Best Yakuza and Like a Dragon Character

The Like a Dragon (or as it was formerly known, Yakuza) series is roughly two decades old, spanning a total of nine mainline entries and several spin-offs. As the series has gained popularity internationally, players worldwide have had a chance to experience some of the most interesting characters the games have to offer. Below, we've provided a list of who we feel is the best character in the Like a Dragon (Yakuza) series!

Oh, it absolutely has to be Goro Majima. He's just such a hilarious figure, and it's amazing the range he has. The Mad Dog can be incredibly serious at times, but then we also have him popping out of garbage cans to ambush Kiryu-chan. I also will never forget his Yakuza: Dead Souls "Get to the Top" performance. — Jenni

The most obvious choice here is Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima. After all, there wouldn't be a Yakuza series without these two. However, despite playing the Yakuza franchise for over a decade now, I am going to pick Ichiban Kasuga from Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth. When Like a Dragon was first announced, I was extremely skeptical about the series taking on a new protagonist. Plus Ichiban just looked goofy in that run-down suit that looked like it had been a holdover from the 80s.

What I didn't expect from Yakuza: Like a Dragon was to cry. But when I reached the final moments of that game, I bawled my eyes out. Not only was it one of the most emotional stories I've ever experienced in gaming, but the developers made me truly care about Ichiban. What can I say, as a protagonist he's just so damn likable. He wears his heart on his sleeve, and he has this aura that makes everyone want to be better - including those playing the game. And in a world that has become cruel and cynical, I find Ichiban Kasuga to be a shining light in the darkness. Okay, that might be a bit dramatic, but I genuinely think he's not only one of the best characters in Yakuza but possibly one of the best gaming characters to be created in the last twenty years. — Brent

There are so many amazing characters in the Yakuza and Like a Dragon games that it's really hard to choose the best! So I'm going to be a bit controversial here and pick a personal favorite: Tanimura. Now, I mean specifically the original version of Tanimura because I got into the series through his actor, Hiroki Narimiya. As a character, too, I thought his arc in Yakuza 4 was the best, even if it may feel closer to something from Judgment than Yakuza.

His battle style was so fun once you unlocked more Heat Actions, too! It's a shame that Tanimura will probably never return to the series, even with a new face and voice actor, because they wrapped up his whole deal so neatly in his game. On the flip side, though, he can't overstay his welcome or be shoved into another installment. — Stephanie

Despite my plethora of Yakuza merchandise featuring series protagonist Kiryu, exclusives from the SEGA Store in Japan included, my favorite character in the series is Yoshitaka Mine. Perhaps one of the most devoted and loyal characters in the franchise, he is honestly one of the best foils and mirrors of Kiryu, which makes him one of the best antagonists of the series.

Yeah, Majima is great, and Ryuji Goda from Yakuza 2 is immediately memorable due to his imposing figure and absolutely stellar design. But Mine was striking in everything he did, taking everything to an extreme that often crossed the line in a way that was truly shocking for the series at the time. (Also, you gotta love a man who loves another man so intensely that he'd do anything to keep him safe.) — Kazuma

Goro Majima used to be my favorite from Yakuza 0 through 3 (and he's still incredible), but I've recently come to love two other characters a bit more: Shun Akiyama and Kasuga Ichiban. Akiyama is such a likable guy, and I adored his character arc and weird romance in Yakuza 4 and 5. And then there's Ichiban. This guy turned me into a passionate fan of the series Yakuza: Like a Dragon with his lovable and charming personality and goofy moments. I haven't seen a video game protagonist carry their entire story better than him. — Cody

Volume 2 of the Tokyo Babylon Manga Tactfully Handles Violence Against Women

The first volume of the Tokyo Babylon manga involved CLAMP setting the stage with shorter stories involving Subaru and Hokuto Sumeragi and Seishiro Sakurazuka. However, it's in the second installment of Yen Press' CLAMP Premium Collection edition that even more serious situations are addressed when each of the twins deals with their own, sometimes longer than usual, tales of how they deal with violence against women.

Editor's Note: There are no spoilers for the events of the two stories in Tokyo Babylon volume 2, but it does discuss some of the nature of the violent acts against two women in the manga.

The bulk of the volume involves a case on Subaru's docket in a chapter called "Dream." A young woman was sexually assaulted by a group of young men. We see her deal with the trauma and after effects of the incident in the opening manga, then watch as she falls into an endless sleep. After four months, the Sumeragi family — meaning Subaru — is tasked with investigating the incident. Once in the hospital, he begins his analysis and ends up reaching out by heading into her dreams.

I immediately felt for Mitsuki. The fact that this happened to her, she's dealing with it on her own, these men are still lurking around her home, and she's too afraid to come forward because she's hearing about the "rumors" going around about the attack is horrifying. She's completely alone and going through something unimaginable.

Enter Subaru. While Mitsuki doesn't explicitly give consent to him to enter, a certain supernatural situation leading up to it — which Seishiro rightfully identifies as being connected — and the fact that she is about to die if he doesn't take such drastic makes the situation understandable. Seeing the continuing pain she's going through, and the way the story plays out, hits so hard even after all these years since its original publication. And I appreciate that CLAMP's execution at the end of this first story in volume 2 of the Tokyo Babylon manga offers a glimmer of hope.

Meanwhile, "Smile" is a shorter story that deals with another kind of violence against women that also gives us our first chance to see Hokuto on her own without being a supporting character pushing Subaru. She's out one evening having fun, gets hit on by some guys, and sees another woman being harassed and grabbed by other men. She immediately jumps in to assist the stranger, helping her get away.

What works so well about this story, so much so that I even would say it is the stronger of the two in this volume, is because we're seeing three types of strength from Hokuto. There's her physical strength, absolutely. She isn't afraid to fight back against a group of strange men to help someone innocent and in danger. There's her mental strength. While we're constantly seeing Subaru's onmyoji abilities, this chapter allows us to see her cast a spell to protect her and her newfound friend.

But most importantly is her emotional strength. After the woman explains her situation, both in coming to this country and the reason for the actions against her, Hokuto is open, welcoming, and genuinely cares for her. She stands by her side and offers her friendship, wanting to be close, help her, and maybe even be that lifeline this woman needs. And, once again, we get this sense of hope on CLAMP's part.

Covering violence against women in stories is difficult, and CLAMP didn't shy away from addressing the sorts of things that happen in the Tokyo Babylon manga. I feel that in doing so, it's encouraging people to talk about it, not look away when they see it happen, and encourage them to speak up and follow the examples of the Sumeragi twins to offer help and support when they can.

Volume 2 of CLAMP Premium Collection Tokyo Babylon is available now, and volume 3 of the manga will be out on May 21, 2024.

Persona 3 Theodore and Persona 5 Morgana Beanies Are Surprisingly Practical

Perhaps it's because I grew up during a time before higher-end fan merchandise and companies like Loungefly capitalizing on fandom, but I sometimes end up surprised when I'm using something tied to a series and it's genuinely good and useful. The official Atlus Persona 3 Portable Theodore and Persona 5 Morgana beanies both fall into that sort of category, as each one is well made and definitely references the games well, but they're also great go-to hats.

Both of the hats are one-size fits most items, and they're both made of acrylic. The Morgana one has a little more "to" it, due to the embroidered facial features and multiple colors stitched together. However, both are basically durable, warm beanies designed to throw on before you leave the house. The colors are right, the designs are accurate, and they're everything you'd expect from Atlus merchandise.

What I like most about these two options is how they cater to different sorts of needs. The Persona 3 Portable Theodore beanie is a more subtle way to show affinity for the series. People unfamiliar with the series and character might think it is just a blue hat with a patch. Even people who know the series might not recognize the patch, since the emblem on the character's hat in his in-game portrait is so small.

Meanwhile, the Morgana Persona 5 beanie has more personality to it. It's immediately recognizable as the mascot from the game. Given the popularity of that particular installment, people who haven't even played but consider gaming a hobby will know it's from some title, even if they can't pick out the exact one. It's definitely a way of making a statement while staying warm or accessorizing.

Speaking of warmth, the recent weather in Illinois during this month meant I got quite a bit of practical use out of both hats while running errands or shoveling snow from the driveways of some family members. The only "downside" to the two hats is that the Morgana beanie is much warmer than the Theodore one. This means if you're picking one out to get or wear for practical purposes, you have to go with the more obvious reference. However, I will say that the Morgana one held up very well in extreme conditions (there were single digit temperatures that felt like below-zero ones here), and it also maintained its same level of quality after a washing. All of the pictures here on the "models" were taken after it'd gone through the wash twice.

Generally speaking, both the Persona 3 Portable Theodore and Persona 5 Morgana beanies are pretty good hats. They might be more expensive than you may pay for such things, but the nods to the series will probably more than make it worth it for some people. I would say the Theodore one is better as a general-use item. The Morgana one is great for a fun, silly look, but it is so insulated and warm that I'd recommend using it during actual winter months.

The Persona 3 Portable Theodore and Persona 5 Morgana beanies are available at Shop Atlus for $29.99 and $27.99, respectively. Persona 3 Portable is available on the PS4, PS5, PSP, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC. Persona 5 is on the PS3 and PS4, while its Royal version is on the PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
