Dead Island 2 isn't holding back with its punishing New Game Plus mode

Don't get me wrong, there are hundreds more sophisticated and impactful videogames out there, but few games released over the last few years hold a softer spot in my heart than Dead Island 2. Maybe it was the painfully long wait for the sequel to finally emerge, but I think it's one of the best zombie games of recent times thanks to its varied semi-open world areas, in-depth weapon customization, and incredibly detailed gore. Well, it's about to get even better when its imminent Patch 6 arrives, and Dambuster Studio has just revealed what to expect from one of its biggest additions - New Game Plus.

PDP just revealed six beautiful new Tekken 8 Victrix Pro FS Arcade fight sticks, but they're going to cost you quite a pretty penny to own. The good news is that these fight sticks are built to last, and the limited edition designs come numbered out of 300.

Many of the best fight sticks are expensive, as they're a tailor-made bit of kit that only has one purpose. That being said, the $499.99 being asked for these is going to be hard to swallow, even for the most dedicated Tekken 8 player.

Neva review - a poignant platformer that will make you cry

There's a misplaced perception that 'artsy' games are disingenuous: a psychological manipulation of color, sound, and motif engineered to make players feel something. Some are undoubtedly too heavy-handed – their narrative brush strokes too predictable, their allegories too obvious – but even at their best, they demand a degree of emotional work from the player to succeed. Neva is one such experience.

The 16 best games like Minecraft 2024

What are the best games like Minecraft? Way back in 2010, a little game called Minecraft proved to be a revelation in video games, inspiring a whole generation of players and developers in the process. It's a blocky sandbox world that essentially lets us create anything we like and share it with our friends. The cultural phenomenon sold millions of copies, even before Microsoft acquired developer Mojang Studios in 2014.

Since its initial release, there have been a plethora of Minecraft clones. Each does their best to match one of the best PC games of all time, but few have really delivered the whole package like Minecraft does. Sometimes, though, you may only want part of the Minecraft experience, augmented with other aspects that make the Minecraft-like unique - that's where this guide to the best games like Minecraft comes in. All the games on this list are similar to Minecraft in some fashion, be they crafting games, building games, adventure games, or an altogether different part of what makes Minecraft our favorite blocky game.

     All Delta Force operators

Who are the Delta Force operators? The multiplayer experience in Team Jade's reimagining of Delta Force Black Hawk Down takes its cues from extraction shooter mainstays, spliced with the specialist-based class system seen in the likes of Battlefield 2042. As such, you can gain the upper hand on your future opponents just by learning about the specialists in the upcoming shooter.

As of the Delta Force Steam Next Fest demo, there are seven operators. Each operator falls under one of four positions: Assault, Engineer, Recon, or Support. While these positions indicate what each of the FPS game characters excel at, the real meat is in an operator's kit. Alongside a character-specific trait, each operator has unique tactical gear and two gadgets that can be used out in the field. Neva is the Sophomore effort from Nomada Studio, who you may remember from their beautiful, dreamy platformer Gris. Neva is not a literal sequel to Gris, but it certainly seems to be one in a spiritual sense, as it, too, is a floaty hand-illustrated platformer fond of metaphor. Neva introduces some drama, with combat and a health system (if not actual stakes because of near-instant restarts), and although neither the platforming nor combat are precise enough to be neat bedfellows, I think we should be willing to forgive most of the mess.

Both part of Italy's "not very big" developer community, Morbidware's Diego Sacchetti and Misbug have known each other for a long time, but hadn't had the chance to collaborate together until 2019's The Textorcist: The Story of Ray Bibbia - a bullet hell where you dodge projectiles and type in exorcisms to banish demons. They worked well together, so started looking for their next project - something full-time that could take the place of the increasing instability of freelancing.

It was a shared passion away from videogames that ended up moulding the shape that project would take. "We love tabletop RPGs," says designer and programmer Sacchetti. "So when we stumbled into Mörk Borg, and then we started to play, we looked at each other in the eyes and said, 'Why don't we make a game out of it?'"

It feels like RPG Maker WITH isn't as open and welcoming as it could be on the Switch, even though it is a fine and capable tool.

It's difficult to access an RPG Maker game! It sort of feels like you can't completely do so until you potentially make a few games that are multiple hours. Your affection (or dislike) for it only grows the more time you spend with it. Like I only knew how much I adored RPG Maker FES after I got halfway through a Neoromance-like original game I'd made. So while I spent about five hours working on a project on my Switch already, I still feel like I'm only scratching the surface with RPG Maker WITH. However, while it does feel like it could lead to interesting creations, I also feel like it isn't exactly what I wanted from a new entry.

In games like RPG Maker WITH, you're presented with the map making, asset designing, and editing tools necessary to create RPGs (or other types of games). So it ends up being a whole process, due to creating all maps for the world, towns, dungeons, and villages, developing the people and monsters who inhabit them with provided assets, crafting a story, working on balancing, and generally preparing everything. As with all other entries in the series, you start out with everything you need. There are pre-made sprites for it all. You select what you need and place it where it works best for you. You essentially lay everything out as needed. The interface allows you to quickly go through different areas.

The thing that struck me as I dabbled with it on the Switch is that there are basically two groups RPG Maker WITH is geared toward. One seems like it would be people who are completely new to the RPG Maker experience. This is because of the heavy reliance on included sample data and asset sharing. A big selling point of this installment is being able to work with other people on the same game. However, given the nature of these titles and this being a Switch-exclusive for the moment, I'm not entirely sure how well adopted it will be. So you might not find those other people assisting.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IdzQoPqvVIc&ab_channel=NISAmerica

But also, since RPG Maker WITH doesn't offer any tutorials or insights, it is far from being an ideal introduction. Even the official website for the game isn't much help, as the section directing you to guides sends you to an outside website instead of any official videos made by Gotcha Gotcha Games or NIS America. I'm incredibly familiar with the series and spent hours with RPG Maker FES, but found each editor has its nuances and works differently. So it even took me about an hour or two of experimentation to start working things out.

Which makes it feel like RPG Maker WITH is really for the other potential audience. That is, folks already experienced with the tool. While those of us used to things will easily jump into building up characters, designing maps, and organizing enemy encounters, there are parts that still feel like they place us in the weeds. A walkthrough for the Event Editor would have been absolutely appreciated. Even though it is mostly a common sense sort of feature and those familiar with past games will probably pick it up quickly, I found it a little intimidating to be faced with learning the new scripting feature again.

As such, it feels like RPG Maker WITH isn't as open and welcoming as it could be on the Switch, even though it is a fine and capable tool. Especially given the idea and concept of this being a more inclusive experience that encourages people to work together and there are so many sharing elements. You'd think the options for newcomers would be at least offer the option of a tutorial to walk you through at the very least the event editor portion. As for more advanced and experienced creators, I'm sure we'll start to see some fun things show up over the next few months or even years. But then, since it is limited to the console, I do wonder and hope that its the case and people won't just pick up RPG Maker MV or MZ for the PC instead.

RPG Maker WITH is available on the Nintendo Switch. It will come to the PS4 and PS5 in 2025.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince Is a Captivating Mobile RPG

I suppose I've gotten accustomed to playing Square Enix JRPGs on my mobile devices, so when it comes to a game like Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, it didn't initially hit me how impressive it was to actually be going through it on an iPad. However, the more time I've spent with this latest entry in the series, I've come to appreciate just how much fun it is to play on a tablet, as well as how well it works as an experience on the platform due to its nature.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is, like all entries in this spin-off series, an installment focused on monster catching and taming. Different enough from Pokemon to stand out, it can feel like you're working alongside the creatures, rather than raising them like battle-thirsty pets. It's also an interesting supplemental story that builds on everything we know about Psaro and Dragon Quest IV, offering new insights and motivations for someone we've come to see as potentially a sympathetic antagonist over the years. So right from the start, there's a strong foundation.

The first thing that impressed me is how Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince looks on an iPad, as it is one of the promising Square Enix mobile JRPGs. I know textures could sometimes be an issue in the PC version, but the game handles well on even my five-year-old device. It's reassuring! It's even able to keep up when there are a lot of monsters on-screen. Of course, the general Dragon Quest art direction is a big help here, as is the general design direction and seasonal endeavors that ensure everything is very vibrant.

But what really left me feeling satisfied is how well-suited the gameplay loop and nature of Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is for a mobile experience. While its battles and concept plays differently than Pokemon, it still has that captivating creature capturing mechanic that is great at garnering attention. It's so easy to focus on finding new monsters for the squad, building them up, and moving forward because of the strengths they bring. But then also, I have a habit of just enjoying collecting characters I like in these types of titles. Since I have a fondness for Slimes, it's 100% slime time when going through the game. Like I still desperately want and need a Goonache Goodie, and I'm amazed by how cute ones like the Scallop Slime and Onion Slime are.

It isn't a totally perfect mobile experience. I missed the ability to play with a controller, though the touchscreen controls are perfectly adept and capable in Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. I also did notice some frame rate hiccups when certain attacks were used in battles or a lot of characters were on-screen. Again, something that is expected with the mobile version of a mobile Square Enix title or really any JRPG of this sort running on a tablet. I tend to always play offline and solo for these sorts of games, so the lack of Online Battles wasn't an issue for me. It could be for some, however.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is the sort of mobile RPG I find I keep coming back to. I'll play for 15 to 30 minutes. Get a taste of adventure and creature capturing. I appreciate the designs of characters I like, and probably get excited about which ones I recently found. Then, I go ahead and go back to picking away at something else. It's a handy type of title to have on the go.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince is available on the Nintendo Switch, PC, and mobile devices.

Elise is the third Venus Vacation Prism Dead or Alive Xtreme DOAX character

Koei Tecmo has revealed Elise as the third of six heroines who will appear in Venus Vacation Prism - Dead or Alive Xtreme. Asami Seto will also return from the original Venus Vacation to provide Japanese voiceovers for the character.

Elise is one of the Venus Vacation original characters who debuted in the free-to-play game. She appeared first in the Japanese release in July 2021, and she also later joined the Asian English version's roster.

Koei Tecmo describes Elise as a former owner of another facility who comes for the player as a Life Coach. Her favorite color, food, and drink is Snow White, Stollen bread, and Jelly drink, respectively.

The trailer showing how Elise will look like in Venus Vacation Prism is available to view on the game's official X account:

Venus Vacation Prism - Dead or Alive Xtreme will appear on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam and DMM Games in Japan and Asia in early 2025.
