When you look at upcoming shooter Polaris you'll inevitably think of the vehicular shooter action of series like Halo and Battlefield.      Windows 11 is finally more popular with PC gamers than Windows 10

It's taken nearly three years, but PC gamers are now finally ready to crown a new champion. According to the latest Steam Hardware Survey for August 2024, Windows 11 is now the default choice for gamers, knocking Windows 10 from the top spot for the first time since 2016.

Windows remains the dominant platform on the whole with a 96.78% overall share of users running Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Support for other platforms, including macOS and Linux, remains reasonably steady, but still with under 3.22% of the total market share. That includes users running the default Linux-based SteamOS on the Steam Deck. SteamOS might be great on a Steam Deck, but the best gaming PCs are still running Windows (for now, at least).

Kirby and Waddle Dee Plush Can Hold Hands

FuRyu announced new Kirby and Waddle Dee plush are now available in Japanese arcade machines as prizes. The gimmick behind these character is that, if you get more than one in the matching poses, you can pose them so they look like they are holding hands.

There are four total plush options in this new selection, with two being Kirby variations and two being Waddle Dee ones. Each one is 7cm (2.75in) tall. The differences involve expressions and positions of the stars and loops on their hands for different poses. So one "pair" has Kirby with a big smile, yellow star in his left hand, and yellow string. That Waddle Dee holds a pink star in the left hand and pink string. Both of those are also in a walking pose. So someone could connect the strap on Kirby's right hand to that pink star. So you could connect the loop on Waddle Dee's right hand to that yellow star. In the other pair, Kirby has a smaller smile, both he and the Waddle Dee look like they are standing still, and they are holding stars in their right hands.

Here's how all of the variants look:

This isn't the only kind of Kirby merchandise being sold in Japan in September 2024. We know GU will start selling clothing and accessories based on characters from the games starting on September 13, 2024. Takarajima also started selling tumblers with both characters on them in Japan in July 2024 as well.

The new Kirby and Waddle Dee plush are now in Japanese arcades as prizes. The last game in the series was Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe for the Switch, a remake of the 2011 Wii game.

FFXI September Version Update Includes Besieged and Gamepad Progress

Square Enix shared the FFXI September 2024 version update, and it also included some progress reports on Besieged quality of life changes, gamepad configuration for those who use controllers, and character customization. The new version will be available on September 10, 2024.

Most of the September version updates for FFXI involve typical changes. The Ambuscade has new notorious monsters for us to face. While we fought the Morbols and Meebles in August 2024, we need to deal with the Qutrub in Volume 1 and Hydra in Volume 2 next. The Records of Eminence will also be updated, as usual. Sortie items can be sold. The monthly login campaign rewards will change too, with the Ark Angel TT outfit joining the lineup. You need to get 500 points for that. The Ark Scythe that goes with it will also be a part of that campaign. It will be 300 points.

FFXI Director and Producer Yoji Fujito also shared the following statement on the Besieged and gamepad changes that are in development.

"Since the middle of August, we have created a dedicated QA testing room within the office for Besieged. At present, we've finished work on the basic design elements such as monster AI patterns and strength levels, and we plan to start implementing the changes soon. While it depends on any bugs we may discover and our other game balance adjustments, it seems the updates can be released as early as year's end.

At the same time, we're also working on other features such as GAMEPAD Config adjustments and a system that lets you change your character's race. I'll be sure to cover these topics and more when we have additional information to share, so I hope you're looking forward to these upcoming changes and improvements."

Final Fantasy XI is available on PCs. The September version update appears in FFXI on September 10, 2024.

Cup Noodle ad based on El Shaddai meme

Nissin has uploaded a new collaborative Cup Noodle commercial video which features the Japanese meme based on El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron. In this new trailer, Lucifel questions Enoch's choice of his Cup Noodle-branded gear.

The meme originated when a promotional trailer for the El Shaddai game appeared at E3 2010. Enoch's insistence on his original armor and his concession after the reset became a timeless classic in the Japanese gaming community.

Nissin launched this commercial to promote four special-flavored Tokujo Cup Noodle packages. Each of them is themed after the Matsutake mushroom, Seafood, Curry, and Chili Tomato.

The company not only worked with Crim to apply Cup Noodle branding to Enoch's armors in the El Shaddai trailer. It even employed Lucifel's Japanese voice actor Ryota Takeuchi to record new quotes for the commercial, including parody lines that replaced the word "equipment" with "Cup Noodle."

The new collaborative commercial video is available to watch via YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p9nPMcYLLk

Nissin has been holding collaborations between Cup Noodles and many Japanese game franchises. The most well-known one was the Final Fantasy XV crossover in 2016. In recent years, Nissin has also collaborated with the mobile game Project Sekai Colorful Stage! feat. Hatsune Miku in 2022 and the Pokemon franchise in 2023.

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron was originally released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011. Crim has released remastered ports for the game on PC via Steam in 2021 and Nintendo Switch in 2024.

Spy x Family Kamaitachi No Yoru Visual Novel Game Debuts

Ahead of the September 19, 2024 release of Kamaitachi no Yoru x3, Spike Chunsoft released a new free visual novel parody game in collaboration with Spy x Family titled Kamaitachi no Yor. The release of the game is also a part of a special collaboration to celebrate the release of volume 14 of the manga series in Japan.

The main cast of characters in the new Spy x Family parody Kamaitachi no Yoru game include Loid, Yor, Anya, and Bond. Additionally, the supporting cast of characters featured in the game include Rodger Hostman, Spoussa Hostman, Porter Partheimer, Max Slacker, Adrahma Queen, Shorton Kreditz, Needa Jobsoon, Hack Scriver, and Guy Luvstaski.

The characters are all depicted as silhouettes in the classic style of the Kamaitachi no Yoru visual novel series. To access the game, players need to use a smartphone device to scan the QR code available in the official game website. Once there you can read the character profiles and access the parody visual novel by touching the TV. However, the game is only available in Japanese with no English options.

The Kamaitachi no Yor parody visual novel is inspired by the events of the Spy x Family manga that started in chapter 94, released earlier in January 22, 2024. Both the original Kamaitachi no Yoru game and the new manga arc feature similar elements regarding a murder taking place at a ski lodge.

Kamaitachi no Yoru x3 will come out in Japan on September 19, 2024 for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC via Steam. Viz Media handles the release of the Spy x Family manga outside of Japan, and a Season 3 of the anime is currently in production.

Nintendo Shares New Mario & Luigi: Brothership Details

Nintendo revealed new information and details about Mario & Luigi: Brothership, the first console title in the RPG series, including some insight into the new islands that the duo will visit in their new adventure and new Bros Attacks they will use. The new details appeared on the Japanese Nintendo website only, and some of the new details shared haven't been given localized English names yet.

The story of Mario & Luigi: Brothership will take place in the new world of Concordia, which spans a vast ocean. Mario and Luigi come to Concordia from the Mushroom Kindgom and will explore using Shipshape Island as a boat, where the mysterious "Connectal Tree" grows.

Mario is the well-known "superstar" of the Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi is his goofy and resourceful brother. While the duo hangs out at the gardens of Princess Peach's Castle, they are absorbed into a mysterious vortex that appears in the sky above them. After meeting Connie and Snoutlet, they learn that they have been taking to the vast ocean of Concordia.

Connie is a kind hearted girl who teaches the protagonist duo about Concordia. An incident led her to live aboard Shipshape Island and she tends to the island's tree. Meanwhile, Snoutlet is a unique character who looks like a piggy bank and an electric outlet, hence the name. Snoutlet serves as a guide to both Mario and Luigi in their adventure.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership features a number of drifting islands to explore in the ocean of Concordia, including Gran Gran Island, the nature-filled Tuis Island, Sabiretta Island, the urban island of Zenialevar, or the ice and fire island of Kandan. You can check out some of the new environments that the brother duo will visit here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5IlOERYagU

Nintendo also shared a new video featuring the new Combination Attacks that the duo can perform by collaborating while using their signature Hammer and Jump attacks. You can check out the clip below.

Mario and Luigi are also shown using a new Bros Attack in which the pair summons a giant storm cloud that drops thunder and lightning over the enemy group, and you can check it out here:

The game was revealed during the June 2024 Nintendo Direct presentation as both the first title in the series to release in a home console, as well as the fully 3D Mario & Luigi title.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership will release for the Nintendo Switch on November 7, 2024.

Konami Reintroduces Suikoden 1 Main Characters

Now that Suikoden I and II HD Remaster has a release date, Konami updated the official site to share profiles for the main characters in the first game. The five revealed include the initial four people who accompany the hero we can name, whose canon name is Tir McDohl.

Konami's first five profiles for characters don't feature any spoilers for Suikoden 1. Each one offers a brief description of who the person is, pictures of their official character art, and peeks at their sprites as seen in the world and in-battle. The first revealed person is the hero Tir McDohl. His profile explains he's the son of the Five Great General warrior Teo. He's training to become a warrior in his own right, and the game begins with him, his best friend Ted, and his guardians Gremio, Pahn, and Cleo assisting him on a task.

Gremio, Pahn, and Cleo are all described as servants of Teo who have been in the hero's life since he was a child. In the case of Gremio, this means he's also acted as a teacher, while Pahn and Cleo were assisting Teo McDohl more closely. Meanwhile, Ted is only described as someone who survived a war.

Here are all five official Suikoden 1 character profiles Konami shared with us.

While their weapon types aren't mentioned in the profiles, the character sprites show them. Tir uses a staff, Gremio wields and axe, and Pahn fights with his fists. All three would be in the front row in battle. Meanwhile, Cleo uses darts and Ted is an archer. So both of them work best in the back row.

Suikoden I and II HD Remaster will come to the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on March 6, 2025. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide. They also appeared together in a collection on the PSP in Japan.

2.5 Honkai: Star Rail Updates Include Pets, Casual Mode Difficulty

HoYoVerse detailed a few of the additions coming in the 2.5 Honkai: Star Rail update, and two of the biggest features include a Casual Mode difficulty setting and the ability to be accompanied by a pet in the field. You can also "quick deploy" others successful teams for Apocalyptic Shadow, Forgotten Hall: Memory of Chaos, and Pure Fiction if you also own all four characters.

In the case of the new pets system in Honkai: Star Rail, one is confirmed initially. As part of the Luminary Wardance, people will get a Tuskpir that resembles a tapir. The announcement on HoYoLab notes players who earn the reward will be able to summon it to walk alongside them in the field via the Inventory menu.

As for the Honkai: Star Rail Casual Mode difficulty, this will come up as an option when you go into certain missions or fights. On the page that will show the name of the location you head to and enemies you'll encounter, there will be a Mode Settings option in the upper righthand side of the screen next to the Rules you can view. Going into there will let you choose Casual Mode or stick with an existing option like Normal Mode. HoYoVerse specifically said some Companion Missions, Story Battles, Trailblaze Continuance, and Trailblaze Missions will allow a player to select Easy Mode.

Honkai: Star Rail is available for the PS5, PC, and mobile devices, and the 2.5 update arrives on September 10, 2024

My Time at Sandrock PS4 Release Date Set, Next Game Coming

Pathea Games announced not only a September 2024 release date for the PS4 version of My Time at Sandrock, but confirmed crowdfunding for the next new game in the series will also begin this month. PS4 owners can pick up this entry on September 12, 2024. There's no exact date for the Kickstarter for the next title beyond September 2024.

With the PS4 version of My Time at Sandrock, the release date was always going to follow the launches of the other platforms. Even when all entries were delayed, it didn't have an exact window. Pathea didn't note anything about the physical launch, as it only said the digital copy would appear at 5pm PT/8pm ET on September 12, 2024.

As for the next new My Time at game, the Kickstarter will begin in September 2024. Pathea didn't announce a name for the entry just yet. The first one was My Time at Portia, and Sandrock followed. An important thing to note is that so far, we've only seen titles set in the Alliance of Free Cities in the in-game world. Cities we've heard about, but not visited yet, also include Atara, Highwind, Lucien, Tallsky, Vega 5, and Walnut Groove.

Finally, Pathea's round of updates also included information on the online multiplayer for the Switch and PlayStation versions. It is working with Nintendo and Sony for approvals and feedback. The Switch version's North American and European co-op is already approved. At the moment, PC players can already play online.

My Time at Sandrock is available on the PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC, and the PS4 release date is September 12, 2024. The next My Time at game Kickstarter will launch in September 2024 as well.

Phantasy Star Online 2 PSO2 New Genesis - Kaiju No 8 crossover content

Sega has revealed new crossover content for Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis from the anime adaptation of a shonen manga series at the September 2024 NGS Headline program. The title in question is Kaiju No 8, and its content will appear in PSO2 in mid-September 2024.

Most of the content will be available in the "Kaiju No 8 Style" scratch ticket that Sega will launch in PSO2: New Genesis on September 18, 2024. Just like recent prior crossovers with Code Geass, The Eminence in Shadow, and Shangri-la Frontier, the Japanese voice actors will provide new in-game lines based on the anime version's characters.

After collecting the required parts, players will be able to turn their avatars into Reno Ichikawa (with voiceovers by Wataru Kato), Kikoru Shinomiya (Ai Fairouz), Mina Ashiro (Asami Seto), and Soshiro Hoshina (Kengo Kawanishi). Even though the protagonist Kafka Hibino will not be available in person, players can get a full-body suit and voice set that lets them become the transformed Kaiju No 8 with Japanese voiceovers by Masaya Fukunishi.

Players who do not plan on purchasing the scratch tickets can still get Kaiju No 8-themed items by simply logging into the game for seven days within the event period. They will be able to get acrylic stands of the titular Kaiju and the five main characters, which they can place in their Creative Spaces.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis is available worldwide on PC and PlayStation 4, with an additional Nintendo Switch cloud version in Japan and an Xbox One release elsewhere globally. The Kaiju No 8 crossover content will be temporarily available for about a month starting from September 18, 2024.

ace attorney investigations review

2024 has been a fantastic year for Ace Attorney fans, between the Apollo Justice Trilogy in January and now Ace Attorney Investigations in September. As Miles Edgeworth, you get to prosecute criminals and bring them to justice. Psych! No you don't, but you do get to solve cool mysteries, overwhelm opponents with the might of logic, and look snazzy with a fancy cravat and sleek new visuals. As a longtime fan of the series and a big Edgeworth fan, I can say with absolutely no bias at all that this was well worth the wait.

The plot of Ace Attorney Investigations focuses on Miles Edgeworth, one of the main characters from the original Ace Attorney trilogy and Phoenix's rival. Though he is a prosecutor, he never goes to court in the games. Instead, Edgeworth focuses on solving cases outside of the courtroom. The cases all connect into an overarching story compared to somewhat more episodic first trilogy. It plays very similarly to the main series though. You still have to collect clues, put them together, and find contradictions in testimonies. Edgeworth's unique mechanic of Logic doesn't introduce anything too radical like the Emotional Matrix from Dual Destinies or the Jury of The Great Ace Attorney. But it's still a fun way to advance the story and shake things up.

ace attorney investigations interpol
Screenshot by Siliconera

When I first played Investigations in high school, the story didn't really resonate with me. At first, I thought it was because I liked how the more episodic first trilogy allowed for "breather" cases. However, the port helped me to figure out my initial disinterest. The setting for the duology reminds me a bit too much of how 5 and 6 became way grander in scale.

Edgeworth is a prosecutor, yet he's doing work that seems far beyond his pay grade. I don't know how the rules work in Japanifornia, but prosecutors leading a criminal investigation into an international smuggling ring seems pretty divorced from reality. Not that the games were ever trying to be realistic, but there was still some degree of credibility. It's like watching CSI or Criminal Minds. I doubt those agents in real life go out in the field and apprehend criminals. It's easier to accept Edgeworth doing this now than it was back then. I suppose I have 5 and 6 to thank for that, since those games jumped the shark in a way that nothing can really surprise me anymore in Ace Attorney.

This is subjective, but I really enjoy the cast of characters in the second game. They're so much more colorful than ones in the first entry. The story is also a lot better, in my opinion, and I can see why some consider it one of the top three games in the entire franchise. I'm also a lot more receptive to Lang this time around, since I'm no longer a diehard Edgeworth-stanning teenager. Now I feel bad that the first thing I said when Lang appeared was, "Was he always this ugly?"

ace attorney investigations running
Screenshot by Siliconera

Something I vividly remember from when Ace Attorney Investigations first came out was an interview with the development team. Someone mentioned that they put a lot of care into Edgeworth's running animations to make it look natural and effortless. The updated sprites in the game make those animations look even better than they were on the DS. He looks great jogging around, as do all of the characters. At no point did I ever feel like switching back to the original sprites and, during the brief period I did, it looked so wrong that I had to go back. It's when the portraits appear that they revert to the ye olde "three frames per action" style of the DS era. The change is a little jarring, I admit, but not enough that it actively bothers me.

The little avatars on the field are so cute, especially now that we can see so many more details. I love Edgeworth's smug little face when he does that annoying shrug. I love Gumshoe's pathetic cringing animation. The guys in this duology are really lovable this time around thanks to their overall goofiness and the new sprites. I've liked Edgeworth and Gumshoe since the very first game, and this one really reinforced my affections for them. As for Eustace, he's a ridiculous clown boy but I adore him all the same. He was one of the things I was most excited for when Nintendo first announced this port, and all of his scenes were as delightful as I hoped they'd be.

The girls are no slouch either in that department, especially with Kay's lively little animation cycles. She's so similar to what Maya and Trucy (and later Athena) brought to the table though! It's way too late now to complain about the writing, but sometimes I wish that they'd gone a different route with her personality. Her rapport with Edgeworth was fun regardless and I enjoyed her integration into the overarching lore. So this isn't me pushing an anti-Kay agenda, mind you.

ace attorney investigations localization
Screenshot by Siliconera

One thing that kind of takes me out of the experience is the occasional wordiness in the localization. This is only prevalent in the first game. I decided to reread my review for the Apollo Justice trilogy while writing up this one and to my shock, I realized I repeated my past mistake. Once again, I chose to replay a bit of The Great Ace Attorney during Investigations, and the memory of that game affected my impression of this one. I should stop doing that. While the localization for Investigations is strong, there are a few points where a different translation might have been snappier to read. The sentences can be long to the point of awkwardness, making them feel unnatural for dialogue.

It's one thing if the lines are, say, Edgeworth's. He talks in an overly stuffy and formal manner in the Japanese as well. But it's another thing for random characters who should be a lot more casual. That being said, I don't believe that the occasional odd line is detrimental to the overall experience, especially if you're someone who doesn't work with words and writing all the time. It's also a personal preference thing. I firmly believe all periods and commas should be in quotations, and that people should use harebrained rather than hair-brained. But according to my research, some people don't share this opinion.

ace attorney investigations cover art
Image via Capcom

Ace Attorney Investigations is a fantastic port that looks and plays beautifully on modern consoles. I'm so happy that people can finally experience the second game with an official localization! So happy that we can finally see that little wiener Eustace in HD glory! It strikes that perfect middle ground between the old Ace Attorney (the original trilogy and I argue even the fourth game) quality and the new Ace Attorney (Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice) zaniness that most fans of the series can enjoy it, so long as they suspend their disbelief. Just pretend you're watching something like Criminal Minds!

Ace Attorney Investigations will come out on September 6, 2024 for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Windows PC.
