Ambitious new city builder Thrive Heavy Lies the Crown locks in launch date

One thing that's been wonderful to see happen more and more recently has been games taking inspiration from more than one source. While Thrive Heavy Lies the Crown could be seen as solely a Manor Lords rival, there's much more going on. It's got Frostpunk 2-esque decision making, RTS combat straight out of titles like Age of Empires 4, and the fantasy feel of Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It's something that's a true blend, and it even has a multiplayer element. If that sounds like it's your bag of bricks, you'll be able to get your hands on it soon as its early access release date has been announced.

One of Destiny 2's biggest myths appears to have been busted

It's been a bit of a tin foil hat week in the Destiny 2 community as theories and fan-compiled data have suggested that Bungie is intentionally making some weapon perk rolls rarer than they should be. With evidence piling extremely high, Bungie has now addressed the perk-weighting accusations, saying that while it is not purposefully altering any perk drop rates, it is now "investigating a potential issue" that may be causing the discrepancies.

Steam Deck OS on the Asus ROG Ally looking ever more likely thanks to new update

There's a new Steam Deck SteamOS release available to download, and among the numerous bug fixes and other tweaks included in the update, there are also some exciting hints at what could be in the future for SteamOS. That's because there's a mention in the release notes of the latest version of added support for "extra ROG Ally keys" and "Asus ROG Raikiri Pro controller."

While this is hardly smoking gun levels of evidence, it adds to previous rumors we've seen where updates have included mentions of SteamOS support for consoles other than the Steam Deck. With the use of this custom Linux OS being one of the key reasons why the Steam Deck OLED retains its place as the best handheld gaming PC, its availability on other devices could put a whole new spin on the gaming handheld landscape.

Crow Country Entrance

2024 has been a decent year for indie horror games. From abandoned theme parks full of monsters to Eldritch beings at sea, there has been something for everyone's tastes. So if you're looking for a smaller horror game to sink your teeth into this Halloween, these six games have you covered.

Image via Headware Games

Hollowbody

While the Silent Hill 2 remake has proven to be remarkably successful at capturing the feeling of the PS2 original, for those looking for a more accurate gameplay experience it may be a letdown. This is where Hollowbody comes in, which sticks more closely to the fixed camera angles and awkward combat of PS2-era survival horror.

Set in a dilapidated Britain in a vaguely cyberpunk near-future, you play as a black-market smuggler whose partner has disappeared into an exclusion zone. You'll be exploring the ruins of an abandoned town, complete with monsters around every corner. However, there's a creeping dread that even beyond the beasts, this is not a pleasant place to be. Hollowbody does have some noticeable flaws, but it's one of the best indie horror games to recreate that early 2000s feel.

Hollowbody is available for PC.

Image via Team17

Conscript

War is a common setting for video games. Whether it's dense strategy games recreating historical battles or gung-ho shooters about fighting for freedom, it's been heavily covered. Where war doesn't feature that often is horror, which is a surprise when the setting is so ripe for it. War is a miserable, terrifying experience for those who fight in it, after all.

This is where Conscript comes in. It uses the damp, rat-infested trenches of World War I as its setting and it's incredibly effective. The tight spaces and poor lighting make it hard to see threats around each corner, while damaged supply lines force item management to the forefront. It's very Resident Evil in its structure, but the horrors here are much more human. By marrying the mechanics of horror games to the harsh realities of combat, Conscript is an effective reminder that war is hell.

Conscript is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Image via Ironwood Studios

Pacific Drive

While not strictly a horror game in many people's definitions, Pacific Drive meets the criteria of being one of the best indie horror games of 2024 in many ways. Supernatural threats you're mostly powerless against? Check. A tense, foreboding atmosphere that persists everywhere you explore? Check. Jump scares? If mannequins appearing ominously behind you without you noticing count, then absolutely check.

Pacific Drive sends you out into an exclusion zone in America's spookiest region (the Pacific Northwest) where science has unleashed horrors upon the landscape. Also your only protection is a beaten-up 1970s station wagon. Half survival roguelike, half car maintenance simulator, Pacific Drive manages to evoke horror through the random nature of its anomalous threats and with a landscape that becomes increasingly alien as you progress through the game.

Pacific Drive is available for PC and PS5.

Image via The Chinese Room

Still Wakes the Deep

Isolated locations are the perfect locations for horror, and where is more isolated than an oil rig in the middle of the ocean? Still Wakes the Deep sees you playing as a rig worker as the crew drills into something terrible in the ocean that should have been left alone. The game that follows is a desperate rush to escape from this unknowable horror while trapped by your surroundings.

Developed by The Chinese Room, Still Wakes the Deep evokes the same horror as their previous work Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Plenty of tense atmosphere, a monster that could be anywhere as it cracks and breaks the rig around itself, and a cast of excellent voice actors that sell the terror make the game one of the best indie horror games of 2024.

Still Wakes the Deep is available for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Image via Wrong Organ

Mouthwashing

Mouthwashing is a game that seemingly came out of nowhere this year, and quickly shot right to the top of many players' lists. The premise is that a spaceship crew is stranded following a crash that may have been caused by the captain. As the game progresses, the truth is revealed through a series of surreal flashbacks told out of order, revealing a rapid decline in sanity across the whole crew.

Mouthwashing uses low poly aesthetics to great effect, crafting a cast of characters who are generally unpleasant to look at and an environment that's oppressive even before things begin to collapse. It's a game that's left a huge impression on its players, one that's unlikely to be shaken any time soon.

Mouthwashing is available for PC.

Image via SFB Games

Crow Country

The low-poly PS1 aesthetic works wonders for horror. The shifting textures, static faces and awkward shapes and movements add an uncanny pleasantness that can be put to great work when it comes to making people uneasy. Crow Country embraces the PS1 horror aesthetic to its fullest, in a way you'd likely not expect from the developers of Snipperclips.

You play as Mara Forest, a special agent investigating Crow Country, an abandoned theme park, whose owner has disappeared. The game is a classic survival horror game, with limited resources, obtuse puzzles and an array of creepy monsters wandering around. However, while the gameplay evokes Resident Evil and Silent Hill, the visuals owe a greater debt to Final Fantasy VII, right down to the chibi character models.

Crow Country is a fantastic horror game all round. The story is a true mystery, full of twists and turns. The gameplay is full of inventive puzzles. And the theme park is dripping with atmosphere, with the feeling that more horrors are lurking around the corners you can't see. It's an essential game for any horror fan, and easily one of the best indie horrors of 2024.

Crow Country is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.

Let us know what your favorite indie horror game of 2024 is in the comments below!

Mechagodzilla Kiryu in Evangelion 01 colors

Plex has revealed a new figure of the Type-3 Kiryu Mechagodzilla adorned with the Evangelion Unit-01 colors. The company has also opened pre-orders for the figure on the Japanese Premium Bandai web store. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]

The figure's official name will be "Toei Great Kaiju Series - Type-3 Kiryu (2002) Heavy Armament Type, EVA Unit-01 Color." It will be available with a price tag of 30,800 yen (~$203). The figure will have an overall height of around 29 cm (11.42 in) and a length of 36 cm (14.17 in).

Plex did not mention whether the figure would have any movable parts. Instead, it confirmed a focus on the lighting gimmicks. The figure's package will come with a power supply unit to light up the yellow eyes. In addition, the owner will be able to use a blacklight/ultraviolet flashlight to make the green parts glow with fluorescent effects in the dark.

Here are some of the sample images showing the figure from various angles, along with its dimensions and lighting gimmicks:

Plex has also confirmed that this new figure will be part of the Godzilla VS Evangelion crossover project. Earlier in May 2024, Bandai revealed an Evangelion Unit-01 Burning G Awakening Form figure, which shows Shinji's unit getting fused with the Godzilla.

The Toei Kaiju figure of the 2002 Type-3 Kiryu with Heavy Armaments and Evangelion Unit-01 colors will be available in February 2025.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Freebies Shared After 10 Million Downloads

Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, the mobile game featuring storylines from FFVII Compendium of titles, reached 10 million downloads. As a result, it's started giving away various freebies for players and running tie-in promotions, with everyone guaranteed 3,000 Blue Crystals.

First, getting the 3,000 free Blue Crystals in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is easy and doesn't require massive investment in any of the FFVII chapters. Just log into the game. It'll be able to be claimed and applied to things like the gacha. There is also a login campaign that involves Lottery Boxes as well.

There are also celebratory elements that involve spending either in-game currency or real cash. One is the 10 Million DL Celebration Draw for weapons. You can only perform one 10-pull on that banner. However, every one of the items you get will be a five-star piece of equipment. That will be around until November 4, 2024. The in-game shop is also selling three 10 Million DL Packs for real money. For example, the ones mentioned include the Legendary 10 Million DL Pack 1 with a guaranteed draw ticket for a five-star Barret gun, a 10 Million DL Pack IV that gives you 10 Mythril Ingots, and a 10 Million DL Pack IV option with a Barret five-star guaranteed draw ticket, a Red XIII five-star guaranteed draw ticket, 100 weapon parts for a Barret weapon, and 100 weapon parts for a Red XIII weapon.

This comes after a major update to The First Soldier storyline in the game. The second episode for it is now live, which means Angeal is a playable character. This isn't the same version of the character from Crisis Core FFVII though, as it is based on him when he's a newcomer to Shinra.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for PCs and mobile devices, and the freebies to honor it hitting 10 million downloads are live now.

The Quintessential Quintuplets movie crossover content in Monster Strike

Mixi published details about the new Monster Strike crossover content that is inspired by The Quintessential Quintuplets movie. Players will be able to recruit characters from the latter title—including the titular quintuplets—for a limited time from late October 2024 until early November 2024.

The Nakano quintuplets will be the main highlights of this crossover. Mixi will hold a gacha banner that includes each of the five characters separately. It will also have a one-time free gacha banner where players are guaranteed to get one of the quintuplets at random.

In addition, Mixi will hold a special quest that rewards Futaro Coins when played in Multiplayer mode. Players will be able to use these coins to obtain Futaro and Raiha as a single fire-elemental character unit.

The mobile puzzle game Monster Strike is still running strong in Japan even after more than 11 years have passed since its initial launch in September 2013. Mixi has also added numerous crossover content from many external franchises, including Spy X Family and Mobile Suit Gundam.

Monster Strike is readily available for Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan. The new crossover content from The Quintessential Quintuplets movie crossover content will be available in Monster Strike from October 26, 2024, until November 5, 2024.

Patch 7.1 FFXIV Site Teases New Additions, Shares Screenshots

Square Enix opened up a new FFXIV site, and it goes over new additions and screenshots for patch 7.1. As it is still about a month away from its debut, some information is still left vague. It also still only mentions a mid-November 2024 release window.

In addition to the 11 screenshots, there are four elements of the update specifically highlighted on the FFXIV site. The first is the "Crossroads" Main Scenario Questline. It takes place after the events of Dawntrail, as you may imagine. Spoilers aside, it will deal with Living Memory. The FFXI Alliance Raid Dungeon, Yuweyawata Field Station Field Station Dungeon, and The Minstrel's Ballad: Sphene's Burden Trial are also highlighted. In each case, the screenshots are shared. We see Prishe in the Alliance Raid section, for example. The Yuweyawata Field Station teases some of the new attire we can earn. Sphene's Burden is the most secretive of the three sections.

The official site for FFXIV 7.1 shared the following general overview of everything in the update. Note that some

  • Main Scenario Quests - Crossroad
  • New Alliance Raid - Echoes of Vana'diel - Jeuno: The First Walk
  • New Dungeon - Yuweyawata Field Station
  • New Trial - The Minstrel's Ballad: Sphene's Burden
  • New Ultimate Raid - Futures Rewritten (Ultimate)
  • Chaotic Alliance Raid - Cloud of Darkness (Chaotic)
  • New Unreal Trial - The Jade Stoa (Unreal)
  • Allied Society Quests - Pelupelu
  • Inconceivably Further Hildibrand Adventures
  • Custom Deliveries - Nitowikwe
  • Role Quests
  • Wachumeqimeqi Quests
  • Hall of the Novice Update
  • Housing Update
  • Doman Mahjong Update
  • New PvP Gear
  • New Mounts, Minions, and Emotes

Here are all the latest FFXIV screenshots from Square Enix showing off patch 7.1. Note that they may contain some spoilers for the update.

We'll know more about the new additions soon. The Letter from the Producer Live 84 airs next week. Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida and Global Community Producer Toshio Murouchi will discuss more details about the update at 4am PT/7am ET/1pm CET on November 1, 2024. That's also when we'll likely find out its release date.

Final Fantasy XIV is available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. The next update arrives in mid-November 2024.
