PCGamesN Monday, April 8, 2024 4:38 PM Throne of Bone immediately sets itself apart from the games it most resembles with an eye catching visual style. Its clean, colorful cartoon character designs, all themed around skeletons and monsters, pop from the screen as immediately as the art featured in games like Hades or Darkest Dungeon. PCGamesN Monday, April 8, 2024 10:54 AM Between Baldur's Gate 3, Diablo 4, Balatro, and then upcoming surefire hits like GTA 6, it's been a busy era for new games. Some have staying power. Some, unfortunately, do not. Even great games can get swept away by the passage of time and advent of new releases - what seems like a modern classic one month can be forgotten by the next. But it's not always this way. Years, even a decade later, some games suddenly find themselves super popular again, with a teeming player base either discovering them for the first time, or coming back for another waltz. A huge-scale, super realistic, war-based MMO, originally launched in 2022, is one such example. It might have slipped your mind by now, or perhaps passed you by entirely, but with thousands more players in the past week, this is proof that some games just keep living. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, April 8, 2024 1:44 PM It's odd to think back on a time before Baldur's Gate 3 - and even stranger to think that the sprawling Dungeons & Dragons RPG was actually kicking around for a long while before its 1.0 release blew up awards shows, social media feeds and fan-fiction hubs last summer. Putting the game out into early access at the end of 2020 - multiple years before it was ready for a full release - worked out very well for Larian though, so it's maybe no surprise that they plan to do exactly the same with whatever comes next. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, April 8, 2024 12:20 PM The deck-fixing roguelikelike poker of Balatro is chuffing excellent, no doubt, but my main criticism has been that the higher difficulty modes are just a bit boring. Having beat them myself, I didn't find them a fun or interesting challenge as much as an annoying one that required too much to go right. I'm glad to hear that they're being tweaked in an upcoming patch, which you can now test in a public beta on Steam, and even the lowest difficulty setting will be tweaked. Other changes include improved (hopefully) Steam Deck performance, balance tweaks, and better Joker-related Tags. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Monday, April 8, 2024 12:03 PM When Bethesda was working out how to turn their popular Elder Scrolls RPGs into an online behemoth to rival World Of Warcraft back in the late 00s, the initial pitch was "Elder Scrolls with friends," creative director Rich Lambert tells me. A simple idea on paper, perhaps, but one that proved to be a lot more complicated in the realisation of it. Zenimax Online Studios was founded in 2007, a year after The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion landed to universal critical praise, but it wasn't until seven years later that The Elder Scrolls Online finally released for PC in 2014. At launch "we were walking this weird line between 'online game' and 'Elder Scrolls game'," Lambert says. "We didn't do either of them particularly well." Ten years later, though, The Elder Scrolls Online is thriving. At last count, the game has over 24 million players galloping about the plains of Tamriel, and later this June, it will receive its eighth major Chapter expansion, Gold Road, which adds Oblivion's West Weald to the game and wraps up the mystery of the new Daedric Prince that arrived at the end of the previous expansion, Necrom. But the path ESO has taken to get here hasn't been nearly as glittering, with its PC launch in particular generating "a lot of feedback", as studio director Matt Firor told press at the game's tenth anniversary event last week. In fact, it wasn't until ESO came to consoles in 2015 that the game really found its voice, says Lambert. "We had to really figure out what we wanted to be, and we chose 'Elder Scrolls'. As soon as we hit that core pillar of 'It's Elder Scrolls first, online second,' then it really just helped inform everything we've done since." Trouble is, when the thrust of ESO's development straddled the launch of two very different Elder Scrolls games, even nailing down that first part of the pillar proved to be more challenging than expected. |

AmiAmi started taking orders for Hasegawa's Rebuild of Evangelion NERV business coup model kit that includes the car and a Asuka Shikinami Langley figure will return. It will show up again in late July 2024, with the official price being 4,400 yen (~$29). AmiAmi is selling it for 3080 yen (~$20).
This is a 1/24th scale model kit set. It is almost 14 inches by 8 inches by 2.7 inches. The example images of both the car and Asuka figure are fully painted. However, the pieces appear unpainted on runners. (Someone will get decals for her eyes.) The kit first appeared back in 2020, ahead of its 2024 return.
Here's a closer look at painted, completed versions of the car and Asuka.
For those wondering where and when the car appeared in the Rebuild of Evangelion films, the Mazda Cosmo like NERV business coupe appeared in Evangelion 1.0 and 2.0. The reason Asuka is included with the model kit is because she is often a passenger. (Misato is often driving the vehicle.)
More models based on the series are going to come out over the next year or so. The Evangelion Final Model Mortal Mind is on the way. Good Smile Company also announced an AAA Wunder PLAMAX model kit.
The Rebuild of Evangelion films are streaming on Amazon, and the NERV business coup model kit that includes the car and Asuka Shikinami Langley is expected to return in July 2024. The anime is on Netflix.

Announced and released in the space of a month, Holo X Break is another Hololive-focused fan-game by the team behind the excellent Vampire Survivors-like Holocure. This time taking the form of a side-scrolling beat-em-up, Holo X Break doesn't quite capture the replayability of its sister game, but it still delivers on both references and multiplayer fun.
The plot is breezily simple. You play as members of Hololive's 5th generation trying to rescue the company's CEO from the 6th generation, Secret Society HoloX. There are 4 characters to start with and another 5 that unlock after beating the game once. Each of the members you play as has a basic attack and several skills that you'll unlock as you level up, and as they do so they begin to fall into certain roles. Botan, for example, is based around ranged damage-dealing inspired by the real streamer's fondness for FPS games, but she struggles when lots of enemies get close. Meanwhile, Nene's infectious positivity and brash personality is interpreted as something like a Paladin, with close ranged attacks backed up by healing and buffs.
The meat of the gameplay is scrolling through levels, beating up goons and picking up items and equipment. The combat is simple, and does lack some of the combos or other complexities found in say, Streets of Rage, but it's buoyed up by both the references and a small loot system with various effects like attack modifiers, healing or cooldown reduction. There's also a bevy of consumable drops with both offensive and defensive effects, and the frequency these appear at combined with your limited inventory encourages you to use them liberally. Again, it's not as in depth as other games but it also doesn't need to be, and the laid back brawling-with-friends style of gameplay wouldn't be especially well served by having to stop and measure increasingly infinitesemal stat bonuses in a Nioh or Diablo-like loot system.
The stages are charming and colorful, chock-full of jokes for those in the know but still pretty pleasing to the eye if you're not. They can get a little repetitive since they usually only have a few backgrounds and are essentially a featureless street, but it rarely felt particularly grating since your focus will be elsewhere. Then between the stages is a short rest stop with a shop and upgrade center for tinkering with your item loadout, or better yet sinking your coins in the emote gatcha. There are over 140 emotes in the game, drawn by various Hololive fan-artists and, importantly, all properly credited.
Playing solo the game felt serviceable, but with a friend it was a real blast. While it didn't launch with online multiplayer, Steam's remote play feature lets you essentially simulate couch co-op as a stop-gap measure. Not having used the feature before I was skeptical, but it ended up being as easy to set up as regular multiplayer, barring some issues with recent updates on Steam's end. Now, they say every game is more fun with friends but I think Holo X Break threads a particular needle of being simple enough to enjoy while chatting while remaining complex enough to engage. I only intended to test for a few minutes with a colleague and ended up whiling away nearly 2 hours, explaining the in-jokes and references as we played.
There are a few blemishes, however. While the tutorial feeds you information at a steady pace, there's no way to see a general overview of controls, only reset the tutorials altogether. As for the combat, while the impact and animations all felt satisfyingly punchy I did find it frustrating the way special attacks require a charge time to activate. It's a small complaint, but I felt it disincentivized using them in the middle of a pack of enemies where they would otherwise be most useful. These are flaws you'll likely barely notice while playing with friends, but when repeatedly going solo they tend to stick out more.
Most glaringly there's also a lack of save functionality: if you want to try a new character or have someone else join, you'll need to start again from the beginning. A full run through the game only takes around an hour and it's not like it takes long to get into, but the lack of the option is noticeable. While we're on the topic of restarting, the game could also benefit from a stage select and an option to start with all your abilities unlocked, since starting new runs can be a bit of a drag for the first few stages otherwise.
But taken as what it is, a charming game with excellent production quality available entirely for free, there's little to really complain about. While it likely won't keep you as engrossed as Holocure, which to be fair has received a fair chunk of post-launch content, Holo X Break is another excellent addition to both the Holo Indie label and the growing roster of quality Hololive fan-games.
Holo X Break is immediately available on PC via Steam, with online multiplayer set to be added in a future update.

The Tekken 8 and Chipotle has begun, and players will be able to earn in-game currency by ordering from the restaurant chain. A special Tekken 8 Battle Bowl will also be added to the menu.
Customers ordering through the Chiptotle website and app can earn currency for use in the Tekken 8 shop. By using the promo code EWGF623, players will receive a code for 500 Tekken Coins, enough to grab a character costume from the Tekken Shop. The code is a reference to the Electric Wind God Fist move, used by members of the Mishima family throughout the Tekken series. Chipotle reward members can also earn an additional 500 Tekken Coins by trading in their points. These Tekken Coins are only redeemable with the PlayStation or Xbox versions of the game. The promotion opens on April 8, 2024, and closes either on August 31, 2024, or when all 20,000 codes have been claimed.
In addition, a Tekken 8 themed item will be added to the Chipotle digital menu. The Tekken 8 Battle Bowl contains ingredients selected via a social media poll. These are chicken, white rice, black beans, tomato salsa, roasted chilli-corn salsa, fajita veggies, cheese and guac.
Chipotle will also be acting as the sponsor of a Tekken 8 tournament taking place on PS5. The restaurant will be the first sponsor within Sony's PS5 Tournaments platform, with a final airing on the official PlayStation Twitch and YouTube channels on May 4, 2024. Winners can receive a trip to EVO 2024, free Chipotle for a year and a share of $20,000.
Tekken 8 has also been unofficially connected with another restaurant chain recently. Players have been requesting a Waffle House stage, causing confusion from series producer Katsuhiro Harada.
Tekken 8 is out now for PS5, PC and Xbox Series X/S. The first DLC character, Eddy Gordo, is also out now.

Now that the Final Fantasy XVI The Rising Tide DLC that brings Mysidia and Leviathan to the game is about to debut, Square Enix shared more screenshots of the game. Specifically, the images highlight the new location.
As a reminder, players will get to go through this new adventure once they get near the end of the game. Clive and his allies are summoned to Mysidia on behalf of Leviathan's Dominant. When they head to the area, they discover it hasn't been hit by the Blight like the rest of the world.
Here are the latest Final Fantasy XVI screenshots:
This is only one bit of teasing tied to the game ahead of the Final Fantasy XVI The Rising Tide Mysidia and Leviathan DLC launch. Clive Rosfield voice actor Ben Starr also shared a clip of "his last line" recorded as the character.
Once this add-on is released, there will still be one more major announcement to wait for. That is the PC release date. Square Enix and Producer Naoki Yoshida already confirmed it will head to the other platform. Also, just like with the PS5 release, there will be a demo.
Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PS5, and its The Rising Tide DLC will debut on April 18, 2024. The game will also eventually come to PCs.
