Now's the time to play Warhammer Vermintide 2, as PvP helps player counts soar

There are plenty of videogames that test you and your friends against the unending hordes. Deep Rock Galactic, Left 4 Dead, and Killing Floor all pit you against a seemingly insurmountable opponent, as waves of creatures scramble over each other to tear you limb from limb. Few do it like developer Fatshark, though, and the team has covered both sides of the Warhammer coin with 40k Darktide and Vermintide 2. Whether you've got a hankering for grimdark sci-fi or gory fantasy, then, Fatshark has your back. I'd recommend Warhammer Vermintide 2 right now, because not only is it dirt cheap but it's also just had a huge update, and the Steam player count is the highest it's been in years.

14 years in the making, Stalker 2's ambitions go way beyond

Sticking the landing with a sequel is tricky, doubly so for a game as long in the making and with such a nightmarish development as Stalker 2. GSC Game World's survival FPS will arrive 15 years after 2009's Call of Pripyat, a game that still haunts my dreams. The sequel was announced in 2010, canceled in 2012, and resurrected in its current form in 2018. Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to further delays as GSC faced the most challenging circumstances any creatives could likely imagine. Now, with launch mere days away, the developer has had years to reflect on the original trilogy, but lead producer Slava Lukyanenka stresses that Stalker 2 is its own beast.

New Fallout 4 mod brings over the best New Vegas feature

Every Fallout game is different. While they might look and play similar, each leverages a range of ideas and mechanics to create vastly unique experiences. Fallout 3 has an incredible sense of exploration as soon as you step outside Vault 101, New Vegas has thought-provoking and tough decisions to make around every corner, and Fallout 4 has stellar gunplay. No two games in the series are the same, and this is what makes choosing the best one nigh impossible. Mods, on the other hand, often mean we don't even need to choose. That's why this brand new FO4 mod is on my radar, because it straight up just brings over one of the best New Vegas features to The Commonwealth.

Treyarch is bringing Black Ops 6's removed XP tokens back after player backlash

Treyarch is bringing the legacy XP tokens it removed back to Black Ops 6 after widespread player backlash. The developer swiftly added, and then removed, XP tokens from previous Call of Duty games with the start of BO6 Season 1 earlier this week, and almost all of the community was up in arms over the experience rewards being taken away. Treyarch has also clarified that the legacy XP tokens initially came from a glitch, and explained why they had to be removed from Black Ops 6. While you wait to get all your legacy XP tokens back, then, Treyarch has confirmed that there's a way around the problem.

I will spend this Sunday nursing a chest infection, probably by wrapping blankets around myself and watching YouTube videos until sleep comes. Let's first round up some good links with writing and videos about videogames.

This is surely the best link this week: an hour-long video on how to beat "every possible game of Pokemon Platinum at the same time". That is, coming up with a set of game inputs that can win billions of possible permutations of the game, as determined by its RNG, when played simultaneously. It's an impressive feat, but the video itself is great too, patiently breaking down the process with motion graphics and video editing flair. Delightful.

okayu nyumu korone inugami

Inugami Korone will be appearing in Okayu Nyumu, a game that Nekomata Okayu of hololive stars in and oversaw. This is a romantic visual novel game that'll come out on February 27, 2025 for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC.

The story takes place in a world where Okayu is an actual character rather than someone's VTuber persona. You play as someone who feeds a stray cat one day and then wakes up the next morning to see a girl with cat ears in your futon. This girl is Nekomata Okayu, who ends up living with the protagonist. As they grow closer, things take a turn for the romantic.

Korone appears in Okayu Nyumu as a mysterious girl who claims that she used to live with Okayu. Earning her trust is key to uncovering who Okayu really is, which is a key mystery in the game's story. The line next to her profile on the game's website is "I won't let you have Okayu!" which shows that Korone in this universe has a very possessive streak. In real life, the personalities behind Okayu and Korone are very close, and the game seems to recreate their deep friendship. It's unknown if other VTubers Okayu's friends with will appear in Okayu Nyumu.

Okayu Nyumu will come out on February 27, 2025 for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC. There is no information on an English release as of yet.

I Love How the Elden Ring Manga Handles Rennala

Throughout the Elden Ring: The Rad to the Erdtree gag manga, we see Nikiichi Tobita's original take on the adventure and characters, and a good part of volume 4 involves Aseo's interactions with Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. As expected, she isn't exactly as we might remember from the game. However, much of this storyline pulls directly from what we know about her and plays with those expectations, while acknowledging her role in the title.

Editor's Note: There will be spoilers for Rennala both in the Elden Ring manga and game below.

Before we properly meet Rennala in the Elden Ring manga, we first see Aseo reunite with Ranni the Witch in the Raya Lucaria Academy. After some refreshers Ranni and Rennala's backstory, as well as her attempting to make him a Carian Knight again, she tasks him with meeting with her mother in the Grand Library and stealing her Great Rune for her own safety. She also mentions that she chose Aseo for this, since she knows he wouldn't actually kill her mother.

From there, we actually get to see Aseo meet Rennala in the Elden Ring manga, and the interactions do not disappoint. It begins by fully embracing her motherhood and interactions with the Great Rune sealed in an Amber Egg. She's not malevolent at all. She's just… an overworked mother pulled in too many directions by her Sweetings children. So much so that she needs to perform her Comet Azur to get the kids to stop playing with the books.

Initially, she seems to dismiss Aseo, but once he reveals who he is, she and Carian Knight Moongrum actually take him as a threat. So much so that Moongrum steps up as the "boss" fight for the situation. He maintains his role as the Grand Library guardian, just as in the game. Except like the Godrick fight, it doesn't go as expected. The Sweetings are still an issue, acting as a distraction and making it seem like she might be performing Twirling Retreat to again distract them.

But I especially respect how the Elden Ring manga makes things more real at the end of the encounter with Rennala. Spoilers aside, Moongrum returns after his defeat to explain what she uses the Great Rune for. It's a tragic moment and I feel an opportunity to sympathize with someone who previously seemed over-the-top and a major threat. To think even a gag manga would go out of its way to make readers understand someone better is quite a feat.

Which means I also especially loved is how Aseo eventually decides to deal with Rennala and the task Ranni assigned him in the Elden Ring manga. After consulting with Melina and Moongrum, this retelling decides to seemingly handle the encounter like we could in the game. As a refresher, this is an optional fight. So, we get to see how that would work in Aseo's story as well. It allows us to see a more considerate side of things and appreciate the lore we picked up based on insights about Rennala here.

The depiction of Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon in the Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree manga pulls from the game in so many good ways. It plays with what we know about her lore. It brings in her "Sweetings." Her attacks are referenced. So is her very nature as a boss in the game. It's all cleverly executed, as is much of this gag manga.

Volume 4 of Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree is available now, and Yen Press will release volume 5 on January 21, 2025.
