PCGamesN Friday, June 7, 2024 5:43 PM All the way back in 2011, No More Room in Hell, a Half-Life 2 mod inspired by classic George Romero zombie movies, came out. In the more than a decade since its launch, the subgenre it belongs to — the horror co-op game — has transformed, growing from its roots in projects like Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 and mutating into new forms, like Dead by Daylight, The Outlast Trials, and Phasmophobia. While the occasional throwback, like Back 4 Blood, has offered a return to the style of gritty co-op that the first No More Room in Hell provided, today's announcement of No More Room in Hell 2 marks the most direct revival of the original game's spirit to date. PCGamesN Friday, June 7, 2024 12:00 PM Realism is a difficult thing to achieve in videogames. In some cases, it means painstaking resource and status-effect management, with survival hits like Sons of the Forest impressing on you the 'real' requirements of remaining alive. Other times, the effect is more in the aesthetic - especially in shooters, when I think of realism, I think of loud guns, frantic, disorientating action, and swift death. Out now via Steam Early Access, a new bodycam game, aptly named Bodycam, fits that latter characterization squarely. A would-be rival to hardcore FPS games like Tarkov and Gray Zone Warfare, it's already one of the most wishlisted new releases on Steam, and you can play it today. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:56 PM Enough moons ago to qualify as quite a lot of moons but not so much for me to categorise them as 'many', Alice Bee wrote about an Itch game called Kevin Costner's Waterworld - a fully playable extrapolation of a Simpsons' joke from three decades ago. Simpsons jokes from three decades making up most of my sense of humour, I of course thought it was brilliant. And yet, I couldn't shake a singular, burning question: What if this, but not joke? Enter Tides Of Tomorrow. Ok, so I actually don't know if it has anything in common with Waterworld aside from having lots of water everywhere. Still, I'll never pass up an opportunity for a crispy Simpsons reference. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:43 PM UFO 50 is a collection of fictional retro games designed as if they were made for a non-existent games console 40 years ago, but in reality have been developed as brand new titles for an upcoming collection from indie devs including Spelunky creator Derek Yu. With the ambitious project nearing a decade in its own development, though, those games have now taken on their own real history in addition to their made-up one. Those histories will meet this September, when UFO 50 finally sees the light of day. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:27 PM Before we get to the latest trailer for S-Game's soulslike Phantom Blade Zero I have a couple of complaints to lodge about the title. Firstly, this game clearly contains a non-zero quantity of blades, from whacking great axes to katanas. Secondly, I do not accept the premise that these are phantom blades. They are very obviously non-spectral, going by the amount of stabbing and clanging on show in the video. With these potentially ruinous caveats out of the way, I am now free to tell you more about a game that looks like it's out to eat Sekiro's lunch. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:09 PM Are Tamagotchis a thing now again? I'm getting a sense they might be, but I'll always associate them with the nineties. Ah, to return to a simpler time, where kids tripped each other up in the school hallways to steal toys , before Pokémon cards came along and everyone leveled up to stabbings. Sorry, Petal Runner devs, for opening a news article about your lovely wholesome game talking about stabbings. This gorgeous, fuschia-splashed, slice-of-life RPG is, if anything, the antidote to stabbings. In terms of game fatigue, anyway. It won't cure tetanus, at least I don't think so. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:07 PM When the Summer Game Fest trailer for "narrative-centric cosy game" Wanderstop said it was from the creator behind The Stanley Parable, I thought I had surely entered a different dimension where The Stanley Parable was actually a wholesome shop-keeping sim rather than a zig-zagging office-based nightmare. Then Wanderstop started to get rather bleak, and I finally stopped pinching myself. See for yourself. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 7:02 PM Grid-based puzzler Grindstone was a favourite of Katharine's, who found it to be her go-to during regularly scheduled moments of "cat-based paralysis". I didn't spent quite so many hours of feline enforced stasis with it, but I too was drawn in for a respectable time chunk. It's those detail-stuffed visuals and caffeinated animations that tipped it for me, and it's the same art that have me excited for Capybara's follow-up. Battle Vision Network is an online puzzle battler that pits you head to head against real-life humans (boo those guys). The conceit here is its a televised space sport, in which you'll steer the fate of its ongoing story arcs by winning or losing as your chosen team. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:57 PM Palworld is getting a lot of new things! I'm going to write the names of these new things now. I really hope they mean something to you. I want you to have nice things. Here are the new things coming to Palworld: a new island. Some new Pals. A new level cap. A new arena. A new subspecies. A new raid. A new oil rig stronghold. A new faction and boss. Maybe some other, secret things? All this newness comes as part of the 'Sakurajima' update, which releases on June 27th, 2024. |

Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:29 PM Warframe-like "Next-gen looter shooter" The First Descendant releases this Summer, July 2nd 2024. The 'next-gen' part probably refers to Unreal Engine 5, and fair's fair, it's a real looker this one. The below trailer is mainly scripted or edited bits, but having played a chunk of the last technical test, there's some genuinely impressive sci-fi vistas to behold, as well as some absolutely massive bosses. Click on the trailer below, until the purple hat or whatever it is you kids grind for these days, pops out with a synapse-tickling noise workshopped by psychologists for eighteen months. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:25 PM I'm not familiar with the proto-internet cartoon Killer Bean, but Graham assures me it's fairly important in the history of online animation. Regardless, I've been won over by the upcoming video game of the same name from original creator Jeff Lew, which looks to blend together Just Cause stunt shenanigans, John Woo slo-mo gunfights and the energy of a third-person action game you would've found in a bargain bin for the PlayStation 2 in 2002. It'll hit early access this summer, courtesy of a fresh look from tonight's Summer Game Fest showcase. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:08 PM In what is only the third ever piece of videogame-related media to make me weep at my keyboard, Volgar the Viking devs and retro specialists Digital Eclipse have announced a Power Rangers videogame - Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind. It's a 90s-ass side-scrolling arcade brawler for up to five players, involves "time twisting", and has mode-7-style arcade shooter bits together with the original TV show's climactic mecha transformation sequences. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:04 PM A French game about mountain climbing? No, not that one. This is Cairn, not Jusant, and it's actually a very different beast. Jusant could be tricky, but climbing was more the way you experienced its story. In survival climber Cairn, the ascent is the story. It seem to mainly be a story about how bad you are at climbing. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 6:01 PM Boheh Game Studio's horror game Slitterhead will release for PC on November 8th 2024, the developers have revealed at this year's Summer Game Fest. They've also popped up a new trailer, which is PS2 as hell, in what I consider to be the best of ways. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:55 PM Neva is immediately recognisable as the next puzzle platformer from the developers behind Gris thanks to its sweeping, overlapping planes and effortlessly natural watercolour art, which were both on show again in tonight's Geoffest Summer Game Fest show. I was expecting more eye candy from Neva after its announcement last summer, but what caught me by surprise was all the hacking and slashing that ensues in its second trailer. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:51 PM It's easy to draw comparisons between Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona, given that the upcoming RPG is in the works over at Persona makers Atlus and is built around a similar 'transform into an awesome-looking robot/creature and do battle' concept, but so far all those comparisons only serve to highlight just how damn good Metaphor: ReFantazio looks. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:46 PM Oh, this one looks nice, doesn't it? Tears Of Metal is a rousing medieval stabathon that sees you retaking your Scottish island from a bunch of bad lads who've decided to come have a go, which was a bit silly of them, honestly. It's a hack n' slash co-op roguelike with some nifty looking strategy elements and a striking art style, but you can tell most of that from the trailer below: |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:30 PM Taking that famous quote from Romero's Dawn Of The Dead, then sticking a '2' on the end because that's how sequels work, No More Room In Hell 2 is an eight player co-op horror from Chivalry 2 bods Torn Banner. It's been teased for a while now, but now it's got a release month: this October, 2024. Shamble hungrily toward the trailer below |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:29 PM The way not-E3 games showcases work is that you open with something attention-getting an unexpected, end with the biggest game of the show, and pack the middling and mundane in the middle. Sid Meier's Civilization VII is surely one of the biggest announcements of this year's (in-progress, as I type this) Summer Game Fest 2024, and yet it was buried in that middle section, as unassuming as Sid himself. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:27 PM Unbroken Studios and Warner Bros' Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions will launch on 3rd September 2024, as announced at this year's Summer Game Fest with a new trailer. It's still a game about the Potterverse's broomstick-riding sport, allowing players to compete against the computer and each other across various single player and multiplayer modes, and it's still a new instalment in the world of an author, JK Rowling, who has a track record for endorsing transphobia. |
Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 5:22 PM Surprise! The next Horizon game after Zero Dawn and Forbidden West is also the next Lego game. Rock Paper Shotgun Latest Articles Feed Friday, June 7, 2024 12:49 PM Stare into an abyss for long enough and, as Nietzsche wrote, a mostly naked man will wobble out of the abyss and try to murder you with a mattock. Inasmuch as can be told in the absence of dialogue or a text preamble, the naked man wants to murder you because you, and not he, are in possession of a hat. The hat makes you look like an eraser pencil from Forbidden Planet. It's the kind of headgear worn by the kind of criminal Batman's too grown-up to fight anymore. But it has, nonetheless, roused in this under-dressed stranger a sense of Dionysian frenzy. He will do anything for that hat - hewing your arms off, ripping your intestines out, tearing the skin from your ribcage. And you, in turn, will do anything to rob him of that mattock, because by the gods, it looks a lot more dangerous than the candlestick you're trying to fend him off with. There are many such lost souls in the bleak, midnight world of the Half Sword demo - all lurking near candle-lit piles of randomly spawned hammers, stools, barrels, axes and lengths of wood, all subject to unforgivably authentic physics and cursor-based attacks that conspire to transform every scuffle into a Monty Python blooper reel. |

Atlus broke a Guinness world record during Atlus Fes, winning the award for the world's largest good luck charm (omamori). The good luck charm in question depicts a Jack Frost and a dragon.
In the post on Atlus's official Twitter (X) account, we can see officials posing in front of the charm in question. Around them are Jack Frost, Morgana, and Teddie—mascots of the Shin Megami Tensei and Persona series. They're holding a sign that says Atlus is the record holder for the largest good luck charm (omamori) in the world, complete with a framed Guinness certificate of this accomplishment.
The largest omamori stands at 2.6m x 1.9m. This will only be on display during Atlus Fes, which will run on June 8 and 9, 2024 in Akihabara. Since entry is free, those in Japan are welcome to go check it out while it's still there. Atlus Fes is an event to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company. As a note, there won't be any announcements of new games at Atlus Fes. However, you can take part in demos for upcoming games like Metaphor: ReFantazio.
It's unknown what Atlus will do with the world's largest omamori after the event is over.

At the Summer Game Fest 2024, Capcom shared the second trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds showcasing new gameplay as well as the new Balahara monster. Additionally, Capcom confirmed that Monster Hunter Wilds will feature crossplay.
The Balahara is a Leviathan type monster that fights using the dunes of the desert to his advantage. The new monster can create pits of quicksand to ensnare players. The new gameplay trailer also showed the player hunter fighting while riding the Seikret bird mount. While melee weapons seem to have a limited moveset, bowgun users will be able to shoot with some level of freedom while moving atop the beast.
You can check out the new Balahara gameplay trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds here:
The new footage also confirmed that the playable hunter will also speak during cutscenes. A glimpse of this could be seen in the previous trailer shared during the latest May 2024 State of Play, alongside the Palico talking.
Additionally, series Producer Ryozo Tsujimoto confirmed that a new trailer will appear at opening night of Gamescom in August 2024, and the first public hands playable demo will also be available at the event. Capcom confirmed the addition of crossplay to Monster Hunter Wilds in a tweet made by the official social media account.
Monster Hunter Wilds is currently in development for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC and is set to release simultaneously in 2025.

Phantom Blade 0 returned at the Summer Game Fest 2024 presentation, this time with a 2024 World Tour demo and new trailer. The Rainblood: Town of Death follow-up will be playable starting on June 8, 2024 at Summer Game Fest.
Here are the dates and locations where the Phantom Blade 0 2024 World Tour Demo will appear:
We first learned about the S-Game and Cruelman Studio title back in May 2023. It was a Sony showcase title at the time as well. It's an action-adventure game with Souls-like elements. The Order is hunting down an assassin named Soul. He's dying following being framed for murder. However, he has 66 days in which he can figure out what is going on and perhaps clear his name before he dies.
While we hadn't heard too much about Phantom Blade 0 ahead of this latest appearance, it did show up not long ago. A "Year of the Dragon" anime style trailer appeared in 2024. It showed Soul about to face a member of The Order. In case you missed it, you can catch that below. While most of the video is animated, after the two minute mark gameplay appeared.
Phantom Blade 0 is in development for the PS5, and the 2024 World Tour Demo will appear at Summer Game Fest starting on June 8-10, 2024.

During Summer Game Fest 2024, a new trailer for Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess revealed the release date. It'll come out on July 19, 2024.
You can watch the Kunitsu trailer here:
The trailer shows off how combat will look like, as well as how you can give orders on the fly to your units. It draws heavy inspiration from Japanese aesthetics, culture, and mythology. According to the Steam page for it, Capcom describes it as a single player Kagura Action Strategy game. It seems similar to some of the later Dynasty Warriors games in which you control your own character in combat but must still send out orders to your party.
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess will come out on July 19, 2024 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Windows PC.

The 2.3 Honkai: Star Rail Special Program closed out with a tease to watch the 2024 Summer Game Fest, and the additional showcase offered an extra peek at upcoming content like a new March 7th appearance and Firefly in a new trailer.
Here's a closer look at the latest footage, which teases some of the new characters coming to the free-to-play gacha game alongside returning favorites. While the focus is primarily on Penacony and the characters we met there, two take center stage. One is Firefly, who is a major focus in the Honkai: Star Rail trailer, and the other is the "Legendary New Swordsmaster" March 7th from the Wardance teaser.
This new Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer comes after a bevy of news about what people can expect from Honkai: Star Rail in June 2024. The 2.3 update arrives on June 19, 2024. During the Summer Game Fest in 2024, we saw a new trailer for Slitterhead, showing off the gameplay and release date. It will be an action-focused horror game.
The trailer shows off a few influences from Bokeh Studio founder's previous horror games like Silent Hill and Siren. You'll be able to jump from body to body, with a little glow on the character you jump to that looks similar to the glow from Siren when you sightjack someone. Dogs are also something you can control and jump into. The focus on action draws inspiration from Gravity Rush, which is another game Toyama worked on.
You can watch the Summer Game Fest trailer for Slitterhead here:
Slitterhead will also have you face off against enemies with strange weapons fused to your body, which resemble the weapons from Parasyte. We can see how you can parry attacks and reattach limbs even when enemies cut them off. It's unclear what the story is. However, it seems like you'll be investigating a case of some kind while jumping from body to body.
Slitterhead will come out on the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC, and its release date is November 8, 2024.

A new trailer for Star Wars Outlaws appeared at the 2024 Summer Game Fest, showcasing speeder chases, bike combat, and space battles. The game is still set to relase on August 30, 2024, with more gamplay promised at the Ubisoft Forward event on June 10, 2024.
The trailer shows us some brief snippets of gameplay and in-engine cutscenes as Kay and Nix get up to classic scoundrel shenanigans. We see a job offered to them in a seedy cantina, Nix being used to stealthily steal an item, and some light gambling before shifting. From there, it shifts to exploration gameplay and some combat. Assassin droid ND-5 also appears briefly in his handsomely disheveled overcoat, on board what appears to be an Imperial vessel.
You can watch the Star Wars Outlaws Summer Game Fest trailer via Youtube below:
Originally announced back in June, 2023, the release date for Star Wars Outlaws was later accidentally leaked via a Youtube placeholder. Meanwhile, other games announced at the 2024 Summer Game Fest include a remake of the 2002 Playstation 2 Horror game The Thing, set for a 2024 release.
Star Wars Outlaws is set to release on August 30, 2024, for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. More gameplay is expected at the Ubisoft Forward on Monday June 10, 2024.

During the Summer Game Fest 2024, a trailer for Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind debuted. This looks like a multiplayer action game with heavy retro inspirations and graphics.
You can watch the trailer here:
The entire trailer has a very retro and nostalgic vibe, from the graphics to the animation. It even plays the old Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers theme song over the video. Rita, who is one of the main villains of the series, appears as well and is the titular antagonist of the game. She tends to do that.
It seems like there will be a multitude of game modes you can play through once it launches, as well as different stages. You can beat up enemies with your fellow Power Rangers, shoot enemies while on a roller coaster, and engage in a battle while on motorbikes.
One of the last major Power Rangers games was Battle for the Grid. It was a fighting game that involved heroes and enemies from across the franchise's series. Even after launch, it ended up getting regular paid and free updates that added things like new characters or new stages to fight on.
Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind will come out on the Windows PC via Steam.

Two SNK fighting game staples will join Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, as Vox Reaper and B Jenet were confirmed for the game. Both of them showed up in the Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer.
Here is the full footage. Things started with a general look at the upcoming game. From there, we got a more focused look at certain people. Specifically, that's when the Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves versions of the new character Vox Reaper and returning fighter B Jenet showed up.
This B Jenet City of the Wolves appearance makes sense, given her earliest appearance was in Garou: Mark of the Wolves in 1999. More recently, she appeared in The King of Fighters XV as a DLC character. She's voiced by Amber Lee Connors in this game.
As for Vox Reaper, he's entirely new in this latest Fatal Fury game. However, we do know his voice actor. It will be Erik Ransom.
The last character reveal for the game was Marco Rodrigues. He showed up in April 2024.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will release in early 2025 for the PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC, though there is no exact release window for it just yet.

During the Summer Game Fest 2024, an animated trailer appeared for Street Fighter 6 Year 2 characters, which includes multiple Fatal Fury series fighters. It'll feature collaboration fighters from other fighting game series, in addition to the return of Street Fighter staple Elena.
You can watch the full Street Fighter 6 Summer Game Fest 2024 trailer here, which includes the Fatal Fury characters making cameo appearances right away.
In the trailer, we saw Terry and Mai from Fatal Fury. We also saw Elena and M. Bison, who were characters from past Street Fighter titles. The trailer starts out with Jamie and Luke playing a fighting game, with Jamie thrashing Luke. Then, Terry walks in on them before Mai jumps in as well. It's after that when Elena and M. Bison both end up also appearing.
Street Fighter 6 is readily available on the PS4, PS5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. More information on the release window for Year 2 will come out later.

One of the many announcements made at the 2024 Summer Game Fest was Civilization VII, a new entry in the venerable Sid Meier strategy franchise. The game is currently set for a 2025 release date, but a gameplay showcase is promised for August 2024.
The announcement came with a teaser trailer, although no gameplay was shown. The teaser showed several carved tableaus of various ages, from the Ancient and Classical to Modern and Industrial ages. Classic Civilization Wonders like the Pyramids of Egypt and Great Wall of China are visible, but perhaps the most interesting part of the trailer came at the end where it was shown that the game is planned to release on consoles like the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One, rather than the usual initial PC release. An end card also promises a gameplay showcase for sometime in August 2024.
You can watch the trailer via Youtube below:
Also announced at the Summer Game Fest was Lego Horizon Adventures, a Lego adventure game themed around Horizon: Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. A remake of 2002 Playstation 2 Horror game The Thing was also announced just before the awards began, and is headed to all current consoles.
Civilization VII is in development and will release in 2025 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch.

We'll have the answers to all your Valorant on console-related questions below. Will Valorant have cross-play between PC and console? Before Valorant officially arrives on consoles, Riot will hold a Limited Beta to test it out. The real question is whether Valorant will support cross-play between PC and console, which will not be happening.
