Underrated survival game Serum gets better than ever with new update

The thing about desperation is that it drives you to do all sorts of things you wouldn't normally. I'd like to believe that no matter how rough things get, I wouldn't brew up vials of a mysterious Serum to pump into my veins, but as I'm not lost on a terrifying island filled with horrible creatures, I just don't know if I could resist the temptation. This survival game is all about what happens when you decide to take the plunge and stab yourself with power-giving goo, and it just got a whole lot better with a brand new update.

Once upon a time there was a card game called Artifact, created by Steam, Half-Life, and Dota juggernaut Valve.      XDefiant Season 2 adds SnD style Bomb mode and a Far Cry faction

I rather enjoyed XDefiant - Ubisoft's series-hopping, free multiplayer FPS - in the weeks after launch. Featuring characters from Splinter Cell, The Division, Far Cry, Watch Dogs, Ghost Recon, and Rainbow Six, it's proved to be an enjoyable alternative to Call of Duty with a strikingly strong map pool at its disposal.      HTC's new Vive VR headset is a love letter to PC gamers

There's another new VR gaming headset in town, and this one has PC gamers in its mixed-reality sights. The new HTC Vive Focus Vision can function as a decent standalone VR headset, thanks to its Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 chip and 12GB of RAM, but HTC is also making a big effort to appeal to PC gamers who want a high-end headset to tether to their rig.

You might know HTC better as the company that briefly had a big boom in the early days of Android smartphones, with devices such as the Desire and One, but it's been in the VR game for a good few years now, making some of the best VR headset models you can buy. HTC might not have the same big market presence as Meta, but there's some decent hardware inside its new headset.

New Supervive hero makes League of Legends' scariest mechanic scarier

I'm an enchanter support main in League of Legends. I like buffing my ADC's attack damage as Nami, or speeding allies up as Janna; despite the role's squishiness, shielding and healing is where I thrive. But then you put me up against a Blitzcrank, or a Nautilus, and it all falls apart. One perfectly timed hook can yank me under tower, chunking my HP and, oftentimes, killing me entirely. It's an ability I like to use against others, but hate to be on the receiving end of, and having seen Supervive's take on it with new hunter, Kingpin, I'm genuinely terrified.

Fractal's new wood-paneled mini PC case could hold an Nvidia RTX 4090

Battlefield 3 is the greatest online FPS game I have ever played. Yes, I sank hours into the original Modern Warfare 2, and there have been times, over the years, that my performance in Counter-Strike might have been called 'adequate,' but Operation Metro, Seine Crossing, and Damavand Peak will always feel like home, not to mention BF3's criminally underrated campaign. Composed of former Battlefield, Helldivers, and Star Wars Battlefront designers, a new studio has just unveiled its first-ever game, a fresh take on the online FPS that, for now at least, looks like precisely the reinvention that the struggling hero shooter genre badly needs.      How to increase trust in Frostpunk 2

How do you increase your trust in Frostpunk 2? Trust is an important element in politics, relationships, and life in general, but perhaps we don't know the half of it today, you know, in comparison to literally putting your life in the hands of your leader in a frozen wasteland in the 1920s.

In Frostpunk 2, gaining and maintaining the implicit trust of your frostlanders once you've unlocked the Frostpunk 2 Council Hall is essential to continuing your rule and completing the story. More importantly, of course, it's essential to keeping everyone alive and preventing dangerous riots and unruly protests in the city-building game. I then combed through several thousand comments below said video, many of which expressed similar longing for the hypothetical Good Old Days, before those wily feminists invaded the medium, transformed every game into a LGBT+ weeping simulator, and threw all the Real Men into a big hole. I did this because I was searching for one particular comment written by somebody claiming to be Matthew Karch, CEO of Space Marine 2 developers Saber Interactive.

Kingdom Hearts 4 Will Move the Series Towards Its Ending

Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura recently talked to Young Jump about his work on the Kingdom Hearts series. As part of the interview, Nomura said that Kingdom Hearts 4 is being made with the intention of eventually ending the series. [Thanks, Young Jump!]

However, Nomura didn't specify how long it will take for the series to reach its ending after Kingdom Hearts 4. Additionally, Nomura said that, for those who know the ending of Kingdom Hearts 3, the idea was to "reset" the series after that game. Nomura then explained that Kingdom Hearts 4 and the new mobile game Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link are both intended as new beginnings for the series. This was made in order to attract a new audience that might have not been following the series before.

When asking Nomura about the new setting of Quadratum, the developer explained that he intended the modern Shibuya aesthetic to reflect the idea of "unreality within reality." He also shared some insight on one of the starting lines in the original Kingdom Hearts ("is any of this for real or not?") Nomura stating that the idea of "unreality within reality" had been there since the start, and they are slowly moving towards reaching the conclusion to it.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development. There is no information on when the game will release nor which platforms it will appear on.

Usahana, City Town Join Hello Kitty Island Adventure in 2.0 Update

Sanrio and Sunblink recently teased a new Hello Kitty Island Adventure update, and now Usahana and the City Town region are available alongside 2.0. The new region, characters, and activity are live, and a Jam Jamboree event is also temporarily live.

There isn't a full list of 2.0 update additions in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, besides the confirmation of Usahana, City Town, and a custom Imagination Cafe for us to develop, but there are a number of changes tied to the new place. We can find new CDs, and it seems new recipes are also on the way. However, you do need to get access to the boat and repair it, then depart from the Resort Plaza, to reach the new place.

Here's the new trailer. While it starts by showing City Town and Usahana in Hello Kitty Island Adventure, by the 10 second mark we get to see the Imagination Cafe we get to run. The UI there shows we can do things like order ingredients for things and open a cafe. It also seems like it will be possible to upgrade locations there. Sanrio characters we've met will show up as customers there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcieX5QCy9w&ab_channel=Sunblink

There's no video of the new event. The Jam Jamboree takes place on the main island. You play minigames with Cinnamoroll and My Melody to make jam. As usual, a store will appear. Going there with jars lets you get special cosmetics and furniture. That only runs until September 24, 2024.

Hello Kitty Island Adventure is available on Apple devices via Apple Arcade, the 2.0 update is live, and the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC versions launch in 2025.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Free Trial Back Alongside Game Sale

Capcom announced that the Dragon's Dogma 2 free trial is back again on consoles for us to demo, and the action-RPG is on sale on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam as well. The end date for the sales and trial vary depending on the platform you're on.

In the case of the Xbox Series X version of Dragon's Dogma 2, the free trial and sale both end basically the moment October 2024 begins. Both will be available until October 1, 2024. People can access it until 2:59am PT/5:59am ET. It is $41.99 there, rather than $69.99.

The PlayStation Store hasn't updated to reflect the Dragon's Dogma 2 PS5 sale or free trial as of 1:15pm ET on September 18, 2024, though the character creator and storage demo is live. As such, the discounted price isn't live yet. However, it should also be $41.99, compared to $69.99, just like the Xbox version. The demo and sale will run for this console until 11:59pm PT on October 9, 2024/2:59am ET on October 10, 2024.

As a reminder, the Dragon's Dogma 2 free trial is always a limited-time affair, while the character creator and storage demo is always available. Capcom always recommends making your character in that demo first. This is because the free trial is limited to two hours. However, the save file you make in that trial can be used in the full game.

Finally, the Steam sale on the game ends the soonest. You can only pick it up for the PC at a discount until September 29, 2024. It costs $39.89 there.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is available on the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2

The best parts of Space Marine 2 come right before the swarm is upon you. Raining shells down on an undulating tide of teeth and tentacles as it surges over the colossal factories of an equally uncaring and murderous galactic empire, it's these moments that Warhammer is all about. It's just a shame that crashing your own hulking tower of ceramite-coated muscle into the fray is more frustrating than glorious.

But let's back up for a moment, a tactical withdrawal if you will. Way back in distant 2011, Relic Entertainment took a break from making Sci-Fi RTS games to release Space Marine, a action game well regarded for selling the power fantasy of Warhammer's inhuman poster boys. There were wonderously gory executions, a good spread of chunky, impactful weapons and a decent multiplayer mode that let you dress up your space men in your favorite colors. The story was mostly a macguffin hunt, but even that managed a few moments memorable enough to become memes or references still used in the fanbase today.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 combat
Screenshot by Siliconera

Flash forward to 2024 and Saber Interactive's Space Marine 2, which replicates all the original's strengths and weaknesses on an impressive new scale. That same punchy combat returns complete with visceral executions but instead of mobs of Orks you face swarms of the insectoid Tyranids, at least before the forces of Chaos inevitably show up. The roster of weapons has expanded to include things like heavy plasma guns and something like 8 variants of bolter, and instead of a contextless horde mode there are now PvE missions threaded into the narrative (a horde mode is planned for later).

First off, the environments deserve a special mention. It felt like every level in Space Marine 2 I was stopping to gawk at some awe-inspiring sight or another, from haunting war-machines the size of cities towering over a long dead world to the remains of a brutalist factory complex stricken by organic artillery. Meanwhile the skies are literally filled with foes that school like dangerous, airborne fish, enabled by Saber's touted Swarm Engine. And afterwards I would load in to the Battle Barge, the spaceship that serves as your hub area, and pore over the vehicles and armor on display. It's a treat.

But back to the action. Space Marine 2's third-person combat is immediately familiar if you've played the first game: blast chaff enemies apart with the satisfying ka-chunk of your Bolter, then wade into melee with an electric sword, a chainsaw-sword, or just a really big knife. Executing enemies replenishes armor, while dealing damage lets you steal back some of your recently lost health, á la Bloodborne. The stun system is gone, however, replaced with a parry-and-counter button that is at once the most satisfying and infuriating part of combat.

As enemies launch certain attacks, you will see a red marker if you need to dodge or a blue one if you're able to counter. Slam the button at the right time to execute it, with counters slaying smaller enemies outright or stunning larger ones ready for a follow-up pistol shot. I ended up enjoying these far more than the executions, in part due to them just being snappier, but they also felt more rewarding than just beating an enemy until they glowed red. The full executions were satisfying at first, but quickly become tiresome with how many elite enemies you have to deal with, and a ranged execute option would have been nice too. They do at least shield you from damage during the animation, which was a pet peeve Space Marine 2 thankfully doesn't bring back from the first game.

Screenshot by Siliconera

But the real frustration comes from just how fragile you are. Even basic 'gaunts can shred through your ceramite armor like tissue paper if they land a hit, and they aren't all polite enough to broadcast their attacks with colored markers. You can (and in fact, need to,) block and dodge these attacks but it's incredibly hard to do so in a large group or while focusing on a larger foe. Space Marine 2 makes you feel like you should be able to wade into a swarm and keep yourself alive through parries and counters, with the rythmn and heft of the Arkham Batman games, but instead you have to dance around packs of enemies until they're thinned out enough to pick off. It's here the game loses a lot of that super-soldier fantasy it was otherwise doing so well at building.

This parry system does feel like an improvement on the first game's stun mechanic, but it fails to solve the problem the system had where you could be overwhelmed without a satisfying counter-play. It's at this point I began feeling like Space Marine 2 was becoming a bit too faithful of a sequel, as the same issues with combat came back despite the games being over a decade apart. The narrative also fell in to the same trap of revolving around an uninteresting macguffin, despite it feeling most compelling as a more traditional war story. I was more invested in fighting alongside Major Sarkaana and her battallion in the first level, the human soldiers cartoonishly small compared to Titus and pals, than chasing after the nebulous Project Aurora in the final missions.

Warhammer 40k Space Marine 2 Tomb Wall
Screenshot by Siliconera

That's not to say the story was completely flat, there are some juicy hooks floating around. A now-demoted officer returning to his force to find them modernized and re-equipped, put in command of a squad who don't know him and can't be told his history, and a captain having enough trouble facing insurmountable odds without having to take on a troublemaking veteran several times his age and experience. There's potential there and it even simmers well for bit as your companions discuss you, thinking you're out of earshot. But it just doesn't meaningfully pay off.

Then there's the inclusion of the Chaos faction, the traitor space marines of the Thousand Sons. We knew they would be present from the trailers, but that doesn't mean they couldn't let the mystery simmer a bit. And for a while it felt like it was going to, as overheard conversations on the battle barge talk about strange malfunctions and unexplained occurrences. But then you just find a load of magic runes scrawled about a ritual site and the jig is up. From then on they're just another enemy that shows up some times, and while the more ranged focus is a nice reprieve from the 'Nids they don't provide anything especially new, or even narratively justify their presence. I'm not even sure they explain who the Thousand Sons legion are, why their armor is empty, or where the weird goat-demons come from.

Screenshot by Siliconera

A lot of chatter online has been suggesting that Space Marine 2 is only worth it for fans of the franchise, and while there's lots of greebly detail to obsess over I think it's actually the opposite. The game excels at selling the surface details, the heft of your marines and the scale of setting, but falls short of delivering really juicy combat or interesting narrative. There's clearly a lot of intended replayability through PvE and PvP modes the developers have said they intend to build on, but I just don't know if I'm going to be engaged enough by the combat to keep coming back. When it shines, Space Marine 2 can be really good but there's just a few too many irritating flaws to recommend it as much as I want to.

Tetsuya Nomura Is Thinking of Retiring in a Few Years

In a new interview with Young Jump, Kingdom Hearts series creator Tetsuya Nomura talked about the possibility of retiring from making games in a few years. He also discussed how they are having new writers working on that series, as well as the complexity of his stories. [Thanks, Young Jump!]

When asked if he sees the Kingdom Hearts series reaching a conclusion, Tetsuya Nomura joked that, since he only has a few years left before eventually retiring, he has to consider what will come first. This is when he said he has to consider either retiring or finishing the projects he's working on. However, the developer reassured fans by saying that he intends to finish his work on Kingdom Hearts 4.

When talking about Nomura's scenarios and how complex they can be, the developer said that sometimes voice actors will have difficulty following the plot of the games. In these cases, Nomura and other staff members will have to help offering details. However, Nomura himself encourages people to ask him about the scenario when in doubt.

As a new test or experiment for the series, Nomura said that he asked people who have never worked on the Kingdom Hearts series before to participate in the scenario writing for Kingdom Hearts: Missing Link. However, Nomura added that he will ultimately be the one in charge of the script.

Kingdom Hearts 4 is currently in development. The game was announced back in April 2022 and there is now target platforms nor a release window yet.

Amazon Listing for PS5 Pro Pre-orders Goes Live

While Sony said the PS5 Pro pre-orders won't begin until October 10, 2024, Amazon already put up its product listing for the new iteration of the console. At the moment, the page is quite barren and doesn't even note its $699.99 price tag.

Amazon noted that it will open pre-orders for the PS5 Pro at 7am PT/9am CT/10am ET on October 10, 2024. In the meantime, someone can add it to their wishlist. The listing also shows the four official photos of the new version of the console Sony shared with us alongside the announcement.

While pre-orders for the PS5 Pro aren't available at retailers like Amazon just yet, a lot of stores already started showing the $79.99 disc drive peripheral you can use with it. While it is sold out at most places, Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, and Sony's PlayStation Direct storefront all have listings live. So people could pick one up for the new console or standard digital-only system now.

Both the standard slim and digital models of the console are available on the storefront as well. It's currently $499.99 (Amazon) for the slim and $449 (Amazon) for the digital version.

The PlayStation 5 Pro will launch on November 7, 2024, and the standard disc-based PS5 model and digital one are available now.

The Legend of Zelda Echoes of Wisdom goods campaign in Lawson Japan

Nintendo has revealed that it is working with the convenience store chain Lawson to hold The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom goods campaign in Japan. The whole campaign has been ongoing since late August 2024, but a new wave will appear on September 24, 2024.

The new wave will bring a variety of clear files featuring Echoes of Wisdom versions of Zelda, Link, and Ganon. People who purchase three of the specified snack products will be able to get one of the files, and they are also allowed to choose a specific design while supplies last.

In addition, those who have the My Nintendo app installed on their smartphones can use the GPS check-in feature at any Lawson outlet by October 7, 2024, to receive an exclusive Echoes of Wisdom Zelda background image.

September 24, 2024 will also mark the new releases of The Legend of Zelda-themed shoulder bag and golden tumbler by Takarajima. Pre-orders for both items are also available online via the Japanese My Nintendo Store.

These new campaigns will help complement the existing pre-order campaigns for the actual Echoes of Wisdom game, which runs from August 26, 2024, until October 6, 2024. Pre-ordering the physical copy will reward a clear poster with the game's key art, while those who opt for download cards can receive a set of stickers while stocks last. Silent Hill 2 remake advertisement in Shibuya

Konami Digital Entertainment announced that it has placed a physical advertisement booth for its upcoming remake of Silent Hill 2 in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. The company also designed the booth to be regularly updated with a more eerie appearance every night until September 24, 2024.

People can find the advertisement booth near the MAGNET by SHIBUYA109 building. When the company just placed the booth on September 18, 2024, it simply showed James Sunderland walking through clean walls. The daily updates will gradually add rust to the walls, and the climactic update on September 24, 2024, will eventually add a monstrous creature on the other side. The Japanese text that appears in the middle can be translated to "That fear will eat into your world as well."

Even though the Silent Hill 2 remake is also slated to appear worldwide on PCs via Steam, the Japanese advertisement only lists the PS5 as its platform. Several Japanese gaming companies still have a habit of omitting PC platforms in favor of consoles, but some of them are also gradually embracing the PC platform, such as Bandai Namco with its Dragon Ball games on Steam.

This Shibuya advertisement will not be the only booth Konami places to promote the Silent Hill 2 remake. The company will also set up a theater stage themed after the game at its Tokyo Game Show 2024 booth. People who enter the stage and watch the trailer there will receive a set of five stickers featuring James and the hostile creatures.

Konami will release the Silent Hill 2 remake for PlayStation 5 and PC on October 8, 2024. The Silent Hill 2 remake advertisement in Shibuya is available to view until September 30, 2024.

One Piece Live-Action Season 2 Costumes, Sets Shown

Netflix, as part of Geeked Week 2024, shared a One Piece live-action behind-the-scenes video involving Jeff "Buggy the Clown" Ward showing off costumes, props, and sets from season 2. No spoilers appear during the showcase, however. When that sort of footage would appear, it is blurred out in the new trailer.

Things begin with some footage of Ward in costume as Buggy from the first season of the One Piece live-action adaptation before showing what Netflix is doing for season 2. Things begin with Costume Designer Kerry Barnard and Showrunner Matt Owens discussing some of the new outfits. We get to see the storage space where outfits for about 1,000 people are shown. Both ones based on the manga and new ones will appear. This transitions into a brief segment with Hair and Makeup Designer Amanda Ross McDonald to talk about the styles for the series.

After that, it gets into set design for One Piece season 2. There's a tram shown in the props department with Props Master Egbert Kruger, Ward, and Owens. A gigantic syringe, cannon, and Usopp's Sniper Goggles appear. Kruger also noted series creator Eiichiro Oda's art inspired all props and designs.

The video closes out with looks at locations with Production Designer Matt Gottlieb. He shows the exact replica of the Ipponmatsu Arms Shop recreated for season 2 of One Piece, and noted that three shops from the manga were created for the live-action and stocked with appropriate equipment and costumes. Crocus' Twin Cape Lighthouse also showed up.

Here's the full video:

Netflix has shared a lot from the series. For example, we know who Miss Wednesday will be. However, Chopper and Baroque Works' Mr. 0 and Miss All Sunday haven't been revealed yet.

The first season of the One Piece live-action adaptation is on Netflix now, with season 2 on the way. The anime is on both Netflix and Crunchyroll. Viz Media handles the manga outside of Japan.

Koei Classic otome game Angelique appears in Nintendo Switch Online Japan

Nintendo has added new titles to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription lineup, and Angelique is one of them. The first-ever Neoromance otome game produced by Koei Tecmo's Ruby Party team is now available to play to subscribers for the Japanese version of Nintendo Switch Online.

This game places the player as one of the two candidates to become the queen of the universe. It will also encourage the player to seek help from the nine Guardians to speed up the development of the allotted island. However, the player will ultimately have to choose whether to complete the original objective of becoming a queen or pursue a romantic relationship with one of the Guardians.

This release is based on the inaugural Super Famicom (SNES) version that came out in 1994. As such, it does not contain character voiceovers, which Koei only started adding since the 1995 PC-FX port. While Koei Tecmo has since released new series entries based on the game like Angelique Luminarise, the latest direct remake to date is Angelique Retour, which appeared on the PlayStation Portable and Vita in December 2015 in Japan.

Angelique is not the only title added to the Nintendo Switch Online lineup. Nintendo also added two more titles to the collection. They are Cosmo Gang: The Puzzle by Namco (now Bandai Namco) and the Dakar Rally-inspired Big Run: The Supreme 4WD Challenge by Jaleco (now handled by City Connection).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5obF4u-2qc0

Nintendo also added more playable titles to the North American Nintendo Switch Online on the same day. But while Cosmo Gang and Big Run also appeared for North American subscribers, Angelique did not follow suit. The company tried to compensate by replacing it with two other titles: Rare's Battletoads Double Dragon and Technos' Kunio-kun no Dodgeball da yo: Zen'in Shugo!

FFXIV Software Authenticator and Token Emergency Removal Password Detailed

Square Enix issued a reminder about the security measures needed to deal with FFXIV Software Authenticator and Token removal in case someone loses access to their phone or app, which included a walk through the Emergency Removal Password process. As the guides tell us, the process is essentially about being proactive and ensuring you have that extra password saved somewhere in the event you do lose access to devices, so you can then head to a specific site to regain access to your account.

The site people should visit prior to anything going awry is the Square Enix Account page. You can check your Token Usage Status there. On this page you can check your Square Enix ID for FFXIV, see if you have a Security Token registered to a Software Authenticator and device, and find your Emergency Removal Password.

The second part of this process is the actual Software Token Emergency Removal site.  This requires you to know your account ID, the password for it, and the Emergency Removal Password. Filling in that information then sends an email to you that allows you to remove prior tools and the set a new one.

If you do or once did play FFXIV, you probably also received an email about when Square Enix shared an update on the Software Authenticator and Token Emergency Removal Password. Said email featured the subject "[Square Enix Account] Please make a note of your Emergency Removal Password." Like the announcement on the Lodestone site, it went over what it is, shared how to find it, and explained how it helps with access and recovery.

Final Fantasy XIVis available on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Freedom Wars Remastered Arrives in 2025

Bandai Namco announced it is bringing back the Vita game Freedom Wars, this time as Freedom Wars Remastered for the Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. It will arrive over 10 years after the original's anniversary, as the game launches on January 10, 2025.

In the original game, you could play alone or with up to eight people. The main campaign is set in a futuristic, dystopian version of Earth. Due to how society collapsed, the scarcity of resources, and the fact that everyone lives underground in Panopticons, people are deemed criminals for being born or accused of the smallest crimes. Said criminals need to face Abductors to keep them from kidnapping people and fight in wars. In the campaign, you learn about the world's lore and uncover secrets about the world above. In multiplayer, you can work with or against other players.

Bandai Namco also shared what to expect from the remaster of Freedom Wars. As usual, it will look better than the original game. This means it will be up to 4k, provided the platform can support it.
