Wuthering Waves tier list for 1.0 - best characters June 2024

AOC just rewrote the rules on 4K monitor prices

AOC has just announced two new incredibly cheap 4K monitors, the AOC U27B3A and U27B3AF, and while they don't boast stunning gaming specs, they look set to provide a super-sharp image with the great viewing angles of their IPS LCD panels. While AOC's new 27-inch monitors are unlikely to disturb the top spots on our best gaming monitor guide, they're clearly up to the task of gaming as well.      4K gaming on Unreal Engine 5 has a problem, but there is a fix

Infuse Studio co-founder Jacob Sutton has claimed that Unreal Engine 5 enforces the use of Temporal Super Resolution (TSR) because games running natively at 4K in the engine can't achieve a desirable frame rate.

Even if you have the best graphics card, it looks like Unreal Engine 5 games are better off running through resolution scaling tech as Epic, according to Sutton, requires the use of its built-in Nvidia DLSS-like scaling to achieve acceptable frame rates at such high resolutions.

In the past I've described Phantom Blade Zero, the foetid and frantic new action-RPG from Chinese studio S-Game, as a Soulslike, and more specifically a Sekirolike. I must now hang my head and await the executioner's ludicrously oversized hammer, for while Phantom Blade Zero's ambience and layouts owe something to From's work, the moment-to-moment has just as much in common with older hack-and-slash games such as Ninja Gaiden. I played a bit of it at Summer Game Fest this week, and while I'm not rushing out to preorder (I never am, in fairness), I think it could be a good 'un.

Ten years ago, we were drowning in early access survival games about chopping trees and crafting camp fires. Rust pit monstrous players against one another, DayZ had us dashing around for beans and bleach, while The Forest creeped us the hell out in a dark jungle. There was even a week-long celebration here at RPS called survival week to get the genre out of our systems. A lot of those games have since graduated to a full 1.0 release, but one survivalist shambled on. 7 Days To Die is a solid sandbox craft 'em up with zombie hordes, and it never left the comfort of its early access log cabin surrounded by spikes and land mines. But a (tentative) release date is finally on the horizon, according to the developers. And it's quite soon.

The demo in question was for Monster Hunter Wilds, which they probably should rename Monster Hadron Collider in that a major selling point appears to be making the megafauna converge and murder each other. It's possible to do this in previous games, especially 2018's Monster Hunter: World, but not like this. Not like this. Alas for the Alpha Doshaguma. Mental Salvo describes itself as having an "infinite open world" in which you can do so many things, "they're impossible to list". Were this a game from a triple-A publisher, I'd be heading down to their compound with some powerful magnets and cannisters of highly concentrated acid to wipe out their ungodly creation before it replaces the fundamental particles of our universe with waypoints. But Mental Salvo is actually the work of new indie imaginini (yes, no capital-I), and is a "top down art adventure with light RPG elements" that is perhaps a bit ZANY but also, refreshingly playful in essentially being about poking a big white screen to see what tumbles out of it.

New chibi Devil May Cry series collaboration in Capcom Cafe

Capcom revealed that a new Devil May Cry collaboration event starring multiple characters will appear temporarily at its Japanese cafe outlets between July 2024 and August 2024. It will newly feature chibi illustrations of Dante, Vergil, Lady, Nero, and V. The event will be available at both Capcom Cafe outlets on Grandscape Ikebukuro in Tokyo and Daimaru Umeda in Osaka.

Capcom Cafe frequently holds Devil May Cry collaborations in an almost yearly basis. Prior examples included a Dante pizza burger in 2020. But while Capcom had held a collaboration featuring multiple versions of the same characters in 2022, it will focus on a single version for each character in the upcoming 2024 edition.

Dante and Vergil will appear in their Devil May Cry 3 attires, while Lady and Nero's appearances will be based on Devil May Cry 4. The fifth and last character featured in the key visual will be V, who made his debut in Devil May Cry 5, the series' latest mainline entry to date.

The new Devil May Cry collaboration event will appear at both Capcom Cafe outlets in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, and Umeda, Osaka, from July 5, 2024, to August 8, 2024. Capcom will reveal more details about the collaboration, including the menu and merchandise, in the near future.

Evangelion Crossing Expo returns to Tokyo in September 2024

A long-running Evangelion expo series will make its return to the city where it all started. Khara has announced that it will hold a new Evangelion Crossing Expo in Tokyo from mid-September 2024 to October 2024. The venue will be different though, as the company will hold it at the Roppongi Museum instead of Shibuya Hikarie. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Evangelion Crossing Expo is a series of exhibitions that display numerous works and products derived from the anime series. The collection ranges from figures of characters and EVA units to pachinko machines and vehicle liveries.

The first-ever expo in the series launched in Tokyo at Shibuya Hikarie in July 2022. Since then, Khara held successive expos in Osaka in December 2022, Fukuoka in April 2023, Akita in July 2023, Niigata in December 2023, and Nagoya in February 2024. As of this announcement, the company is preparing to hold the next expo that will take place in Aomori at New's Hall from July 6, 2024, to September 1, 2024.

However, Khara will not end the expo series with the return to Tokyo. The company has confirmed that it will hold another expo in Shizuoka at the Shimizu Cultural Center Marinart from December 2024 to January 2025. The company has also stated its intention to add even more cities across Japan to the list in the future.

The Evangelion Crossing Expo will re-appear in Tokyo at the Roppongi Museum from September 13, 2024, to October 22, 2024.

holoearth version 0.8.0

The Holoearth Version 0.8.0 update will add combat and survival features. In addition, the simulation room will be larger and there will be a day-night cycle. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Version 0.8.0 of Holoearth go live on June 17, 2024. Cover already announced this back in April 2024, though that reveal didn't involve a concrete release date. You can watch the trailer here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFyG9TbBLmg

In the trailer, we can watch the sky turn from night to day. We also get the first example of combat in Holoearth, as we get to see a battle. You can also throw items at enemies and attack them with your swords. Defeating them can also let you level up. The trailer doesn't show too much of what you can do to survive in the wild, but we can see the avatar player sitting next to a fire outside. There will also be 36 new items to customize your avatar and over 200 new items for your house.

At night, you'll need to use a torch or campfire to see things around you. Defeating monsters will let you gain materials and ingredients. You can then use those items to craft various items or cook different meals. You'll need to do so to prevent hunger and dehydration, which can affect your stamina.

Holoearth is available on the Windows PC and Version 0.8.0 will come out on June 17, 2024. To commemorate this, you'll be able to collect 300 Holocoins. However, this offer will only be available until August 14, 2024.

The song was made in collaboration with Skrillex, and the visualizer features art from Tetsuya Nomura, director and creator of the series. Utada is also set to begin a world tour in July, 2024, in support of their new album Science Fiction. The tour also has a spread of merchandise associated with it, including several t-shirts, mugs, hats, towels, and key-chains.

Review: Monster Hunter Stories Feels Even More Like an Anime

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is an amazing game. So much so that it might be people's first exposure to the spin-off series! Capcom's attempting to rectify that while also bringing up its start with a Monster Hunter Stories remaster that is a definitive edition with everything anyone worldwide could want. While elements of it mean it can feel better suited for a younger audience and it isn't as rich as the original title, the adjustments and additions make it feel even more like an anime romp. (Though watching the Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On anime based on it on Crunchyroll is still an option too!)

In a world filled with people who hunt monsters, you and your childhood friends Cheval and Lilia grew up in the blissful Hakum Village seeing them as Monstie friends. The dream was to become Riders, those who fought alongside Monsties like partners for the good of your village. The three of you even managed to befriend a newly-hatched Rathalos before becoming Riders! However, after the Black Blight caused a Nargacuga to become corrupted and go on a rampage at the village, killing Cheval's mom and causing the Rathalos to disappear in the process, everything changed. Years later, Lilia's following her own path, Cheval's struck out on a course of revenge, and you're left to become a Rider, face the Black Blight, and maybe save the world in the process.

Image via Capcom

Clearly, it's the sort of tale you'd find in any anime or manga geared toward kids searching for an action-packed coming of age story of friendship and redemption!

There's a set sort of gameplay loop for each area in Monster Hunter Stories. You'll roam around fairly contained locations, facing monsters while fighting alongside ones you've tamed. Resources can be gathered, either for crafting or quests. Monster Dens can be explored to get eggs for fresh Monstie allies. As you complete major quests with your most appropriate Monsties, you'll get opportunities to explore more, deal with the Black Blight contagion, and befriend more creatures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T7JMD7kUj4&ab_channel=MonsterHunter

Battles are all turn-based, with the player avatar and one monster out at all times. The attack type triangle means using power, speed, and technique moves in a rock-paper-scissor fashion to best opponents. Ones that retreat may lead you to a den with their eggs. You might also break off parts, based on the fight. Fights against other Riders means your Monstie only attacks the other human, while you attack their monster, all until one of the two sides' three hearts drops to zero first. It's all a very anime, or even anime RPG, approach.

Part of the increased anime feel stems from Monster Hunter Stories being fully voiced. I went with the English voice acting, as it was shockingly solid. It really adds to the immersion and makes the whole experience feel more fleshed out. The game always had this vibrant essence with a plotline that wouldn't be out of place in Shonen Jump, so now it just feels more appropriate and in line with those tales.

This also pairs well with the crisper visuals. While some of the textures for environments don't feel like they held up as well with the update, the character and monster models in Monster Hunter Stories look so vivid. They feel a bit more alive, with the occasional exaggerated features really adding to the personalities of every person and creature you encounter.

The inclusion of Museum Mode in the Monster Hunter Stories remaster adds to it as well. It's like looking through an art book for your favorite anime, especially in the characters and monsters sections. Both of them really show how certain features of existing characters were adjusted to make them fit into this world. Likewise, you can better see the consistency across the designs for different people to make certain characteristic pop, affiliations evident, and natures come through in expressions.

It's also great to see how Monster Hunter Stories really acts as a director's cut of sorts in the remaster. This is because this version included some of the past Japanese updates that weren't present worldwide. Extra monsters are great, and I was really happy about Kushala Daora. The Tower of Illusion does seem to help with replay too. And yes, in the Switch version the original Japanese 3DS amiibo still work.

However, the downside to the Monster Hunter Stories remaster is that it is coming after the stellar sequel. The story felt as thought it was stronger and had more widespread appeal, andthis original outing does still feel like it skews toward a much younger audience. Especially with the constant handholding throughout the entire first region in the game. Enemy encounters still don't feel as satisfying, and messing with genes via Stimulants isn't as fun or prevalent as in the sequel. Locations also feel smaller. There is definite value in playing the first game! We can see the foundation that was forged here and it's novel for its cartoonish nature. I'd just recommend taking some breathing room and not going from the sequel to the original, or you may feel disappointed.

Monster Hunter Stories remains a vibrant anime romp through a world that fuses Monster Hunter elements with Pokemon-esque creature collection and training. It can feel a bit dated compared to the sequel, and the direction may make it more welcome to younger gamers. However, it's a colorful, entertaining romp and this iteration feels like the definitive release.

The Monster Hunter Stories remaster is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Other versions of the game can be found on the 3DS and iOS devices via Apple Arcade.

People residing in the United States and Canada can place their orders on Good Smile Online Shop US, while those living elsewhere worldwide can head to the Japanese international web store. A teaser image of A2's unpainted figure prototype is available to view via Good Smile Company's official X account:

Goku Ultra Instinct_2 Dragon Ball Sparking Zero

During Summer Game Fest 2024, I was given the opportunity to play Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. While I was given a limited number of characters to choose from, that didn't make the experience any less enjoyable. The cel-shaded characters look fantastic, and having the English voice cast reprise their roles made jumping into it all the more exciting somehow. It felt like being a kid again, eager to watch how the Cell Saga would unfold or what new power level Goku, Vegeta, or Gohan would unlock in some miraculous turn of events.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is every bit a fresh entry in the Budokai Tenkaichi series down to the controls. Everything is simplified, with attacks and dodges being easy to execute in comparison to Dragon Ball FighterZ. Instead, players navigate a 3D space where they can move to the side to avoid blasts, teleport behind their opponents, or ascend and descend through massive environments. What makes it different from its predecessors, however, is the Sparking system, which allows for you to perform a special attack associated with the character you're controlling. You need to charge your ki in order to perform this skill, along with anything that isn't just a quick jab or a kick, so you need to make sure you're in the clear to avoid taking damage or getting absolutely destroyed by your opponent.

Image via Bandai Namco

There were several moments where I audibly shouted in excitement as I triggered environmental effects that included the destruction of the World Martial Arts Tournament stage as Majin Vegeta when using Final Explosion. (Yes, if you use Final Explosion you can, in fact, K.O. yourself.) Or when I was able to fuse Goku and Vegeta to create Gogeta to pummel Buu into the ground. Moments like these make Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero exciting. While I wasn't entirely sure how I managed to fuse Goku and Vegeta, other than the requirement being that the versions you select are from the same arc, it was still exciting.

Other than triggering these effects and fusions I spent a lot of time constructing teams that were accurate to certain showdowns in the Cell and Buu Saga. I played as Android 17 with Android 18 as my secondary character against Goku, Yamcha, and Piccolo. I blew myself up as Majin Vegeta while fighting Buu. But just to test the general strength of characters I also just picked a whole slew of Goku to fight Golden Frieza and Beerus.

Image via Bandai Namco

I was informed that not all of the characters are balanced, but they were instead made to be accurate to their appearances in the Dragon Ball series. This meant characters like Mr. Satan would not be able to fly. Additionally, characters like Golden Frieza and Beerus would be exceptionally powerful. However, this didn't stop me. I managed to beat the CPU with little effort, but I still found the game fun and these little skirmishes were great to learn the base mechanics of Sparking Zero.

Everything I've seen has me extremely hopeful for the full release of Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero. Even with the limited amount of characters we were given, the game was great. It was everything I remembered about Budokai Tenkaichi, and encapsulated the feeling of turning on my GameCube and squaring up against my friends. Bandai Namco has more than certainly captured nostalgia in a bottle, and while Sparking Zero may not turn out to be the most balanced fighter, it sure is a hell of a lot of fun.

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero will come to the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC worldwide, and its official release date is October 11, 2024. The official website is also live now.

lord of the rings war of the rohirrim

Warner Bros Japan will release The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim some time in December 2024. Like the Gollum game, this will take place before the main trilogy of movies. [Thanks, Game Watch!]

Studio Sola Entertainment will be the studio in charge of the movie. Kenji Kamiyama will serve as the director. Past works Kamiyama directed include Eden of the East, Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim takes place about 183 years before the movies and follows Helm Hammerhand, who is a king of Rohan. He and his family must defend the country from Dunlendings. As a note, Helm's Deep, the location of the climatic battle in The Two Towers, was named after him.

New Line Cinema announced the film back in 2021 during the 20th anniversary of the The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Phillippa Boyens, who co-wrote the film trilogy, is a consultant and producer for The War of the Rohirrim. She had been the one to insist on setting the film in Rohan, as it would be familiar to fans of the movies.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will come out in December 2024.

pokemon vivillon plushes

The Pokemon Center Japanese Twitter (X) account revealed that there will be plushes of Vivillon from Pokemon Generation VI. There will be twenty different variations of Vivillon, to match with the twenty different types of wing patterns there are in the game.

https://twitter.com/pokemoncenterPR/status/1800724738467148028

These Vivillon plushes are part of the Pokemon Fit line of toys. They're called "Pokemon Fit" because they're small enough to fit in your hand, and it features Pokemon from all of the different regions. Each push costs 1980 JPY, which would convert to around $17.30. You'll be able to stat ordering them from the Pokemon Center store from June 13, 2024. However, the North American version of the store does not carry them.

Vivillon first debuted in Pokemon X and Y as the Butterfree clone of that generation. Its wing pattern depends on the real-world geographic location you spawn the Pokemon in. For example, those in Taiwan or Hong Kong would get a Monsoon pattern on their Vivillon. Meanwhile, those in most of Japan would get Elegant. This was likely to encourage trading, especially since as a 3DS game, X and Y could take advantage of services like StreetPass even when you're abroad.

Pokemon X and Y was on the Nintendo 3DS. The latest mainline entry in the Pokemon series is Scarlet and Violet, which is readily available on the Nintendo Switch. The only type of Vivillon in Scarlet and Violet is the Fancy Pattern unless you send a postcard from Pokemon Go.
