I've said it before and I'll say it again: Starfield mods have been the game's saving grace.      Half-Life 3 fan game resurrected after four years, demo coming soon

It's been 20 years since Gordon Freeman led the climactic assault on City 17, and you might be forgiven for thinking that Half-Life 3 will never, ever happen. Deadlock happened. But the return of Valve's greatest FPS game still feels, frankly, as far away as ever. On the contrary, Half-Life 3 - or at least, a would-be, fan-made version of Half-LIfe 3 - on its way, imminently. After four years of relative silence, the extremely ambitious Project Borealis is suddenly back, and there's a playable demo coming soon.

AMD has reportedly already snatched the PS6 contract from Intel

AMD is reportedly already lined up to make the CPU in the Sony PlayStation 6, after beating Intel to the contract, according to the latest reports. Thanks to its ability to integrate its CPU cores and Radeon GPU cores into the same silicon, AMD has long been a firm favorite among console makers, with its chips used in the PS4, PS5, and PS5 Pro, as well as the Xbox Series X, and Xbox One, among others.

However, Intel was apparently working hard to win the contract to make the chip in the Sony PS5's so-far-unannounced successor, which is expected to be called the PS6. AMD makes the best gaming CPU on the PC right now, in the form of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and while the company's GPU tech is lagging behind that of Nvidia at the moment when it comes to ray tracing, AMD has a longer pedigree than Intel when it comes to making fully-fledged gaming GPUs.

How to defend the antenna in Space Marine 2

How do you defend the antenna in Space Marine 2? The Tyranid-trampling horde shooter has more than its fair share of challenges. Between keeping the overwhelming number of smaller insectoids at bay and fending off Carnifex, there's a lot to keep track of. Perhaps the game's greatest obstacle, especially when playing on the hardest difficulties, surfaces when you're tasked with defending multiple structures from gargoyles.

At the end of the second Space Marine 2 story mission, Skyfire, your squad will not only have to dispatch the avian threat tearing its way through the integrity bars of four antennae, but you'll also have to contest with waves of tyrannids that get progressively more difficult. It's a miserable job solo, as your AI companions can go AWOL when dealing with the gargoyles, but taking full advantage of the tools the game gives you makes it doable. Read on to learn the tech you'll need to succeed in one of the co-op game's biggest trials.

In theory, vampires and immersive sims go together as naturally as bats and caves. Immersive sims tend to involve a balance of stealth, acrobatics, raw strength and crafty manipulation, and vampires are celebrated for all of these things. Despite this, actual vampire-themed immersive sims are rare. My list starts with Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines... and sort of ends there. In a devastating betrayal, Arkane Austin's Redfall wasn't an immersive sim but an open world co-op shooter (a not very good one). The much-delayed Bloodlines 2 was recently downgraded from immersive sim to RPG by new developers The Chinese Room. Arkane Lyon's Blade adaptation seems promising, but it's a ways off.

Here to paper over the immersive vamping gap in the market is Byte Barrel's Trust, "a new first-person shooter with immersive sim elements". It takes place in a world where the vampires are hunted for their blood, which has become an everyday human energy source, used for everything from car batteries to streetlights. The irony! I feel like, in the circumstances, the ideal solution would be for humans to let vampires suck their blood in return for vampires letting humans use their blood for electricity, but that wouldn't make for a very thrilling shooter. Anyway, here's the trailer.

To survive in looter-booter Pacific Drive you have to keep the paranormal station wagon you drive around in good nick. You're constantly repairing corroded doors and swapping out busted engine parts with cobbled-together technology. But maybe this tinkering was a little too much. Our review praised the game for its "trunk loads of atmosphere" but called the constant need to craft stuff "laborious". If you also felt this, then good news. An update now lets you fiddle the difficulty options a generous amount, say developers Ironwood Studios, making the game easier and bringing crafting needs right down.

Buuut... if you thought the opposite - that the game wasn't hard enough - you can now tick a box that makes hitting yourself with the trunk door kill you stone dead.

If you're a fan of rhythm games and fun bops, then you might want to bookmark ol' Hyperbeat. Set in a wireframe world, you're to chop, dodge or ride notes as you slam your "hyperknight" through a tunnel at high speed. There's a subtle, dreamy story element to your musical journey, with confusing dialogue and a nice cherry blossom tree. Hmmm, curious. Anyway yeah, it looks rad.

Tiny Glade has been a constant presence on TikTok for the last year or so. It's never far away. In between burrito recipes and hymns to the Fujifilm X100v, this gorgeous toylike art tool's gamely turning stretches of balmy meadow into semi-ruined castles, semi-ruined villages and semi-ruined citadels.

Dreamy and slightly haunted, it's conjured words like "bewitching" and "spellbinding" in the comments sections, too. It makes sense, really. Tiny Glade's a game about making rustic dioramas and then photographing them. It's not hard to imagine some exiled magical person might live in here among the rocks and reeds and wild heather.

Alruna And The Necro-Industrialists opens with paired quotes from T.S. Eliot's The Wasteland and Mad Max: Fury Road - a blend of influences that would typically get you kicked out of the Creative Writing Club for being simultaneously too fancy and too obvious, but the game beyond the epigraph looks pretty swish.

It's "a compact and high-density Metroidvania, with a focus on sequence-breaking and playing things out of order". It uses a square aspect display ratio calibrated to give wizened Game Boy enthusiasts the shakes, and is made up of 200 single-screen rooms that "slot into the larger puzzle-box of the world". Also, you play a thorn witch who looks a bit like 1950s Tinkerbell, with a touch of Betty Boop. Here's a trailer.

Splatoon 3 Won't Get Any New Events or Content Updates

Now that the Grand Festival Splatfest pitching Past, Present, and Future recently came to an end in September 2024 in Splatoon 3, Nintendo revealed that the game will stop receiving new events and regular content updates. Existing events will repeat.

While new regular Splatfest events and content updates are over, Nintendo reassured players that the seasonal Special Splatfests Splatoween, Frosty Fest, Spring Fest, and Summer Nights events will continue and will bring back returning themes. Previous events in the game modes Big Run, Eggstra Work, and Monthly Challenges will also continue appearing for the time being. However, Nintendo also announced that these 3 modes might cease to reappear in the future without prior notice.

In addition, Nintendo released a four-minute-long video revisiting all the past Splatfest events in Splatoon 3. The video features idol trio Deep Cut performing on the Grand Festival stage while the results and dates of each Splatfest appear on screen next to official themed artwork of the band members.

You can check out the Splatoon 3 Splatfest celebration video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cd3qYJRnI7E

Furthermore, the Splatoon X (formerly Twitter) official account showed that players that own any of the Squid Sisters, Off the Hook, or Deep Cut Amiibos can use them to revisit the Grand Festival venue. The next and final Splatoon 3 update will allow players to use this function without the need to be online. The Grand Festival revisit function allows players to skip to different parts of the festival from the Train Station main menu.

Splatoon 3 is readily available on the Nintendo Switch.

Hatsune Miku Expo 10th Anniversary Nendoroid Comes With Her Own Figure

The new Hatsune Miku Nendoroid designed in honor of the 10th anniversary of Miku Expo is on the way in 2025, and one of the accessories for this one is a small My Miku figure for her to hold. It will debut in Japan in April 2025 for ¥8,500, and worldwide in Q3 2025 for $54.99. The 10th anniversary event appeared on May 28, 2024, and this latest collectible is based on the official art of the Vocaloid for that year.

We saw a preliminary version of this figure back in August 2024. The final design hasn't really changed. You get three face plates with it. One features her smiling and blushing with her eyes closed, another has her winking and smirking, and the third makes it look like she is smiling and singing. Her twin tails can be as they are, with two pigtails, or you can swap them for two buns. You can also make this Hatsune Miku Nendoroid hold the white My Miku figure in her right hand. That miniature figure can also be posed in front of the Nendoroid.

Here's how that looks:

This is the most recently revealed Nendoroid. However, we did get a hint about the next one. In August 2024, Good Smile Company revealed the design for Snow Miku 2025.

The Hatsune Miku Nendoroid for 10th anniversary of Miku Expo will appear in Japan in April 2025 and the US in Q3 2025. Pre-orders will be open until October 23, 2024.

Shinobi Undercover Manga Debuts in Shonen Jump

There's another new Shonen Jump manga, and this one is Ippon Takegushi and Santa Mitarashi's Shinobi Undercover. The first chapter is available worldwide, and people can read it in English via MangaPlus and Viz Media

As the title suggests, Shinobi Undercover is about an undercover ninja. Yodaka the Nightjar has been assigned to protect a high schooler named Aoi Mukai. However, Yodaka is an introvert and extremely socially awkward. It's classified as a challenging mission, even before considering how bad Yodaka is at dealing with other people. Especially since, shortly after arriving, he realizes that other ninja are also around and undercover. He'll also need to deal with his new allies like Hibari the Skylark and Umineko the Gull as well.

Takegushi and Mitarashi worked on series together before. In 2021, they worked on Candy Flurry. Viz Media handled that release outside Japan as well.

This is the second week in a row a new Shonen Jump manga appeared. On September 8, 2024, the first chapter of Ichi the Witch appeared. That is a new series from Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun creator Osamu Nishi.

The first chapter of the Shinobi Undercover manga is available now, and chapter 2 will be available via Shonen Jump and on sites like MangaPlus and Viz Media on September 22, 2024.

A Japanese Persona 5: The Phantom X presentation will appear ahead of TGS 2024 on September 25, 2024. Additionally, the X (formerly Twitter) Japanese official account for the game is now up and running.

At the time of writing, it is unclear what the contents of the presentation will be and in which platform it will be available. More information will appear in the P5X Japanese X (Twitter) account. Aside from the aforementioned presentation, Persona 5: The Phantom X will be featured at TGS 2024 with a playable hands-on version of the game, as well as a photo op. The test version of P5X will be available at the Sega and Atlus booth area of Tokyo Game Show 2024.

In late July 2024, Sega registered a Japanese p5x.jp domain that hinted at the intentions of Sega and Perfect World to release Persona 5: The Phantom X in Japan. The presence of the game at Tokyo Game Show 2024 could be a hint that the Japanese version of Persona 5: The Phantom X might see a release date or window announced soon.

Ashley Taylor Is Playable in Madoka Magica Magia Exedra

The next Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra character trailer appeared, and this time it focuses on Ashley Taylor. She may be unfamiliar to some, as she previously only appeared in Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story

Sally Amaki voices Ashley in both Japanese and English, and the latest trailers show how she sounds in each language. The video focuses on a brief attack. We get to see her throw around Kumanosuke, her teddy bear, as she fights against witches. As her name suggests, she's from the United States. Because she loved Japanese culture, she headed to Japan, and along the way she became a magical girl.

Here's the English trailer for Ashley Taylor in Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR1pOpjpb_g&ab_channel=%E9%AD%94%E6%B3%95%E5%B0%91%E5%A5%B3%E3%81%BE%E3%81%A9%E3%81%8B%E2%98%86%E3%83%9E%E3%82%AE%E3%82%ABMagiaExedra%E3%80%90%E5%85%AC%E5%BC%8F%E3%80%91

And here's the Japanese one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpqTjI_Ctyg&ab_channel=%E9%AD%94%E6%B3%95%E5%B0%91%E5%A5%B3%E3%81%BE%E3%81%A9%E3%81%8B%E2%98%86%E3%83%9E%E3%82%AE%E3%82%ABMagiaExedra%E3%80%90%E5%85%AC%E5%BC%8F%E3%80%91

Many of the other characters we've seen announced for Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra have been ones who are more immediately recognizable. For example, we saw a video focused on Homura Akemi at the beginning of August 2024. That was followed by ones showing off Mami Tomoe and Yachiyo Nanami.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Magia Exedra will be available for mobile devices and the PC in Japanese and English via Steam in 2024.

Toushiro Hitsugaya Is the Next Bleach Rebirth of Souls Captain to Appear

Bandai Namco regularly releases Bleach Rebirth of Souls trailers every Monday, and Toushiro Hitsugaya is the star of the one for September 16, 2024. He marks the third active Gotei 13 captain to appear as a playable character in the game.

Like Rangiku Matsumoto, Hitsugaya is a part of Squad 10. His trailer begins by introducing him as the youngest captain. He was named so due to his talent. He wields the Zanpakuto Hyorinmaru, which allows him to deal ice damage. Unlike other characters, he has a special Tenso Jyurin gauge that can build up as he fights and attacks enemies. Being hit or not going on the offensive makes it drop. His two Spiritual Pressure attacks are Soten Hyogeki, which deals ranged ice damage, and Hyoryu Renbu lets you rush up to assault an enemy. Things close out with the Daiguren Hyorinmaru Bankai.

Here's the full Toushiro Hitsugaya Bleach Rebirth of Souls trailer.

In case you're curious about previously revealed fighters, here is the list of all of the Bleach Rebirth of Souls trailers released before the Toushiro Hitsugaya one.

Yes, there's still no dedicated Renji trailer yet, even though he is confirmed as a playable fighter.

Bleach Rebirth of Souls is in development for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The Bleach anime, including Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, can be found on Disney+ and Hulu. Part 3 of Thousand-Year Blood War anime adaptation begins airing on October 5, 2024. Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan.

ufo 50 review

UFO 50, the faux-retro compilation from the creators of games like Spelunky, Air, Land & Sea and Downwell, is finally releasing after a long development process. Which, well, makes sense! There are 50 games in here, and it didn't quite take them 50 times as long to make, so perhaps they can take that as a victory. And it seems like it was worth the extra effort, because it's largely a delight to play.

UFO 50's titles are, the developers insist, not minigames! And they're right; this isn't Mario Party. What they do offer, though, is a more concentrated experience than most games that would launch by themselves. The lengths vary, but if you like the process of learning a game more than what comes after, you'll enjoy that in UFO 50 every few hours.

Since it was made by a collective of folks used to creating their own stuff, they can feel very different in aims. Having a primarily-analog designer, Jon Perry, on board means a lot more tactical play, which we do love around here. Downwell creator Ojiro Fumoto's brief involvement with the release shows through in some super-quick action. These sorts of different minds add both to the variety of fun you'll have and to the feeling that it's a compilation of disparate releases from within an old game company.

ufo 50 review

It's important to note that this isn't a Retro Game Challenge sort of release. There are ideas that only work within the fictional retro context, for sure! But these are generally original game ideas, rather than straightforward '80s homages. They're all built for a fictional retro computer, which in practice means they share a color palette and resolution and a two-button control scheme. We do like the simplicity! There are a few of these games that would have benefited from in-game start button functionality for a menu or a third face button to keep from overlapping controls, but they stuck to their guns on that point and it does mean that these games are as tight and streamlined as it feels they could manage.

An example on the more conventional end is Grimstone. It replicates the grind-heavy feel of NES-era RPGs, implementing a timing-based battle system but otherwise sticking with the restrictions and ideas of the era. As a standalone game, it would be frustrating and generally lacking, but here it serves as an important part of the game's fictional fabric.

On the other end, you have games like disc-flicker Lords of Diskonia and deck-builder Party House, which clearly have their roots in the more modern analog game scene. But they handle them in a very video-game-like way. In Lords of Diskonia, for example, the opponent never misses. Bank shots? Wild combos? They can absolutely do it every time. The key is in exploiting the factors they don't take into account as frequently, like ending their turn in fog or leaving themselves vulnerable after their moves. This is very different from playing a human (which you can still do here, by the way), who can absolutely consider all the factors but won't necessarily keep 360-no-scoping you the whole time.

ufo 50 review
Screenshot by Siliconera

Many of the action games in the collection are what you'd call "Nintendo hard," the punishing sort of difficulty that many games of the era had to extend play time through repetition with limited resources and storage space to make new worlds. Though we're sure this will vary from person to person, we found the difficulty to vacillate somewhere between "totally doable" and "I might be able to beat this first level with enough practice, but that doesn't sound like a fun time."

In addition to "Nintendo hard," there's also sometimes "Spelunky hard," not afraid to be punishing and wipe progress away in an instant. This makes sense given the dev team, of course! And myriad factors make this an okay approach. The shorter included games and the quantity, in case you just want to bounce around and find what you like without feeling too bad about what you don't. A generation of players raised on Demon's Souls-like games. It does mean that, well, we're not beating some of these ourselves. But we're sure others will.

True to its retro feel, UFO 50 is a game that could really benefit from something like an instruction manual. As it stands, it's more like sifting through a collection of ROMs: you'll get the button commands in the menu and a one-sentence descriptor, but a lot of context or explanation you'd get in the documentation ephemera of the past just isn't here. We're sure there will be a lot of resources for players very quickly after the game releases and fans create them! But they weren't there for us in the pre-launch review period.

mossmouth game retro multiplayer
Screenshot by Siliconera

The selection of games feels primarily tuned for a great two-player experience, and it's here that you'll find some more easily explained games. Kick Club is Bubble Bobble with a ball-kicking attack. Bushido Ball is a samurai Windjammers. Fist Hell is River City Ransom with zombies.

Two of our favorites: Hyper Contender and Quibble Race. The first is a TowerFall-style quick battle game, with each character having a movement and attack function, but they can be very different. Is your attack a linear missile or a Castlevania-style axe throw? Do you have a jump, or do you reverse your gravity? The various matchups all play out in different ways.

On the complete opposite end of the action spectrum, Quibble Race is a hidden-information pseudo-horse-racing betting concept. You can sponsor Quibbles for a payout of their winnings! You can scout the participants of a race and make an honest bet! Or, hey, we suppose you can try to poison the favorite? Reading opponents and holding out for some luck makes this a lot more fun than we'd expected.

UFO 50 review Onion Delivery

We've called out a few examples, but we're making a point not to explain absolutely everything, because a lot of the joy of UFO 50 is stumbling upon and exploring a new game. It's best approached as a goodie bag, with discovery and learning through playing as its key tenets. The difficulty is perhaps a bit higher than we'd like in spots for some of the games, but overall it really is a can't-miss release.

UFO 50 launches on PC on September 18, 2024. It's published by Mossmouth, and developed by Derek Yu, Jon Perry, Eirik Suhrke, Paul Hubans, Ojiro Fumoto and Tyriq Plummer.

New Genshin Impact Trailers Focus on Kinich and His Gameplay

Now that the next Genshin Impact Natlan five-star is about to debut, HoYoVerse shared multiple Kinich trailers showing off his personality and how his gameplay works. As a reminder, he's the latest claymore-wielder in the game, and he also uses the Dendro element when he attacks.

The first video is a more stylized take on Kinich. It adds a video game element to things, with pixelated effects and sprites throughout. Once the fight is over, it reveals that K'uhul Ajaw was responsible for it.

While this trailer isn't in English, you can see English subtitles if you turn on closed captions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz0w5JRG3jY&ab_channel=GenshinImpact

The other Kinich Genshin Impact trailer is the typical Collected Miscellany gameplay video. This involves Dainsleif explaining who the character is and how he fights. His Normal Attack involves a three-hit combo. His Elemental Skill involves a grappling hook, and this can be used to attack enemies or to move around the environment if no foes are around. His Burst involves calling upon Ajaw's power to deal AOE damage to enemies. If his Nightsoul's Blessing state is in effect, it changes the properties of and adds additional effects to his Skill and Burst.

Here's that full trailer. Again, English voice-overs aren't available. However, it is possible to turn on English subtitles via the closed captions feature.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rAIyiO_Awus&ab_channel=GenshinImpact

Genshin Impact is available for the PS4, PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the Kinich banner debuts on September 17, 2024. He'll be available until October 8, 2024, alongside a rerun of Raiden Shogun. The Xbox Series X version of the game launches on November 10, 2024.

Nintendo Switch Holiday Bundles Include OLED Mario Kart 8 Deluxe One

Nintendo announced it will offer two Nintendo Switch holiday bundles in 2024, and both of them will include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. One is a standard model, while the other is an OLED one. They will both be available in stores in October 2024.

While the models included in the 2024 Nintendo Switch holiday bundles are similar, the main difference is the price. Both of them net someone a Switch model. That gets you the system with the blue and red Joy-Cons. It also includes the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe download code. You get 12 months of a Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership tier subscription, which means it applies to only your account, so you can play MK8D or other games online. The OLED one gets you one with white Joy-Cons. You also get the download code for the racing game and Nintendo Switch Online subscription. The standard one costs $299.99, and the OLED version is $349.99.

Nintendo shared a brief teaser video that also showed the two different boxes for these two models. The imagery is similar for both.

https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1835664963232248053

The standard version of this bundle should look familiar. It's almost identical to the one released in 2023. The only difference is that last year, only three months of Nintendo Switch Online was included in the package.

The new Nintendo Switch Online holiday bundles with standard and OLED systems and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will launch in the US in October 2024.

Honkai Star Rail Coming to Honkai Impact 3rd in 2024

HoYoVerse announced that there will be elements of Honkai: Star Rail coming to Honkai Impact 3rd. There's no exact release date for the upcoming crossover yet, but we do know that it will appear in the game when the 7.9 update arrives later in 2024.

To help provide some context for those unfamiliar with Honkai Impact 3rd, the latest version update was 7.7. It launched on September 5, 2024. In addition to the new story segments, its major addition was the inclusion of the Theresa Apocalypse Battlesuit. This means we should see it within the next few months.

There are no details about what the crossover will consist of just yet. There's only a vague image showing both games' logos and a teaser trailer with characters like the Trailblazer, Welt, Jing Yuan, Bailu, Kiana, and Senadina.

Here's that logo:

And this is the trailer showing familiar faces:

It's been a while since there was a crossover for Honkai Impact 3rd, and there haven't been any in Honkai: Star Rail just yet. The last Honkai Impact 3rd one involved the Trigger anime movie Promare. Battlesuit costumes and a Stigma inspired by the film appeared.
