Ara History Untold is the Civilization 7 rival to watch

4X games can be daunting, and the genre's high barrier for entry is normally enough to deter many from even getting started. Ara: History Untold doesn't subscribe to that notion, despite its gargantuan scope suggesting otherwise. I played Oxide's latest at Gamescom and quickly settled into its rhythms.

Two game changing FF14 quality-of-life features are on the way

Even though I'm still a Sprout 400 hours in, I know Final Fantasy 14 would benefit from more quality-of-life features. Dawntrail brought improved graphics and the two-dye system, but the MMO's avenues for communication could use work. I'm always staring at the chat box, be that milling around Limsa or in the midst of a tough trial, and Square Enix just showed off multiple ways it's looking to improve how we talk in-game.

Snag Yakuza's Kiryu arc for an astonishingly low price if you're quick

What's the best story in gaming? The Witcher, Metal Gear Solid, Baldur's Gate, Mass Effect, Red Dead Redemption - the list goes on, and you'll find different answers at every turn. But for me, it's tough to top the Yakuza games. The series has adopted the Japanese 'Like a Dragon' moniker since Yakuza 7, but prior to that we got a full seven-game series (including the masterful Yakuza 0) covering the extensive career of Kazuma Kiryu, one of the most eminently lovable protagonists in anything. If you've yet to experience his tale, now is the perfect time, as you can grab the full thing at a huge discount if you're fast.

New simulation game Ambulance Life is a fascinating race against time

Of all the many new PC games I saw at Gamescom 2024, Ambulance Life: A Paramedic Simulator is among those that surprised me most. Following on from developer Aesir Interactive's Police Simulator, the upcoming simulation game shifts across to another essential emergency service - the rapid response life of an ambulance paramedic. You're in charge of answering calls, diagnosing the situation, providing initial treatment, and making sure to get the patient back to hospital in time to give them the best chance of survival, and it's a remarkably compelling experience, especially as the stakes rack up.

Delta Force might be the next great Battlefield game

In a genre as saturated as FPS games, it can be hard to stand out from the pack. TiMi and Team Jade's hugely anticipated Delta Force bears more than a passing resemblance to EA's Battlefield 2042,  but I still came away from my hands-on Gamescom preview both willing it to - and hopeful that it can - step out from behind the shadow of the genre's titans.

Avowed's disappointing demo betrays its excellent world and combat

I've been enamored with Avowed ever since developer Obsidian released its first piece of key art. Adorned in swatches of color that wouldn't be out of place on my favorite tattoo artist's Instagram page, The Outer Worlds studio's take on medieval tales ditches the distilled gray and steel tones of Skyrim for something altogether different. Sitting down to play the game at Gamescom, I'm hoping it'll evoke the feeling of awe its art evokes.

Sundays are for more cat. She's reached the "follow me into the bathroom when I go downstairs at night for a wee" stage, but still won't come upstairs - which means I have to leave her alone for long periods while I work, which makes me feel bad. Before I unsuccessfully arrange yet more treats on the stairs, let's read this week's best writing about games (and game related things!)
