PCGamesN Wednesday, August 28, 2024 11:43 AM One of this autumn's most anticipated new games is Frostpunk 2, sequel to a 2018 strategy, survival, and city building hybrid that combines the settlement management of Cities Skylines 2 or Against the Storm with the apocalyptic setting of Fallout 4 or Wasteland 3. As a follow up to one of the most striking strategy games of the past several years, we were already interested enough to see how Frostpunk 2 would turn out when it arrives next month. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 28, 2024 11:25 AM August 28, 2024 We've added a new Monopoly Go dice link for free dice rolls. How can I get Monopoly Go free dice links? You're going to need to get your hands on Monopoly dice rolls, but they are difficult to come by no matter how far you are into the board game. There are ways to earn additional dice rolls, including logging into the game every day to collect daily bonuses, progressing further in the game, and inviting friends to try Monopoly Go. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 28, 2024 11:06 AM We've seen plenty of older games getting treated to a dose of Nvidia RTX magic, including Doom and Quake II, but now we've been given a taster of how Wolfenstein 3D ray tracing would look with full RTX path tracing, and the result is both beautiful and bewildering in equal measure. Arguably the original first-person shooter, Wolfenstein 3D wowed 90s PC gamers (including me) with its fast-paced and surprisingly smooth 3D action on our big, beige boxes, although it all looks quite primitive by today's standards. However, these screenshots show a secret Wolfenstein 3D level in Doom 2, with the lighting handled by an RTX path on one of today's best graphics cards, making the game almost unrecognizable. It doesn't matter if your favorite Genshin Impact character is on one of the lower tiers; you can still make it work with our recommended Genshin Impact builds. Being on a lower tier in the free PC game means that there are better alternatives, or the character needs a very specific build or team to shine. PCGamesN Wednesday, August 28, 2024 9:23 AM Microsoft has just released a new Windows update aimed at boosting gaming performance on the latest AMD CPUs, as well as Intel CPUs to a lesser extent, without having to update to a whole new preview build of Windows. The move comes after evidence emerged that AMD CPU frame rates were being held back by Windows 11's thread director, with a fix coming in the forthcoming Windows 11 24H2 update. However, you can now apply this AMD Windows update to your existing Windows 11 23H2 installation. While none of AMD's new Ryzen 9000 CPUs were expected to challenge the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for the best gaming CPU title, some tests of the new CPUs showed gaming performance that was worse than expected, and it turned out that updating to the preview build of Windows 24H2 resulted in huge performance gains on the chips. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 28, 2024 10:50 AM Every now and then I reflect on the statistically determined average age of a Gamer – what is it now, 36, 37? Please let it still be under 40 – and realise with alarm that, by extrapolation, a lot of the people reading this probably have children. Augh, children! Please excuse me while I go stand on a chair, clutching a broom. I've never understood the craze for generating smaller versions of yourself. It's one of those weirder subcultures you read about in the papers, but rarely observe in daily life. I do, however, understand the appeal of same-screen co-op games like Run From Mummies - which, being a bloodless comedy dungeon romp, seems like a fair pick for those encumbered with boisterous selfspawn. Don't worry, the "mummies" of the title are just regular old disembowelled corpses wrapped in cloth, not those sinister, non-embalmed "mothers" you've been hearing about down the grocers. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 28, 2024 10:00 AM Sometimes you forget to build a graveyard. It happens. When ten citizens dropped dead on the roads of one of my settlements in post-apocalyptic city builder Endzone 2, I had to work fast to avoid a sickness breaking out. But graveyards require a lot of space, and if you've already filled your shanty town with a sea of corrugated metal roofs, this poses a problem. Welcome to the pleasant headache of town planning in a post-nuclear world, where most of the land is brown and uninhabitable. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 28, 2024 9:26 AM I do like a combat system that resembles an overflowing dressmaker's draw, full of bouncing rubber thimbles and coils of bunting. While it's not quite as chaotic and entangled as say, Disgaea, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of those games. I'd call it "baroque", but that would be out of synch with developer Sandfall Interactive's stated influences: the new RPG takes place in a molten and fragmented fantasy world based on the Belle Époque or "beautiful era" of late 19th century France. Your job as player is to stop a sorcerous Paintress from painting everybody over a certain age out of existence. We'll circle back to the plot, though. First, the excessively ornate battlin'. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 28, 2024 7:00 AM Stormgate is a confusing proposition. It's an RTS directed by former Blizzard developers that is almost, but not quite, entirely unlike StarCraft. It's a free-to-play game, but has a business model that makes you feel like you're getting a rougher deal than if you just dropped thirty notes for it outright. It's available now in Early Access, but has already been available in a kind of gravity-defying Super Early Access for several weeks (which you had to pay to get into). All of which has made me feel very tired, and yearn for the days when you went into a shop and bought a game in a box for a set amount of money, and the whole game was in the box and you went home and put it on your PC and played it until your mum said "Richard!" (only my mum calls me Richard) "get off that computer and go outside and get some exercise! Do you want to be dead at 35?" Well, I'm 36 now mum. Nearly 37. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Wednesday, August 28, 2024 4:17 AM Exterminatus. Exterminatus. You're all exterminatused. None of you are free of sin. Except, maybe Focus Interactive are actually? While it would be a monumentally silly heel turn to go back on their promise of only charging Space Marine 2 players extra for cosmetics a mere week and change before the shooter's September 9 release date, the new year one roadmap does at least look piously forthright. Chatting to James at Gamescom recently (possibly from his cathedral ship made out of graphics cards), Saber boss Tim Willits dragged out an armoured horse and proceeded to flog it mercilessly, saying that players don't want to be sold the equivalent of Oblivion's infamous deadbeat daddy of DLCs. As several of you identified, this seemed like an odd comparison when Spice Maureen 2 specifically plans to charge for comparable cosmetics, although I imagine Willits was referencing the "packs" that his space game's baubles come in. "Our fans never thought we ripped them off in World War Z," he said, comparing Space Marine 2's optional spendables to that game. Whether you see the cosmetic's pricing as egregious or not, yesterday's roadmap does look to make good on Saber's promise to keep wearables and playables separate. Here's it: |

Hibino Corporation has announced that it will release new smart toys based on Square Enix's NieR Automata under the Anitech brand. The company will produce a Virtuous Contract sword that comes with a remote control feature for the following Pod 042 toy.
The Virtuous Contract sword will appear earlier in the Fall season of 2025. With a length of over 130 cm (51.18 inches), it will generate sound effects and lights as the owner swings it around. The sword will also contain voice lines from its original user 2B.
The Pod 042 toy will not be available until 2027, but it will be the main highlight of this collection. It will feature an automatic transformation feature, and the owner will also be able to remotely control it via the Virtuous Contract sword or a smartphone app. It can also fire a laser beam with sound effects. In addition, the pod will also have voice lines ranging from alarm messages at specified times to special messages that play when the owner pats it.
The Anitech smart toys of NieR Automata Virtuous Contract sword and Pod 042 will be available in Fall 2025 and 2027, respectively. Bandai Namco has already announced that it will end its service for Blue Protocol in January 2025. However, it will not simply cease adding content to the MMORPG that has been running in Japan since mid-June 2023. On the Japanese announcement page, Bandai Namco has also published a closure roadmap for Blue Protocol.
The Blue Protocol closure roadmap reveals that Bandai Namco will continue adding content like event missions and Gasha costume banners to the game until December 2024. The final major update will appear on December 18, 2024. It will add a new story chapter with a new map and a maximum level cap increase. But even though the list is already very extensive, Bandai Namco noted that not all content updates are listed in this roadmap.
Here is the extensive roadmap for the upcoming closure of Blue Protocol:
Blue Protocol is available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X in Japan until January 18, 2025.

Yusuke Tomizawa, the producer for the Tales series, has released a video message on YouTube in regards to the Tales Remastered Project, as well as the 30th anniversary of the series. Bandai Namco plans to continue remastering past titles.
Here is the producer message from Tomizawa-P for the 30th anniversary of the Tales series:
The video is a little under four minutes and a half long. According to Tomizawa, the Remastered Project is part of the 30th anniversary commemorations. This means there may be more to come from the studio. The Remastered Project will focus on making past games accessible and easy to play on new consoles in an enjoyable way for both newcomers and veterans. We can see this in QoL improvements for Graces f. For example, the Grade Shop's accessibility from the start will make the game much easier. It's unclear if the Remastered Project will bring Japanese-exclusive titles to the west as well.
The rest of the video focuses on describing the general plot and worldview of Tales of Graces. It takes place in Ephinea, which has three major countries in it. Asbel Lhant, the future lord of Lhant, meets a mysterious amnesiac girl named Sophie, and befriends her and Prince Richard. Tragedy strikes and the children go their separate ways. When they reunite down the line, they're different people in a different political clilmate. The video mentions that reception to the game's story and characters have been positive, and the combat system in particular received acclaim. These reasons, as well as constant requests, are why Graces f is the first game to receive a remaster as part of the Remastered Project.
Tales of Graces f Remastered will come out on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC on January 17, 2025.

After getting a chance to watch an NIS America staff member play through the upcoming JRPG Reynatis, I was struck by the various forces at play in the game. In many ways, it seems like a player might need to balance certain elements, such as which mode to use in battle and their stress levels. While there's still more to see and confirm, it seems like the sort of game where a player may need to pay attention.
During my hands-off preview session, I was able to watch an NIS America employee sample two sections. The first featured Magic Enforcement Administration (MEA) agent Sari Nishijima work alongside her team members Kiichiro Ukai and Masayoshi Dogo on a search for Wizarts, markings in the city enabling certain magical abilities and skills, around Shibuya. In the other portion, there was a briefer look at wizards Marin Kirizumi and Nika Meguro as the two happen upon each other in Shibuya and attempt to live freely as wizards. From there, brief glimpses of exploration and battle helped set the stage for the title.
One of the ways the balancing act in Reynatis came up in gameplay during the preview session involved actions wizards take. We quickly learned that Stress is a key factor. It's caused by interactions with people in the city and around you, and reduced if you grab a drink. Petting cats around town was also mentioned as a way to calm someone down.
It's a critical element, since someone being stressed means they won't be able to hide that they are a wizard. This will make them visible in the city, resulting in undue attention from people and the MEA and the inability to take on certain quests. Those additional enemy encounters can be dangerous, as if you're stressed going into a fight, you will only be able to take advantage of Liberation Mode. This lets you use your magical abilities to slow down time, quickly attack, and deal major supernatural damage. However, you won't be able to dodge like you do in Suppression Mode and enemies move faster. If your Stress is low, then you can switch between the two modes in a fight to more tactfully take advantage of each one to build up magical power and evade attacks before striking back hard.
There's also the idea of some humans towing the fine line between safety and danger. This is due to the use of an illegal drug on the streets called Rubrum that allows someone without magical talent to see and use wizarts. During the Sari portion of the story on display in the hands-off preview, part of the mission involved her team of three investigating Wizarts and happening upon a human who had been regularly taking this drug. As a result, he'd hit his limit and, during the encounter, transformed into a monster because of that use.
Part of that balance seems to be between real-world and fantasy elements too, from what I saw. The MEA building in one part of the preview seemed ordinary enough as Sari explored it, but there were also these magical Wizart and wizard elements. Their uniforms also stood out in a way normal governmental employees' would. This doesn't even get into the eventual NEO The World Ends with Youelements that NIS promised. But once someone heads out into the city, Shibuya looks as it would in the real world. While I watched the NIS America employee play and visit a store, familiar products showed up. There was C.C. Lemon, my favorite lemon-flavored soda and Yakuza series staple. BOSS coffee showed up as well.
All of this makes me curious how difficult it will be to maintain these types of balances when I'm playing Reynatis firsthand. It seems like there's a lot to manage here. Especially considering the penalties wizards can face if they get careless.
Reynatis will come to the PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC in North America and Europe on September 27, 2024, and then in Australia on October 4, 2024.

The Famicom Detective Club duology of remakes on Nintendo Switch instantly gripped me, as a fan of visual novels and mystery titles. When Nintendo revealed a third, original title in the series for the Switch, I couldn't be more elated. It turns out Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is narrowly my favorite in the series and possibly the darkest game Nintendo has ever made.
Emio - The Smiling Man involves an immediately compelling mystery about a student who is found dead with a paper bag over his head. On the front, a smiley face is drawn on it. This initial mystery only gets deeper, as it connects to an urban legend and previous murder case. Emio, the titular creepy paper bag-wearing killer, is horrifying in all the right ways from the start.
The infrequent horror scenes focusing on Emio put this title more in line tonally with The Girl Who Stands Behind. However, Emio - The Smiling Man stands on its own as one of the most unique games in Nintendo's history. Its general gameplay will be familiar to existing fans of Famicom Detective Club or point-and-click adventures. Fortunately for newcomers, I did find the puzzle mechanics more straightforward, yet engaging, than ones in the past two titles.
Every scene in Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club boils down to a few key interactions. You think, talk, engage, and examine your way to the next part of the story. Most of the game involves using these key features to learn new details about the case as you question various witnesses and notable figures. Those characters look better than ever, expanding upon the beautifully detailed designs from the remakes with even sharper visuals and some of the most active animations I've seen from a visual novel or adventure game.
While the investigations may sound boring or a bit too simple from a glance, they work like a puzzle. In one instance, you may need to ask about the same topic a few times before you unlock a new question. You might have to examine the environment to learn about a new subject to talk about. Eventually, these portions lead to crucial review sequences near the end of each chapter. They act like tests of your knowledge about certain events.
The gameplay might be linear, but Emio - The Smiling Man makes up for that with a new addition. Ayumi, the main character's sidekick and friend from past games, takes the role of the secondary playable protagonist for a portion of the experience. This perspective shift changes up the usual formula from the past two games in a significant way. You still play as the main character who you can name, but Ayumi has a slightly different investigative style. After all, she is able to question and interact with characters the protagonist is unable to meet. In addition, she has a much more gentle and calm approach. This idea leads to some of the game's more heartwarming and ground-breaking scenes.
Those few lighter moments are a welcome respite, given the heavy content in Emio - The Smiling Man. On its own, it already sounds like a pretty disturbing murder mystery. This is especially apparent when you take into account the original three murders of girls 18 years prior to the start of the game. However, it doesn't stop there.
Without giving too much away, some of the story elements and scenes the plot delved into shocked me. Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is far and away the darkest game I've ever played from Nintendo. It deals with some plot points that even the past two games didn't come close to addressing. There are some story beats, particularly towards the end, that I found difficult to experience.
I appreciate the developer going as far as it did with the Emio - The Smiling Man plot. It can be quite twisted at times, but it is all the more compelling because of this realism. That said, there are some occasional problems with pacing. For one, it overall feels just a tad bit shorter than I would have liked. In addition, it wraps up in a fascinatingly unique way that I can't get into here, but I imagine will be received in a mixed manner. The chapters also feel quite short, especially early on. This leads to a couple of twists, key characters, and plot devices feeling like they needed a bit more time to cook.
Even with the pacing problems, Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club is the best entry in the series yet. The puzzle-like investigative gameplay is straightforward, doing just enough to challenge the player without overwhelming or being too obscure. It all complements well with the excellent but a bit unique storytelling. This tale is not for every Switch player, being a bit too dark at times, but it is highly rewarding for those it appeals to.
Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club releases for the Nintendo Switch on August 29, 2024.
