Legendary strategy game remaster gets huge new expansion

Last year saw the release of Stronghold: Definitive Edition, a massive update to the 2001 classic that came out during a golden age of strategy games, like Shogun: Total War, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, and Age of Mythology. While it was welcome enough to see Stronghold treated to massive improvements in audiovisual fidelity and additions to the base game, its creators at Firefly Studios have continued to work on Stronghold by bringing the huge new Swine's Bay Campaign expansion to the game today.

Baldur's Gate 3 Patch 6 needs 150 GB, but fixes companions

Baldur's Gate 3 was one of the best games to come out last year, but it didn't launch without its fair share of technical issues. Its creator, Larian Studios, has been hard at work in the months since to iron out these bugs and add in new features, providing the same level of ongoing support that it brought to its past work, like the Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, and Fallout inspired Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel.

True to form, the newest update to Baldur's Gate 3, Patch 6, promises further improvements when it releases this week - but it will also require a pretty substantial 150 GB of hard drive space to get installed.

Jurassic Park Survival release date estimate and latest news

What is the Jurassic Park Survival release date? This is the latest game taking on the Jurassic Park series, first announced at The Game Awards 2023. Jurassic Park Survival is an action-adventure game, leaning away from the previous Jurassic World Evolution sim management games, and it looks like instead of saving and protecting dinosaurs, we'll be trying to survive them.

The upcoming action-adventure game takes inspiration from Capcom's Dino Crisis to create an intense survival experience where anything can and probably will try to kill you. Jurassic Park Survival takes place immediately after the events of the original Jurassic Park story. As Dr. Maya Joshi, an InGen scientist who could not evacuate Isla Nublar when the dinosaurs broke out of their enclosures, it's up to you to find your way out of the park and evacuate from the island. Plenty will wonder if the dinosaur game will meet our wild collective expectations for a game like this. So when is the Jurassic Park Survival release date?

Banishers Ghosts of New Eden map size, locations, and regions

How big is the Banishers Ghosts of New Eden map? The Banishers map is split into five distinct regions, but where most open-world games make it possible to explore in any direction, this is a little more complicated. You can backtrack and fast travel, but the world is mostly interconnected narrow paths rather than being truly open.

Saying the Banishers Ghosts of New Eden map is a specific measurement is rather redundant because the terrain in the RPG game is filled with unreachable cliffs and lakes. Instead, we can take a look at all the regions in order of when you'll explore them and the major landmarks within each one. Make sure you're also clued-up on how long Banishers Ghosts of New Eden is as combined with the full map, that will give you a strong idea of what to expect.

Helldivers 2 is a third-person co-op shooter that's centred as much around action as it is comedy. Gigantic insects and red-eyed robots threaten the sanctity of Super Earth and, frankly, this isn't on. As a Helldiver, you must team up with your compatriots and pulverise these menaces for freedom (a shoulder-mounted laser cannon) and democracy (an aerial bombardment). Seriousness is reserved for the act of extermination, which adds tactility to the familiar motions of a shooter, making for horde management that promotes efficiency and frequent lapses of judgement in equal measure. Helldivers 2 is a slapstick masterpiece.

Unicorn Overlord Gameplay Trailer Goes Over Class Promotions and Training

Atlus shared yet another Unicorn Overlord gameplay trailer, with the focus this time being on features that help make characters stronger like training and class promotions. It spends three minutes going over how players can strengthen their army outside of battle.

As usual, this clip is framed as the player's avatar Prince Alain being trained by the Holy Knight Josef. Things begin by looking at the different classes each character in the army belongs to. It then notes how adapting the army to each situation will help with winning. As you earn honors as you play through quests, you can spend them to promote a unit. The example in the Unicorn Overlord video shows the Swordfighter Giselbert becoming a Swordmaster after the player uses 30 honors to change their class.

There will also be supplemental battles for players called Auxiliary Stages. These are Sigils of the Ancients fights that offer opportunities to fight. The example shown in the video was The Sigil's Trial, Beginner 1 and involved Knight and Soldier enemy classes. These offer opportunities to earn experience and can be repeated. The video also showed a reward from the fight could be a Treatise, like a Novice Military Treatise item that gives a minimum 50 EXP to a unit when used.

We've been seeing quite a few of these informational videos going over Unicorn Overlord gameplay ahead of launch. For example, one of the latest ones focused on how relationships that develop between characters as you fight or have your avatar make decisions would influence in-battle elements. Another showed what it was like to explore the game's world and liberate towns or forts.

Unicorn Overlord will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X on March 8, 2024.

Foamstars Team

Foamstars is the latest live service game hoping to gain huge success off the back of being one of the monthly free PlayStation Plus games. It's a bold strategy, but is Foamstars more Fall Guys or do we have another Destruction AllStars on our hands?

Foamstars is a squad-based multiplayer shooter. However, unlike other games in the genre, this game is built around a party atmosphere. It's set in the vibrant city of Bath Vegas, where two teams of four battle it out in a chaotic soapy mess. You see, in this town, the battles are fought with bubble guns that shoot thick bubbly foam that glues itself to the scenery.

The main gameplay mechanic here is using your foam guns to cover your opponents in suds before surfing up to them and kicking them out of the arena. The game's main mode, Smash the Star, requires players to get seven KOs (or "chills" as they're inexplicably called here) which makes the rival team's best player the final target. This Star Player gets boosted significantly to protect them, but as soon as they're taken down, you win.

Screenshot by Siliconera

It's a concept that sounds complicated but is utterly compelling once you get into it. Foamstars feels good to play, in a way that's hard to tell from just looking at it. Admittedly it's even a bit messy when you first start out. Once you get your hands on it though, it's hard to put down. When I first played it out of curiosity, I found myself still there hours later, lying to myself that the next match would definitely be the last one.

What's impressive about Foamstars is how differently each of its different cast members plays. Soa is a quick and speedy character, built around an evasive dodge move that allows her to leap out of trouble. Masked germophobe Rave Breaker is a trickster, throwing out traps and sneaking up on his foes. Jet Justice is all about massive damage in a wide space. I quickly found my mains. As someone who enjoys evasive play, hanging back and being slippery, Soa's dodge move, Penny's range and Tonix's push-back style all sat well with me.

The foam is also used in some smart ways. You can surf on your colored foam for quick movement around the stage. It can also be piled up, allowing you to create walls and elevated platforms to give you an advantage in battle. Every shot you take has the potential to shape the terrain to your advantage, which is a brilliant mechanic.

Screenshot by Siliconera

There's also a minor story mode to play with here, and there's a lot to like in this too. Each character gets three missions, largely designed to get you grasping each character's individual move sets. Along the way, you get stories that give you an insight into the characters. We get backstory, banter and side characters, all designed to immerse you in the world.

However, this mode does have problems, and it's where the cracks in Foamstars begin to appear. With only three missions per character, it's limited. The writing is also bland at times, and the central story is often absent in favor of unrelated conversations about ice cream. I found this lack of personality distracting and my mind would often wander to a different game.

Screenshot by Siliconera

It's about time I addressed the giant squid in the room. Despite the tutorial's insistence that Foamstars "isn't like other games", the Splatoon comparisons have been inevitable since the game's reveal. It's a cartoony 4v4 shooter where you cover the ground in the liquid of your team's color, complete with fashion and timed party events. It's easy to see the similarities.

To be fair, Foamstars does a decent amount of work to differentiate itself from Nintendo's franchise. Smash the Star does not remotely play like Turf War. It's much closer to a traditional deathmatch, with a unique twist of its own. It feels more aggressive than Splatoon, with players intentionally targeting each other instead of the floor. The ability to stack the foam also gives it an extra dimension over its inspiration.

Screenshot by Siliconera

However, Foamstars still often feels like a game desperately following in Splatoon's footsteps and failing to catch up. Let's talk aesthetics. Splatoon's inspirations in Japanese street fashion give the series a feeling of youthful expression, creativity and playfulness. Meanwhile, Foamstars draws inspiration from the glitz and glamor of Las Vegas. However, much like the real Vegas, the gaudy neon and gold trim is mostly masking something hollow and tacky.

Foamstars looks fine. The character designs are nice enough, and there's a sheen to the main lobby area. However, it all feels designed by corporate committee, like a Square Enix executive saw Fortnite and Overwatch and demanded the same. While I enjoy how most of the cast feel to play, I do not care for most of them as actual characters because their personalities are so flat across the board. Ironically, I care more about my Inkling despite them being a blank slate player avatar, and I can't help but wonder if that would have been a better option here too.

This hollow feeling is exemplified in the game's noted use of generative AI imagery, as the album covers in the game's music list all bear the bland, soulless hallmarks of typical Midjourney slop. There's no consistent art direction, just a series of generic images that inspire nothing. Compare this to Splatoon, where Nintendo not only created unique album artwork but also wrote extensive lore around the fictional bands who made the songs.

Screenshot by Siliconera

Customisation is also a massive problem. Much like its Las Vegas inspiration, Foamstars is very interested in draining your wallet. Practically every cosmetic option is locked behind microtransactions. Buy a season pass! Buy extra costume packs! Don't forget these time-limited offers! Unlike Splatoon where a few hours of play unlock a bunch of clothing options, Foamstars locks you out of expressing yourself with a persistent paywall.

It's a real shame that the flaws with Foamstars are so prominent because that gameplay loop is extremely good. It's a great game to jump into in between other games and there are genuine moments of elation when you get that final slidekick in to win a match. It's a game I would love to recommend on this alone, but it's difficult.

Aside from its flaws, it's been released in an environment where live service games are tanking in an oversaturated market and where the game's own publisher has built a reputation for rapidly closing down its games. As much as I'm enjoying myself, it's impossible to shake the feeling it won't last long.

Foamstars is a mixed bag of a game. The gameplay is fun, elevating itself above the inevitable Splatoon comparisons and doing something interesting with the concept. But the bland aesthetics and aggressive monetization are huge turn-offs that prevent this from fully reaching its potential.

Foamstars is out now for PS5 and PS4 via PlayStation Plus.

Honkai Impact 3rd AstralOp Dreamseeker Introduced

One of the new mechanics in Honkai Impact 3rd Part 2 will be the Astral Ring system, with AstralOp System characters like the Dreamseeker able to assist such characters. HoYoVerse offered an update on who this character is and how they will work.

There are both male and female versions of the Dreamseeker avatar in Honkai Impact 3rd, just like Caelus and Stelle in Honkai: Impact 3rd. This character is from Oxia and explores alongside the other new characters at the Sea of Data. We've caught a glimpse of the female version of Dreamseeker before. In the HoYoVerse for the 7.3 Battlesuit Deepspace Anchor: First Light, the story segment at the introduction showed Senadina interacting with her. After acquiring them from reaching level 30, you can change their name and appearance at Antares Building. Someone will also be able to use them when there.

As for how Dreamseeker works, they will appear if an Astral Ring Battlesuit is the team's leader. When the Stellar Outburst state isn't active, the team DMG will increase and attacks boost Astral Ring Intensity to eventually trigger Stellar Outburst. When a player makes a Stellar Outburst happen, the Dreamseeker AstralOp will appear to do things like deal additional lightning damage to enemies.

There are three confirmed Battlesuits that will have the Astral Ring capability and AstralOp System in Honkai Impact 3rd when Part 2 launches. In addition to Senadina's Deepspace Anchor: First LIght, Coralie's Valkyrie Blastmetal and Helia's Valkyrie Boltstorm will too. All people who play will get Coralie for free. There will also be one additional AstralOp known as Songque.

Honkai Impact 3rd is available for the PC and mobile devices, and the Part 2 version 7.3 release date is February 29, 2024.

How to beat Ethereal Hand Persona 3 Reload

Ethereal Hand is one of the many rare golden shadows players can find in Tartarus in Persona 3 Reload. This particular one is somewhat easier to take out than others if players plan ahead before they find it. Here's what you need to know about the Ethereal Hand weakness and how to beat it.

How to beat Ethereal Hand Persona 3 Reload
Screenshot by Siliconera

Persona 3 Reload Ethereal Hand Weaknesses and Moves

You can find the Ethereal Hand through sheer luck or by using a fortune on floors 144-171 of Tartarus in the Tziah block. It has a single weakness available for it, which makes defeating this particular rare shadow a bit easier to defeat than some of the others. That weakness is none other than electric.

You don't have to worry about any particular attacks from this Ethereal Hand, other than how it will run away quite quickly if given the chance. Fortunately, making use of its weakness to Zio skills should make this fight much easier and less stressful.

How to beat Ethereal Hand Persona 3 Reload

Best Personas and Party Members for Fighting Ethereal Hand in Persona 3 Reload

Since Ethereal Hand is weak to Zio, this makes creating your party pretty simple in Persona 3 Reload. You want Akihiko on your team no matter what with his use of Zio attacks. In addition, you want to focus on Personas that have Zio, such as Omoikane, Loa, Mothman, and the like. The more powerful the variant of Zio it is, the better with how finicky these fights can be.

The goal is to use Zio on Ethereal Hand as soon as you can to knock it down and get that all-important All-Out Attack. In addition, you can use Theurgy to speed up the fight for those party members who don't have access to electric skills. If you are fast enough and take advantage of its weakness, you should be able to beat it before it runs.

Persona 3 Reload is available right now for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC Gameplay Finally Revealed in New Trailer

We've known the Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC is on the way for a while, but Nintendo didn't share how the gameplay will exactly work for it. Now a new trailer goes over every element of this mode with roguelike elements.

When Side Order begins, the player's avatar will head to the Spire of Order. A drone version of Pearl will be at their side. When players head in, they'll choose a floor and go up one by one, choose their Color Chip enhancement when they do to determine abilities, and then will complete the objective for the area. So in the example shown, the seven floor could be an Easy difficulty Rolling.Floor, a Normal difficulty Escape-Artist.Floor, or a Hard Whirling-Shell.Floor. Each one had a chip tied to it, with the one shown being a Main Ink Coverage Color Chip that increased turf inking coverage by 67%. When on a floor, someone may need to defeat enemies, control turf, or destroy enemy portals. The over 60 Color Chips people get can be placed on their avatar palette to augment abilities.

After the three minute mark, the roguelike element was further confirmed. The tower's floors get more difficult as you climb. If you die, you have to completely restart completely fresh. Any Color Chips earned become Prlz. The Prlz currency could be spent on increasing features like the max number of lives a player has, reducing how much damage you take, or the Pearl Drone's capabilities.

Earth Defense Force 6 Western and PC releases delayed

D3 Publisher announced that it has delayed the Western releases of Earth Defense Force 6 to Summer 2024. The game was originally slated for release in Spring 2024. That means people in the West will have to wait for an additional season until they can play the new mainline Earth Defense Force entry.

This delay also affects the Japanese PC release, as the platform will have a single universal build for all regions. But while the English announcement mentioned additional finishing touches as a reason for the delay, the Japanese press release instead noted a revision in the game's production schedule.

On a related note, Clouded Leopard Entertainment is separately handling the Asian PS5 and PS4 releases of Earth Defense Force 6, which includes an English language option for Southeast Asian countries. The Asian releases are slated to come out on March 14, 2024, and people who purchase the game early can also obtain the Hololive Vtuber DLC decoys.

Clouded Leopard has yet to confirm whether the Western release's delay is also affecting the Asian releases or not. However, D3 Publisher's Japanese press release noted that the delay specifically affects the "European and American versions" instead of "Overseas versions" that would have included Asia as well.

Earth Defense Force 6 is immediately available on PlayStation 5 and 4 in Japan. The now-delayed Western localized version and the global PC releases of Earth Defense Force 6 will appear in Summer 2024.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Valentines Feature Major Characters

Square Enix took to social media to share an array of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth cards ahead of Valentine's Day with 10 major characters on them. Each is designed to either be shared online or printed out and used.

Things started out with two valentines of Cloud and Barret. Following those two, ones with Tifa, Aerith, Cait Sith, Vincent, Red XIII, Yuffie, and Cid appeared. The final one involved Sephiroth.

Most of these cards feature messages connected to elements of the character. So Cid's says, "My heart would damn well fly anywhere for you." Aerith's references the fact she hired Cloud as a bodyguard by saying, "Will you be my bodyguard?" Some aren't though, as Cloud's says "I ship us."

Here's a full gallery showing off all the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Valentine's Day cards.

This isn't the only "romantic" Final Fantasy VII Rebirth sort of media shared online with major characters. The PlayStation TikTok account released a take on the Cloud and Sephiroth video where they are embracing with the words "you look lonely" and "I can fix that."

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will come to the PS5 on February 29, 2024. The demo will update with Junon content on February 21, 2024. The PS5 exclusivity arrangement expires on May 29, 2024. FFVII Remake is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and FFVII Ever Crisis is available on the PC and mobile devices.

Nintendo 2DS and New 3DS repairs to cease in Japan

Nintendo announced repairs for the Nintendo 2DS and the New Nintendo 3DS line will soon be no longer available in Japan. Nintendo announced that the time limit for the company to retain spare parts for the handheld consoles had passed. Therefore, it no longer restocks the spare parts and will stop repairing the consoles after it has completely run out of parts.

The models affected by this announcement are the regular Nintendo 2DS [FTR-001], New Nintendo 3DS [KTR-001], and New Nintendo 3DS LL (XL) [RED-001]. The New Nintendo 2DS LL (XL) that came out in 2017 is the only console in the 3DS family that still has a steady supply of spare parts as of this announcement.

Nintendo has been gradually phasing out support for its 3DS consoles, along with the Wii U. The company has shut down the eShop on both platforms in March 2023, and it will also cease most of the console's online services on April 8, 2024.

But even though Nintendo will soon stop accepting repairs for the New 3DS series and the original 2DS, people who reside around Japan's Noto peninsula and had their consoles damaged by the earthquake on the 2024 New Year's Day can still have the units repaired free of charge until July 1, 2024.
