So, erm, where the heck is Ark 2?

From Once Human, to Palworld, to Enshrouded, it's been a pretty awesome year for new survival games. While existing juggernauts of the genre also remain popular, the class of 2024 is a strong one but there seems to be one student that's flunking. Still technically billed to be launching by the end of this year, Ark 2 is not just a sequel to one of the biggest survival games around, but a transformational sequel at that - so where the heck is it?

Puzzle game sequel Unrailed 2 might be your next favorite co-op experience

There are plenty of train games in existence on PC, with many either aiming for realistic recreations of driving trains like Train Simulator or Train Sim World, and others looking to a more top-down view like Transport Tycoon, Sweet Transit, or Railroad Corporation 2. Then there are games like puzzle sequel Unrailed 2 Back on Track, which is all about laying rails but in the most chaotic way possible. It's out now in Steam Early Access, and it's off to a strong start.

Empire of the Ants is like Command and Conquer with bugs, and it's out now

After being dazzled by its trailers over the last few months, the time has finally arrived for Empire of the Ants to scuttle onto Steam. It's one of the most intriguing strategy titles I've seen in a long time, and it's gone pretty viral in the build up to launch thanks to its photorealistic visuals. However, on the day of its full release, it doesn't seem like it's setting the world alight.

Generation Zero dev says co-op FPS' next update will be its last

At a time where many new, high-profile multiplayer games have struggled to find their feet, it's refreshing to remind yourself of some of the quieter, underrated games that have weathered the live service storms and survived thanks to a modest but dedicated community. Step up Generation Zero, an underappreciated co-op survival shooter that released just before the turn of the decade and has been supported with updates, DLCs and expansions for around six years now. Well, all good things must come to an end, and developer Systemic Reaction has just confirmed that support for Generation Zero is wrapping up after one final, generously-sized update.

Screenshot of Mass Effect, Shepherd stares at a Reaper taking off.

Amazon announced that a Mass Effect TV show is officially in development. While little is known about the nature of the project, Variety reported that the key figures involved in the production are Daniel Casey, Ari Arad, Karim Zreik, and EA's Michael Gamble. [Thanks, Variety!]

Daniel Casey, who is the lead writer and an executive producer on the Mass Effect TV show, is best known for his work on F9: the Fast Saga and the sci-fi film Kin. Baldur's Gate 3's Astarion thinking

Larian Studios revealed all the upcoming additions we'll see in the PS5 Pro version of Baldur's Gate 3. There are multiple major upgrades, as well as one major fix to improve performance.

Primarily, the improvements involve its visual. On the PS5 Pro, the Baldur's Gate 3 Quality mode means the game will display at native 4K resolution while maintaining 30 FPS during gameplay. If someone chooses Performance mode, it will run at 60 FPS while upscaling from 1440p to 2160p using the PSSR technology.

Notably, a fix for the multiplayer mode will also be deployed in this patch. Split screen gameplay in Baldur's Gate 3 maintaining 30 FPS on Quality mode and 60 FPS on Performance mode.

The other update involves the PC version. A fix will be deployed for mods in-game. It remedies an issue that meant you couldn't download or subscribe to mods when joining another player's multiplayer session with mods enabled.

This is one of many Baldur's Gate 3 updates with substantial content additions for Larian Studios' latest adventure. In September, 2024, a massive update for the game released. It added new ending cinematics, mature content toggles, and an in-game mod manager.

Baldur's Gate 3 is available now on the Xbox Series X, PS5, and PC, and there are PS5 Pro features.

miyamoto shigeru nintendo game design

On November 6, 2024, the official Nintendo website published its online investors meeting Q&A and during that time, Shigeru Miyamoto—game director at Nintendo and creator of franchises like Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin—gave a short speech about his philosophy on game design. He also provides some insight on how the company trains its new recruits. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Miyamoto brings up his idea of game design at Nintendo after an investor asked about the speech that Miyamoto gives new employees every year. This information comes from articles about the Nintendo Museum. The investor also asks how Miyamoto succeeds at making creative games, stating that from an outsider's perspective, it feels like Miyamoto can do so because he's a genius. In response to that, Miyamoto notes that many new employees go up to him after he gives his speech to say that he's actually a very normal person, which he agrees with. It's less about genius and more about mindset.

He first states that he always thinks about how he can make a game a "hit" success and how he can efficiently perform his duties at work. While a lot of new employees want to make a more intricate or elaborate version of a game they'd enjoyed in the past, Miyamoto states that's not the right mindset to have. Instead, you should look around you and consider what would make for a fun video game. That's the core of game design. Then, you can start considering what's even possible. For example, what processing power will your game need and what hardware will it be on? Afterwards, you can start the trial and error process of development.

According to Miyamoto, many new employees comment that this method of game design isn't what they imagined, and they find it quite interesting. Others can empathize with this view of creativity. Part of the orientation involves looking at Nintendo's history of creating real-life game items like hanafuda and mahjong tiles. So this history of making physical games might have affected how Miyamoto and Nintendo look at digital products.

You can read the whole Q&A here.

sanrio gacha toys plush

Takara Tomy will release miniature figures of Sanrio characters hugging an even smaller plush of themselves, and you'll be available as gacha prizes. You'll be able to start pulling for them in mid-November 2024. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]

As a note, it costs 300 JPY per attempt. That would convert to approximately $2. In total, there are four variations: My Melody, Pochacco, Hangyodon, and Pompompurin. All of them are holding plushie versions of themselves, except for Pompompurin. Instead of holding the smaller version of Pompompurin, he has him on his stomach as he's lying on his back.

All of the figures stand at approximately 30 to 50 millimeters, but you can see that Takara Tomy put quite a bit of work into the designs. Since Sanrio characters look quite simple, it's not too difficult to have an accurate depiction of them. But in the case of these figures in particular, you can tell that they're holding plush versions of themselves due to how the dolls look like they're covered in fur. Some of them even have visible stitches to make it more obvious.

This is not the first time that Takara Tomy released Sanrio toys exclusive to gacha machines. In March 2024, it released a line of mascots that look like sushi, for example. This line featured Hello Kitty, Pochacco, My Melody, Cinnamoroll, and Keroppi.

The Takara Tomy Sanrio figures showing them holding plush versions of themselves will come out in mid-November 2024 in Japan via gacha machines.

pokemon kogei

A Pokemon x Kogei art exhibition will take place in Japan from April 26 to June 15, 2026. You'll be able to purchase tickets in January 2025.

The full name of the exhibition is "Pokemon x Kogei: Playful Encounters of Pokemon and Japanese Craft," according to the show's English website. Kogei is the Japanese word for craft, and the exhibition will show off the work of twenty different craft artists. Among them include Living National Treasures, which is the informal term for individuals who receive subsidies from the Japanese government to perform and make art.

This is not the first time that the exhibition appeared. Multiple Japanese museums and exhibition halls have hosted this event, and it was even in the Japan House Los Angeles in the United States. There are additional art pieces to look at, so even if you already visited before, you might see something new.

The website for the exhibition features some examples of works you might see. Kasumi Ueba created a Shaymin piece using stone, with a fern arabesque pattern all over its body. Meanwhile, Eiichi Shiroma created a silken kimono pattern displaying Alolan Pokemon (and Pikachu). You can check out other pieces via the site if you're interested.

The Pokemon Kogei art exhibition will run from April 26 to June 15, 2026 at the Matsuzakaya Art Gallery in Aichi.

evangelion look up figures asuka rei

The Evangelion Asuka and Rei Look Up figures are available once again via Megahobby. They do not come as a set, so if you want both, you'll need to purchase them separately.

Each Evangelion Look Up figure costs 4620 JPY (including tax), which would convert to approximately $30.20. They'll ship out in late May 2025. Megahobby originally released these figures in December 2023, and they shipped out in June 2024 of this year. If you prefer the Evangelion boys, Megahobby also released Look Up figures of Shinji and Kaworu. These are not available right now via Megahobby though, so if you want them, you'll need to purchase them secondhand or from another store.

Look Up figures are small palm-sized figures from Megahobby showing the character in question looking upwards. They usually have a chibi design, which makes them quite cute. While you can display them at home like a normal figure, their small size and particular pose means that you can also bring them outside and pose them next to something for photos. Some of the pictures on Megahobby's site has the Look Up figures sitting next to food and drinks.

The Evangelion Asuka and Rei Look Up figures are re-running for a limited time and they'll come out in late May 2025.
