12 years after launch, this GTA style crime game just got a surprise update

Whenever I see that an old game has received a surprise update out of the blue, it immediately gets my attention. Is it preparing for some kind of revival or unexpected new content? Did a huge bug get uncovered after all these years? Is it preparing to be in a huge sale or bundle? Whatever the reason ends up being, it's hard not to pique my interest when this situation arises - a situation that GTA-style crime game Retro City Rampage DX just found itself in.

Valve just released a new version of Half-Life 2, and it's free right now

Given that it was such a genre-defining game, Valve had been surprisingly hushed this week despite it being the 20th anniversary of Half-Life 2. Consider that silence well and truly broken now, as it has just dropped a two-hour long documentary about the game's development, released a new update for the game to enhance it even further, and essentially created an entirely new version of Half-Life 2 that is totally free to add to your library - if you're fast.

Square Enix Will Focus on the Airship for FFVII Remake Part 3

As part of a panel at the Korean G-STAR 2024 gaming conference, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Producer Yoshinori Kitase and Director Naoki Hamaguchi talked about how the airship will be an important part of FFVII Remake Part 3. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The panel was titled "The challenges of Creating a Timeless Game and Its Remake Project." Due to the high anticipation for the final part of the FFVII Remake trilogy, the developers couldn't say much.

However, Hamaguchi said that, while FFVII Rebirth offered a large map, when thinking about the original Final Fantasy VII then part 3 of the new remake trilogy will bring the Highwind airship into play. Because of the introduction of the airship, the director said that the world needs to be experienced from a higher perspective.

Additionally, Hamaguchi concluded the presentation with the following statement:

We will not cheat with the airship system (in FFVII Remake Part 3,) but take the challenge head-on so that it can freely fly all over the game map.

Back in April 2024, the FFVII Rebirth Ultimania released and it included some words from Tetsuya Nomura that revealed that the story for Part 3 of is already done.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is readily available on the PlayStation 5. The exclusivity arrangement expired on May 29, 2024, so the game may appear in other platforms in the future like Windows PC.

As part of the Microsoft Store digital Black Friday 2024 sale, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and Mana series Xbox games are reduced.

Square Enix Announced it is part of the Microsoft Black Friday sale for Xbox consoles, and all of the Xbox Series X Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games are part of it. The company also confirmed the latest Mana series game, Visions of Mana, and past entries are also reduced as part of the event.

This is basically a 25% off discount across the board on the applicable Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster and Visions of Mana games available during the Xbox Black Friday Sale. All of the discounts are available now, and they will remain in effect until December 2, 2024. None of the titles are on sale digitally on other platforms.

Here's the full list of games reduced for Black Friday, as well as links to the Microsoft Store pages for them.

As a note, Legend of Mana and Trials of Mana are currently on Xbox Game Pass.

The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster games are a relatively new addition to the Xbox Series X library. They only joined the roster back in September 2024. They were among Square Enix's TGS 2024 announcements.

There will also be other ways to play games in those collections. The Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster+ is heading to Apple Arcade. Square Enix also started selling physical copies of them outside Japan again.

Square Enix's discounts on digital Xbox games during the Microsoft Store Black Friday sale runs until December 2, 2024.

See Final Fantasy Trading Card Game Hidden Legends Full Art Cards

The Final Fantasy Trading Card Game Hidden Legends expansion is live, with booster packs shipping on November 15, 2024, and Square Enix shared how its full art cards look. There are 29 in this set, with some by artists like Gen Kobayashi and Ryoma Ito.

Both mainline and spin-off games are represented in this set. For example, some of the full art titles include characters from FFII, FFVI, Crisis Core FFVII, FFIX, FFX, FFXII, Lightning Returns FFXIII, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin. As is usual, not every Final Fantasy game is represented in the collection, as each expansion tends to only include a handful of series.

Here's how those Final Fantasy Trading Card Game Hidden Legends full art cards look:

Note that while these are the full art versions, there will be standard versions of these cards in the set too. Those will feature traditional formats. Square Enix shared examples of the Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Neon card to show how the two versions differ.

This is the second recent booster pack expansion to show up for the game in 2024. Hidden Hope launched in August 2024.

The Final Fantasy Trading Card Game and its Hidden Legends expansion are available as of November 15, 2024.

Most people may associate VR games with active titles, but Triangle Strategy on the Meta Quest offers a welcome sort of solace.

I love the Meta Quest 3, but sometimes I wish that there were more games from genres I turn to most often on my consoles or PC there. Of course, when you have a VR headset, titles that take advantage of those features and the ability to use your body as a controller will take precedence. But it's nice when there are other options. Square Enix taking a chance and releasing a VR version of Triangle Strategy is exactly what I wanted, as the mixed reality Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro game takes advantage of the headset while delivering a more traditional tactical experience

To start, Triangle Strategy looks like a combination of the recent HD-2D games like Octopath Traveler and traditional strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics, and that is preserved in this Meta Quest VR adaptation. In fact, I'd even say the HD-2D element is even easier to appreciate, given the 3D perspective of the VR headset. You can really see how the character sprites stand out among the backgrounds, and rotating the field allows you to take in the effort put into environments and maps. It also looks as strong as it did in its Switch release, so we're getting a chance to appreciate the art and design. The story segments are only in 2D and presented as though we're watching a movie, compared to fights taking place in a three dimensional space on a table.

Which is another way in which Triangle Strategy feels a little extra special on the Meta Quest 3. Or at least, it did to me. The nature of it made me feel like I was an actual tactician. The optional mixed reality approach makes it work as Lego Bricktalesdoes. The table is in front of you. You can turn it around and look down on it from different angles. When you're moving your characters around and attacking, it feels like positioning pieces on a game board or map. It's a small touch that made it all feel a little more immersive.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1U33aFQeec

Of course, I'm also a big fan in general of how some MR games are handled on the Meta Quest 3. While I do appreciate the more active titles in my collection, especially ones that give me a workout like Beat Saber, I like these types of titles for downtime. Like if I need to charge the headset, but still want to play a thing. I've found Triangle Strategy is good for those moments. I plug it in. I sit near the outlet. Maybe I put a show or music on in the background for white noise. Then, I play through a few maps.

Nothing too distracting, of course, because Triangle Strategy remains a fascinating game with an engaging, political tale to tell. Serenoa Wolffort ends up caught up in political machinations as Gustadolph Aesfrost begins a campaign to take over the Kingdom of Glenbrook. As the campaign continues, you'll be able to decide what Serenoa's goals will be, leading to building up an army with different allies and reaching different endings.

I know most people might associate VR games with active ones that have you exercising or moving in time with your characters' actions, but Triangle Strategy on the Meta Quest is a welcome sort of solace. You can sit back and relax a bit, playing through a challenging and satisfying strategy game from a new perspective. The approach is handled well, and I really loved how much I felt like an actual tactician at a table, planning for an approaching battle, as I played.

Triangle Strategy is available in VR on the Meta Quest 2, 3, and Pro. The original version of the game can be found on the Nintendo Switch and PC.

Here's How a Priest Ended up Singing Songs for Metaphor: ReFantazio

In a recent Famitsu interview, Metaphor: ReFantazio Composer Shoji Meguro talked about having an active Buddhist priest sing some of the songs for the game. Chief Priest of Myojoji Temple Keisuke Honryo provided the sutra-like vocals for the battle music found in the game and certain moments. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Honryo appeared as a special guest during the "Road to Metaphor" event prior to the release of the game to perform the main battle theme. Composer Shoji Meguro revealed that, in addition to being a Buddhist priest, Honyo is also a member of the experimental jazz ensemble Nam Jazz Experiment. He performs the sutra vocals for the band.

Meguro said that he approached Honryo after seeing one of the videos where the priest performed with the band. At first, Meguro shared a link of his singing with developers at Atlus, but the team concluded that the best thing to do would be to ask Chief Priest Honryo himself if he could perform some songs for the soundtrack of Metaphor: ReFantazio.

The vocals that Honryo performs are a mix of Esperanto and the language of the world of Metaphor: ReFantazio. Meguro added that he asked Honryo to perform the lyrics of the songs out loud in a rap-like tempo for the recordings. Meguro also prepared a placeholder version of the songs using a synthesizer that could imitate singing prior to recording.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is readily available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC. A demo of the game is also available.
