanor, that puts him in the unique position of giving the Fedorans a chance to return home. Harold can come off as meek and docile, but he's a gentle and patient human being. He's a rather quiet and introspective individual that can show lots of passion and energy under the right circumstances. You can see a lot of his personality in his notebook sketches, and when he plays the part of "Agent Haroldson." Harold also struggles with making himself be heard and connecting with his peers, at times being easily dismissed by others in a harsh manner. Throughout the course of the game Harold sees himself in situations where he finally has the chance to demonstrate to himself who he wants to be in life. Harold is a truly delightful person.

This is not reserved to the titular character. Every character that inhabits the world of the game feels like a fully-fledged individual, with their own lived history and connections. The voice acting helps make them feel even more real. Due to the harsh circumstances, the Fedora 1 is a tight knit community, and the writing does a great job at showing the player how these people are connected to each other. Most characters in the main and supporting cast are also faced with various challenging circumstances in life. As Harold, you get to participate in those small moments and make new connections with the people in the ship. As well as learn new concepts and perspectives from other individuals outside of the Fedora. However, I will not linger on them for too long, as I think this part of the game is best experienced knowing as little as possible.

When it comes to gameplay, Harold Halibut is an adventure game focused on interacting with the many inhabitants of the Fedora. Most of the time, players will be trotting around the ship to complete the tasks Harold has received, and talking to various people to progress. As for Harold himself, he is not a vehicle for the player. Instead, the player is a vehicle for Harold. Sometimes you get the chance to select dialogue options. However, Harold has a set personality and is his own person at all times. Do not expect an experience like that of Telltale Games, nor a point and click either. There are some puzzle-like moments, but these only serve to add some interaction and break up the pace. The game progresses in a linear fashion, and there are some secondary tasks that are not required to progress the plot. These flesh out existing characters, and I highly recommend completing them. These secondary objectives are usually along the way of main objectives, so they always feel complimentary to the pacing and whatever is happening in the plot.

I personally enjoyed that Harold Halibut offers an easy to pick-up and light experience. I could imagine some people wanting a larger number of more complex puzzles, or a more hands-on approach to character interactions, decision making, and impacting the story. However, I don't think that every video game needs to offer a complex mechanical experience to convey its message and be worthwhile. The layout of the Fedora is interesting enough that jogging around the ship to talk to people and finish your tasks is entertaining enough as is, and with a game as stunningly detailed it makes sense that the gameplay loop is to simple *live* and soak in the environments.

To create the visuals of the game, developer Slow Bros painstakingly hand made every single character as a puppet, plenty of environment as real, physical dioramas, and scanned them to render as a video game. It is evident in the way that the numerous cloth, wood, and metal textures have a certain crisp look to them. The animation style is also deliberately made to look like stop-motion. Just on the basis of its art style and visuals, this game is wonderful and worth playing. The unique visuals remind me a bit of games like Mundaun and Saturnalia (which mix handmade paper sketch textures scanned and rendered in 3D.) However, no studio before has decided to do what Slow Bros did to this scale. Just for reference, the game took over 10 years to finish.

The use of music in Harold Halibut is very subtle. Instrumental songs appear for important cutscenes, and are used very deliberately. However, environmental sound effects are what's most prominent in the game, and they're used in interesting ways. The buzzing sound of lights, automatic doors opening and closing, water bubbles, along with the sound of steps are what you'll be hearing most. You can also hear string instruments playing elongated notes in the background, creating the sensation of being surrounded on all sides. Like being underwater.

Harold Halibut looks beautiful on the outside, and it is even more beautiful once you dive into it. The visuals are an undeniable technical achievement. Its gameplay is undemanding, making the game accessible for many people, even those who are not familiar with the medium of video games. The story and narrative are easy to follow, and depict a modern fable about finding your own home, connecting with others, sharing your perspective, and finding what you want from life.

Harold Halibut will come out on April 16, 2024 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam, as well as Xbox Game Pass.
