The 20 best simulation games to play in 2024

What are the best simulation games on PC? From the all-time greats that are still worth playing; the sims with modding communities who breathe eternal life into them; the facsimiles of an aspect of reality so niche you can barely fathom their existence, we have everything you need here.

Sims differ from other PC games in that their raison d'être isn't necessarily to entertain, at least not primarily. Do you want fun and excitement? Tough. Operating a submarine is not that. It is, however, fascinating, terrifying, and hugely satisfying as a long-form experience. Such is the nature of the genre that seeks out the best simulator games - it's like asking for the 'special' stock the shopkeeper keeps in the back room.

The best crime games on PC 2024

What are the best crime games on PC? Videogames are and have always been, all about fulfilling a fantasy. We step into virtual worlds to fight evil, slay monsters, grab sweet loot, or go to war online. They're a chance to do something we wouldn't usually do - and that includes crime games. With that in mind, games that focus on crime are popular for that very reason - they're (hopefully) not something you'd attempt in real life.

Ever since RPG game Grand Theft Auto challenged players to earn as many Wanted stars as possible, gamers have been pushing the limits of reckless behavior and general naughtiness. We reckon at least one of these is sure to make you an offer you can't refuse, as they aren't only naughty power fantasies, but some of the best PC games ever. Between modern-day crime epics, online heists, fisticuffs in faraway places, and a trip back in time to criminal empires of yesteryear, we've got a little something for everyone.

AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE review – a mighty mid-range maverick

Competition is wonderful and the new AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE is proof of that. The advent of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Super has undoubtedly served as a catalyst for AMD to rethink the GRE's regional exclusivity (it was previously only available in China), resulting in the wider launch of a seriously compelling graphics card.

There is no shortage of contenders for the title of best graphics card from both AMD and Nvidia right now, with the GRE making for another addition to the already crowded midrange market. I've spent the past few weeks putting this pixel pusher through its paces, and it's been a pleasantly surprising experience, in spite of some expected, albeit mild, weaknesses.

Divinity Original Sin and classic Final Fantasy inspire new pixel RPG

Maybe it's just romanticism and nostalgia, but I think games looked better in the late '80s and early '90s. They weren't as polished, convincing, or photorealistic, but that crisp, pixelated style was instantly recognizable - if we want to differentiate games from movies, TV, and anything else, there was a time, some forty years ago, where they had their own, inimitable aesthetic. Mixing Divinity Original Sin, from esteemed Baldur's Gate 3 maker Larian, and the formative years of Final Fantasy, a new strategy RPG looks like it was pulled directly from the golden age, and you can try it for yourself right now.

The story of Manor Lords' soundtrack begins, as all inspiring tales do, with hunched-over late-night doom scrolling. It was pre-covid, and Pressure Cooker Studios' composer Daniel Caleb was flicking through reddit posts when a trailer cut through the glare. He'd never heard of Manor Lords before. It looked like a new IP, but already had a huge Reddit following. Caleb loved what he saw. At that point, Pressure Cooker mainly worked on film scores, but both Caleb and fellow composer Elben Schutte had always wanted to eventually move on to bringing their storytelling from cinema to games. Like with getting fancy polyhedral dice sets full of all glitter and wool, buying and owning are two different hobbies when it comes to books. I think this has gotten worse (if that's the word?) with the increasingly popularity of BookTok, the book-centric community on TikTok. It's really mobilised young people towards reading (which is good) but in some cases drives a consumption for consumption's sake approach, where one must have read new books to talk about, one must take no breaths between reading, and one must read an astonishing number of books in the smallest amount of time possible (which I think is bad).

The former lead writer of charming super-fascist simulator Helldivers 2 is working on a strategy and tactics RPG in the vein of Nintendo and Intelligent System's Fire Emblem games, which aren't available on PC and as such, are a complete mystery to you, a lifelong desktop warrior who would sooner cut their hand off than suffer it to brush against one of those filthy Nintendo witches, I mean Switches.

To fill you in, Fire Emblem is known and sort of celebrated for being a rich ensemble fantasy story with character permadeath. Helldivers 2, meanwhile, is a game in which people are as expendable as bullets, and the storytelling is deliberately brittle because it consists largely of clownish propaganda. Put the two sets of inspirations together, and what do you get? You get a headline, that's what. Beyond that, we can only dream.

Back in the late 90s when all of you NORMIES were playing Diablo, I was playing a little-known Konami ARPG called Azure Dreams, which has alas never escaped PlayStation prison. It's a grid-based, upwardly mobile roguelitey dungeon crawler set in a big tower, each floor a semi-randomised maze of monsters (which you can capture), traps and pick-ups, where player and creature actions happen simultaneously.

Effort Star's Enter The Chronosphere doesn't have grids or monster capturing, that I know of, but it taps into a comparable vein of diorama-sized frantic-yet-laidback challenge, with characters, foes and projectiles frozen in time till you give a command. This is particularly notable because Super Street Fighter II Turbo is when Akuma became playable for the first time. He's wearing his standard grey karate gi and prayer beads, as well as a rope belt. The fiery kanji 天 appears on his back.

Here are the four screenshots showing the Street Fighter 6 Akuma Outfit 2 costume. Capcom noted it can be acquired both with Fighter Coins or by playing through World Tour once the character is live.

To compare, here's a screenshot from Capcom from Capcom Arcade Stadium: Super Street Fighter II Turbo showing the inspiration for this Akuma costume.

In addition to the character appearing in Street Fighter 6, there will be items for us inspired by him. The Akuma Arrives Fighting Pass launches that same day. It features avatar gear cosmetics inspired by him, music like "Akuma's Theme -USFII Remix-," and an emote.

Street Fighter 6 is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC, and the Akuma DLC release date is May 22, 2024.

The collection will consist of four figures. Kirby will appear in two versions: the regular appearance and a train station officer version with a hat and whistle. Waddle Dee and Waddle Doo will complete the lineup.

Here is how they all look:

Merchandise from the Kirby video game series has been popularly sought after in Japan. One of the most notable examples was the Happy Meal toy lineup in McDonald's Japan. Despite releasing in late February 2024 with an initial timeframe of three weeks, the restaurant chain sold out all stocks of the toys in just a week.

The Kirby Pupupu Train figures will be available via Gashapon machines across Japan.

Neptunia Game Maker Goddesses

The Neptunia franchise is an endlessly fascinating one. It's a series built on the concept of game consoles existing as goddesses in a land that echoes the real-world games industry. It sounds like a one-off joke, not something that's been trucking along happily for fourteen years at this point. And now we have reached the sixteenth game in the series, Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution, which combines the franchise's traditional JRPG elements with a management sim.

You play as older version of series protagonist, Neptune, who has found herself in an alternate dimension. Here, she teams up with three goddesses – Reedio, Jagaa and Pippeh – who've been banished to obscurity after their failures in the past. Together they form a new game studio that will allow the Failure Goddesses to reach the heights they deserve again.

This results in an adventure split between dungeon crawler RPG aspects and a management sim. In the dungeon crawler sections, Neptune and friends open new Sales Areas by fighting monsters. In the management sections, you hire developers and place them onto projects based on the genre and style. You also need to invest in the studio to improve development time and unlock new genres.

Screenshot by Siliconera

It's a slightly confusing concept to newcomers. Neptunia Game Make R:Evolution makes no effort to catch new players up on what the series is about. As a newcomer, I'm fortunate enough to have heard about the central concept ahead of time. If I hadn't, I'd be very confused. It's a world where all the current consoles (and Sega) are represented by goddesses, with everything around them representing the wider games industry. Even the Failure Goddesses are based on fifth-generation runners-up: the 3DO, Atari Jaguar and Apple Pippin.

Despite the lack of proper introduction, the writing is delightful. The entire story is absolute nonsense, but Neptunia Game Maker gleefully leans into it at every turn. It's used as a platform for jokes about the state of the modern games industry. It throws out winking references to everything from piracy to the work of FromSoftware. Every game designer you can hire at your studio is a reference, including a Ghostly Robber who asks you to contact him through his calling card and a designer named Rapapa whose past work was considered "flat".

Even the "failure" consoles are given a fair amount of representation. Reedio is based on a professor from Japanese ads for the 3DO, with a hair clip pulled directly from its logo. Jagaa yells "do the math" at every opportunity, a slogan from an extremely 90s ad for the Atari Jaguar. For consoles that most have forgotten about, it's surprising how well represented they are. I assume the Pippin is too, but that's too obscure even for me.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The voice acting is also surprisingly good too. I played with the English dub and every performance is punchy and enthusiastic. Particular highlights go to the pirate crew, who chew the scenery at every opportunity. The voice actor for Copy the Hard is having the time of his life especially. Even the dodgy accent of Copy the Art is endearing in a so-bad-it's-good way. It's also a huge part in why the main cast are so charming, as each performance perfectly balances the amount of sincere and absurd the game requires.

Where this falls apart a little is how these lines feature in gameplay. As you wander a dungeon, your party members will fill every bit of silence they can. By the end of the first dungeon, however, you'll have heard everything they will ever say. Pippeh repeats a variation of "are we there yet?" as often as possible. Jagaa tended to get stuck saying "make sure to look around" in an endless loop. Also, as someone who checks maps a lot, it didn't take long for each girl's single "let me check the map" line to wear out its welcome. There's nothing wrong with the lines in isolation. However, there's so few lines repeated so frequently they became obnoxious.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Sadly, this is not the only issue with the dungeon crawling in Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution. It is brutally repetitive for most of the game's run time. Dungeons are a series of rooms so nondescript I thought they were randomly generated (they are not, I checked). They're also cluttered with enemies, meaning you're tripping over an enemy almost as soon as you leave a fight with another. Sometimes there are puzzles to solve, but they add little more than making already tedious treks a little more tedious.

Combat isn't much better. On paper, it's similar to Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth, as you attack using combos, build up a meter for more powerful attacks or using items, and can switch between all your party members on the fly. There's even a cool chain attack feature, where increasingly more powerful burst attacks will trigger with character changes at the right time. However, in practice you're mostly pressing one button and occasionally a directional button whenever a prompt appears on screen. There was little strategy in the combat, with most battles playing out the same way. Even boss fights failed to shake things up too much, apart from upping enemy health. Dodging and guarding also felt wildly inconsistent. It honestly got to the point where it felt more effective to just button mash instead of trying to avoid getting hit.

Screenshot by Siliconera

The management aspects of Neptunia Game Maker are a little more compelling. You assign developers to game projects, with their stats determining how well that game will turn out. Initially, you're going to be releasing a string of 1-star duds. However, as you earn more points and attract better developers, you'll soon see the stars increase. You'll also accrue territory, taking market share away from other game makers. I didn't find it particularly deep, but it was interesting. It reminded me of a stripped-down version of the real estate minigame from Yakuza 0, which is not a bad thing.

My main critique of the management gameplay is that it feels disconnected from the rest of the game. It's something you don't always need to pay attention to. The only real connection with the rest of the game is management progress arbitrarily locked behind story progress. It's a shame because I could see so many ways the two sides could complement each other and elevate them into something more.

Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution is a mixed bag. If you want a charming story with plenty of nerdy goofs about consoles from the 90s, you'll find something to enjoy here. If you want interesting and in-depth mechanics, then you'd be better off looking elsewhere. One for the established fanbase that's unlikely to win over many newcomers.

Neptunia Game Maker R:Evolution releases for the PS5, PS4 and Switch on May 14, 2024.

Rabbit and Bear Studios discussed how Eiyuden Chronicle DLC codes will be sent out and explained why content was cut.

Rabbit and Bear Studios took to Kickstarter to go over the distribution of Eiyuden Chronicle DLC codes, as well as address content cut from the final release like the Golden Cat and asynchronous gameplay. Many of the issues addressed are covered in a FAQs on the developer's official site

There's no release window for the add-ons yet. However, Rabbit and Bear confirmed that people who backed the Eiyuden Chronicle Kickstarter will get their DLC codes for it via Yetee Hub. The people who supported the crowdfunding campaign will get DLC 1-3. Once codes are ready, the developer will announce it via another update.

As for Eiyuden Chronicle cut content, these fall into completely absent elements like asynchronous gameplay and Golden Cat items or altered items like Citadel Defense and Ranking Mode. In the case of the completely absent items, asynchronous gameplay was removed when a Switch version was added and will never appear. The Golden Cat was omitted due to it being designed to be a "backer-only" item for castles. Citadel Defense was changed to Mock Battle. The Ranking Mode was scrapped when asynchronous gameplay was and replaced with personal rankings of heroes. It also noted how the citadel and flag customization were scaled back once the scope of the game and players' bases increased.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and DLC 1-3 are in development.

Uniqlo Kaiju No 8 Shirts Are in Stores Now

New anime shirts are at Uniqlo, and this time they are for the series Kaiju No 8. People can find the six unisex styles both in-stores and online.

As usual, the shirts are $24.90 each. They are designed for adults. The smallest size is XXS, and the largest is XXXL. Some of the shirts involve specific characters. For example, there's one with Kafka and Mina, another with Soshiro, a solo Kaiju No 8 one, and one with Kafka that also shows his Kaiju No 8 identity. The remaining two feature the full JAKDF Third Division and the Monster Sweeper crews.

Here's a full look at the Kaiju No 8 Uniqlo collection of shirts. While most have designs on the front and back, the Kafka/Kaiju and Kafka and Mina ones do not.

This is one of many Uniqlo crossover collections to appear over the last few weeks. For May the Fourth, Star Wars shirts appeared. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom ones appeared before that. April 2024 started with a Detective Conan/Case Closed collection.

Gundam Zeon Glasses featured inside Zaku head case

Owndays revealed a new collection of collaboration glasses inspired by the Principality of Zeon from Mobile Suit Gundam. The lineup will consist of glasses and sunglasses colored after Char Aznable and the Zaku II. However, the brand also revealed that it will produce 1/7 scale heads of Char Aznable's custom Zaku II that can also act as a unique glasses case.

The case will emulate the Zaku II head's functionalities. It will include the commander's antenna which the owner can optionally remove and the mono eye camera that can glow and be moved. When both layers are opened, it will reveal a case that can house up to four pairs of glasses. The promotional webpage also includes a QR code that people worldwide can scan with their mobile devices to spawn an AR model of the head.

The big case will be available on its own at ¥49,500 (~$318). Owndays is also offering bundles that include extra pairs of glasses and sunglasses. The 'Char' Collection featuring red glasses and the 'Zeon' Collection colored after the regular Zaku II's khaki will each cost ¥63,450 (~$407.35). The complete 'Perfect' Collection will include all four items with a grand total of ¥82,350 (~$528.65).

Owndays has also uploaded a trailer showing a CG model of the Zaku head glasses case:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcOUT2Uphf0

People who cannot afford the pricey Zaku head case can also opt to buy just the glasses with regular Zeon-branded cases at more affordable prices. The glasses will be available individually at ¥13,000 (~$83.50), while the sunglasses will cost even less at ¥8,000 (~$51.35).

There have been more releases of unique merchandise themed after the Gundam franchise, especially the Universal Century titles that feature Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. Earlier in 2024, Bandai revealed acrylic stands and plates of Universal Century faction and pilot logos that can glow in the dark. It has also released mechanical busts of the Sazabi from Char's Counterattack via Gashapon.

Public sales for the Mobile Suit Gundam-themed Principality of Zeon glasses and Char Aznable's Zaku II head glasses case will open on May 17, 2024. However, pre-orders for the items are also available immediately, and Owndays may end the sales earlier if it has run out of stock.

Tokimeki no Mirai Chizu - new Love Live visual novel

Bushiroad has revealed a new Love Live game that is a Switch visual novel and will feature characters from the Nijigasaki High School Idol Club. The Japanese title will be Tokimeki no Mirai Chizu.

Despite having the word "Tokimeki" in the title, this visual novel will have no relation whatsoever with Konami's Tokimeki Memorial franchise. The title Tokimeki no Mirai Chizu can also be translated to "The Heart-Throbbing Future Map."

Bushiroad has also published a new Japanese X account for the Love Live game. However, it has still yet to divulge details on the new title, including its release date. The catchphrase on both the pinned tweet and the official website teases a school life between "you" and the 12 people, which implies that the player will act as an original protagonist who can interact with members of the Idol Club in the Nijigasaki High School.

Once released, the visual novel will be available to purchase and play on the Nintendo Switch for the foreseeable future. Bushiroad used to launch Love Live: School Idol Festival 2 as a sequel to its mobile game in April 2023. However, the Japanese release's abrupt shutdown in March 2024 led to a bizarre situation for the global version. Bushiroad announced that services for the global release would start in February 2024 and end three months later in May 2024.

The Love Live Nijigasaki High School Idol Club visual novel Tokimeki no Mirai Chizu will be available for Nintendo Switch.
