When I started playing Fallout 76 in 2018 there were no backpacks. So I never thought about it. But when I learned from a random comment that backpacks had been added after that point and had been in the game for years, I felt stupid for never crafting one. And then I went to collect the recipe for a pack and felt…

Grim co-op action-RPG sees player count boost thanks to big update

I never trusted the Pied Piper. Alright, he's a morality tale about paying people for their services but he undercuts his point by stealing a town's kids. Frankly I'd rather have the rats than deal with his ilk. In Ravenwatch, a gritty co-op rogelike action RPG, he and some other fairy tales have had the grim reimagining they deserve, meaning the Pied Piper finally looks how I always imagined he did; nasty.

Long awaited World War II RTS revival finally announces launch date

Men of War 2 has been in the works for several years now. Replacing the hectic FPS gunfights of games like Call of Duty 2, Hell Let Loose, or Battlefield V with the further removed viewpoint of Company of Heroes 3 or even Commandos 2, the long awaited sequel is a new take on a series whose history dates back to the mid 2000s. Now, after war forced its Ukrainian creator Best Way to relocate its studio and delay their work, Men of War 2 finally has a launch date, which is, thankfully, quite soon.

New hotel management game inspired by classics makes it

A great management game makes you feel like you're a master of your craft, sliding all the pieces into place and watching your clockwork creation tick. The best management games, however, make it just as fun when - intentionally or otherwise - a spring flies loose and the whole thing falls to pieces. Shown off during Wired Direct '24, Hotel Architect, from indie developer Pathos Interactive, is a delightfully light hearted management sim inspired by games like Two Point Hospital, The Sims and RollerCoaster Tycoon. Ahead of the showcase, PCGamesN spoke to Accel Sjöstrom from Pathos about its new game, the challenges of development, and making it fun to fail.

I've only given two 10/10 reviews in my career: Diablo 4 and Martha is Dead. The former, well, you've probably heard of that one, but the latter is an indie horror game set in World War II.      The most unique city builder of 2024 is a cure for triple-A boredom

Gaming culture, and many of the popular genres that dominate Steam, have become familiar and codified. You hear the term 'strategy game,' 'RPG,' or 'FPS' and you know immediately what to expect. City builders, likewise, come with expectations. Cities Skylines 2 is a distillation of the form - Frostpunk 2 seeks to challenge assumptions with a denser narrative and darker tone, but remains mechanically true to traditions. Speaking exclusively to PCGamesN, the creator of 2024's most unique city building game thinks more can be done to shake up the triple-A.

Controversial new mob comes to Minecraft, and it's available right now

Last autumn, the Minecraft community was incensed about the results of a mob vote conducted in advance of its 1.21 Update. Players were given an opportunity to vote on three options for the introduction of a new mob: a crab, a penguin, or an armadillo. The results were close, with the armadillo winning, and, once announced, caused some fans to raise concerns that bot voting interfered with the poll — concerns that creator Mojang addressed by assuring Minecraft players that it was "confident that this year's winner accurately reflects the results of the vote" in an official statement. Now, months later, the controversial mob has come to the game, and we have the details.

League of Legends Mythic shop April – what's on sale?

What's on sale in the League of Legends Mythic shop? New skins for LoL are released all the time, with a new event arriving on the Rift every few weeks, but what happens if you missed the boat with that awesome KD/A Evelynn skin, or if you've seen a Hextech skin in a game of Summoner's and want to bag it for yourself?

The Mythic shop is a special storefront in the free PC game that stocks rare skins, wards, chromas, and essence. These cosmetic items aren't available for real-world money, either, as they can only be purchased with Mythic Essence, so no more worrying about how much you've spent in League of Legends. The stock held in this store is rotated regularly, with some skins becoming unavailable for months, so it's best to keep up to date on what's on sale in the League of Legends Mythic store.

AOC just made 540Hz gaming monitors a sensible price

AOC has just unveiled the Agon Pro AG246FK, a new 1080p gaming monitor with a ridiculous 540Hz refresh rate. However, while we can debate the need for such a fast display all we like, we can't deny that this new AOC model is far more affordable than its 540Hz gaming monitor competitors.

The chief competition for this new AOC display are the Asus ROG Swift PG248QP and BenQ Zowie XL2586X, both of which cost over $900. The new AOC display, though, is set to cost just €699, which equates to around $750. Developer Daniel Burke furnished me with a little playable slice, and boy, Innkeep is a grim old time. I mean that as a compliment.

In it you run a big pub with room for a lot of grizzled adventurers, in a dog-eat-dog dark fantasy RPG sort of a world - think a roadside pub in one of the early seasons of Game Of Thrones, before everyone hated it. You do a lot of plate-spinning drudgery like cooking, cleaning, and serving, but also eavesdropping, rumourmongering, and knowing when to slip in a ribald joke as a distraction while you size up a mercenary's sword.

Afternoon, conveyor belt fans! Good news, I think I may have discovered the first genuinely cosy automation game. Attempts have been made at cosy automation and automated cosiness in the past – Satisfactory is on the sunnier side, providing you enable the right settings, and Shapez 2 has lots of rounded edges. But IDK, there's something about the ravages of mass industry that doesn't quite gel with zoomorphic raccoon baristas and other such wholesome trappings. Have you ever encountered a cuddly smokestack? How about a cuddly just-in-time network?

Combine cosiness with automation, and a lot of the time, you end up with some kind of macabre joke, like Palworld. Or at least so I thought before I discovered Sweet Transit, out now, which seemingly resolves everything by means of a hearty injection of trains.

Sometimes, I hear critics describe something as 'actively hostile' to the act of playing it, but with something close to admiration in their voices. I've always felt that I, too, would like to one day find an artwork that I could describe in the same way. Partly because it sounds like an interesting experience, but mainly so I could steal that line and feel like one of those elite, urbanely perceptive, multiple trouser-owning critics.

Well, today is not that day, because indie horror IRIS isn't, in fact, actively hostile towards the act of playing it. It's more a case of passive disdain. Is it a 'good' game? Probably not. Ah, but is it enjoyable? Buddy, not even slightly. But it is intriguing. I am intrigued, reader.

Build-a-Bear Brought Back the Pokemon Dragonite Plush

Build-a-Bear announced it is pulling one of its Pokemon plush out of retirement, as Dragonite is back. People can get a bundle with it online, and it is not available on the US storefront for $65 and the UK one for £50.

As a reminder, it's been quite a few years since Dragonite debuted. The character first flew into Build-a-Bear stores back in December 2020. It's known for being one of the more awkwardly-sized members of the Pokemon collection. This is due to its tail and wings. That means it can't wear the same outfits as other plush from the store. The price has gone up on it since its original launch, though. When it first debuted, it was $59/£45.

The Build-a-Bear rerun of the Dragonite Pokemon plush contains all the same accessories as before. You get the 15 inch plush with a five-in-one sound chip inserted into it, the blue Dragonite Hat and Scarf set, and the purple and white Dragonite Cape.

As a refresher, here's how it looks:

The last new Pokemon plush to debut at the store was Bidoof. It joined the line of toys in March 2024. It followed Charizard

The Dragonite Pokemon plush is back again at the online Build-a-Bear storefront.

There are few comfortable video games that make me feel like I'm wrapping myself up in a warm blanket or returning home to see a loved one I haven't visited in a long time. But Hades 2 is exactly that. So far, it feels like it includes the right mix of elements the original Supergiant Games award-winning title, all while forging its own path.

Hades 2 is a direct sequel to the original hack-and-slash roguelike, and it picks up right from where it left off. I checked out the 2024 technical test on PC ahead of its release in early access, and it held nothing back. The game started with the new protagonist Melinoë seemingly picking up with a new run of the underworld.

I immediately had a quick moment to get my bearings with her skills and jumped right into the fray. The sense of progression in this sequel pretty much feels like a duplicate of the first game, which I don't mind. But instead of the often grim and red tones of the first game, this title has green everywhere. It's a neat touch.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Among the initial abilities I had access to in the Hades 2 preview included the standard thrust tied to several spears. This is the basic attack Melinoë gets with her default weapon, and it is surprisingly my favorite of the three I had access to. It offers just the right bit of range, which reminded me of my one of favorite Zagreus weapons: the bow.

Speaking of bows, one of the two other powers I had was one. I could hold it down to aim in a line ahead of me or charge it up for a more magical variant of its attack. The final ability involved a fascinating magical circle. It slows down opponents, which saw a lot of use in battle. I often set it up to gather up enemies, and then take them out at once. The circle even helped in escaping a near-tragic situation.

Overall, the new base abilities in this game feel pretty good so far. As always, upgrades exist throughout a run to make these skills better. For instance, I picked one upgrade that added scorch to my bow attack. This burned up enemies and dealt further damage to them.

Each run feels quite different in this game too, as the dungeon generates random boons. I had to pick carefully to decide if I wanted to prioritize bolstering my health or visiting Charon for supplies, for example. These neat little on-the-fly decisions make or break runs. The whole randomness and uncertainty of the situation already make this game so much fun.

Screenshot by Siliconera

On my first run, I made it all the way to the final boss of the technical test. I lost in unsurprising fashion, but it challenged me in a way most of the other enemies didn't. The first boss, without any spoilers, is a literal test for both Melinoë and the player. It feels like a sharp uptick in difficulty over the otherwise pretty easy enemies before it.

Playing Hades 2 immediately felt like I was tapping into muscle memory. This made powering through the initial enemies quite easy, but the boss battle showed this sequel's true potential. It forced me to use every ability at my disposal to slow down the foe, launch arrows from afar, dodge, and slice my way to victory.

But for many players like myself, the gameplay will feel unchanged. As such, the true excitement comes from the new story and characters. Some characters return to offer boons, such as the stunning Aphrodite, but there are plenty of new Greek gods and goddesses as well. Without spoiling, I am so much more invested in this tale than the original.

Hades 2 Preview 1
Screenshot by Siliconera

It deals with a new threat in Chronos and a surprising premise I didn't expect. Because of this, I am even more hyped for the early access release. Fortunately, it plays as smooth as butter even now on Steam Deck.

Hades 2 is currently in its technical test phase. It will release for early access on PC via Steam in 2024.

More Hades II Technical Test Invites Being Sent Out

If you didn't make it into the Hades II Technical Test on Steam that earlier in April 2024, you may want to double check and see if you can play on PC. Supergiant Games announced it started allowing more people into this beta.

To be specific, two rounds of invites were confirmed. On April 22, 2024, Supergiant Games announced that it allowed more people to start playing the game. It then also noted that was only the second of another expected round. The next wave of Hades II Steam Technical Test invitations will go out to PC players by April 27, 2024. Metaphor: ReFantazio Bonds Won't Lead to Romance

In a new livestream answering various questions about the game, Atlus confirmed that players won't be able to romance characters in Metaphor: ReFantazio. The Bonds system will allow for deep personal relationships, but unlike the Persona series it won't feature dating sim elements.

This information was confirmed during the final Q&A section of a new special livestream broadcasted after the premiere of the global showcase where the game's release date was announced. The specific question appeared at the 1:36:45 mark during the recent livestream, and it was answered at the 1:38:02 mark. As a reminder, the livestream is only available in Japanese.

When asked if players would be able to romance characters through the new Bond system, host Mafia Kajita answered that Metaphor: ReFantazio will not allow players to enter romantic relationships, as this is a different style of system from the Social Link and Confidant systems. However, Kajita said that players will be able to form deep bonds and explore deeper narratives through sub-stories.

The Bond system will allow players to unlock new Archetypes after establishing bonds with new characters and deepening them. Archetypes work as the unique class system for Metaphor: ReFantazio.

Metaphor: ReFantazio will come out worldwide on October 11, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders for the game are now open.

Sega has been adding a vast amount of crossover content to PSO2: New Genesis on an almost monthly basis. It started 2024 by adding content from The Seven Deadly Sins in January and Nijisanji in February.

While there was a break in March 2024, the company continued the wave with Rurouni Kenshin in April and the Atelier game series in May. Sega still has one unrevealed crossover from an anime show based on a light novel, which is slated to come in July 2024.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available on PC and PlayStation 4. New VShojo Vtuber Michi Mochievee Releases First Cover Song

The new VShojo Vtuber Michi Mochievee debuted in April 2024, and she already released her first cover song on YouTube. It is "Aishite, Aishite, Aishite," the Kikuo-P Vocaloid track.

Here is Michi's take on the track:

A number of Vtubers have released covers of "Aishite, Aishite, Aishite." For example, Hololive Advent member Nerissa Ravencroft did an English translation of it as her very first cover too.

Alongside the release of the first Michi Mochievee cover song, the VShojo Vtuber held a "just chatting" stream on YouTube. During it, she talked about the cover, preparing for it, and readying her channel.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYYXM42t_8I&ab_channel=MichiMochievee

This was Michi's very first YouTube stream. During her debut, she noted she'd like to get a Play Button.

As for the rest of the week, Michi released a schedule and noted she'll be doing things like playing Shinkansen 0, That's Not My Neighbor, Kuukiyomi 2 and 3, and Outlast 2. No merchandise

The other major VShojo news this week has to do with the Ironmouse Immune Deficiency Foundation charity DND campaign. Many members of the company took part on April 22, 2024. As of time of writing, the Tiltify page noted they raised over $70,230 for charity. The fundraising goal for the stream was $100,000, and it is still possible to donate.

genshin impact arlecchino trailer

Ahead of her playable debut, HoYoVerse has uploaded a character demo for Arlecchino, who'll be a new character in Genshin Impact. The video combines her attack animations with her story, which we could see from previous trailers and the game itself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etJuE22vDr0

In the trailer, we can see how Arlecchino uses her spear and fire in battle. These are likely the same animations that'll be in the playable version as well. The trailer also references the House of Hearth, which is the orphanage that Arlecchino both hails from and is in charge of. You can watch the Arlecchino character demo for Genshin Impact here:

As a reminder, Arlecchino's kit is very similar to that of Hu Tao's. Not only are they both Pyro Polearm users, but they also focus on boosting their Normal Attack. Arlecchino in particular focuses on the Bond of Life effect, which prevents HP recovery from healing effects until they're healed for the amount equal to the Bond of Life. She can increase how much damage she deals with her Normal Attack based on her Bond of LIfe percentage.

Genshin Impact is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Arlecchino will debut in Genshin Impact Version 4.6, which will go live on April 23, 2024.
