The PlayStation 5 has entered the latter stage of its lifecycle, Sony announced back in February. The fourth anniversary of the console has been marked by impressive victories and surprising setbacks. 2024 felt like an inflection point for the PS5, with Sony unofficially turning the page on the PS4 and paving the way…

     Delta Force's campaign

Delta Force has already established itself as yet another popular free-to-play game on Steam, but next month it releases its paid campaign, Black Hawk Down. Taking inspiration from the iconic movie and the 2003 Delta Force game, it transports players out of its near future battles and drops them into 1990s Somalia. It's an interesting move, and one that may feel at odds with its multiplayer focus, but game design director Ricky Liao says that immersion and creating an authentic reimagining of Black Hawk Down is incredibly important to Team Jade.

Mixing Doom, Resident Evil, and Mirror's Edge, this is the year's scariest game

Lorn's Lure, a first-person indie platformer released this year from Rubeki Games, is downright terrifying. The terror isn't in its science fiction plot, which follows an android who leaves the safety of his home colony to chase down a mysterious floating light, taking him deep into the astonishing depths of an unknown superstructure. Over the course of eight levels the android makes his way through cavernous spaces, down city-sized canals, into dark caves and among the ruins of ancient, long-dead civilizations. The impressive topography and impossible scale of Lorn's Lure inspires awe. It is in traversing these spaces, in carefully flinging your intrepid artificial body across its antagonistic architecture, that you will feel the terror.

My selection box isn't really a selection box. It's a tray of barely-nibbled leftovers, hastily lifted from my Steam backlog. One of the disadvantages of being news editor, you see, is that I have developed a goldfish-grade attention span. In my hectic pursuit of the next scoop, or the next Elden Ring update changelog, I snatch and cast aside game demos like a pickpocket speedrunning the checkout line at Harvey Nichols. I'm dimly aware that some of these cast-aside games are Very Good. A few might even deserve to be played for longer than 30 minutes. I feel immensely guilty about that. Perhaps a little... existential, too. I have measured out my life in tutorial levels.

So! Rather than digging out three of the games I've actually completed this year, such as The Crush House, Death Of A Wish and Mask Quest, I'm going to gamble on recommending a few I've barely scratched, but which sure feel excellent and have attracted a positive critical consensus. If I am false in this assessment, may Horace the Endless Bear bite my head off for my impudence. Let's begin.

siliconera playstation game of the year 2024

It's that time again! Over the next few days, Siliconera is celebrating the best of 2024, with platform awards each day until the overall winner next week. Read on for our PlayStation Game of the Year selections!

These awards represent the consensus of the Siliconera staff. Multiplatform games are considered on the platform for which they received the most staff support. For more of the year's award selections, check out our Game of the Year 2024 archive.

Astro Bot

While Sony's dismantling of its Japanese studios has been heartbreaking, its last group standing put in the work and showed just how good games could be. But hey, we're not kidding ourselves; we're probably just getting this game and not a full rebuild of what was. Still, what a game it is! The best platformer without Mario in the title (and better than a lot of them with it), Astro Bot takes the warm fuzzies of nostalgia and surrounds them with well-crafted levels and super-polished mechanics. The little bot's previous adventures have been wonderful, too! But this is the first one without any need for asterisks: a great, full game for everyone.

Metaphor: ReFantazio

The combat and characters of Metaphor paper over the game's many rough narrative elements, building a high fantasy take on Persona that holds up well to lofty expectations. (And the soundtrack is of course stellar.) It's familiar enough to make long-time Atlus-heads happy, while sporting a fresh enough setting to add variety to the studio's catalog. (Check out Stephanie's review for a deeper dive into Metaphor.)

siliconera playstation game of the year 2024 winner final fantasy vii rebirth

Winner: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

While we briefly considered giving the award directly to in-world card game Queen's Blood, the whole of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is worthy of our PlayStation Game of the Year 2024 honor. This excellent return to the world of Square Enix's most famous game is filled with love and care, meeting (and subverting) the expectations of longtime fans. (But yeah, also, you should definitely check out Queen's Blood.)
