Best turn-based strategy games on PC 2024

What are the best turn-based strategy games? The break afforded by 'turns' allows us to think, ponder, and plan our moves with as much expert precision as we can muster. Witnessing that master plan unfold can be immensely satisfying, and suddenly, you get a taste of becoming a master tactician.

This genre is also home to the 'one more turn' trope - that feeling of near-addiction that compels you to click the 'End Turn' button just one more time to see what happens in one of the best PC games. Maybe you're waiting to see the outcome of a daring attack; perhaps you're just trying to click through some downtime. We also have the best strategy games or 4X games to see our thoughts on that particular niche. Note that despite many similarities, we're not counting tactical RPG games among this list, as that's technically a different genre.

Deus Ex is often cited as one of the best FPS games ever made, alongside the likes of Half-Life and Doom.      Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2024) review

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (2024) is the biggest, most powerful gaming laptop in the company's arsenal, and it's certainly not shy about its status with its flashy exterior. Thankfully, it has plenty of reasons to be so proud underneath all that RGB, particularly when it comes to its performance and display. That said, some of its flaws are hard to ignore, even in the face of a dazzling display and impressive frame rates.

For the past several weeks, I've been testing the Scar 18's credentials as a would-be best gaming laptop contender, and Asus has left me mostly impressed. Credit to Arma developer's Bohemia Interactive, however. Their April 1st announcement was that the latest update for Arma Reforger was Tiny Wars, a game mode in which you controlled tiny toy Army Men as they waged war around a proportionally huge home. As ever, this isn't really a joke, but it also wasn't exactly a lie, because you can actually play Tiny Wars for real now.

In Keepsake's co-op four-player space game Jump Ship, née Hyperspace, you can scuttle your own vessel by overcooking a pizza. There's a cooking minigame in your ship's canteen which grants a health boost if you nail the timing, and sparks off a fire if you don't.

It's a pretty minor fire, mind you. A combusting deep dish doesn't place very highly on the list of possible ship emergencies next to, say, your reactor coughing up nuclear rods, or your engines running out of juice because some oaf hooked up too many turrets to the aforesaid reactor. But if you leave the fire unchecked, perhaps because you're busy disposing of radioactive waste or vengefully unplugging half the point defences, it'll eventually singe your ship's health to nothing - insert appropriate Steam achievement pun and/or Klingon proverb. It's an agreeable little note of idiocy in a game that takes cues from Valve's timeless anecdote generator Left 4 Dead, Sea Of Thieves, FTL and, perhaps most surprisingly, Diablo.

FFXIV Dawntrail Viper

One of the key features found in Microsoft's Xbox console ecosystem is the profanity filter. This is a semi-permanent and forced element that is there to protect users of all ages. It filters out certain words in all games and censors them online. Unfortunately, the Xbox profanity filter is ruining the FFXIV in-game chat.

While Xbox Series X players may be hyped to finally dive into FFXIV, chat is a bit problematic no matter if you are on a free trial or a subscription Since this is an MMORPG, players can chat with one another online. However, the profanity filter on Xbox censors some of the most unnecessary words. It is so excessive at this point that it almost feels like a bug.

Here's an example from Minfilia and Blamite on social media:

https://twitter.com/Minfilia/status/1774300817555964128

For instance, the Xbox Series X will censor words like "class" and "raids" in a FFXIV chat, no matter what your settings are in-game. So words like class will appear as "cl???" while raids will look like "r???." This is seemingly because these words contain other, more graphic or sensitive words within them. As you can imagine, that makes communicating with your friends and strangers frustrating. Good luck trying to find some new raid partners with these profanity filters on.

Worse still, the FFXIV setting for chat profanity doesn't help with this Xbox profanity filter at all. The game censors certain curse words for those who don't want to see them, and you can turn this option off in the in-game menus. However, turning this off does not alleviate this problem in the slightest. In fact, you can try to head to your system settings and change the "Message Safety" setting to "unfiltered," and it still won't help.

For now, this is an issue that has no fix. That is a huge problem for an MMO, as you want to be able to let someone know you need help in Thanalan, but potentially can't because the word contains a certain other word Microsoft doesn't want everyone seeing. It doesn't matter if you are shouting, whispering, or even chatting with your Free Company. This will always be a problem.

For now, all we can do is reach out to Microsoft and Square Enix, then hope this changes in the future. After all, this is a cross-play MMORPG with PC, PS4, and PS5 players. There are no such issues on those other platforms. This essentially means Xbox players are at a disadvantage for no reason. For now, Xbox players may need to adapt shorthand versions of words to communicate. For instance, changing "class" to "clas" and "raid" to "rayd" or the like. Hopefully this changes soon or else the Xbox chat in FFXIV may be almost entirely unusable.

Final Fantasy XIV is available right now for PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Its fifth expansion, Dawntrail, will release on July 2, 2024.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Vane DLC and Gameplay Video Debut

The new Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising Vane DLC is now live, and there's also a character guide video showing gameplay to accompany his launch. He is $7.99 when purchased alone, and he is also a part of the $34.99 Character Pass 1 or $49.99 Deluxe Character Pass 1.

Vane is known as the Knight of Friendship in Granblue Fantasy, and he's a Dragon Knight alongside Lancelot, Percival, and Siegfried. All three of them already appeared ahead of him. He attacks with a polearm in battle, which means he uses a lot of medium and long ranged attacks. When someone gets his add-on, they also get an avatar of him, his badge, Figure Studio poses and expressions, and the Treuer Krieger weapon cutout.

The video begins by going over his skills. So we start with a look at Wild Beat, then that goes into Arm Destruction. Energy Destruction comes after that. Then, that goes into One for All, Breakthrough, and Ausbruch Schlag.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFD5tpPVy_8&ab_channel=CygamesEN

Vane is the third character to show up for the game so far. The DLC for the first season pass kicked off with Lucilius. Then, 2B from NieR Automata joined the cast. After Vane, Beatrix will become part of the roster. She's expected to debut in May 2024.

Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising is available for the PS4, PS5, and PC, and the Vane DLC is out now.

Here's How Cait Sith Looks in FFVII Ever Crisis

On April Fools' Day 2024, Square Enix teased Reeve Tuesti for FFVII Ever Crisis, before confirming that it is really Cait Sith joining the playable cast on April 3, 2024. Now it offered an additional update sharing the official art and some screenshots of the character as he'll appear in-game on social media

First, here's the official character portrait for Cait Sith. You'll see it used alongside any text boxes where he speaks in chapters in FFVII Ever Crisis.

Next, here is the official "story" character model and a screenshot of Cait Sith in the FFVII Ever Crisis version of the Gold Saucer. Whenever there's a story scene, this model comes up.

Finally, here's the in-battle model for the character. This is the most detailed of the three. The additional image here shows how he looks when performing the Dice Limit Break attack.

Whenever Square Enix and Applibot announce new playable characters for FFVII Ever Crisis, the companies share art to introduce them. For example, we got to see how Yuffie looks in the overworld, during story scenes, and in-battle ahead of her debut. It happened with the First Soldier version of young Sephiroth too. This means we'll likely also see this happen with Cid and Vincent in the FFVII story chapters sometime in 2024 too.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for the PC and mobile devices, and Cait Sith will be playable on April 3, 2024 worldwide and April 4, 2024 in Japan.

Dragon's Dogma 2 Sales

Capcom has announced that sales of Dragon's Dogma 2 reached 2.5 million worldwide, bringing the franchise total to over 10 million cumulative units sold. The game released to favorable review,s but was embroiled in controversy surrounding the inclusion of microtransactions after launch.

The company announced the milestone in a statement published to the investor relations part of the Capcom website, which also gave an overview of the game and the Dragon's Dogma franchise as a whole. Sales of the game now sit at over 2.5 million globally, while franchise total sales have reached 10 million. It is unknown if that number also includes sales of the Japan-only Dragon's Dogma Online. For comparison, the first game reached one million sales roughly a month after its original launch back in 2012.

A recent patch for Dragon's Dogma 2 appeared on PC and PS5 back in March, 2024, which made it easier to acquire a house or start a new game, as well as increasing the availability of items that let you edit your character's appearance. Prior to the game's launch, director Hideaki Itsuno revealed that the meat seen cooking during camping scenes was in fact real meat rather than CGI.

Dragon's Dogma 2 is immediately available on the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Code Geass Gottwald and Alstreim Farm Orange Juice

An advertisement video promoting orange juice from the Gottwald & Alstreim Farm in the Code Geass universe appeared on the series' official YouTube channel on the 2024 April Fools' Day. Sunrise revealed on the following day that it will actually produce and sell the branded juice in real life. The studio will also open temporary pop-up stores that sell the juice bottles along with other Code Geass merchandise.

Here is the trailer that Sunrise originally uploaded on April 1, 2024. The studio later updated the video's title and description on April 2, 2024, to confirm that it will actually sell the orange juice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEwDRh1nTJ8

Sunrise will work with Shiraito to open online orders for the branded orange juice on April 6, 2024. The companies will also open two temporary pop-up stores at Sunrise World Tokyo and BiVi Nijo Kyoto on April 6-14, 2024.

A juice bottle will cost 3,000 yen (~$20), and it will come with a bonus acrylic stand. The buyer will be able to choose a stand based on Jeremiah, Anya, Lelouch, or C.C.

This orange juice product is inspired by Jeremiah Gottwald, a major Code Geass character who received the popular nickname "Orange" due to his orange-colored eyes. The primary reference came from the epilogue of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, where Jeremiah ended up working with Anya Alstreim to run an orange farm.

The Code Geass-inspired Gottwald & Alstreim Farm Orange Juice will be available for sale in Japan on April 6, 2024.

Final Fantasy VII FFVII Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart Bring Arts return without NFT

Square Enix revealed that it will restock the Bring Arts action figures of Final Fantasy VII leads Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart but without the NFT certificates. Pre-orders for the new batch are immediately available on the Japanese Square Enix e-Store. Both action figures will be available at the same price of 13,200 yen (~$87).

Square Enix originally revealed Cloud's Bring Arts figure in July 2022. Tifa's action figure followed later together with Aerith in September 2022. These Final Fantasy VII items sparked controversy for featuring NFT in the form of digital certificates, even in their regular releases. Back then, Square Enix also offered a Digital Plus edition that included additional NFT featuring an AR version of the figure.

When Square Enix revealed more FFVII Bring Arts action figures featuring Yuffie, Vincent, Cid, and Cait Sith in February 2024, it made no mention of such certificates at all. And when the company announced the restocks for the earlier figures via the e-Store's official X account, it added a fine print noting that the products will not include digital genuine product certificates. That means these re-releases of Cloud and Tifa's Bring Arts figures will not have any NFT.

The Final Fantasy VII Bring Arts action figures of Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart will be available again on July 27, 2024.

Silent Hill 2 Remake ESRB Rating Mentions a Line From Mary

The ESRB rating for the Silent Hill 2 remake is live and, it is rated Mature just like the original. The ratings summary for it also references James' trip to Heaven's Night in town and a reminder from Mary about a videotape.

The content descriptors are different between the original Silent Hill 2 and the remake. Both games feature warnings about "violence" and "blood and gore." However, new to the remake are ones for "language" and "sexual themes." There is no rating summary for the past entry, so it isn't possible to compare.

However, the Heaven's Night strip club was in both the original game and is referenced in the ESRB description for the Silent Hill 2 remake. When discussing the "sexual themes" present in this game, the description mentioned elements from the club and posters of its performers.

The reference to Mary comes up at the end of the Silent Hill 2 rating summary. One of her lines is directly referenced there. It reads, "Remember that time in the hotel? You said you took everything. But you forgot that videotape we made." Those who played the original may recall what that referenced.

Here's the full rating summary for the game from the ESRB:

This is a horror adventure game in which players assume the role of a man returning to a mysterious town while being tormented by his past. From a third-person perspective, players explore the town of Silent Hill, interact with characters, and battle humans and creatures (e.g., Pyramid Head, mannequins, monsters). Players use pistols, shotguns, rifles, and knives to kill enemies. Combat is highlighted by realistic gunfire, cries of pain, and blood-splatter effects. Some environments depict large bloodstains and/or intestines/organs on walls, floors, and surrounding bodies. Cutscenes and illustrations depict further instances of violence and/or blood and gore: characters impaled; a character suffocated to death with a pillow; enemies with body parts sewn together. The game contains some suggestive/sexual material: characters pole-dancing in strip-club settings; posters of women in revealing outfits (e.g., bra and thong, deep cleavage); dialogue alluding to sexuality and/or sexual abuse/misconduct (e.g., "Remember that time in the hotel? You said you took everything. But you forgot that videotape we made"; "Don't touch me...You're only after one thing…Or you could just force me, like he always did."). The word "sh*t" appears in the game.

The Silent Hill 2 remake is in development for PS5 and PC, and Konami hasn't released a release date yet.
